The Truth Zone
Four Guys, One Girl, all crammed into one four-person tent...Imagine being the first of your team to rappel off a cliff, not knowing with certainty there will be enough rope before reaching that little ledge below. Or imagine climbing Mt. Shasta in winter only 1,500 feet from the summit when your crampon breaks. There are 15 Peaks in California above 14,000 feet elevation, known as "The California 14ers," some of them more technical than others, but they all offer up challenges. This book offers a glimpse of what it is like to climb these majestic mountains. It is not surprising to anyone that has seen the awe-inspiring view from a mountain summit that the wonder of nature is experienced as a primal, spiritual feeling. Knife-like ridges, and peaks with naked summits while their bases are blanketed in ice and glaciers, instill a sense of wonderment. Sometimes the summit leaves you speechless as you soak it all in. Prayers of gratitude for this beautiful view and thanks for a successful climb are common. Those moments before you reach the summit are another story. Slogging away at altitude, step by exhausting step, you move yourself forward by any means possible. Your brain gets a little foggy, and sometimes you blurt out whatever is on your mind. Fortunately anything you say above 13,000 feet doesn't count against you. We learned that in the winter of 2008, a thousand vertical feet from the summit of Mt. Shasta, when Deborah promised Adrian that he would never again have to take her up another mountain if she could just make it to the top. There is something about reaching that mark that tends to make mountaineers spill their guts. For the most part, it was pretty entertaining as people disclosed secret crushes, hopes, erotic dreams, and private disappointment. At this altitude and often on exposed, airy ledges, we discovered the real truth: that not only did we have to count on each other, but that we actually could count on each other. This is why we call it The Truth Zone.

A Guide to the Big Game Hunt of Your Dreams,
This book is written for you, the one who dreams of bigger adventures. I hope to inspire you with my stories and motivate you to have the will and discipline to achieve your dreams. I want to give you the tools that will help make your experience enjoyable and successful. I wish nothing more than for others to experience the same adventures and opportunities that have become vivid memories in my head. Going on my first hunt, I expected a few days of hunting and a trophy picture; what I got was a new perspective on life, spirituality and the love of the entire process. This book is full of hunting stories, misadventures and mistakes. I then give you step by step procedures to plan, book and be successful on a hunt. The lessons learned are laid out so that you can easily go back to find them the moment you need them. I want others to reap the benefits of what I learned, making their own experience mind-blowing.Along my journey, I learned booking a hunt can be a little overwhelming yet very rewarding. I never thought I could afford to hunt like this, but changing my attitude was all I needed to start saving toward my goal. As I hunted, I noticed others not enjoying themselves as much as they should, and my approach seemed to bring me more success. There is a significant investment in time and money, so it was important for me to do everything possible to do it right. In that process I learned a lot, and all of this snowballed into the idea that if I wrote a book, I could help fulfill the dreams of other hunters. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys hunting, reads countless hunting stories and is glued to hunting shows. It should inspire you to pursue that dream. It will step you through the process helping you get the most out of an adventure. It will create a mindset where you will feel successful the day you leave on the trip. It forces you to be honest with your goals, yourself and your vision of success and eliminates disappointment. It can and will change your life. No matter how good you are, the written word, the video or the picture cannot ever convey the sights, smells and adrenaline rushed thrills of doing it yourself. Once you enter the world of hunting, you will surely know what I mean. This book will help you get the most out of every second of the journey. My stories are nothing more than the memories and passion that resides in my head and I want everyone to experience that. Each hunter in your family needs a copy of this book. Every 10-year-old girl or boy should read it, so they can decide if they want to pursue this noble and rewarding sport. Non-hunting spouses and family members can get a feel for why we love it. An anti-hunter might just get a glimpse of what the hunting culture is all about.I hope it changes your life. It changed mine and the experience made me a better person!

Sporting Realities
Despite the increasing number of popular and celebrated sports documentaries in contemporary culture, such as ESPN's 30 for 30 series, there has been little scholarly engagement with this genre. Sports documentaries, like all films, do not merely showcase objective reality but rather construct specific versions of sporting culture that serve distinct economic, industrial, institutional, historical, and sociopolitical ends ripe for criticism, contextualization, and exploration. Sporting Realities brings together a diverse group of scholars to probe the sports documentary's cultural meanings, aesthetic practices, industrial and commercial dimensions, and political contours across historical, social, medium-specific, and geographic contexts. It considers and critiques the sports documentary's visible and powerful position in contemporary culture and forges novel connections between the study of nonfiction media and sport.
Casting Forward

Between Each Step
Shedding years of societal conditioning that dictates school, work and life, Patrice and Justin La Vigne do their best to maintain a nomadic whimsy. However, this nontraditional life presents just as many moments of joy and grace as moments of stress and hardship. It's in the rawness of long-distance hiking that the couple builds confidence to continue their "life less ordinary."In 2014-15, Patrice and Justin opted for the human-powered route to explore New Zealand. For four months, they tramped along Te Araroa, a continuous trail gaining notoriety stretching roughly 2,000 miles from Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island to Bluff at the bottom of the South Island. The adventure would either strengthen their bond to each other and their commitment to a nontraditional life, or it would break them apart. This travel memoir powerfully captures the essence of trail life, New Zealand's unique culture and the tradeoffs to an off-the-beaten path trajectory. Told with suspense, style and humor, backpackers and armchair adventurers alike will learn that this newly created trail in an exotic locale is sometimes zany, but the healthy vulnerability to its rugged nature rewards self-awareness and growth. Readers will feel the pain of every blister, experience the fear of life-threatening tides and be blown away by the hospitality of the Kiwi people, all at the same time.

Crammed full of rare images and little-known anecdotes, it recounts how sport at IU developed from its very first baseball team, made up mostly of local Bloomington townsfolks, to the rich and powerful tradition that is the "Hoosier" legacy. Learn about the fatal train collision that nearly stopped IU athletics in its tracks; IU's first African American football player; the infamous Baseball Riot of 1913; how a horde of students grabbed axes and chopped down 200 apple trees to make way for a new gymnasium; and the legendary 1910 football team that didn't allow a single touchdown all season--but still lost a game. Most importantly, it attempts to answer the burning question, where did the "Hoosiers" get their mysterious name?

The Natural Navigator, Tenth Anniversary Edition
Before GPS, before the compass, and even before cartography, humankind was navigating. A windswept tree, the depth of a puddle, or a trill of birdsong could point the way home, and they still do--if you know how to look. With The Natural Navigator, his first book, Tristan Gooley invited us to notice the directional clues hidden all around: in the sun, moon, stars, clouds, weather patterns, lengthening shadows, changing tides, growing plants, and habits of wildlife. A decade after publication, this modern classic still reminds us that we can find south by joining the horns of the crescent moon--and find adventure in our own backyards.
Professional Basketball in 1939-40
Professional Basketball in 1939-40: On the Cusp of Depression and WarBy: John Hogrogian Professional basketball began its modern history in 1946, when the postwar economy put money in the hands of working people. Basketball promoters were invested in the professional game as a new winter spectator sport. Only after 1960 did the sport begin to achieve the big-time status that it now enjoys. The postwar sport was built on an ill-funded, unglamorous industry that survived through the hard times of the Great Depression. There is little historical treatment of that earlier game. Pro Basketball in 1939-40 takes a detailed view of one season, as the Depression ground on. World War II, however, had started in Europe and would soon change everything about pro basketball in the United States. About the AuthorJohn Hogrogian is an attorney living in Brooklyn, NY. He is retired from a career as a lawyer for the New York City government. For most of his life, he has played baseball, football, and basketball for fun, if not very well. For most of his adult life, John has done historical research into those three sports in their pre-World War II days. He finds it a great thrill, a kind of time travel.

Mr. America
For most of the twentieth century, the "Mr. America" image epitomized muscular manhood. From humble beginnings in 1939 at a small gym in Schenectady, New York, the Mr. America Contest became the world's premier bodybuilding event over the next thirty years. Rooted in ancient Greek virtues of health, fitness, beauty, and athleticism, it showcased some of the finest specimens of American masculinity. Interviewing nearly one hundred major figures in the physical culture movement (including twenty-five Mr. Americas) and incorporating copious printed and manuscript sources, John D. Fair has created the definitive study of this iconic phenomenon. Revealing the ways in which the contest provided a model of functional and fit manhood, Mr. America captures the event's path to idealism and its slow descent into obscurity. As the 1960s marked a turbulent transition in American society-from the civil rights movement to the rise of feminism and increasing acceptance of homosexuality-Mr. America changed as well. Exploring the influence of other bodily displays, such as the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia contests and the Miss America Pageant, Fair focuses on commercialism, size obsession, and drugs that corrupted the competition's original intent. Accessible and engaging, Mr. America is a compelling portrayal of the glory days of American muscle.
Turkey Tails and Tales from Across the USA
This book is a collection of stories written by one of America's most traveled and experienced turkey hunters; a man who has taken multiple toms from 49 states. Such a feat didn't come easily, so you might expect these pages to fairly drip with wise words of wisdom and sage advice on how to hunt those wily, elusive birds...and they do. However, "Doc" Weddle didn't write an instruction manual. Instead, he takes the reader on a trip down memory lane to recall exciting hunts which helped shape him into becoming the true "Turkey Man" that he is today. Novice or veteran readers alike will undoubtedly gain valuable knowledge here, but the author is first and foremost a storyteller, and he has written this book simply to entertain his audience in a manner reminiscent of outdoorsmen standing around campfires and sharing the colorful details of their hunts with cohorts and companions. The tales told between these covers will propel the reader across every geological region of the United States; from the hot, humid, jungle habitat of southern Florida, to the arid, cactus-laden plains of the desert southwest, and right on up into the snow-capped mountain states...plus, nearly everywhere else, in between! Whether Doc is chasing after the Rio Grande, Osceola, Eastern, or Merriam's subspecies, these accounts are bound to strike a chord with fellow turkey hunters, for they come straight from the heart of a man who has literally designed a life around hunting turkeys all spring long, and wherever he chooses to go. Additionally, there is an element of awe factor involved here, since just about every one of these tales take place on public lands. Few people would be willing to endure the hardships inherent in following such a difficult path, but our author prides himself on persevering through adverse conditions, and excelling in tough environments where others tread lightly, if at all. The reality is that he's been doing this very thing for over three decades, and never returns home without new and exciting stories to tell. His cooler usually contains fresh turkey meat, as well. These accounts of pursuing the "poor man's big game" are filled with all the joys and jubilations that come from a remarkable lifetime spent afield, but they're also spiced with the problems and occasional heartbreaks which inevitably occur during any difficult quest pursued. Exciting and fascinating encounters with wildlife (both animal, and human) seem to be a regular occurrence on the long and winding path of Doc's travels, and anyone who shares his same passions for early morning sunrises spent communicating with America's Grandest Gamebird is bound to enjoy reading this book.
Jewish Sports Legends
Following the 1972 Olympics one sportswriter referred to Mark Spitz, winner of seven gold medals, as "the first great Jewish athlete." He couldn't have been more wrong. As Jewish Sports Legends shows, Jews have excelled at athletics for centuries. This engaging volume illuminates the lives and unforgettable accomplishments of Jews in virtually every major sport played worldwide. Baseball stars Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg, basketball's Red Auerbach and Dolph Schayes, and football's Sid Luckman and Marv Levy are only a few notable examples. With photographs accompanying almost every sports personality, this fifth edition introduces some famous and some not-so-famous Jewish sports greats throughout history. More than eighty new entries have been added to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame since 2005, among them Lyle Alzado, Max Baer, Ira Berkow, Kenny Bernstein, Sasha Cohen, Shawn Green, Donna Geils Orender, Aly Raisman, and Bud Selig. While most of those profiled are professional sport champions and Olympic gold medalists, the book also features great coaches, officials, journalists, and other significant contributors in every major sport.
K2, the Savage Mountain
The 1953 American expedition to the second highest peak in the world.
Turkey Tails and Tales from Across the USA
This is the second book in a series of turkey hunting recollections written by Tom "Doc" Weddle. It details not only the excitement and thrills generated during his annual 12-week trek across America chasing after this greatest of gamebirds, but also many of the trials and tribulations suffered along the way. The author's first volume took his readers along for the ride as he learned the turkey hunting game from 1983-1993, and this one covers the years 1994-2000. Alternating chapters expound upon themes which he just feels like talking about. Weddle is one of the country's most traveled turkey hunters, so his stories and opinions will undoubtedly be of interest to anyone sharing in his springtime passions. Although the book wasn't designed as an instruction manual, there's a wealth of knowledge contained within its storytelling pages. Furthermore, the author's conversational style of writing makes for easy, enjoyable reading. Since 1983, Doc Weddle's single-minded compulsion for turkey hunting has led him to every state which holds a spring season. Alaska is the only one that doesn't. No other hunter in America has killed at least two birds in every one of these states, and yet Weddle is now only five states away from having accomplished this amazing feat four times. What's more, he can boast of having taken toms on public land in every state except North Dakota, which doesn't allow non-residents that opportunity. Obviously, this is a man who loves turkey hunting more than just about anything else in the world. A book written by him comes from a rather unique perspective, and as more and more hunters across America seek to complete their own coveted U.S. Super Slam, they will undoubtedly find his experiences, tips, and advice of great value. Turkey hunters throughout the ages have always enjoyed sharing tales of their maddening encounters with an adversary so adept at making them look inept, and Weddle is a good storyteller who clearly reveres and honors this noble bird. He's also an astute student of the turkey hunting game and its traditions, and his writings reflect the same sort of values and desire to do things the "right" way as steered the old-time "Turkey Men" of the past. Those fellows fully understood how consistently losing to a bird-brained opponent was a perfectly acceptable outcome, and Doc Weddle gets that, as well. After all, success in this sport can't be measured by the number of dead birds to a man's credit. Rather; it's the very difficulties encountered along the way! Reading Doc's books will help you to understand all of that...and give you a glimpse of the inner drive which defines folks like him.
Golden Years, Golden Hours
Golden Years, Golden Hours is Paul Vang's second book, following Sweeter than Candy: a Hunter's Journal, writing about his passion for the outdoors, especially fly-fishing, upland bird hunting, and Labrador retrievers. In this new book, the author takes the reader through the seasons of the year, some of the many places where he has cast a fly or lure for trout, salmon, bass and muskies, and some of the people he's met along the way. He also shares his treasured memories of many hunting outings with a beloved Labrador retriever and the inevitable sorrow of saying farewell. The author also muses on the process of aging, relishing that he's able to continue an active outdoor lifestyle, while also recognizing, without being maudlin about it, that he has a lot more seasons behind him than ahead of him, even if he doesn't think he's ready to be a Senior Citizen.
Shadows of Greatness
"A dear friend gave me one of Andy's books and I was captivated by the stories of the lives and contributions of people in sports that I already admired as well as some I did not know. To say that Andy is a master storyteller is an understatement, as everything I have read by Andy since then has been just as interesting, fun to read, entertaining and informative as that first book. Thanks for the literary contributions Andy. If it's by you, I'm certain it's going to be a great read." Kent Hill, 1st round pick by the Los Angeles Rams. Offensive Guard 1979-1987

Sport and Protest
Sporting mega-events habitually spawn protests from local groups discommoded by the building of new infrastructure, environmental lobbies contesting the long-term legacies of such events, and expressions of outrage at the expenditure of public funds on events often restricted to an elite selection of participants and spectators. Are these protest movements ever successful in preventing sporting events from taking place or in modifying their nature, or even in drawing attention to social issues? Or are they inevitably destined to be ignored in the popular fervour and financial windfall that accompanies such events? Similarly, sporting events have occasionally been the site of iconic moments of political protest. Tommie Smith's and John Carlos' 'Black Power' salute at the Mexico Olympics in 1968, for example, remains one of the abiding symbols of resistance to oppression expressed in a sporting context. What is it about sport that lends itself to these kinds of protests? Are these protests effective in accelerating change in society or does the sporting context ultimately serve to trivialize important social issues? Here we endeavour to respond to some of these questions and thereby illuminate the evolving political, economic, environmental and cultural implications of sport in society. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue in The International Journal of The History of Sport.
Rather; it's in the very difficulties encountered, and in how those shape him! Reading Doc's books will help you to understand all of that...and give you a glimpse of the inner drive which defines folks like him.
