Jackie
No one can doubt the immense courage shown by Jackie Robinson when he took his position at Ebbets Field on Tuesday afternoon, April 15, 1947. The first play of the game was a ground ball to third base, and Robinson, playing first, took the throw to make the first putout. It wasn't just the one moment that was important, of course, but the ongoing significance of his presence on the field. Robinson was the first Black American to play what was then defined as major-league baseball at a time when baseball was dominant in American culture-truly the National Pastime-but an institution which had been segregated by race. After Robinson completed his 10-year Hall of Fame playing career, the six-time All-Star with a lifetime on-base percentage of .409 took his rightful place in Cooperstown.Perhaps it is true that celebrating Jackie Robinson's courageous role in integration can sometimes reduce him to a symbol, over-simplify his complex grappling with the racial issues of his day, and turn him into a convenient and self-congratulatory icon celebrated by Major League Baseball today. But, in fact, he was-and remains-a meaningful and inspirational symbol. The articles in this book look beyond the oft-told tale of April 15, 1947, and examine many facets of Robinson's life and career.Almost all of the articles in Jackie were written specifically for this book. Some 54 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) contributed their work as authors and editors to bring together a book that offers a variety of perspectives on "42."
Gunners And Gooners
This book is a true reflection of the personal memories of a lifelong Arsenal fan who, despite being born in a predominately Chelsea-supporting enclave of London, started going to Highbury in 1957 as an 8-year-old schoolboy and had lived through all the triumphs and tragedies up until 2018.These were experiences that many Old Gunners and Gooners, and all football fans, will either relate to or discover for the first time, depending on their age. It's written with humour, honesty and insight and details how the North Bank got its name plus all the great mates, terrace characters, legendary players and funny stories that have been encountered along the way.As an old mate of mine once said, "You can change your wife but not your football team".
Big League Life
The Major League Baseball season is an annual drama that begins when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training and ends amid a flurry of confetti and hysteria. But that's only part of the story. It's the people that make baseball such captivating theater. Athletes from different backgrounds, each on their own path, come together for nine months to determine whether they have the talent, chemistry, and dumb luck required to parade through the streets when the games are over. Big League Life, a work of fiction, follows the journey of one such ball club and celebrates the personalities and characters one might find at work and play both within the confines and far afield of Major League ballparks.Professional baseball unfolds on palatial fields held captive within cement and steel; ballparks are at once beautiful and imposing. However, people - flaws and all - make America's National Pastime a beautiful game. This is their story. While a work of fiction, Big League Life is the result of years of research interviews, and first-hand accounts provided by several men and women who call the "big league life" their life.

My United Road
"For as long as I can remember, whenever I was asked 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' I always gave the same reply: 'I'm going to play for the Reds. Manchester United. Nobody else matters'."Manchester, 1974, and seven-year-old Nicky Welsh is about to set foot in Old Trafford for the first time. This is the beginning of a five-decade love affair with football and a passion for Manchester United that will define Nicky's life for ever.My United Road tells the true story of the fan who made it onto the pitch - almost. Baseball’s Greatest Comeback Games
What are Major League Baseball's greatest comeback games? This book set out to collect the stories of those games, but rather than throw together an anecdotally-determined collection of games, SABR decided to see if there was an objective measure, a way to determine which was the greatest comeback game of all time, and to rank the games. Retrosheet's Tom Ruane created a master list of 630 games and ranked them mathematically in terms of how unlikely the win was, and therefore how great the comeback had been. The games in this volume are presented in rank order, from number 1 through 64.We also added the greatest postseason comeback games. These seven contests are presented in a separate section devoted to postseason games. And to make sure that every current team in MLB was represented in this volume, we treated the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants as different from the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, and added the greatest comeback by the Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, and several other teams. In the end, every major-league team in represented in Baseball's Greatest Comeback Games, but the Phillies lead the list with six comeback wins in the top 64. Tied for second for most comebacks are four American League teams: the Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, and Yankees. This book was a team effort by 60 members of the Society for American Baseball Research, who researched and wrote about all 80 games presented herein.

Stealing Home
The "scrupulously detailed" (Los Angeles Times) story of how the fight to build Dodgers Stadium, and transform Los Angeles into a big league city, came at the cost of everyday Angelenos Dodger Stadium is an American icon. But the story of how it came to be goes far beyond baseball. The hills that cradle the stadium were once home to three vibrant Mexican American communities. In the early 1950s, those communities were condemned to make way for a utopian public housing project. Then, in a remarkable turn, public housing in the city was defeated amidst a Red Scare conspiracy. Instead of getting their homes back, the remaining residents saw the city sell their land to Walter O'Malley, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now LA would be getting a different sort of utopian fantasy -- a glittering, ultra-modern stadium. But before Dodger Stadium could be built, the city would have to face down the neighborhood's families -- including one, the Ar矇chigas, who refused to yield their home. The ensuing confrontation captivated the nation - and the divisive outcome still echoes through Los Angeles today.
Swing Kings
"The best baseball book I've read in years." -- Sam Walker - "An exhilarating story of innovation." -- Ben Reiter - "Swing Kings feels like a spiritual successor to Moneyball." -- Baseball ProspectusFrom the Wall Street Journal's national baseballwriter, the captivating story of the home run boom, following a group ofplayers who rose from obscurity to stardom and the rogue swing coaches whohelped them usher the game into a new age. We are in a historic era for the home run. The2019 season saw the most homers ever, obliterating a record set just two yearsbefore. It is a shift that has transformed the way the game is played, contributing to more strikeouts, longer games, and what feels like the logicalconclusion of the analytics era. In SwingKings, Wall Street Journal national baseball writer JaredDiamond reveals that the secret behind this unprecedented shift isn't steroidsor the stitching of the baseballs, it's the most elemental explanation of all: the swing. In this lively narrative romp, he tracks a group of baseball'sbiggest stars--including Aaron Judge, J.D. Martinez, and Justin Turner--whoremade their swings under the tutelage of a band of renegade coaches, andremade the game in the process. Thesecoaches, many of them baseball washouts who have reinvented themselves asswing gurus, for years were one of the game's best-kept secrets. Amongtheir ranks are a swimming pool contractor, the owner of a billiards hall, andan ex-hippie whose swing insights draw from surfing and the technique ofJapanese samurai. Now, as Diamond artfully charts, this motley cast has movedfrom the baseball margins to its center of power. They are changing the wayhitting is taught to players of all ages, and major league clubs are scramblingfor their services, hiring them in record numbers as coaches and consultants. AndDiamond himself, whose baseball career ended in high school, enlists thetutelage of each swing coach he profiles, with an aim toward starring in theannual Boston-New York media game at Yankee Stadium. Swing Kings isboth a rollicking history of baseball's recent past and a deeply reported, character-driven account of a battle between opponents as old as time: old andnew, change and stasis, the establishment and those who break from it. JaredDiamond has written a masterful chronicle of America's pastime at thecrossroads.

The the Story of the Masters
The Story of the Masters is the first comprehensive year-by-year history of the world's most famous golf tournament. Veteran golf journalist David Barrett draws upon contemporaneous reporting and other source material to offer dramatic accounts of each year the tournament has been played, starting in 1934. The story of the tournament progresses from the early years when it was founded by golf great Bobby Jones and quickly established itself as an elite event, to the post-World War II era when Sam Snead and Ben Hogan dominated. The thrilling exploits of dashing hero Arnold Palmer brought the tournament into the television age and the sustained excellence of Jack Nicklaus helped to further the prestige of the tournament. Nearly two full decades of European dominance of the Masters heralded the international age of golf. Then Tiger Woods came along and used the Augusta stage for his coming-out party in 1997 and then for his epic comeback in 2019. In Barrett's telling, each year has its own story to tell as the Augusta National course provides the perfect setting for tournament excitement, noted for suspenseful back-and-forth action between multiple contenders --- the norm at the Masters. The nature of the course's layout creates opportunities for stirring charges and heroic shots to determine the champion, while filled with enough danger to provoke monumental collapses that also become part of Masters lore. Through the decades, the game's greatest players have shined their brightest at the Masters. Many golfing careers have been shaped and defined by this tournament, and Barrett shares unknown and forgotten stories of not only the sport's stars, but also the many others who challenged them over the years at Augusta.

The Golfing Brain
In Emotions, Luck, and the Myth of Momentum, the second volume in his The Golfing Brain series, psychiatrist and golfer James H. Grubbs once again draws from the latest brain science to offer new insights on what works (and what doesn't work) in the quest for successful golf. If it's common knowledge that our unconscious mind "runs the show," asks the author, why would a golfer use conscious techniques to overcome unconscious obstacles to good golf? He explains why techniques such as previsualizing good shots, "faking it till you make it," or trying to suppress fear and anxiety can undermine performance in golf rather than promote it. This book also explores: - confidence versus certainty - the influence of luck - the interplay of emotions during competition - the myth of momentum in golf

Kg: A to Z
NATIONAL BESTSELLER A unique, unfiltered memoir from the NBA champion and fifteen-time all-star ahead of his induction into the Hall of Fame. Kevin Garnett was one of the most dominant players the game of basketball has ever seen. He was also one of its most outspoken. Over the course of his illustrious twenty-one-year NBA career, he elevated trash talk to an art form and never shied away from sharing his thoughts on controversial subjects. In KG A to Z, published ahead of Garnett's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he looks back on his life and career with the same raw candor. Garnett describes the adversity he faced growing up in South Carolina before ultimately relocating to Chicago, where he became one of the top prospects in the nation. He details his headline-making decision to skip college and become the first player in two decades to enter the draft directly from high school, starting a trend that would be followed by future superstars like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. He shares stories of playing with and against Bryant, James, Michael Jordan, and other NBA greats, and he chronicles his professional ups and downs, including winning a championship with the Boston Celtics. He also speaks his mind on a range of topics beyond basketball, such as fame, family, racism, spirituality, and music. Garnett's draft decision wasn't the only way he'd forever change the game. His ability to play on the perimeter as a big man foreshadowed the winning strategy now universally adopted by the league. He applies this same innovative spirit here, organizing the contents alphabetically as an encyclopedia. If you thought Kevin Garnett was exciting, inspiring, and unfiltered on the court, just wait until you read what he has to say in these pages.

The Season of Living Dangerously
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected virtually every aspect of life in America, and Major League Baseball in 2020 was no exception. From the day in March when MLB announced postponement of the season, to the commencement on July 23 of a 60-game "regular" season, through the completion of the World Series, this was a baseball season unlike any other. The Season of Living Dangerously records the views of a lifelong baseball fan as he watched this unique season unfold-games played in empty ballparks, new rules implemented to speed up play, Covid-19 cancellations, players and management openly expressing their views on racial inequity in America, the postseason expanded to allow over half the teams to participate, and the World Series held for the first time at a neutral site. This account of the 2020 season addresses the conflicting feelings many fans had about whether the truncated 60-game schedule could be considered a legitimate season and whether the games should be played at all while the pandemic persisted around the country. But it also reflects a fan's appreciation for the things that make baseball rewarding to watch as he experienced the strangest of baseball seasons.
Winning in Both Leagues
In Winning in Both Leagues J. Frank Cashen looks back over his twenty-five-year career in baseball. Best known as the general manager of the New York Mets during their remaking and rise to glory in the 1980s, Cashen fills the pages with lively stories from his baseball tenure during the last half of the twentieth century. His career included a stint with the Baltimore Orioles of the late sixties and early seventies, working with manager Earl Weaver and great teams, including such players as Jim Palmer, Frank Robinson, and Brooks Robinson. Later, tapped by Mets owner Nelson Doubleday Jr. to bring the Mets to the pinnacle of Major League Baseball, Cashen, with the rise of superstars Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden, led the Mets to the thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Boston Red Sox leading to the World Series championship in 1986. Winning in Both Leagues also chronicles the drafting of Billy Beane, who would later be the focus of the New York Times best seller Moneyball. Cashen, who was a central figure in the fierce competition with New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, excelled at building winning ball clubs and remains one of only three general managers ever to win a World Series in both leagues.

The Victory Machine
How money, guts, and greed built the Warriors dynasty -- and then took it apartThe Golden State Warriors dominated the NBA for the better part of a decade. Since the arrival of owner Joe Lacob, they won more championships and sold more merchandise than any other franchise in the sport. And in 2019, they opened the doors on a lavish new stadium.Yet all this success contained some of the seeds of decline. Ethan Sherwood Strauss's clear-eyed expos矇 reveals the team's culture, its financial ambitions and struggles, and the price that its players and managers have paid for all their winning. From Lacob's unlikely acquisition of the team to Kevin Durant's controversial departure, Strauss shows how the smallest moments can define success or failure for years. And, looking ahead, Strauss ponders whether this organization can rebuild after its abrupt fall from the top, and how a relentless business wears down its players and executives. The Victory Machine is a defining book on the modern NBA: it not only rewrites the story of the Warriors, but shows how the Darwinian business of pro basketball really works.
U Must Be Cinderella!
Many call it the biggest upset in sports history. Bigger than the Jets over the Colts in Super Bowl III. Bigger than the U.S. hockey team's "Miracle on Ice" win over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Bigger than Buster Douglas's stunning KO of Mike Tyson 10 years later. When little-known UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) takes the floor against mighty Virginia in the first round of the 2018 NCAA men's basketball tournament, the whole world knows the Retrievers will lose. They're 20 1/2-point underdogs. ESPN's Power Basketball Index gives them a 1.5 per cent chance of winning. They're a lowly 16-seed going against the overall no. 1-seed. And a 16 has never beaten a 1. Never, ever.Yet on a magical weekend in Charlotte, N.C., the odds go up in flames. March Madness hits a whole new level. This is the dramatic story of the singular team that made bracket-busting history and thrilled a nation, and the school that headline writers and social media pundits were now calling - devoid of irony - "U MUST BE CINDERELLA!"
Deferred Glory
Deferred Glory: Heroes of the Baseball Negro Leagues is about the lives, struggles and desire of negroes to one day become professional baseball players in the Major Leagues. During this period of their lives, these players while playing in the Negro League endured tough traveling to ballparks in cities both in the South and North in order to play baseball. They suffered through segregation mostly in the South both on and off the field. These men withstood horrible treatment because of their dreams to become Major League baseball players. Eventually, these thirty-five players and executives were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Unfortunately many were inducted posthumously. "It took the Baseball Hall of Fame decades-and not a little prodding-to do right by some of the greatest and best-loved stars of the Negro Leagues. It took Danny Ingellis six months, as an homage to a friend. Buck O'Neil would be proud." Jay Price, retired sportswriter, author of Thanksgiving 1959 "Deferred Glory: Heroes of the Negro Baseball Leagues is a home run! Travel back in time as author Dan Ingellis takes a close-up look of some of the men who played in the Negro Leagues, which provided talented athletes of color a place to play since they were not allowed to participate in the all-white Major Leagues until Jackie Robinson suited up for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Ingellis details the rampant racism and terrible living conditions the players had to endure. Deferred Glory is a terrific read for any avid baseball fan." Joseph D'Amodio, sports journalist Staten Island Advance & SILive.com "As America moves through another step in its tortured race history, no debut book could be more timely than Dan Ingellis's, "Deferred Glory: Heroes of the Negro Baseball Leagues." The lively collection of brief histories of some of the Negro League stars robbed by our National Pastime's original sin of segregation is a primer on why the lives of men like Monte Irvin's should be taught in Middle School classes across the land."Cormac Gordon, Baseball Hall of Fame voter and former NYC newspaper columnist "Now that Major League Baseball has recognized the Negro Leagues as major leagues, and is endeavoring to import the statistics of the many players who toiled there for decades, "Deferred Glory: Heroes of the Negro Baseball Leagues" is a timely and fresh look at the stories of the players who excelled in the Negro leagues. Readers will be introduced to those trailblazers who paved the way for so many that followed. Their abilities, personalities, perseverance, and love of the game, are reflected in this easy to read summary which will be appreciated by every baseball fan." U Must Be Cinderella!

The Giants and Their City
Searching for a home and a homerun-an overlooked era of Giants and San Francisco history The San Francisco Giants have been one of the most successful franchises in baseball in the twenty-first century as evidenced by the three World Series Championship flags flying in the breeze over Oracle Park, one of the most beautiful baseball venues in the world. However, the team was not always so successful on or off the field. The Giants and Their City tells the story of a Giants franchise that had no recognizable stars, was last in the league in attendance, and had more than one foot out the door on the way to Toronto when a local businessman and a brand new mayor found a way to keep the team in San Francisco. Over the next 17 years, the team had some very good years, but more than few terrible ones, while trying to find a home in a city with a unique and confounding political culture. The Giants and Their City relates how the team struggles to win ballgames, find its way back to the playoffs, but also to stay in San Francisco when, at times, it wasn't clear the city wanted them. This book is a baseball story about beloved Giants players like Vida Blue, Willie McCovey, Kevin Mitchell, and Robby Thompson, and includes interviews with Art Agnos, Frank Jordan, Dianne Feinstein, John Montefusco, Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, Mike Krukow, Dave Dravecky and Bob Lurie among others. The book features descriptions of important events in Giants history like the Mike Ivie grand slam, the Joe Morgan home run, the 1987 playoffs, the 1989 team, the Dave Dravecky game and the earthquake World Series. It's also a uniquely San Francisco story that shows how sports teams and cities often have very complex relationships.

The Miracle Has Landed
Celebrate the 1969 Miracle Mets in this new, updated SABR edition of The Miracle Has Landed. Seven seasons after the Mets debuted with the most losses in modern baseball history, the franchise was still seen as a laughingstock, with 100-to-1 odds to win the World Series when 1969 began. The first year of divisional play started out as the Cubs' year, while most onlookers figured the Mets would be happy if they could play .500 ball. Tom Seaver's "Imperfect Game" against Chicago showed that the Mets could play with the big boys, but the Cubs still had a double-digit lead on the Mets in the middle of August. The Cubs stumbled, plagued by worn-out players, black cats, and bad luck, and magnificent Mets pitching turned the tide. The Miracle Has Landed celebrates the lovable Mets like no other book, complete with photos and artifacts of the time. A project of the Society for American Baseball Research, this volume gathers the collective efforts of more than thirty SABR members and features profiles of every player, coach, broadcaster, and significant front-office member connected to that great Mets squad. Included are biographies of the recently departed "Franchise" player, Tom Seaver, and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, beloved manager Gil Hodges, the talented outfield of Cleon Jones, Tommie Agee, and Ron Swoboda, drill sergeant backstop Jerry Grote, crucial mid-season acquisition Donn Clendenon, scrappy shortstop Bud Harrelson, and a pitching staff that went far deeper than just Seaver and Ryan. More than fifty years later the Miracle Mets are still revered, the first world champion expansion team and the club that stole New York's heart.
Leo Najo
One of the first Latinos to play professional baseball in the United States, Leo Najo debuted in 1924 with the San Antonio Bears of the Class A Texas League. After electrifying the San Antonio crowds with his incredible speed and astonishing outfield catches, Najo was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the winter of 1925. Although he has since been largely forgotten by baseball historians, The Washington Post once called him "one of the greatest baseball players of all time." Overcoming the bitter racism in baseball against all players of color, Najo drew strength from his deep love for the game, rising to the heights of stardom in spite of tremendous obstacles. Through his amazing accomplishments, Najo opened the doors of professional baseball for the many outstanding Latino players that followed. Although his career with the White Sox was cut short by a serious leg injury, Najo persevered and transformed himself into one of the greatest minor league players ever. Selected a "Book of the Year" by The Monitor newspaper of McAllen, Texas, this book presents the incredible story of how a young man who started life with virtually nothing became one of the greatest sports heroes of all time, overcoming the pervasive racism of the time.
