Making Classic Toys That Teach
The Froebel Gifts are perhaps the world's first educational toys. Developed in the early 1800's by Friedrich Froebel, inventor of Kindergarten, the Gifts appear deceptively simple but represent a sophisticated approach to child development. Over the last 180 years these intricately conceived playthings have had a widespread impact, becoming interwoven with the history of art/design, popular culture, and education. Inspiring and informing the work of Maria Montessori, Rudolf Steiner, and others, Froebel's Gifts influenced Frank Lloyd Wright, Albert Einstein, Kandinsky, Klee, and more while Mattel used them in designing Tinker Toys, Color Cubes, and Unit Blocks. In Making Classic Toys That Teach, Doug Stowe, a professional woodworker and teacher, presents the history and valuable benefits of each gift while providing step-by-step instruction on how to build each toy and the box to hold them. Each of the 10 Froebel Gifts are featured: 1) balls of yarn, introducing color, shape and motion; 2) sphere, cylinder, and cubes on a hanging device; 3) divided cube building blocks; 4) rectangular blocks; 5) wooden cubes and triangular blocks; 6) geometric building blocks in various shapes; 7) colorful geometric shapes; 8) sticks and rings; 9) points - small colorful objects, like beads - that can be connected to create dotted lines, etc; 10) framework in the form of fiddlesticks or tinker toys. As the backlash towards our overly technological world increases, the philosophy of Froebel and an understanding of the value of his Gifts is part of the trend of more focused playtime and creative thinking for younger children that will help them make connections on their own regarding the world around them.

Glamoury
Glamoury is a system of beauty based upon the four elements. In Glamoury, the letters in your name correspond to a number. The pattern of sound these numbers make is your frequency. When you match your personal frequency to the colors, shapes, and textures of your element, the most beautiful things about you show. The way Glamoury works is similar to how an opera singer can shatter a glass by singing a note equal to the frequency of the glass. By wearing your element's colors and styles, you are matching its frequency to you. This raises your vibration to a higher level, allowing the beauty within you to radiate outward.A Note From The AuthorMy inspiration to create Glamoury started two decades ago. It came from a vision during a ten-day meditation. I saw Glamoury as a cosmic stream that emanated from a goddess on the blue star of Sirius. This stream then reached earth by nine Glamours whom each spoke a piece of her celestial wisdom. I realized these Glamours had been known throughout time by different names. In Egypt, they were the Ennead. In India, they were called the Navadurgas, and in ancient Greece, the Muses. By any name, the Glamours are agents of change who bring about transformation by revealing the beauty within.
Latvian Weaving Techniques
This is a book about weaving techniques. The reader will notice that throughout the book references are made to Latvian examples where certain techniques apply. The reason for this is that both my parents are Latvian and my mother, Anna Apinis, is a weaver who studied in Latvia graduating from the Latvian State High School for Applied Art at Liepāja in 1933. After the Second World War she immigrated to Australia in 1950, bringing her knowledge of weaving and weaving loom with her. In this book I want to document some of the wealth of information collected during my mother's years in Latvia and add what knowledge of weaving I have gained from the Melbourne College of Textiles, where I attended a course in hand loom weaving between 1984 and 1986. The aim of the book is to present as many Latvian designs as possible using between four and eight shafts. A short but important chapter is devoted to the drawloom technique, which enables the weaver to easily manipulate up to seventeen shafts. Anna Apinis brought the drawloom shown in this book with her when she came to Australia. It was built in Germany just after the war from wood found in the war-torn airforce barracks of the displaced persons camp, Memmingen, where she resided until the move to Australia. Basic definitions of loom parts and weaving equipment are included with a short description of drafting, which forms the groundwork for putting theory into practice.

Mosaic Knitting Workshop
Mosaic knitting is a quick-to-learn technique that will enable you to make beautiful, colourful knitted projects in no time. This collection of techniques and knitting patterns for mosaic knitted homewares and accessories, includes everything you need to get started with this exciting technique. Unlike other knitting colourwork techniques, mosaic knitting is beginner-friendly - if you can knit, purl and slip a stitch you can make these projects. The patterns in this collection avoid any complicated shaping and are knitted flat to keep them as accessible and beginner friendly as possible. Mosaic knitting patterns are essentially knitting stripes and slipping stitches in a pattern to creating striking geometric motifs. With mosaic knitting you only work one colour per row, so you don't have to worry about carrying floats of yarn like you do with stranded colourwork techniques. Readers are led through the basics with step-by-step instructions and diagrams so that they can master the techniques before trying out their skills on 15 different projects. All of the patterns are accompanied with charts and there are instructions for how to follow the mosaic knitting charts, as well as how to read the written patterns, how to work in stockinette (stocking) stitch and how to carry yarn up the side of your work. There are step-by-step photographs showing how to work the stitches, as well as advice about choosing and changing colours. Each of the projects has an ability rating so you can build your skills on the easiest patterns before moving on to more challenging, but still accessible, projects. This collection includes 15 projects with stunning geometric designs including wraps, shawls and cowls as well as blankets, throws and pillow covers. For each of the projects author, Ashleigh Wempe, has designed an alternative colourway so you can see an example of how different colour combinations work for each of the designs. Mosaic knitting, is a technique that creates beautiful colourwork but is less complicated than other knitting colourwork techniques, it also creates a softer fabric than stranded knitting and the finished knitted fabric maintains its stretchiness making it soft and flexible.
The Hooktionary
Create bold, modern and fun tapestry crochet designs with this unique crochet stitch dictionary! One of the most important tools in any crocheter's toolbox is a stitch dictionary - an essential reference packed with possibilities. The Hooktionary is the first and only crochet stitch dictionary to feature tapestry crochet motifs. And it has personality to boot! From unicorns and bumblebees to bold, graphic designs, the 150 motifs this book includes are perfect for the modern maker. Plus, five 'choose your own adventure' projects allow you to mix and match motifs into one-of-a-kind designs that reflect your own tastes. Inspired by Andrea Rangel's Alterknit Stitch Dictionary, Brenda K.B. Anderson has created a crochet counterpart so that crocheters can join in the fun too. Unlike other tapestry crochet pattern collections, which focus on single crochet stitches - creating slanted color patterns which do not create clean lines - Anderson has used her experience of which kinds of crochet stitches pair well with tapestry crochet to create beautiful, clear patterns, and wearable fabrics. Swatches are made in one of five different crochet stitch patterns: single crochet through the back loop, center (or split) single crochet, extended single crochet, center (or split) extended single crochet, and front post double crochet, with information about how the crochet stitch anatomy affects both the drape and feel of the fabric and also the look of the charted image, so that you can imagine how a chart would look in another stitch pattern. All the designs are crocheted in the round, so that you can keep the front of the work facing you, and then steeked - a technique that has not been covered in any other crochet book! There is also comprehensive advice on choosing stitches and fixing mistakes.

Modern Furniture in Canada
Canada's furniture history includes hitherto unrecognized work of international significance in modern design. In this richly illustrated study, Virginia Wright brings such accomplishments to the fore, employing archival photographs and original documentation to trace the development of professional furniture design, design education, and design advocacy in Canada from 1920 to 1970.Chief among the milestones were the production in Ontario in the mid-1920s of moulded plywood seating for assembly halls, and the world's first moulded plastic furniture produced in prototype by the National Research Council in 1946 - three years before the more famous designs by Charles Eames in the United States.Within a narrative framework, Wright charts the development of modern design from its first appearance in an Eaton's department store, with pieces brought from the Paris Exposition of 1925, through its stealthy entry into Canadian homes, to its establishment as a dominant style. She shows how the introduction of modern industrial materials such as steel tube, rubber, and plywood into the production of commercial and institutional furnishings, and their incorporation into modern decor, reached a wide public through exhibitions and the media. Wright also reveals the relative neglect of this facet of Canada's art history by its museums and galleries, which, after featuring new furniture made in Canada, failed to acquire any for their own permanent exhibitions or study collections. The first account of Canada's innovative furniture design and fabrication of the period, Modern Furniture in Canada, 1920 to 1970 opens the door to a whole new field of study.
