What Are the Olympics For?
'Athletes first' is a slogan the International Olympic Committee often touts, but the reality is very different, as pre-eminent Olympics expert Jules Boykoff shows in this book. While the world's attention is riveted by the triumphs and tribulations on their screens, there is much that goes on behind the scenes that is deeply troubling: athletes are increasingly voicing concerns over physical, mental, and sexual abuse, and they are collectively expressing grievances around equity and human rights. Outside the stadiums, problems range from the democratic deficit and corruption surrounding the awarding of the Games, to displacement of people and gentrification of neighbourhoods to make way for Olympic venues, to the environmental damage that Olympic construction inflicts and then tries to greenwash away. Boykoff tells us that radical steps are required if the Games are to be fixed and only then will they be truly 'athletes first'.

God-Wrestler
Life can be a mess at times. And even with acknowledging some of the joy and beauty, we are nevertheless in a situation in which we must make sense of life and the world around us in the midst of real pain and suffering while also addressing the question of God and our faith in Him (or lack thereof). For Michael Fessler, the answer to how we approach life, faith, and the mystery of God is not necessarily found in pursuits of deep philosophical thought or scientific inquiry but by engaging in a personal wrestling match with God. In utilizing the biblical story of "Jacob wrestling with God" as a foundational story, Michael suggests that it has been God's desire from the very beginning for us to embrace the identity of a wrestler with Him; and, within the struggle, not only discover the reality of who He is but ultimately who we are individually and our purpose in life. In a somewhat memoir-like fashion, God-Wrestler takes you on a journey throughout Michael's life in and outside the sport of wrestling as he experiences his wrestling match with God and the unfolding of his own story filled with both tragedy and triumph.

The Trailheads of Hinsdale County
Hinsdale County lie high in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Rugged and remote, over 96% of the county consists of public lands, much of it designated as Wilderness. Mining roads, logging roads, jeep roads, stock trails, and trails developed by hunters and hikers crisscross the county forming a labyrinth of trails through the area. While these trails lead through some of the most beautiful land in Colorado, some trails are not well developed and others receive limited use, leaving a hiker uncertain as to whether a given trail is within his or her abilities. The Trailheads of Hinsdale County features fifty-lone trailheads located in Hinsdale County, or trailheads with trails leading into the county. Leading from these trailheads are over one hundred trails which are discussed in detail. Each section contains direction to the trailhead, relevant beginning elevations and elevation gains, distances to destinations, and a discussion of what to expect along the trail, as well as points where navigation may become an issue. Maps accompany each section. Each trail is rated by difficulty based upon distance, elevation gain, difficulty of the terrain, and difficulty of navigation. The final section of the book discusses the author's opinions as to what trails are best suited for beginners, well suited for the different seasons of the year, as well as the author's personal favorites.

Online Doping
This book examines the bodies, communities, and cultures that evolve in different online doping spaces. By engaging in critical analysis of the interrelatedness of online and offline doped realities, the book provides a comprehensive analysis influenced by digital sociology and feminist theory. It focuses on the intersection of doping, bodies, and technology, and is structured around three interconnected themes prominent in doping research but less acknowledged in online environments: doping spaces and communities; gender and power relationships; and the relationship between online activities and offline social life. Building on extensive online research with different drug communities and doping spaces, the authors illustrate how the online world of doping has developed into a digital ecosystem, and present an argument for understanding doping as a cyborgified concept. It will be of interest to students and researchers of sport and digital sociology, media studies, social work, drug studies and gender studies

Federico Grisone's "The Rules of Riding" Gli ordini di cavalcare
Federico Grisone published Gli ordini di cavalcare (The Rules of Riding) in 1550, the first manual on man癡ge riding, the ancestor of modern dressage. The Ordini codified a half-century of oral tradition of teaching this art and was a best seller and a welcome aid in educating noblemen at European courts in the art of the man癡ge. Elizabeth Tobey and Federica Brunori Deigan have prepared the first modern edited English translation of the Ordini, which should interest Renaissance scholars and equestrians, and includes an introductory essay, a glossary of equestrian terms, and the transcription of the 1550 Italian first edition.Grisone's treatise and the riding masters trained at his riding academy in Naples, Italy, spread the practice of the art of man癡ge riding to courts throughout Europe. Twenty-three Italian editions of the text were published between 1550 and 1620 and the treatise was translated into French, English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Many of the concepts Grisone discusses in his treatise--such as developing contact between horse and rider and collection in the horse--are still major tenets of modern dressage riding. The haute 矇cole or High School movements of classical dressage are still practiced today by such traditional academies such as the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria and the Cadre Noir in Saumur, France.
Sports Management in an Uncertain Environment
This edited book delves into several aspects of sports and sports management from a vantage of uncertainty and turbulence unleashed initially by COVID-19. The book, divided into three broad sections, deals in strategy and governance of sports organizations, use and evolution of technology in sports, and sports consumption and media. It starts from the backdrop of how sport assumed a new-found importance in people's lives while reeling under several phases of pandemic-induced lockdowns. Consumers felt how integral sports was in their lives when there were no live games to watch and bond on. Players, leagues, organizers, and media are still recovering, along with viewers, as sports makes a tentative comeback in our lives. COVID-19 was a precursor of the disruptions to come. Both the supply and demand sides have taken note of those disturbances to prepare themselves for any such potential derailments. The organizations, franchises, athletes, media, health care, logistics on sports have been reworking their strategies to keep coping with uncertainties. On the other hand, the consumers have transformed their sports consumption behavior over these two years, aided by the enormous technological changes. Such a backdrop paved the way for researchers to understand how the sports industry has dealt with this impact and has rediscovered itself to take its coveted spot. This book is a snapshot of several global sports changes and how they continue to evolve in an increasingly turbulent and uncertain world. It will be a rich resource not only for academics studying sports management, but also event management organizations, administrators, and policymakers.

Are You Ready For College
I had the time of my life when I attended Alabama State University as a student-athlete. This is where I made lifetime friends and lifelong memories through easy and tough times. These experiences made my college years all worth it. Although some of the things I had to deal with could have been less of a headache if I had known what to expect. Some of the troubles I experienced could have been eliminated if I had been abreast of the situation beforehand. Even though I was a student-athlete, I was not alone. Many students had to deal with many of the ups and downs of registration, books, financial aid, scholarships, dormitory, etc. This is an issue I see even today. Instead of continuing to watch this, I decided to do something about it. I thought it would be a great thing to put together what I call a "Blueprint" for high school students as they prepare for their years of college. It is titled "Are You Ready For College" Are You Ready For College is a book consisting of everything you need to know to prepare yourself for college. Whether you are a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior or have taken a couple of years off after high school, this book gives you a real layout of what to expect during your college years. It is never too early or too late to get the necessary information that will allow your college experience to be a memorable one. I know you will benefit from and enjoy the information inside, so dive in and see for yourself "Are You Ready For College?"
Sports Heroes Who Over Came the Odds - Never Lose Heart
Kirkus Reviews A nonfiction collection shares tales of unlikely victories from the sports world.Who doesn't love an inspiring sports story? There are few things as satisfying as seeing someone succeed at a physical challenge against all odds, whether as a member of an underdog team or a solo athlete pushing the boundaries of the human body. Black's volume cites heroes like Diana Nyad, who managed to swim from Cuba to Florida on her fifth attempt at the age of 64, and Kara Whitley, who climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro despite weighing 300 pounds. Stories of famous athletes like Babe Ruth, Jim Thorpe, Jackie Robinson, Phil Knight, and Michael Jordan sit right alongside those of lesser-known figures, such as Gobi, a stray dog who adopted a runner during a 155-mile footrace through the namesake desert and ran with him to the finish line, or the coach who claimed that he would quit his job at the University of Washington if his crew team didn't take home a gold medal at the 1936 Olympics. Not only did his crew win, but it also beat the German team by a hair-right under the nose of Hitler. While Black's prose is unadorned, he deploys it with relish, as here where he describes a famous heavyweight championship fight between John L. Sullivan and James J. Corbett: "During the first few rounds, fans booed the dapper collegian as he deftly dodged the punches of the champion. But they were standing in their seats when Corbett broke Sullivan's nose in round three." There's something decidedly old-school about the work's presentation: no introduction, no images, just a few dozen two-page entries spanning the last century and a half of athletics. The entries aren't generally long enough for much of a narrative to form, but Black gives readers what they need for context...A bare-bones yet entertaining sports almanac that delivers on a simple premise.Kirkus ReviewsNever Lose Heart - Sports Heroes Who Overcame the Odds In 1975, Pete Black quit the University of Alabama baseball team as a 22-year-old senior. More than 45 years later, he still regrets his decision. He knows the agony of quitting-the pain of giving up on a dream. For the past decade, Pete has been a popular weekly columnist for his small hometown paper, the Monroe Journal. His columns feature short, non-fiction stories about real people who never lost heart.Never Lose Heart - Sports Heroes Who Overcame the Odds is a collection of 70 sports and adventure stories sure to inspire readers of all ages. From Roger Bannister eclipsing the impossible-to-break 4-minute mile barrier, to Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind climber to summit Mt. Everest, there are plenty of stories for everyone. Read about Jackie Robinson's courage in breaking baseball's color barrier and about the six minutes that stunned the world as the under-regarded University of Washington crew team spoiled Adolf Hitler's 1936 Olympics. This book is an extraordinary collection of stories that pass along a lesson Pete learned more than four decades ago. Never give up!

Obnoxious Parents and Ruthless Coaches
Baseball and all youth sports teach kids valuable "life lessons," but not when their role model parents and coaches behave like lunatics! With a biting, sarcastic sense of humor, this parent, coach, and umpire analyzes why seemingly intelligent adults lose their minds over kids playing baseball. Fireworks erupt when those wanting what's best for the kids clash with others who think winning is all that matters. When adults misbehave at games, kids learn the wrong way to conduct themselves, both in sports and in life. A shortage of umpires and referees now exists, as youth sports officials are resigning in record numbers due to the abuse they face. With true stories about coaches fighting, umpires needing police protection from parents, and behind-the-scenes politics, these tales will give you a good laugh while making you wonder, "WHAT THE HELL'S WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?"Obnoxious Parents and Ruthless Coaches is a must-read for anyone who's ever been involved in youth sports as a player or official and should be REQUIRED reading for parents and coaches of athletes! While telling hilarious anecdotes of outrageous adult behavior, a powerful message is being sent for adults to grow up, stop ruining the games, and just let the kids play. The stories you will read are true, but the names have been changed to protect THE GUILTY!
The America's Cup
The effort to win the America's Cup had taken Australia 7 Challenges since 1962, including 4 in 10 years by Alan Bond, of which three 12 metres had been designed by Ben Lexcen - Souther Cross, Australia and Australia II. The Mighty 'Bras
When Matildas star Sam Kerr was just a kid, when the inaugural A-League Women's season was still years away, and when a World Cup on Australian soil was a fanciful idea, a mob of mature Melbourne women threw caution, asthma inhalers and orthopaedic inserts to the wind and formed a team to play in the lowest division of the metropolitan league. Were the Mighty 'Bras, as this Brunswick Zebras team became known, the unheralded catalyst for the change of fortunes in women's football? No-one can say for sure. What's certain, however, is that this motley team of footballing novices became (their results notwithstanding) a roaring and enduring success. As their coach, author Paul Connolly, documents in this hilarious and heartwarming memoir, the Mighty 'Bras fell in love with a game; a love more intense for its late blossoming and the knowledge that injury, pregnancy, or perhaps even osteoporosis, could end it in a second. More importantly, these footballing novices discovered that their seemingly whimsical adventure turned out to be so much more, and forged lasting friendships and a sense of community that made all the bumps, bruises and calamitous losses worthwhile.

The focus of this book is to salute, recognize, and celebrate the special group of Students, the athletes, particularly the soccer players. The Adventures of Hot Wheelz the Horse
About the BookLori was often hushed as a young girl, the youngest of four with busy parents who sometimes didn't notice her. With three much louder and bigger older sisters, Lori didn't have much say in what she wanted. It would be years before she could be herself, develop self-worth and self-esteem, and use her athletic skills to their fullest. Yet, she persevered throughout her life to become as independent as possible. She discovered horses at age eight, where she could sense how their energy, loyalty, and sereneness helped mold her into a successful leader as an adult. 30-plus years later, her life collided with Hot Wheelz, which led to big adventures. Hot Wheelz was a lonely, neglected horse, too hot, too difficult to handle, with a mind of his own, and too quick for his own good. Many friends suggested that Lori sell him because he was a bit dangerous on the trail. He had several accidents, lost too much weight, nearly lost his life, was bullied by other horses, and rarely stood up for himself. Today he is the leader of his herd, and Lori is in full charge of her life with the support of her husband, Nigel. Together they all share the joy of day-to-day ranch living with their family of best friends. About the AuthorLori McIntosh has been riding horses since she turned eight, starting as a camper at Triple R Ranch in Chesapeake, Virginia. She rode one hour every day over six days when at camp. The other hours she spent waiting for those six hours of riding. After moving from Virginia as one of the most popular girls in junior high to a high school in Dallas, Texas, she became one of the most unpopular girls in school. Later, after graduating, she competed for the intercollegiate team at the University of Texas at Austin. Soon, she did a foolish thing, or not, and bought her first horse, Sorab, an experienced chestnut Thoroughbred using a brand new credit card she magically got as a student. She was judged in the arena for equitation and handling of the horse at Universities in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, and all over Texas. She and her husband, Nigel, enjoy horse camping vacations. Lori "stole" Hot Wheelz from Nigel and rode three 100-mile races with him, plus many 50-mile rides along with several other disciplines. The family of horses expanded to Groovy, Jasper, Johnny Cash, and Donkey Oti. Sadly, Finn passed away in 2019. Lori lives in Northern California, surrounded by trails. She rides her horses and has a business called Lori McIntosh Properties, helping people live in the country with their horses like her. Find out more about Lori and her adventures at www.lorimcintosh.com.

Strikers
Much has been written about the beautiful game of football and, to paraphrase Bill Shankly, for some, football is more serious than life and death. The 1926 General Strike in Britain and the impact on coal mining communities, has been researched thoroughly and has, rightly, highlighted the deprivation, famine, and hardships endured. Here we find the official minutes, written contemporaneously by the secretary, of a football club formed in the North East of England in August 1926 at the height of the strike in a mining community. As such this is a valuable primary source for historians.Alongside the minutes is context for the story from historical records to follow the team's fortunes during their first important season. This is not a story of hardship or self-pity; it is a sunny and uplifting tale and a rich example of the power and reach of football to sustain a community in times of austerity with lemons at half time and plenty of cups of tea. These minutes and the context in which they were written prove that any story about football is never just about football.
