Kendo World 8.4
Editorial By Alex Bennett "Erai shitsurei shimashita. That's Kansai dialect for, "Begging your pardon folks..." It has been quite some time since the last issue of Kendo World. The blame rests solely on my shoulders. The past 18 months or so have been characterised by life sort of getting in the way. But KW is back, and we are on the verge of taking it to new heights." Alex also discusses the recent iaido grading scandal and the WKC in Korea.Uncle Kotay's Kendo Korner Kendo sage Uncle Kotay dishes out his inimitable brand of wisdom on the adage "katte-utsu", or "win and then strike".Kendo and the Human Condition By HoJun Yoo This article is the winner of the "Kendo World / Shogun Kendogu Blue Label Article Competition". "Feeling utterly broken, I sit on the edge of my bed, surrounded by the suffocating darkness and silence. The clock reads four in the afternoon, and the winter sun should be about to set soon, but I can only guess. I haven't been outside in over a week. Looking around the spartan room, I feel utterly detached, though the detachment is better than the usual crushing sense of self-loathing, panic, and anxiety. It is as close to relief as I can get." HoJun Yoo discusses how kendo is helping him with his mental wellbeing.Kendo: Part 4 By Takano Sasaburo Translated by Alex Bennett The final section of Chapter 3 discusses kata. "Kata forms were created by selecting the most fundamental techniques in kendo. Through studying kata, students develop good posture, hone their power of observation, fix bad technical habits, learn the correct cutting angle of the blade, become more agile and lighter in action, develop precise striking technique, understand correct distancing (maai), improve temperament, and augment a strong spirit (kiai). It is for these reasons that kata practice is veryimportant."Hagakure: Part 6 By Alex Bennett In this installment, we are warned of the dangers of drinking too much... One Hammer Of A Heartbeat
When I watched him stroll casually through the gate to the barn area at Playfair Racecourse, I gave him no more consideration than any of the hundreds of horses I had cared for growing up. I'd never been around Thoroughbred horses on the backside of the racetrack except as a casual visitor being the only difference. Just another horse, was my thinking at the time. There were champions in his pedigree, but he was offered for sale at a thousand dollars and purchased for eight hundred. Little Provolone, as we called him, would never be a champion to anyone but me.I never understood my father and he never knew what to think of me until this horse came along. Because of this horse, I was able to spend half a year with my favorite uncle, my father, and what came to be my favorite place, the backside of the racetrack. Our time together, Little Provolone and I, also manifested a couple dozen hard-earned life lessons, as any worthwhile love affair will do. Our journey takes us from the day I met a Thoroughbred racehorse officially named Officer's Citation according to the Jockey Club Registry, through the day his knee and my heart shattered simultaneously somewhere between the guinea stand and the quarter pole at Playfair.Uncle Baldy would tell the jockey to wait until the quarter-pole to let the horse run, "...and if you don't know where the quarter-pole is, it's past the fucking guinea stand."I've never researched the origins of the name, guinea stand. To be honest I'm afraid of what I will find. You'll meet my mentors at the racetrack, my father Marv and his brother Baldy. I probably brag about them too much in this memoir, but if they occupied the same positions in your pedigree, you would too.I have/had a lot of great uncles, but Baldy wins the favorite uncle race by the length of the stretch. Like any uncle worth his salt, a bad influence in a positive way.I am the youngest son of Marv, and he is his own book. He once described the art of resurrecting a racehorse as "putting a poultice on his heart." Nothing brought my father and I closer than this horse. Nothing even came close.Uncle Baldy is his own book as well. The two of them together were an encyclopedia of horsemanship one can only hope to emulate. They ran good-looking horses, and they ran tough.Believe me, they could both tell a story better than I.Some of it feels like it happened yesterday, but these are thirty-year-old memories about the first year I spent on the backside of the Playfair Race Course, now Playfair Business Park. But "One Hammer of a Heartbeat" is not a book about any of these people or events.I've come to see it as a love letter to life on the backstretch three decades ago and in remembrance of some of the ghosts who still haunt me today.Having been written for a ghost from the past, what else could "One Hammer of a Heartbeat" be but a love letter to the past?

Infractions
Jerry Parkinson spent nearly ten years, from 2000 to 2010, as a member of the NCAA's Division I Committee on Infractions, participating in over one hundred major infractions cases. He came away from that experience--and the experience of reading extensive commentary on infractions cases--with the conviction that most observers do not understand the NCAA's rules-enforcement process, despite the amount of public attention many major cases receive. Parkinson uses his insider's perspective, along with illustrative stories, to help readers understand how the NCAA's rules-enforcement process really works. These stories include: a university board of trustees chair committing suicide over an infractions case; a pay-for-play scandal leading directly to the state's governor; a head coach falsely portraying a deceased player as a drug dealer to cover up the coach's own misconduct; a gambler laundering his money by making the largest booster payments in NCAA history; and a coach's sexual abuse of children leading to some of the harshest sanctions ever imposed by the NCAA. Based on years of experience and infused with insight, Parkinson provides a broad view of the world of NCAA rule breakers and the NCAA rules-enforcement process.
Three Seconds in Munich
One. Two. Three. That's as long as it took to sear the souls of a dozen young American men, thanks to the craziest, most controversial finish in the history of the Olympics--the 1972 gold-medal basketball contest between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the world's two superpowers at the time. The U.S. team, whose unbeaten Olympic streak dated back to when Adolf Hitler reigned over the Berlin Games, believed it had won the gold medal that September in Munich--not once, but twice. But it was the third time the final seconds were played that counted. What happened? The head of international basketball--flouting rules he himself had created--trotted onto the court and demanded twice that time be put back on the clock. A referee allowed an illegal substitution and an illegal free-throw shooter for the Soviets while calling a slew of late fouls on the U.S. players. The American players became the only Olympic athletes in the history of the games to refuse their medals. Of course, the 1972 Olympics are remembered primarily for a far graver matter, when eleven Israeli team members were killed by Palestinian terrorists, stunning the world and temporarily stopping the games. One American player, Tommy Burleson, had a gun to his head as the hostages were marched past him before their deaths. Through interviews with many of the American players and others, the author relates the horror of terrorism, the pain of losing the most controversial championship game in sports history to a hated rival, and the consequences of the players' decision to shun their Olympic medals to this day.
The Faraway Horses
"I've started horses since I was 12 years old and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep from getting myself killed. I started to realize that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method works well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider. " --Buck Brannaman The Faraway Horses, which was the inspiration for the Sundance Film Festival's award-winning documentary Buck in 2011, is Buck Brannaman's richly textured and stunning account of his life from an abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life "horse-whisperer," Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses--and people--with his understanding, compassion, and respect. A truly American story about a cowboy and sage, The Faraway Horses tells the tale of the extraordinary life of an extraordinary man. At heart, this rich and rewarding memoir is a roadmap for living a harmonious and honorable existence among horses and humans. This updated edition features a new foreword and introduction.

Xing Yi Quan
Literally translated as "Form-Intention Boxing," Xing Yi Quan emphasizes internal movement within external stillness. Practicing Xing Yi trains the practitioner to actualize the instinctive, hair-trigger reactions of the human body in direct, powerful movements. Xing Yi training focuses on natural, integrated movement, whole body breathing, and the movement of Qi (vital energy), rather than external technique. Rooted in Daoist meditation and longevity practices, and Chinese medical and martial art traditions dating back into antiquity, Xing Yi Quan training draws upon ancient Daoist meditation and inner alchemical practices that transform the body's internal structure, while confronting and dispelling extraneous thoughts to actualize true Intention, thereby providing the practitioner with a comprehensive method of actualizing his or her own inherent potential.Xing Yi Quan: Art of Inner Transformation is not a how-to book. In this fascinating meditation on the art of Xing Yi Quan and its many applications to life and living, author Tom Bisio discusses the many facets of this ancient art: - What is Xing Yi Quan? - The Relationship of Xing Yi Quan to Daoism - Xing Yi Quan and the Five Elements - The Health Benefits of Xing Yi Quan - Xing Yi Quan Training - Suitability of Xing Yi Quan for Different Ages & Lifestyles - Xing Yi Quan as a Martial Art - Xing Yi Quan as a Psycho-Spiritual PathXing Yi Quan has five key movements, known as The Five Elements, or The Five Fists. Each of the Five Fists has a specific internal action and intention that is simultaneously energy enhancing, combative, and strengthens and harmonizes the internal organs. Practicing the Five Fists cultivates Qi and develops practical fighting skills. In Xing Yi Quan: Art of Inner Transformation Tom Bisio explains how the postures and movements of Xing Yi Quan open the body's energy pathways (meridians), promoting health and well-being, while simultaneously arousing and enlivening the Qi, so that there is no gap between intention and action.
