Practical Carriage and Wagon Painting
In many of its elementary principles the art of carriage and wagon painting as at present exemplified does not materially differ from the art as it was interpreted in the remote past. Processes and systems have changed and adapted themselves to the swifter modes of life, but not a few of the paint materials, especially those used in the foundation and surfacing coats, remain practically the same as used in former times. The P. W. F.'s, as surfacing agents expected to take the place of white lead and oil and their assistant pigments, tossed merrily upon the topmost wave of favor for a brief period some two decades ago, but the fiat of their decline went forth and at the present time the great majority of carriage and wagon paintersstill adhere to white lead, raw linseed oil, ochres, and regulation roughstuff pigments for their foundation materials, as did their instructors andpredecessors.
Kentucky Timber Toys
Years ago, we started in a two-car garage with benchtop tools, and on Saturday mornings my 5-year-old son and I would create and build a toy for him to play with. The toy would last a short while and we would redesign and build a newer version each week until the toy survived playtime. Our experiences in designing and building sturdy toys led us to the tag line of timber rough, timber tough, truly describing the toys themselves. The toys in this book are designed for the beginning to intermediate woodworker in mind, and they are all "weekend" projects. If you spend a few hours on Saturday and a few hours on Sunday, you and your child can complete a toy together. They are laid out, from the onset, to build on your skill set and confidence by starting with simple toy builds and ending up with more and more challenging toys as your child grows older and your skill set grows with them. They are designed for the rugged at heart. All of the toys are designed without any metal fasteners. All parts are either pined, jointed or a non - toxic adhesive is used to assemble the toys together. When we started this project, we were looking for ways to give back to the community in which we live and decided that, with a particular focus on children, we would go down the path of toy design and donation. All the proceeds from the book are being donated to The Home of the Innocents (Louisville Kentucky) and St Jude's Children's Cancer Research Hospital. We believe that this is the start of more good things to come and hope to build upon this book and expand our abilities to help others and their children. I hope that you will join us in this effort.

Balloon Masterpieces
One of the first questions a bystander might ask a balloon artist is "Are they special balloons?" The answer is "Yes and no." Most balloons used for sculpting are made out of a type of rubber called latex. The quality of the latex may vary between manufacturers, but basically all latex balloons have the same stretching and twisting properties. Though sculpting balloons are made of similar material, they are not all shaped the same.Different balloons are designed to expand to specific shapes and sizes when they are inflated. Some will be big and round; others will be small and round. Some will be long and skinny or short and fat. There is a variety of unusual, specific-shaped balloons that include hearts, bear heads, bee bodies, flowers, donuts, spirals, and caterpillars. There are even balloons that are designed to link end to end for various purposes and many that are produced with printed images or patterns. With so many styles of balloons available, it is important to know that it is the shape and size of the balloon, more than any other factor, that will dictate what you can do with it once you begin twisting.The long, skinny balloons known as animal, twisty, or pencil balloons are those designed specifically for sculpting; they come in various sizes depending on your creative needs. They are officially named with numbers that describe their width and length after they are inflated. The most commonly used balloon is the 260. The "2" refers to the width, which is approximately two inches in diameter, and the "60" refers to the length, which is approximately sixty inches, end to end. Most of the designs in this book require 260s, unless otherwise stated. In many cases, the 260 can be substituted with balloons of varying widths and lengths to create the same designs in smaller or larger scale.

Latvian Weaving Techniques
This is a book about weaving techniques. The reader will notice that throughout the book references are made to Latvian examples where certain techniques apply. The reason for this is that both my parents are Latvian and my mother, Anna Apinis, is a weaver who studied in Latvia graduating from the Latvian State High School for Applied Art at Liepāja in 1933. After the Second World War she immigrated to Australia in 1950, bringing her knowledge of weaving and weaving loom with her. In this book I want to document some of the wealth of information collected during my mother's years in Latvia and add what knowledge of weaving I have gained from the Melbourne College of Textiles, where I attended a course in hand loom weaving between 1984 and 1986. The aim of the book is to present as many Latvian designs as possible using between four and eight shafts. A short but important chapter is devoted to the drawloom technique, which enables the weaver to easily manipulate up to seventeen shafts. Anna Apinis brought the drawloom shown in this book with her when she came to Australia. It was built in Germany just after the war from wood found in the war-torn airforce barracks of the displaced persons camp, Memmingen, where she resided until the move to Australia. Basic definitions of loom parts and weaving equipment are included with a short description of drafting, which forms the groundwork for putting theory into practice.
