Baseball was both an outlet and a salve, as she suffered through many operations and medical treatments. "Then one summer she got to attend therapy camp," reads a 1979 Los Angeles Times profile. "From her wheelchair, she was taught to catch and hit a baseball. It was magic. Quiet, reclusive Mary Dobkin returned to the hospital a new person, ignited by direct experience with baseball." She would go on to create and run baseball teams for underprivileged kids for decades, and her life story would become a movie starring Jean Stapleton. "The Ill-Fated Dodgers and Indians World Baseball Tour of 1952" by Matthew Jacob Abe Saperstein is best known as the founder of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, but he also was deeply involved in many aspects of professional baseball. With the US State Department's cooperation, Saperstein drafted plans for an international tour by big-league baseball teams in 1952--a trip that one sports editor called "the most ambitious barnstorming tour in the history of baseball." Saperstein's plan called for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Cleveland Indians to play a series of 22 games over a 60-day schedule, beginning in Hawaii and then continuing to Japan, India, Egypt, Australia, and North Africa. The Dodgers and Indians had been the first racially integrated teams in their respective leagues, and Secretary of State Dean Acheson referred to this dynamic as a key reason why the government would back the proposed tour. Because both teams had players "of every nationality, creed, and color," he wrote, the trip would attest to America's democratic values. "'Death to Flying Things' The Life and Times of a Spurious Nickname" by Richard Hershberger "Death to Flying Things" is one of the all-time great baseball nicknames, routinely included in lists of such things. Indeed, it serves double duty, attributed to two players: Robert Ferguson and John Chapman. Both men played for the Atlantic Club of Brooklyn in the 1860s, but, sadly, neither Ferguson nor Chapman was called "Death to Flying Things" during their playing careers, or for many years after. The nickname is entirely spurious. This article will attempt to explain where the supposed nickname came from in the first place, and how it got assigned to two different persons.

Hockey Priest
Born in Waterloo, Ontario, in 1924, to a prominent family, David Bauer attended St. Michael's College-School run by the Basilian Fathers of Toronto. After serving in World War II, Bauer joined the religious community and coached its St. Michael's Majors to a national championship in 1961. Influenced by philosophers like Jacques Maritain, Bauer tried to find solutions to problems created within elite hockey and thus founded Canada's first ever National Team program. This team countered the cutthroat ideals of hockey's powerbrokers and set out to return Canada to international glory. The team represented the nation at several global tournaments and three Winter Olympic Games. Bauer was posthumously inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.Hockey Priest looks past simply understanding Bauer as a do-gooder or hockey innovator. It shows how he attempted to create a different stream of hockey that could better support youth and so build up the nation. Archival research for the book uncovered Bauer-written hockey reports, speeches, and notes that detail his thinking about the game and his politicking to bring about change in it. Interviews with dozens of associates and family members told the story of his bold efforts to take on the National Hockey League. Despite his work being undermined by some supporters of the corporate game, Bauer offered a vision for Canada's sport that remains an important counterpoint in the sport's history and its ongoing challenges.

Insurgent Fandom offers a behind-the-scenes look at a transnational subculture known to few--ultra. As the most dedicated soccer fans, ultras support their team through collective singing, jumping, flag-waving, and lighting marine flares. While some characterize ultras as hooligans, author Max Jack argues that ultras' performative style of support is in part a protest informed by the ultras' constant friction with the state, the mainstream media, and the commercial priorities of sports' governing bodies. Because of this conflict with authority, fandom for ultras takes on a collective social life in which the game on the field often becomes a secondary concern. With political implications extending past the realm of sports, ultras have even become key actors in some of the most significant mass protests of the 21st century-including those in Cairo (2011), Istanbul (2013), and Kiev (2013). Insurgent Fandom embraces this politic of dissent at the heart of crowd action and casts a light on stadia as a breeding ground for alternative social and political possibilities.
The Good Doctor's Prescriptions
The great British golf course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie left a legacy of inspired writings on the many subjects that were of interest to him throughout his career. Naturally golf course architecture was his primary topic, yet he also had strong views on many other subjects including camouflage which dated back to his time in South Africa as a civil surgeon in the Boer War. Later he was the founder of the Royal Engineer's Camouflage School in WWI. As a doctor, medicine and health remained keen interests long after he swapped his stethoscope for the pen and paper of the golf course architect. Little was known of MacKenzie's views on politics and economics, yet his pro-capitalist and anti-socialist views become apparent when reading his well-reasoned Letters to the Editor, published here for the first time. This complete anthology has been assembled and edited by leading Australian golf course architect Neil Crafter and brings together all of Dr MacKenzie's writings apart from his two books. It begins with his first published article on the topic of labour-saving machinery in October 1911 and ends with a final article on golf course design in February 1935, published over a year after his death.Lavishly illustrated in full colour with many period photographs, drawings and plans, this book provides many fascinating insights into Dr MacKenzie's philosophies on golf course architecture and other subjects that were of continuing interest to him. The Good Doctor's Prescriptions
The great British golf course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie left a legacy of inspired writings on the many subjects that were of interest to him throughout his career. Naturally golf course architecture was his primary topic, yet he also had strong views on many other subjects including camouflage which dated back to his time in South Africa as a civil surgeon in the Boer War. Later he was the founder of the Royal Engineer's Camouflage School in WWI. As a doctor, medicine and health remained keen interests long after he swapped his stethoscope for the pen and paper of the golf course architect. Little was known of MacKenzie's views on politics and economics, yet his pro-capitalist and anti-socialist views become apparent when reading his well-reasoned Letters to the Editor, published here for the first time. This complete anthology has been assembled and edited by leading Australian golf course architect Neil Crafter and brings together all of Dr MacKenzie's writings apart from his two books. It begins with his first published article on the topic of labour-saving machinery in October 1911 and ends with a final article on golf course design in February 1935, published over a year after his death.Lavishly illustrated in full colour with many period photographs, drawings and plans, this book provides many fascinating insights into Dr MacKenzie's philosophies on golf course architecture and other subjects that were of continuing interest to him.
