Jelleyman's Thrown a Wobbly
The cult SkySports Soccer Saturday anchorman delivers a Sunday Times bestseller - a volley of entertaining and informative anecdotes about life in front of the videprinter. Jeff Stelling is a legend amongst football fans. To the millions unable to get to their teams' games on Saturday afternoons, the next best thing is undoubtedly the pleasurable company of Jeff and the Sky Sports videprinter for a cosy marathon on the sofa. If someone's got to reveal that your beloved team have just gone 3-0 down away from home and had a man sent off, it's best if it's consummate professional Jeff who breaks the news to you. Avid Hartlepool fan Jeff knows our pain and shares our joy...but mostly he knows our pain. The long-time host of SkySports' iconic Soccer Saturday show has become a cult figure, universally admired for his encyclopaedic knowledge of the game, his genuine and unlimited enthusiasm for ALL levels of football, and his wicked sense of humour which makes the six-hour long show simply whiz by. Jellyman's Thrown a Wobbly is a deliciously chaotic, hugely entertaining, anecdote-ridden, humorous taste of life in the Soccer Saturday studio. Hear what Jeff has to say about some of the show's legendary pundits over the years - ex-players such as George Best, Rodney Marsh, Chris Kamara, Charlie Nicholas and Matt Le Tissier. Be a fly on the wall of the hotel bar on Friday nights as Jeff and his guests gather for a natter and few drinks. Get the inside track on all those great one-liners: - "Mansfield Town's Gareth Jellyman has been shown the red card for dissent. Looks like Jellyman's thrown a wobbly."- "Darlington's equaliser has been scored by Guyain Ndumbu-Nsungu. Very much a case of local boy makes good." (He's from Congo.)- "They'll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions tonight."- "James Brown's grabbed a second for Hartlepool. I feel good!" Jellyman's Thrown a Wobbly goes a long way to demonstrate how a six-hour long, studio-based show with no live action pictures and featuring men gazing into TV monitors which the viewer can't see, can hold a huge audience enthralled every Saturday afternoon between August and May.

Nebraska Volleyball
When Title IX was enacted in 1972, the University of Nebraska volleyball program, like many across the country, received a fraction of the funding and attention given to the school's mighty football program. The players had to organize a run from Lincoln to Omaha to raise money for uniforms. The women were asked to wait their turn to use the weight room. Today the Nebraska women's volleyball team is one of the sport's most decorated programs--with more career wins than any other program and five NCAA National Championships--and draws standing-room-only crowds at home games in the 8,000-seat Devaney Center. Nebraska Volleyball is the first book to recount how volleyball took hold at Nebraska, through Pat Sullivan, the team's first coach; through such early figures as Cathy Noth, a decorated player and later an assistant coach into the 1990s; through Terry Pettit, who coached the team for twenty-three seasons and led it to its first National Championship in 1995; and through John Cook, who took over as head coach in 2000. John Mabry highlights the small Nebraska towns that have sent some of the best players to the program and helped build statewide support for the team. Public television helped too, with its power to broadcast games early on and thus build a following across the state. The success of Nebraska's volleyball program is one of the greatest stories in sports. As Karch Kiraly, head coach for the U.S. National Women's Volleyball Team, said: "If you want to learn about women's college volleyball, your first stop has to be Lincoln, Nebraska."

In the vast tapestry of life, dreams are the vibrant threads that weave stories of ambition and determination. Jack Thompson's journey is emblematic of every child who gazes at the stars and believes in the power of their own aspirations. Dreams are not the idle musings of the mind; they are the pulse of potential, the songs of our soul beckoning us toward greatness.Yet, for every dreamer, there stands a chorus of skeptics. Like shadows, they cling to us, casting doubts and emphasizing our limitations. But herein lies the paradox of dreams: they aren't born from abundance but from the tenacity of spirit. Jack's tale is a testament to the heart's resilience, echoing that real courage isn't just about chasing dreams but doing so when the entire world expects you to falter.Goytisolo's poignant words from the 1980s capture the essence of this journey: "Life is beautiful, you will see..." Through Jack's story, we are gently reminded that amid life's trials, a beacon of hope, love, and camaraderie always emerges.
Valley of Dreams
Charlton Athletic represent a model of how a Premiership football club should be run. Former manager Alan Curbishley reveals the secrets of the club's success - from the boardroom and manager's office down to the dressing room and pitchside - and reflects on how the club went from homeless strugglers to challenging football's elite. Alan Curbishley encountered most of football's ill winds during the 15 years he was coach, co-manager, then sole manager of Charlton - a club once homeless, with gates of less than 3000, forced to sell players to pay the wages and to buy replacement kit for the first team, and teetering on the brink of extinction. Galvanised by fans, staff, forward-thinking board members and a shrewd manager, the Addicks now find themselves firmly established with the Premiership big boys and a shining example of how a successful football club should be run. In his book, Curbishley opens the lid on the soap opera that is Charlton FC. He writes about the political manoeuvrings behind the club's departure and then emotional return to The Valley. He describes how the they were torn asunder by drugs allegations involving three of its players, including a youthful Lee Bowyer. He re-lives the tortuous rollercoaster ride of falling out of the Premiership two years later before returning in 1999/2000. And he gives an insider's view of the club's success in establishing itself in the world's toughest league, including a full update on their 2005/06 season. He also talks candidly about being shortlisted for the England manager's job. His book is a radical insight into the workings of a football club and its staff, and is sure to attract widespread interest from football fans across the country.

The Essential Arlott on Cricket
Essential writings about cricket by the essential cricket commentator. '"Essential" is a big word in terms of ambition, but the contents of this book were essential in their time to the writer - but, while he cannot claim that they will be that to a reader, he wishes everyone who does read them something of the pleasure he had from writing them.' John Arlott, from the Preface Across a broadcasting career of some thirty-four years, the late John Arlott's commentating on cricket, above all on 'Test Match Special', earned him a popularity and affection unmatched by any who followed him. As Ian Botham noted, 'He was Cricket, there has never been a commentator like him and there never will be.' This book collects together his writings on cricket and cricketers across forty years. It contains pen portraits of the game's famous and not so famous figures, as well as jottings, diary entries and articles written for, among others, 'The Cricketer', 'Wisden Cricket Monthly' and the 'Guardian'. The qualities of his commentary that endeared him to listeners - articulate, leisurely, unfussy, but with a turn of phrase that was almost poetic - are all to be found here. For admirers of Arlott himself, and for anyone who cares about cricket, THE ESSENTIAL ARLOTT is essential reading.

Breaking Through the Lines
Marion Motley was recognized as one of the gridiron's most outstanding players when he was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968 in his hometown of Canton, Ohio. His legacy off the field, as one of four Black players to reintegrate pro football in 1946, helped blaze a path for Black athletes in the highest echelons of professional sports, including baseball's Jackie Robinson. Yet, the story of one of the sport's greatest and most impactful players remains unknown to most Americans. Black players once thrived during the early days of the NFL. Then a "gentleman's agreement" among NFL owners in 1933 kept those players out of the highest level of the sport for the next 12 years. That changed in 1946. Hall of Fame coach Paul Brown, a native of Massillon, Ohio, was putting together the inaugural Cleveland Browns roster and signed Black players Motley and Bill Willis to be a part of it. That same year, Kenny Washington and Woody Strode also signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Years earlier, Brown had coached his high school team against Motley's. They formed a strong partnership first with a Navy team and then in Cleveland, where Motley twice led his league in rushing yards and helped the Browns win five championships. Motley's efforts to play a physically brutal game in the face of societal racism and state-sanctioned Jim Crow laws helped reintegrate American sports. Yet half a century after Motley's enshrinement to the Hall of Fame, the memory of Motley and his accomplishments on and off the field have begun to fade, including in the city where he first made his name. This book tells Motley's story of adversity, personal tragedy, and triumphs using archival interviews and new interviews with historians, friends, and descendants.

The Stars Shone on Philadelphia
In 1934, Ed Bolden's Philadelphia Stars joined the new Negro National League II (NNL2), which had been founded one year earlier. After fending off their intrastate-rivals, the Pittsburgh Crawfords, the Stars claimed the NNL2's second-half championship and faced the first-half champions for the title. They defeated the Chicago American Giants to claim the NNL2 crown.Over two dozen SABR members researched the Stars' history for this book, which includes biographies of as many of the team's players as possible, even those who participated in only a single game. The 1934 Stars featured future Hall of Famers Raleigh "Biz" Mackey and Jud Wilson; stalwarts like Phil Cockrell, Webster McDonald, and Chaney White; shooting star Stewart "Slim" Jones; and temporary fill-ins like Frederick Coleman and Clifford "Whip" Irons.Majority owner Ed Bolden, a vital figure in the history of Philadelphia baseball, and minority owner/booking agent Eddie Gottlieb-who is better known to basketball fans-are both featured, as well, along with the history of the Stars' home ballpark in 1934, Passon Field, named after another prominent local baseball entrepreneur. Also included is a complete season timeline, articles about select games such as the epic September 9 Satchel Paige-Slim Jones pitching duel at Yankee Stadium, and a comprehensive write-up of the NNL2 championship series complete this portrait of the 1934 title-winning team.
Presunto inocente / Presumed Innocent
Old Lady Somerset is a fiercely stubborn old bird. In her lifetime she has successfully resisted five attempts at eviction. Within living memory there are two aborted attempts to relocate to Heathfield. Outwith living memory there are failed attempts to move to Carrick Street Oval (1894) and Dam Park (1914 and again in 1919). The lessons of history have been learned. It is not required to have the gift of prophecy to know that there will be no further attempts to remove her from her residence in Hawkhill. She is not a tolerant host. This book is not about football per se. It is a study of Somerset Park, detailing modifications great and small. Old Lady Somerset is not averse to enjoying a spin. The original playing pitch has twice been spun by 45簞. Within these pages the text is punctuated by contemporary maps in order to convey the full impact. Ground rotation may be categorised as major change but ample credence has been afforded to modifications which, although more minor, are nonetheless considered to be significant. It fires the imagination to think of the original stand being dismantled at Beresford Park then conveyed in a series of horse-drawn carts, down the High Street and over to Hawkhill to be reassembled. However It would be wise not to give away any more spoilers at this stage lest it detracts from the suspense of wondering what happened next.

Win or Else
In Win or Else, Larry E. Holmes shows us how Soviet football culture regularly disregarded official ideological and political imperatives and skirted the boundaries between socialism and capitalism. In the early 1920s, the Soviet press denounced football as a bourgeois sport that was injurious to both mind and body. Within that same decade, however, it blew up, becoming the most popular spectator sport in the USSR and growing into a fiercely competitive business with complex regional and national bureaucracies, a strong international presence, and a conviction that victory on the field was also a victory of Soviet supremacy. Writing as both historian and fan, Holmes focuses his study on the provincial Kirov team Dinamo from 1979 to 1985, when the club played at both its worst and its best. Spurred by a dismal 1979 season, the team's administrators and regional authorities had two options: obey Moscow's edict to reduce expenditures on professional sports or seek out new--and often illicit--funding sources to fill out a team of champions. Drawing on rich archival materials as well as newspapers and interviews with former players, Win or Else reveals the foundations of Soviet sports culture--and the hazards that teams faced both in victory and in loss.

The Legendary Caddies of Augusta National
Starting in the 1930s, the Black caddies of Augusta National walked the course with the world's greatest golfers. This book tells their stories, forever entwined with the history of the game. They used nicknames like Stovepipe, Burnt Biscuits, Skillet, Skinny, and Marble Eye. They worked for presidents of the United States, captains of industry, and the greatest golfers in the world. Their real names were Carl Jackson, Willie Perteet, and Matthew Palmer-and they witnessed every great moment, both private and public, at Augusta National beginning in the1930s--from Gene Sarazen's "shot heard 'round the world" to Jack Nicklaus winning a record five of his six Masters. Read why Nicklaus said he wouldn't trade caddie Willie "Pete" Peterson "for a million dollars" and what Willie "Cemetery" Perteet really thought of President Eisenhower's golf game. The Black caddies of Augusta National also endured, in their own ways, the racist social order of the sport and at the same time participated, albeit vicariously, in its many thrills. Ward Clayton documents their stories--history as compelling as the game of golf itself.

No Friday Night Lights
2024 American Writing Awards Finalist in Sports No Friday Night Lights is the story of a rural Nevada high school football team that never wins. Veteran reporter John M. Glionna examines the 2022 season in which the McDermitt Bulldogs practiced for weeks in the summer only to learn once again that they had come up short of the necessary players due to the dwindling population on the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation on the Nevada-Oregon border. Eight-man football helps give the coaches and kids a sense of community--despite a lack of wins, and despite their home's status as one of the most remote locations for a public school in the West. Glionna's relationships with coaches, players, parents--and even those McDermitt residents remotely connected to high school football--provide telling insights into local lives, many of them from the Paiute and Shoshone tribes of Fort McDermitt. Although victory and recognition elude the players, Glionna illuminates their hard work and dedication--leaving the reader with glimpses of life on the ground in "flyover" country.
The Modern Medicine Game
IN 2010, MEMBERS OF THE HAUDENOSAUNEE NATIONALS (formerly the Iroquois Nationals) lacrosse team, representing the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of six Indigenous Nations in North America, were sitting in a hotel in New York City instead of playing on the field in Manchester, England, competing for a world championship. The Nationals were told they couldn't use their Haudenosaunee passports to travel to the UK; only Canadian or American passports would be accepted, effectively denying that this Confederacy had sovereignty and reinforcing the authority of the colonial powers. Media coverage of this pivotal event sparked the curiosity of longtime international lacrosse coach and player Travis Taylor. He wanted to learn more about the intersection of the sport and the traditional beliefs of the Indigenous people who originally developed the sport-or as they call it Tewa'獺 raton. Originally written as Taylor's PhD thesis, The Modern Medicine Game: Lacrosse, the Haudenosaunee, and Reconciliation postulates how lacrosse is a "modern medicine game," and is a crucial element of reconciliation, decolonization, and resilience for the Haudenosaunee peoples. It explores what led the Haudenosaunee Nationals to assert their self-determination in 2010 by reaching back into time to understand the origins of the sport as a gift from the Creator, and its adoption and evolution by English-speaking people, most notably William George Beers.

Gus Hornsby’s Gamble
In the 1870s, Gus Hornsby spread the game of American football around the world like an evangelist and helped establish it in the U.S. heartland. Hornsby seemed destined for greatness as a journalist, inventor, explorer and entrepreneur. His arrogance, greed and an intractable gambling addiction, however, drove him to criminality and cast him into obscurity. But this public ruin led to his greatest accomplishment in prison: personal redemption. Surprisingly, Hornsby's meteoric rise and fall intersected with towering influencers of the time, including the women and men who would pioneer the "first-wave" feminist movement in the United States. This book explores their unexpected connections and interweaves their stories--along with details of the first American football game in the Midwest--to reveal elements of a pivotal moment in American history, both in feminism and sports. More than a biography of a person, it is a story about America--brash, imaginative and seemingly limitless in resources and creativity, but overly self-assured and wildly reckless.

The National Pastime, 2023
Welcome to the windswept plains, lakeshores, towns, and church ballfields in the heart of the Midwest. In this issue of The National Pastime, we barnstorm through Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin, as well as several stops in Illinois, both in Chicago and in towns just a train ride away. The last time the SABR convention was in Chicago, in 2015, the focus was very much on the urban center. So when we found out SABR would be returning to Chicago for the 2023 summer convention, we wanted to broaden the horizon of the publication to see what interesting stories could be discovered if we included not just Illinois but its bordering states. SABR members responded with a plethora of tales. Some of them do concern favorite Chicago topics like beloved Bill Veeck and bedeviled Buck Weaver, and both Smiling Stan Hack and Hack Wilson, Cap Anson and Ken Holtzman, but we'll also meet a Mexican women's baseball team based in East Chicago (Indiana), minor league teams from Michigan City (also Indiana) and Wausau, Wisconsin, some baseball-savvy politicians (like Col. Frank Leslie Smith), a card-collecting magnate (Larry Fritsch), and hear all about the Negro Leagues teams who barnstormed through Iowa on a regular basis--often playing each other in league play.

The Real Hoosiers
The true story behind Crispus Attucks High School and the all-Black basketball team loosely depicted as the championship opponent in the beloved classic sports movie Hoosiers. For far too long the mythology of Indiana basketball has been dominated by Hoosiers. Framed as the ultimate underdog, feel-good story, there has also long been a cultural debate surrounding the film. The Real Hoosiers sets out to illuminate the narrative that the film omits, the story of the unheralded Crispus Attucks Tigers, playing the game at the highest level in the 1950s in a racially divided Indiana. After a crushing loss to Milan High School in the 1954 semifinal, which was the game that the final scenes in Hoosiers are based on, Attucks went on to win back-to-back Indiana state championships. That team was led by a young Oscar Robertson and coached by Ray Crowe, who fully recognized the seemingly insurmountable challenges of playing basketball in a state that was a bastion for not only the game but also the Ku Klux Klan. Veteran sportswriter and the bestselling author of Dream Team, Jack McCallum, pulls back the curtain on that history, which is rich, far beyond the basketball court. The Real Hoosiers replaces a lacuna in the history of Indiana while dissecting the myths and lore of Hoosier hoops; placing the game in the context of migration, segregation, and integration; and enhancing our understanding of this country's struggle for civil rights.
When Panthers Roared
From 1889 to 1964, the Fort Worth Panthers--unofficially nicknamed and always known as the Cats--represented the essence of baseball in America. In their early seasons they reflected the outraged pride of the South and West in a bitter rivalry with the northeastern baseball powers, a regional disaffection whose roots stretched back to the Civil War. (The first official baseball game in Texas was played just after the war; the competing Texas teams were nicknamed the Stonewall Jacksons and the R. E. Lees). The Cats franchise was finally dissolved when major league baseball completed its national expansion by placing a team in nearby Arlington. In between, the Cats set professional sports records that have never been equaled, including winning the Texas League title six years in a row and establishing themselves as perhaps the most famous minor league team in baseball history. From vintage Panthers such as power-hitting first baseman Clarence "Big Boy" Kraft and colorful Hall-of-Fame manager Rogers Hornsby to more modern Cats heroes such as Duke Snider, Carl Erskine, and Maury Wills, Fort Worth and the baseball-obsessed Southwest formed a high profile partnership that even survived a season when the spectator stands burned one day and the playing field was flooded a week later. Cats fans wouldn't be denied; they sat around the field on folding chairs, and no games were postponed. Partially oral history, When Panthers Roared includes interviews with baseball greats Hank Aaron, Wally Moon, Dick Williams, Maury Wills, and co-author Bobby Bragan. Williams and Wills were Cats mainstays; Bragan managed the team during its great post-WW II years when baseball guru Branch Rickey made Fort Worth part of the Brooklyn Dodger farm system and stocked it with his finest young athletes. But during the Cats heyday, there were just sixteen major league teams who played out of ten U.S. cities. When Panthers Roared captures the excitement and pride the minor-league Cats brought to Texas and the Southwest. It was a time when, Bobby Bragan insists, "any man lucky enough to be a Fort Worth Cat was as proud of that as he would have been to play for the New York Yankees." When Panthers Roared is lavishly illustrated through the cooperation of Mark Presswood, whose sports collection features Cats memorabilia. Additional short interviews feature the late Joe DiMaggio, Vincent Devaney, and Leo Durocher.

The Last Dance

Instead, they were told their school was canceling baseball altogether, and that the 2021 season would be its last for the Eagles. Across the nation, historically black colleges and university baseball programs, are on the chopping block. This is the true story of the events leading up to that fateful day and how the NCCU baseball family persevered over the following months. Assistant Coach and author, Ed Porcelli, gives a first-hand account of how the players, coaches, friends, and baseball alumni of NCCU baseball, dealt with the loss of its program. What was the real reason as to why the administration decided to drop baseball? Was this really a financial decision due to the covid pandemic, or were there other factors at play? Be in the dugout, with the players and coaches, as Central enjoys its best and last season representing the Eagles. Presidential photographer Al Drago illustrates the many different emotions of the players during their final season, capturing the last moments of the Eagles, before their inevitable extinction.
When Revelation Comes
Named one of the 10 Best Golf Books in 2022 by LINKS MagazineWhen Revelation Comes is the story of one man's search for peace. Along the way, he meets people whose compassion and empathy help him keep going. It's a story about fathers and sons. It's a story of a friendship between two people from different cultures and backgrounds. It's also a story of how a game can be a framework for life.On May 17, 2021, an unthinkable tragedy struck a tight knit family in the small town of Hartselle, Alabama. Jordan, a talented and promising junior golfer, died suddenly of an accidental drug overdose. He was only 21 years old. His father, Jim Hartsell, had spent most of the previous ten years supporting his son's attempt to succeed in the challenging world of junior and college golf. The grief was crushing, and the feeling of guilt overwhelming. When nothing else made sense, the author did the only thing he could think of: take a trip to his beloved Scotland in search for answers.Jim Hartsell had fallen in love with Scottish links golf as a child while watching the 1977 Open Championship at Turnberry, his father's favorite tournament. He and his father went on to take several trips to Scotland together, to places like Dunaverty, Machrihanish, and Cruden Bay. Visiting and studying the lesser-known golf courses of Scotland became a lifelong passion for Hartsell. Along the way, he also fell in love with Scotland and its people. When his life seemed over, that love was reciprocated and became his salvation. When Revelation Comes is a requiem for a lost child, and a parent's search for reasons to continue in the face of crushing grief. It's also a love letter to Scotland: it's golf, culture, and wonderful people. It's a reminder to look to the people and places around you: the answers to your questions may be there.
