The Blues of Summer
The Blues of Summer is the nostalgic true story of a bygone era when baseball ruled the summers of Daniels County, Montana. The book traces how the homesteaders brought the game to northeastern Montana in the early 1900s and how Daniels County -- dubbed "Baseball Country" by the Daniels County Leader -- was always passionate about baseball. Scobey, the county seat, was a magnet for talented baseball players, including Happy Felsh and Swede Risberg from the 1919 Chicago White Sox, who played for the Scobey Giants town team in 1925. The Scobey town team became known as the Plainsmen and won two Montana state AAU and semipro championships in 1958 and 1960. But the book's heart is the story of the Scobey Blues American Legion Baseball team, which began playing in 1930 and won eight Montana state Class B Legion championships for legendary coach Clyde H. "Doc" Norman between 1969 and 1982. Author Joe Puckett, who played on four state Legion championship teams in the late 1970s, tells his baseball story and the story of the teams that came before and after his playing days.Due primarily to the dwindling population in northeastern Montana, the Scobey Blues Legion program fell into decline and ultimately folded following the 2003 season, with a brief revival attempt from 2016 to 2019. Like the Brooklyn Dodgers of Roger Kahn's The Boys of Summer, the Scobey Blues have faded away, but they will forever live in The Blues of Summer. The book, published on the 100th anniversary of the founding of American Legion Baseball -- "a program of service to the youth of America" -- is a testament to the honor and respect the author holds for its founder, The American Legion. The book was made possible by the local newspaper, the Daniels County Leader, which had closely covered the town and Legion baseball teams for over a century, providing the author with access to its archive of articles and photos.

As the owner of the Rochester Jeffersons, one of the most successful semi-pro teams in the country, he attended the league's organizational meeting in Canton, Ohio, along with George Halas, Jim Thorpe, Carl Storck, Ralph Hay and a handful of other visionaries. This book tells the story of Lyons' participation in many of the league's important historical moments as well as the many concepts he brought to the game. A pioneer in the integration of football. Lyons hired Henry McDonald, the fourth known black professional player, in 1912. Lyons' innovative "Jeffs" logo introduced in 1915 was the first used by a professional football team. He conceptualized football trading cards as a way of promoting professional football a year later. He even collaborated with representatives from the Wilson Sporting Goods Company to transform the ball from its melon shape into the one fans recognize today. This meticulously researched biography presents Lyons' struggles to keep his team afloat in the turbulent early days of the NFL, along with his encounters with such legendary figures as Walter Camp, Jim Thorpe, Curly Lambeau, George Halas, Joe Carr, Red Grange, Art Rooney, Pete Rozelle and many more. Springbok Factory
"Imagine a Springbok as a finished product coming off a factory assembly line. What are the components required? And what does it take for them to cohere into a successful team? Author Liz McGregor spent two years behind the scenes interviewing the players, coaches, wives and girlfriends, mothers and teachers. She also spoke to the Bok doctor and physio, the sponsors, brand managers and the logistics guy. And then there's the boss, the South African Rugby Union. What she discovered is as fascinating as it is complex: that parents play a crucial role, as do those early coaches and teachers who identify and nurture talent; that injury lurks behind every corner; that it takes incredible courage to go back onto the field to face another battering; and that the 'business' of the Springboks is one that is both well and poorly managed, depending where you look. By the end of her journey, McGregor had developed a deep regard for the players and many of the people who work to put the best team South Africa can offer onto the field. Nelson Mandela showed how a Springbok team can unite a nation. But there are parts of the Springbok Factory that are in urgent need of repair or, indeed, replacement. "
Touch, Pause, Engage!
South Africa is a land of contrasts, as the tourist brochures promise, and this is true for the game of rugby. From the Pretoria heartland to the aspirant Eastern Cape, from the hardscrabble Cape Flats to the islands of privilege at Bishops and Grey College. No other rugby-playing nation has to grapple with so much diversity. Different languages, classes, races and cultures - each bearing the wounds of the country's fractured past - have to be melded into winning teams. Liz McGregor has spent the past three years shadowing Currie Cup, Super 14 and Springbok teams across the country, and has come to the conclusion that it is this very diversity, combined with the pain of the past and the dreams of a great united future, that provide the elusive alchemy that separates a good team from a great one. Touch, Pause, Engage! is more than a book about rugby. It is an intimate look at how South Africa's erstwhile elite is adapting to its new circumstances. Team South Africa has been through many a maul and bruising scrum, but is inching closer and closer to the tryline.

Across eras of hardship and celebration, Portsmouth FC has remained a symbol of resilience, unity, and civic pride.More than just a football book, Pompey Till I Die is a story of identity-a tale of how one club became the soul of its city, and how that city, in turn, stood behind its club through everything.
The Final Test
'[A] compelling book... Test cricket is hanging on. It's a worry' - Graham Gooch 'Huw Turbervill is the ultimate passionate polemicist for the Test format with a zeal that manages to weave both George Orwell and Basil Fawlty into his arguments' - David Gower OBE 'As cricket expands into ever more formats and franchise leagues, more and more voices are to be heard; but the editor of The Cricketer should always be listened to' - Scyld Berry The editor of The Cricketer goes on a soul-searching journey to discover what the future holds for Test cricket. As T20 grows like Japanese knotweed, Test cricket is in mortal danger. White-ball tournaments - mainly T20 and T10 - are now sprouting in places like the US and Saudi Arabia, and Test cricketers are commonly being offered all-year-round contracts by IPL owners, allowing them to play short-form tournaments in the West Indies, the UAE and elsewhere. The IPL has expanded, but Australia's Big Bash is contracting; the 2023 men's Ashes were concertinaed into a tiny window but The Hundred continues to dominate. Is there still hope for Test cricket in this tumultuous sporting landscape? Turbervill recalls the poignancy of the final Test of the English summer at The Oval in 2022, and describes how the match could be seen as a metaphor for the demise of the longer game. As cricket fans seem divided in the sport's own version of the culture wars: traditionalists refusing to accede territory; pragmatists wanting to achieve a healthy balance and progressives conceding the change, Turbervill asks cricketers, commentators and writers about the future of Test cricket. With guest appearances including David Gower, Graham Gooch, Merv Hughes, Reece Topley and many more, this book reveals if Test cricket can truly survive the next decade.
Battles at Annapolis
Battles at Annapolis presents the context of the two most recent Army-Navy football games at the US Naval Academy, in 1893 and 1942. One game was played in peacetime before a rowdy, alcohol-fueled crowd. The second game was played in the early months of World War II before a sparse, deeply patriotic crowd. Both games would impact the service academies, the broader community, and the unique personalities who represented Army and Navy on the field, on the sidelines, and in the stands.
Coach
"At 34, Heyneke Meyer was fired as head coach of a Super Rugby team for the second time. But when, in 2007, his Bulls side became the first South African team to win the Super title, the dark years at Loftus Versfeld were suddenly forgotten. Coaches, like players, are judged on the playing field, but the scoreboard never tells the full story of how they achieved success. In Meyer's case it was an arduous journey, during which he redefined professional rugby through his leadership style. And leadership is what Coach is about - people who have fundamentally changed a sport, an industry, a way of thinking and people's lives. Marco Botha sat in conversation with some of South Africa's foremost sports leaders and interprets their diverse success stories. Brendan Venter helped turn Saracens into a top club and the Sharks into the 2013 Currie Cup champions. As an international hockey player, Sherylle Calder noticed something special about her own visual abilities and researched this together with Professor Tim Noakes. The 'Eye Lady' was instrumental in England and South Africa's victories in the Rugby World Cup, and Ernie Els bagging his second British Open golf title in 2012. Former Springbok Sevens coach Paul Treu advanced rugby sevens as a world sport by regularly getting his team to tower above seemingly superior sides. Gary Kirsten and Paddy Upton guided the Indian national cricket team to glory with a leadership style that empowered players and developed them as human beings - the 'new school' of coaching. With the same approach they helped the Proteas become the world-number-one cricket team in all three formats of the game. These remarkable leaders have made champions out of ordinary people. The reasons for their success stories will surprise you . . . "
