Scenes from Life
Scenes from Life is a collection of stories and vignette set in a variety of countries. They describe encounters with people and with the often strange worlds they and we inhabit. Some of those brushes are the stuff of adventure. Two involve the authors close encounters with death. There are tales of human kindness, but also of cruelty. One is a narrative told to the author by a survivor of the Holocaust. All accounts in the collection are true in that they are taken from life and are a record of memory and occasional field notes. As many truths exist as there are people to express them. They are ways of being in and seeing the world. Had someone else encountered the experiences and the characters that appear in this book, they would have written them differently, or perhaps not written them at all and either consigned them to capricious anecdote or to oblivion. So the sense in which these tales are true is necessarily the authors. They are offered to you, the reader in the hope that you will find in them some meaning of your own.As Thoreau observed: Nothing was ever so unfamiliar and startling to a man as his own thoughts. We are alien first to ourselves.

The Missing Photograph
The Missing Photograph is a collection of stories and essays, each one matched to a particular photograph that is displayed opposite the text. The pieces touch on the relations between photography and story telling. Whether it is a story about a family outing, the planet Saturn or even a self-portrait, the images and words show they can refract off one another. An image can re-frame and re-purpose a story while words can elucidate and draw out the more abstruse aspects of an image. Some essays are forensic in their examination of the image and other stories use the image to launch into trajectories of their own. Then again some of these images remain virtually untouched by the story seemingly assigned to describe them. Yet others can only be made sensible by the accompanying text.A theme of these pieces is the nature of photography, how it works and how it manages its limitations. Early photography is touched on, as are the ideas of photography theorists. The range of images encompasses animals, people, places, still life and, of course, the photograph that is missing. We explore images of family and friends, stories of fate and personal identity. This is a book about what photographs can show and words can explore.

The Blood Year Daughter
In G.G. Silverman's debut fairytale-horror collection The Blood Year Daughter, a woman builds husbands out of gravel and slaughterhouse feathers, two sisters eat cinnamon-scented pieces of their mother, and a charming doctor's murdered brides whisper warnings to his newest wife. Silverman's women and girls escape smiling captors, draw blood to curse their loved ones, and wield fear to defend themselves in post-apocalyptic worlds. They ignore the insults of rotting Elderwomen filled with flies, resist marriage proposals, and fill themselves--joyfully--with multitudes of snakes. They are murdered and choose to live again. Drawing from folktales, Silverman's Italian roots, and killers both real and imagined, The Blood Year Daughter's stories recall Kelly Link and Carmen Maria Machado. Daddy Issues
Winner of the Barbara DiBernard Prize in Fiction Daddy Issues is a collection of moving and complex--yet simply and directly told--stories of queer Asian American experiences in Los Angeles. In many of these stories, the protagonists are artists and writers and other creative thinkers living on the fringe of survival, attempting to align a life of the imagination with the practical considerations of career, income, and family: a gay father who hasn't come out to his young son; a social worker, numbed by the destitution of his clients, who finds himself lost in self-destruction; a trans man who returns home to a father with dementia to help his family pack as they are pushed out by gentrification; a husband who can only stand aside as his wife heals from a miscarriage; and a broke writer who learns to love his stories again. The stories in Daddy Issues offer different contemplations on solitude--the good and the bad of it. Ultimately, this collection by Eric C. Wat is full of hope, and it shows how we can find the connections we need once we allow ourselves to become vulnerable.
Invitation
Winner of the Raz/Shumaker Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction In Invitation, men and women try and fail to connect to the people they want to be with. A boy shares seemingly disturbing details about his mother's disappearance with an aloof tutor. A man stalks an ex-girlfriend but finds her missing. A woman wakes up in an empty apartment--and to every mother's worst nightmare. When a callous young man penetrates the bell jar of an elderly couple's quiet life, their live-in assistant learns a cruel lesson about loyalty. Why are we the way we are with one another? And what do our relationships ask us to become? In these stories, set mostly in South Korea, all must contend with the uncertainty and danger that comes with connection, real or imagined. These stories by Mi Jin Kim ask us to consider what it is we really want from the people we think we need.

In Ed Park's utterly original collection, An Oral History of Atlantis, characters bemoan their fleeting youth, focus on their breathing, meet cute, break up, write book reviews, translate ancient glyphs, bid on stuff online, whale watch, and once in a while find solace in the sublime. Throughout, Park deploys his trademark wit to create a world both strikingly recognizable and delightfully other. Spanning a quarter century, these sixteen stories tell the absurd truth about our lives. They capture the moment when the present becomes the past--and are proof positive that Ed Park is one of the most imaginative and insightful writers working today.

Tales from the North and West!
Llandudno and York, I love them both equally! One for the sea, smells and aromas that float about the place, and the big seaside skies and the light they give off. The other, for its 'past'! A 'past' that consumes me completely as I step onto its pavements and breathe in its air. But are these tales true, I hear you ask? Well, all I can say for certain is that there is some semblance of truth in all of them. As there is some truth in most things that we come across. Some characters were still alive at the time of writing and publication. Those that died are sadly still dead. Some of the events in these pages really did happen. I can testify to that personally because I witnessed some of them for myself. That is all I shall say on the matter. It is up to you now, the reader, to decide for yourselves. I can say no more.

Magnus navigates the complexities of his peers, the adults in his life, and his own identity while wrestling with the subtleties of language. Morgan, estranged from her family after a shattering event, confronts uncomfortable truths as she lives, works, and travels in a foreign country. Myra reflects on her choices regarding marriage and emigration - decisions she made for what she believed was best for her family, though not always for herself.

A Kite of Farewells
A Kite of Farewells is a poignant-and, at times, absurd-anthology of departure. Each story within these pages is tethered to an object that bears silent witness to the lives that once brushed against its form. As you turn these pages, you will encounter stories that weave the threads of loss, each narrative a delicate strand in the fabric of existence. The objects-mute spectators to human sorrow-become the vessels of collective grief, the repositories of the most intimate of farewells. These stories are like the eponymous kite, soaring high, carrying with it memories and goodbyes, perhaps symbolizing the soul's journey or the act of releasing emotions and memories into the sky. This collection invites you to explore the depth of human connections and the artefacts that become the legacy of those connections. It is a testament to the enduring power of memory and the resilience of the human spirit in finding beauty even in the face of absence.

Under
As wryly profound as ever, Glen Pourciau solidifies his reputation as a master of American short fiction with Under, a collection of brief yet meticulously elaborated stories that deconstruct daily living as his characters see it by diving beneath their skin and surveying the electric heat bristling below. He scours their interiors for the granular details of consciousness that accrue to a person's singular point of view, shape patterns of behavior, and culminate in consequential decisions (or equally meaningful inaction). Pourciau's writing thrums with claustrophobic intelligence, untangling the knots of eccentric personalities by observing the trajectory of his subjects' thoughts and tracing them back to the source. Rarely is the root an inciting incident or narrative catalyst, but rather the self-propagating algorithm of paranoia that proves to us we have something to fear precisely because we are afraid. Pourciau's titular story begins with the narrator confessing, "A voice from within is telling me this story. It rises like protruding lumps from nowhere." More often than not, plots that start inside one's head refuse to stay there; soon, psychological disruption asserts itself in the material world, determining a character's lived experience as tangibly as an external force or outside actor. "I've been watching a patch of ground in my backyard that has been upset by something moving up from below," the narrator continues. It's no comfort, actually, that what is emerging never actually emerges; a lack of conclusive evidence means never fully disproving the possibility of the thing, either. "Nothing is buried or rising from below in my backyard. My conscience is clear, guided only by its own instinct," the narrator assures himself to no avail. "This story should be rooted out, destroyed, but talking to it doesn't make it go away. Even when silent, something insidious gnaws within it." Pourciau's ability to illuminate that something insidious is what makes his writing something marvelous. No less instructive or revelatory for their internal accelerants, these stories spotlight the small conflagrations that punctuate even our most ordinary days. In delineating the invisible machinations of each person's mind, they reveal the flammable borders of personal boundaries and the conflicts with colleagues, neighbors, and long-time friends that cast off sparks and set our small lives ablaze.
