The Potato Eaters
From Kurdish poet and writer Farhad Pirbal, a heartbreaking collection of short stories. Each tale in The Potato Eaters underlines "otherness", or isolation and displacement in contemporary society. His characters are at once resonant and shocking, his ability to decry trauma reminiscent of American greats like Morrison and Hurston. The title story from this collection is one of the most acclaimed Kurdish short stories; it features a town that, due to famine, only survives on potatoes. The community comes to appreciate the base cuisine and abandon currency for their coveted starch. When the story's protagonist returns from his travels, he brings gold home and he is met with utter apathy; he is a stranger in his own country."Lamartine" tells the story of a struggling poetry expert with a PhD on Lamartine's lines in search of a lucrative career. He has trouble finding the right words to get a job. He visits a local career agency and in plain verse, asks for a career; he and the agent imagine a world wherein poets are paid by the line instead of the hour, a world in which artists always have a steady income. After the encounter, he says to a statue of his hero, "we really do live pitifully, us all like us, artists and poets. Often I have thought that a demon, at the beginning of time, must have nursed us: misfortune our first milk.""The Deserter" spotlights a forgetful soldier struggling to find his lost leg in 1989. He hobbles for nearly ten days until his Corporal informs him to prepare for war. "How?", he wonders. The two go in search for a new leg, scavenging through piles of human body parts. In war, all warriors lose pieces of themselves: legs, arms, minds, hearts and souls. He reflects on his station: "My generation and I...we are the sacrifice of our era; the sacrifice to war and the dirty battles of those fools and frauds we call today's leaders." The story ends there-without resolution. This finality parallels the ramifications of war: stories and lives cut short, questions left unanswered.
Balloon Theater
In many parts of the world, a theater that features puppet shows is known as a balloon theater. The title of this collection invokes an image of puppets under the control of a master. In each of these thirty stories and essays, Steve Moncada Street presents an immaculately described, fully inhabited world of authentic characters crossing class and cultural strictures to resist the forces that would control them. A failed musician travels to Russia seeking a wife and rediscovers his inspiration. A SCUBA diver remembers how to see. Two men, one successful, one a failure, meet in a mall and reawaken their long-past rivalry. A cocky high school student who is humiliated in a classroom peer-pressure experiment finds grace and forgiveness. A tough but well-adjusted kid finds poignancy in the home life of a classmate who is neither tough nor well-adjusted. An expatriate teacher who has left his family to engage his true self is unsettled by a cancer diagnosis. A writer in his "last few inches" of life engages his dreadful circumstance with lyrical clarity. Balloon Theater explores the misunderstandings, satisfactions, self-deceptions, betrayals, and eventual (if tentative) understandings of well-intending people trying to discover their own particular frequencies.

The Way You Want to Be Loved
"A collection of poignant, finely crafted stories set against the backdrop of violence that has long racked north-eastern India." -Amitav Ghosh, via Twitter"A new voice in the burgeoning oeuvre of anglophone fiction from northeast India." -World Literature TodayAt a New Delhi conference, an Assamese writer is interrogated on why he writes about magical folktales instead of the insurgencies. A mother splashes around in the village lake to mask the lovemaking sounds of her son with another man. A newly-arrived graduate student in Minnesota navigates living arrangements with his white roommate, Mike, and Mike's Indian girlfriend. Aruni Kashyap offers up a powerful critique of the malfunctioning democracies of India and the US, deftly balancing devastation and tragedy with a darkly humorous tone that has readers questioning their laughter. At its core, The Way You Want to Be Loved explores what it means to love, desire, and long for life under the duress of everyday and state-sanctioned violence and discrimination.

Eros & Dust
Trebor Healey's masterly prose is known for its visceral energy, muscular edge, flights of lyrical fantasy and elegiac reflection; from places of both light and dark, he thoroughly captures the poignant and erotic life of gay men. In his 2016 short story collection, Eros & Dust, Healey sets loose an unforgettable cast of characters as he returns to many of his favourite themes: desire in Mexico and South America, the search for fauns, folly, death, erotic obsessions, and a bit of the supernatural. Many of his stories offer flawed characters, using faulty reasoning to make bad choices. Others are more an elegy to lost innocence than what the surface indicates. There's the meth-addled youth bent on redemption by returning to New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a mischievous imp wreaking havoc in 1980s Berkeley, and a circus clown fleeing his Mexican trapeze artist lover by escaping to Argentina. The reader will also encounter an elusive faun of the Oaxacan highlands, a traveler expiring from dengue fever, a revisionist Jack Kerouac, and a victim of Pinochet's brutal coup, along with troubled chickenhawks and ambivalent lovers trying to work it out in venues as diverse as chatrooms, a junkyard, and a puppet theater."I read Eros & Dust over the course of weeks, a story here and there, and walked away well contented. Healey's short fiction themes - here very much a tangle of desire, aging, Mexico and South America, queerness - play lightly at one glance even as they settle into the reader's skin."- Nathan Burgoine"I picture three Trebor Healeys: one poetic, one crazed with lust, and one shaggy with heat and dust. When all of them work in concert as they do in Healey's novels their combined power is formidable. But the shorter pieces, such as those in Eros & Dust, reveal the strength of those beasts on a more individual level ... Each voice is as distinctive in solo as it is an essential component of the blend. Truly a marvelous trick to pull off, and Trebor Healey does it with skill and grace."- Jerry L. Wheeler
