Drivers of Athletic SuccessWhat Every Athlete Needs to Know about Peak Performance
Mr. Foyle asserts that coaches have proclaimed repeatedly that sports are 80% mental. As a professional athlete, while he disagrees with that number, he agrees with the sentiment. If you are an athlete with great physical talent but do not possess proper mental skills, your game is seriously flawed. The idea is that mental skills are undervalued in sports. When experts and analysts tell us they notice that a player disappears during crunch time or they say something like, "He is an exceptional athlete overall but something is missing from his game," that something is most often a lack of mental toughness. On the other hand, an average athlete who possesses a combination of strong physical and mental skills can be outstanding and very effective on a team. Those same experts and analysts will say things like, "He is an emotionally tough kid," or "If I am going into battle, I want this player on the front lines with me." These statements reaffirm the impact that an athlete's mental skills development has on their success.Managing mental and physical skills AND emotions are key fundamentals if an athlete wants to excel in his sport. An athlete can have all the talent in the world yet if he lacks emotional intelligence and acts like a fool on the field or court, he will find himself unemployed really quickly.Harnessing one's emotions and releasing them at the appropriate time is a powerful weapon an athlete can possess in his quiver of opportunity. When people say sports is mental, what they're talking about is how an athlete controls the inevitable conflicts that arise out of athletic competition, both at the high and lower levels of sports.Any sport is a constant battle between the mental and the physical but great athletes with strong mental skills can bring these two forces into alignment. And when I say "great athlete," I don't mean an All-Star, a Hall of Famer, or the traditional definition of greatness--I mean creating a balanced athlete who can reach their full athletic potential. Sports competition by its very nature is constantly trying to take you off your game. The mental athlete must understand that leveraging physical talent and skills alone is not the correct way to approach your playing career. One must come equipped with mental fortitude as well as physical aptitude..

Coaching for the Love of the Game
More than 45 million children play youth sports in the United States each year, and most are coached by parent volunteers with good intentions but little training. This lack of training and an overemphasis on winning often results in stress and frustration for coaches and players alike, which can discourage young athletes so much that they walk away from sports altogether. With this new guide for amateur parent coaches, Jennifer Etnier, author of Bring Your 'A' Game, aims to change that. Etnier offers a system of positive coaching that can be applied to any sport, from the beginner level to high school athletics, and explains that good coaching requires working with young athletes at their developmental level and providing feedback designed to keep children engaged and having fun.Etnier gives easy-to-understand guidance on important aspects of successful coaching--including information on the development of children's motor skills, communication with a young athlete's parents, and nurturing a growth-oriented mind-set--making this a critical resource for youth coaches of all experience levels.
The Immaculate Inning
The Immaculate Inning shines a light on the miracle of baseball's endless possibility-the way that on any given day, someone (maybe a star, or maybe a scrub) could perform the rarest of single-game feats or cap off a seemingly unobtainable chase for a record. Covering a selection of the most unusual, significant, and rare feats in baseball history, both in the context of single-day (and sometimes even single-play) events and those that require a longer streak or a full season's excellence to reach or complete, the book clearly defines how each task is amassed, provides historical background, and tells riveting stories of the ballplayers that did the unthinkable.

How To Coach Youth Football
We hear the reports and see the video all too often: youth coaches and officials assaulted, fights breaking out at youth sporting events, and parents and coaches losing control over what should be a child's game. It doesn't have to be that way. What we don't see are the thousands of youth football coaches who do it the right way: teaching the game and the ethos of the game to children who love to play. Coaching youth football can be one of the most exciting, exhilarating, and rewarding experiences. It takes a tremendous amount of hard work, and an ability to communicate with other coaches, players, and parents, but there are few things to compare with watching young people compete and win, or learn lessons that will help them for a lifetime. Teaching the game of football goes far beyond the white lines, beyond the techniques of blocking and tackling. Along with learning the fundamentals of the game, young people learn teamwork, sportsmanship, responsible leadership, and the need to work hard and prepare to reach goals. To avoid being one of those trapped in a nightmare, a youth coach must master the ability to relate to both players and parents. Above all, a coach must communicate. It is important that parents trust the coach. After all, parents are submitting their child to a game that is, by its very nature, physically brutal. Parents need to trust that the coach will have the best interests of the team, and their child, in mind at all times. When those interests collide, parents need to know why a coach makes certain decisions, and how that will affect their child. Along with communicating with adults, youth football coaches must be experts in understanding and relating to children. Youth football players have very little concept of the actual fundamentals of the game. They see a college or professional game on television and see long passes, break away runs, or big hits and the thousands of people who cheer while players celebrate. This is far from the reality of the game. Coaches must be able to demonstrate and teach fundamentals. Big plays come out of the ability to be fundamentally sound, and being fundamentally sound takes hour upon hour of watching, listening, and practicing. In the NFL, and increasingly in college, success is defined by wins and losses. The bottom line is paramount. This isn't necessarily different at the youth level; the bottom line is simply wider. Wins and losses are important, and no one wants to play for a loser. But, if a youth coach is successful, they create not only wins on the field; they also help to create joy in the hearts of children and parents, players who learn how to play and how to be leaders, and, most of all, a successful youth coach gives players the building blocks to be successful in life.HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.

Late Bloomers and Early Bloomers
Have you ever heard some parent say, with pride "my kid was a late bloomer" at a sporting event? Not likely. And that's unfortunate -- research actually supports late bloomers in sport as having an edge over their early-peaking counterparts. While you might not love that other kids get faster more quickly, your child could be the one to achieve sustained success if they don't get discouraged and stop working on their game. Late Bloomers and Early Bloomers explores the intersection of sports, medicine and health as it breaks down the impact of early blooming on a youngster's body and why it really isn't what you should strive for in a student-athlete. Callum Man takes his passion for European football and pairs it with his analytical eye as he explores what the research really says about early or late developing and what you need to know about it as the parent, coach, or athlete. Learn what the best football clubs are doing to train and improve athletes. Hear some major success stories and insights about Mario Gotze, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Freddy Adu. You might be surprised about how some of the most famous names in football got to the international stage. Who knows? You might have it in you to be the next late-blooming star!

What made the book so enjoyable was that some stories brought our wonderful memories and some events that I didn't know about. It's a bit of history from a time when "Baseball" was the only sport. It was a great read. -Frank Catapano

The Best Game Ever
October 13, 1960: The hardscrabble Pirates were a hungry squad, led by Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, and a colorful bunch of overachievers who hit singles and rode solid fielding and pitching to the franchise's first World Series appearance in 35 years. The Yankees, lordly and corporate, were making their 12th trip to the World Series in 15 years and, through the managing of Casey Stengel, power hitting, and immense talent, usually found a way to win. Featuring such legends as Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Roger Maris, the Yankees had outscored the Pirates 46-16 through six games -- only to go down, 10-9, when Mazeroski became the only player ever to decide a World Series Game 7 with a walk-off home run. From extensive personal interviews with those who were there, along with newspaper, radio, and television accounts, Reisler reconstructs this fall classic pitch by pitch, from analysis of managerial tactics and the chatter of the players on the field to the lively atmosphere within the ballpark and throughout the country. The result is the feeling of being right there from the seemingly predictable start to the truly unbelievable finish of the best game ever.
Money and Football
Modern soccer is big business. From the ill-received takeover of Manchester United by the Glazer family to Paris Saint Germain's current shopping spree for the best footballers on the planet, soccer finance has become an increasingly important part of the game. Barely a summer goes by now without a cherished club going into administration or a wealthy businessman funding a mid table team's ascension to Champions League competitor. Meanwhile, the twice-annual multi-million dollar merry-go-round of transfer season sees players (and now managers) signed for sums thought impossible just a decade ago. Understanding soccer finance has become essential for comprehending the beautiful game. But for many fans, soccer finance remains, frustratingly, a world that is opaque and difficult to grasp. Stefan Szymanski, co-author of the bestselling Soccernomics, tackles every soccer fan's burning questions in Money and Soccer: A Soccernomics Guide. From the abolition of the maximum wage in the 1960s, through to the impact of TV money both at home and abroad in the 1990s and 2000s, Szymanski explains how money, or lack of, affects your favorite club. Drawing on extensive research into financial records dating back to the 1970s, Szymanski provides clear analysis of the way that clubs have transformed in the modern era. This book isn't limited to European clubs. Szymanski, a renowned expert on sports management and economics, looks at what we can learn from comparing the ascension of Europe's biggest clubs to their lofty perches and with new financial models across the world. Through careful research and informative stories drawn from around the globe, Szymanski provides an accessible guide to the world of soccer finance.
The Circuit
Winner of the 2019 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing"The Circuit is the best sports book I've read in years, maybe ever." --Rich Cohen, author of The Chicago Cubs and Monsters "As sports writing goes, The Circuit is unusual in the very best way. Rowan Ricardo Phillips writes with such fluidity, and packs the book with bursts of brilliance. This is a compulsively readable guide to one truly Homeric year of professional tennis." --John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars An energetic, lyrical, genre-defying account of the 2017 tennis season. In The Circuit: A Tennis Odyssey, the award-winning poet--and Paris Review sports columnist--Rowan Ricardo Phillips chronicles 2017 as seen through the unique prism of its pivotal, revelatory, and historic tennis season. The annual tennis schedule is a rarity in professional sports in that it encapsulates the calendar year. And like the year, it's divided into four seasons, each marked by a final tournament: the Grand Slams. Phillips charts the year from winter's Australian Open, where Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal renewed their rivalry in a match for the ages, to fall's U.S. Open. Along the way, Phillips paints a new, vibrant portrait of tennis, one that captures not only the emotions, nerves, and ruthless tactics of the point-by-point game but also the quicksilver movement of victory and defeat on the tour, placing that sense of upheaval within a broader cultural and social context. Tennis has long been thought of as an escapist spectacle: a bucolic, separate bauble of life. The Circuit will convince you that you don't leave the world behind as you watch tennis--you bring it with you.

Amos Alonzo Stagg
The arc of Amos Alonzo Stagg's life spanned the presidencies of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. His career flourished on the Chicago Midway and found an encore on California's Pacific coast and in Pennsylvania's Susquehanna Valley. During his life, Stagg witnessed great change in the world; in the sphere of collegiate sports, he was responsible for much of that change. Stagg pioneered use of the tackling dummy, the huddle, the forward pass, the shift, the man-in-motion, the quick kick and the short punt. He developed the raw talent of young men with little or no athletic background long before the age of scholarship athletes, and his championship teams at the University of Chicago established the school's national reputation before it became famous for producing Nobel laureates. He helped shape the modern Olympic Games, and the coaching tree he nurtured continues to bear fruit in football programs across the country. Author Jennifer Taylor Hall traces the remarkable life of the "Grand Old Man of Football."
Phog
Remembered in name but underappreciated in legacy, Forrest "Phog" Allen arguably influenced the game of basketball more than anyone else. In the first half of the twentieth century, Allen took basketball from a gentlemanly, indoor recreational pastime to the competitive game that would become a worldwide sport. Succeeding James Naismith as the University of Kansas's basketball coach in 1907, Allen led the Jayhawks for thirty-nine seasons and holds the record for most wins at that school, with 590. He also helped create the NCAA tournament and brought basketball to the Olympics. Allen changed the way the game is played, coached, marketed, and presented. Scott Morrow Johnson reveals Allen as a master recruiter, a transformative coach, and a visionary basketball mind. Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Wilt Chamberlain, and many others benefited from Allen's knowledge of and passion for the game. But Johnson also delves into Allen's occasionally tumultuous relationships with Naismith, the NCAA, and University of Kansas administrators. Phog: The Most Influential Man in Basketball chronicles this complex man's life, telling for the first time the full story of the man whose name is synonymous with Kansas basketball and with the game itself.
The Greatest Upset Never Seen
No one had really heard of Chaminade University--a tiny NAIA Catholic school in Honolulu with fewer than eight hundred undergraduates--until its basketball game against the University of Virginia on December 23, 1982. The Chaminade Silverswords defeated the Cavaliers, then the Division I, No. 1-ranked team in the nation, in what the Washington Post later called "the biggest upset in the history of college basketball." Virginia was the most heralded team in the country, led by seven-foot-four-inch, three-time College Basketball Player of the Year Ralph Sampson. They had just been paid $50,000--more than double Chaminade's annual basketball budget--to play an early season tournament in Tokyo and were making a "stopover" game in Hawaii on their way back to the mainland. The Silverswords, led by forward Tony Randolph, came back in the second half and won the game 77-72. Chaminade's incredible victory became known as the "Miracle on Ward Avenue" or simply "The Upset" in Hawaii and was featured in the national news. Never before in the history of college basketball had a school moved so dramatically and irretrievably into the nation's consciousness. The Silverswords' victory was more than just an upset; it was something considered impossible. And the team's wins over major college programs continued in the ensuing years. Today Chaminade is still referred to as "The Giant Killers"--the school that beat Ralph Sampson and Virginia. The Greatest Upset Never Seen relives the 1982-83 season, when Chaminade put small-college basketball and Hawaii on the national sports map.
