Ancient Chinese Arts
Dream of the Red Chamber is one of China's four great classical novels. Although the plot centers around a love story involving Jia Baoyu, the carefree adolescent male heir of the family, and his two girl-cousins, the theme of the novel is actually about the rise and fall of the Jia clan, which is a microcosm of the late Chinese feudal society. Dream of the Red Chamber describes in detail the daily reality of the Rongguo House and the Ningguo House who reside in two large, adjacent family compounds in the capital. Their ancestors were made Dukes and given imperial titles. The two houses are among the most illustrious families in the city. One of the clan's offspring is made a Royal Consort, and the lush landscaped Grand View Garden is built to receive her visit. The novel describes the Jia clan's wealth and influence in great naturalistic detail. Eventually the Jia clan falls into disfavor with the Emperor, and their mansions are raided and confiscated. Written just before the onset of China's 19th-century decline, Dream of the Red Chamber presents a rich social tapestry and a pervading philosophical theme. The pages of the novel make up a veritable encyclopedia of Chinese life, from the making of tea with last year's melted snow, to the eating of crabs, the performing of lyrical opera, and the writing of classical verse in every possible detail. To offset the large cast of upper-class characters, there is also a wonderful assortment of low-life personalities, old village dames, garrulous matrons, drunken retainers, martial artists, sing-song girls, and theatrical performers. The novel touches on the lives of over 400 characters and depicts the variety of human nature. This album contains a collection of paintings made by Huang Shanshou, a well-known Chinese artist during the late Qing Dynasty. These paintings cover a wide range of subjects ranging from scenes, figures to events in the novel Dream of the Red Chamber.
A Collector's Guide to the Colt Root Sidehammer
The Colt Root Sidehammer is a small caliber revolver that appeared fairly early in the history of Colt firearms. They were the second least manufactured revolver in the Colt lineup. They were not a popular model. They certainly are not up there with the other percussion Colts, the Single Action Armies, the double actions, or the fine automatics that Colt has manufactured. It seemed that nobody wanted them which drew me to them and resulted in the 20 year search to put this particular collection together with the help of my wife and brother.

Ordnance Maintenance
Every American soldier, airman, seaman and auxiliary personnel in WWII wore a wristwatch or carried a pocket watch. For military operations, reliability and accuracy in timekeeping has always been paramount, and in WWII the need for both became undeniable: the pace of modern war made highly synchronized operations the rule rather than the exception. In order to meet these requirements, a whole new generation of timepieces were issued. Innovative new models featured a host of improvements, from second-hacking capabilities to improved waterproofing, more durable and accurate movements, and purpose-driven complications. No wonder that many of today's modern brands market "classic" WWII watches as a key part of their product lines. The job of keeping America's WWII military timepieces in good condition fell to a group of specially-trained military watchmakers. This book, which was originally published in 1945 by the War Department, was the standard issues training manual for this cadre. It contains detailed instructions for the inspection, disassembly, assembly, maintenance, and repair of military issue pocket watches, wrist watches, stop watches, and message center clocks. Some of the specific models featured include the Bulova wristwatch model 10 AK, the Waltham wrist watch models 10609 and 10617, Elgin pocket and wrist watches, the Hamilton pocket watch model 992B, various Elgin stopwatches and the Message Center Clock M1. Originally "restricted", this manual was declassified long ago and is reprinted here in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the original text and photographs.

The Queen and the Arts
A superb narrative history of Her Majesty The Queen's lifelong appreciation of the arts. Ideal for readers of Jane Roberts, Christopher Lloyd and Desmond Shawe-Taylor. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II acquired a cultivated appreciation of the arts from an early age, with the study of a picture a week in her schooldays, and in maturity has consistently proven herself a dutiful, conscientious and enthusiastic patron of the arts. In this impressive volume, Helen Cathcart guides the reader through the public galleries, state apartments and private rooms of royal abodes, pointing out the historic furniture and bespoke ceramics, the royal portraits and of course the Old Masters that adorn the tapestried walls. Here is the pencil sketch by Michelangelo, the watercolour by Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the first edition Lewis Carroll in the Royal Library, and the Faberg矇 easter eggs, among many other treasures. The Queen and the Arts not only highlights Her Majesty's abiding interest in the arts in all its forms but also her expert knowledge and care of the royal collection and her wish for it to be seen and enjoyed by as many as possible. Praise for Helen Cathcart: 'An expert on royalty' - The Guardian'Wide acclaim as a royal biographer ... objective, uninhibited and penetrating' - Sunday Express'Helen Cathcart writes about royalty as if she were one of them' - Daily Mail'The doyenne of royal biographers' - Daily Telegraph
Collinson & Lock
Victorian furnishers and decorators Collinson & Lock were a model of the art furniture business of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This book is the first wide-ranging study of this once highly important company. It will give insights into the workings and productions of a London furnishing business in the period. It also provides information on a wide variety of topics including furniture design developments, interior design styles, business practices, working practices and techniques, and the firm's customers and competitors.Clive Edwards first considers the structure of the London 'art furniture' trade and its development to locate the firm in its community. He then traces the growth of the firm's business, its involvement with important international exhibitions, the designers they worked with, and the furniture and interiors they produced. This important book then outlines and discusses Collinson & Lock's creations ranging from seminal pieces that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed at national and international exhibitions between 1871 and 1900, through to batch produced objects that still maintained the quality and design that the firm was famous for. The involvement of the firm with both public and private interior decoration commissions is also examined through case studies, including those in the Anglo-Japanese, Queen Anne, Old English, and Renaissance styles used in the later Victorian period.Drawing on the author's extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century furniture and interiors, this book meets a need for a fully researched and illustrated reference work on this famous firm. If you have an interest in the history of furniture and interior design, if you are involved with furniture collections either on a private basis or professionally, or you simply have an interest in the decorative arts and culture of the period, this book should be on your shelves.

Jewelry (Latest Edition)
Two Legendary Artists in One Spectacular Visual CollectionTony Duquette thrilled his famous clients and tantalized collectors with extravagant, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. Hutton Wilkinson, Duquette's longtime business partner, friend, and prot矇g矇, followed right in Tony's footsteps and also blazed his own path in spectacular style. Together, the two designers literally dazzled the world. Jewelry features a magnificent photographic collection of works by both artists, paired with delightfully descriptive prose by Wilkinson. Duquette epitomized the tradition of "more is more," a legacy look that Wilkinson has fully embraced and continued. Fittingly then, many of the pieces featured-including one-of-a-kind necklaces, brooches, bracelets, earrings, rings and more-are big, bold, and beautiful. As Glenda Bailey, editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar, writes in the book's introduction, "Hutton has such an amazing imagination that everything he touches blossoms, quite literally in the case of his jewelry; necklaces grow sapphire leaves, with rays of sunlight glinting through in the form of citrines set in gold rays, brooches spread diamond-studded branches; and coral curls delicately into diamond earrings."The lavish photographs by Stephanie Hanchett, many of which were taken in the gardens of Duquette's fabled Beverly Hills estate, Dawnridge, highlight the mesmerizing appeal of the gems and stones. Readers of this gem of a book will enjoy exploring the artistry exhibited on these pages rich in color and detail.

The Athenian Decadrachm
The first monograph in over 35 years in any language to study the coinage of classical Athens. It collects for the first time the evidence for the largest denomination ever produced by the Athenian state, the ten-drachma piece, and situates the coinage within its social, political and economic background. This book represents a huge advance on the previous study of the material, Chester Starr's Athenian coinage, 480-449 B.C. (Oxford, 1970). Fischer-Bossert has collected more than three times as many specimens as were known to Starr, and has provided a full account of the known forgeries drawn from the photo-files of major dealers, scholars and museums. A die-study of forty genuine Athenian decadrachms in public and private collections is provided, together with a catalogue of more than ninety modern forgeries. Almost all are illustrated. This will be an indispensable work for all interested in the coinage and history of 5th-century Athens. In addition, its judicious discussion of the history of the forgery of these remarkable coins will make this volume a handbook for all serious collectors of ancient Greek coinage.

Medallic Art of the American Numismatic Society, 1865-2014
During the past 150 years, the American Numismatic Society has been a leader in the publication of art medals in the United States. Generally employing the finest medalists available, the Society has set an example few can match. In addition, with the exception of the United States Mint, no U.S. entity can boast so long and distinguished a contribution in this area. Founded in 1858, the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society, as it was known from 1864-1907, believed the issuance of medals to be a part of its mission from the earliest years of its existence.Author Scott H. Miller includes 60 medals issued by the ANS between 1865 and 2014 along with two COAC medals and the 1910 Actors' Fund Medal, all accompanied by color photographs. Many entries are supplemented by artist's sketches and archival photographs as well as the stories behind each issue. Four appendixes include recipients of some of these medals as well as the list of dies, hubs, galvanos, and casts of ANS medals in the ANS's own collection.

Coin Collecting

Thankfully, we live in times in which anyone with an interest and a willingness to learn can get started with coin collecting, and showing you how to do that is what this book is all about.Although a lot of people don't pay that much attention to coins aside from seeing them as change which they use to pay for things, you can learn a lot by looking at a coin and certain individuals can even determine the history of a certain country by having just a couple of right coins. You can expect to learn about: - Where to find valuable coins- What impacts the value of a coin- Stamp collecting terminology- How to get started with stamp collecting- How to evaluate art pieces- And a lot more! There are a lot of things that go into coin collecting if you want to be a successful coin collector. If you are interested in coin collecting, it is necessary to know about things such as places which give you the best odds of coming across valuable coins and advantages and disadvantages of each option, along with what determines a value of a coin and how to look after the coin so that it doesn't lose its value. Even holding a coin without gloves could be enough to decrease the value of a certain coin.
Sandals, Mandals, and Mary Janes
Scholarly but approachable. The author's thorough research offers a mix of fact and personal experience.-Liz Mellish, Ph.D., University College LondonShoes really don't have a gender-this is all a social construction. This book is a great addition to the field, as shoes are so often overlooked inthese discussions.-Elizabeth Sweet, Ph.D., San Jose State UniversityIf clothes make the man, then what do his shoes say about him? William Bolen, Ph.D., tackles this question with gusto as he dives into the history of one of the most well-worn pieces of footwear, the sandal. Along the way he contemplates the complicated relationship between gender identity and clothing choice. Are some shoes more "girly" than others? What do they say about the men who wear them? And where do these pressures come from-are they the result of executive marketing decisions, or evidence of deeply rooted cultural norms?Through meticulous research and an academic attention to detail, Dr. Bolen lays out a comprehensive response to these questions and more. Strap in, and get ready to take a walk through history.

Finding and Naming Thomas Chippendale's Marquetry Team
Jack Metcalfe examines the contents of Thomas Chippendale's ground-breaking Director, first published in 1754, that established the 'Chippendale brand'. This eventually led him to uncovering links with a fellow neighbouring furniture maker, Pierre Langlois, operating only a mile from Chippendale's own workshop, whose marquetry designs echoed many motifs found within the Director. Jack explores the possible union between the two furniture makers, embodied in a magnificent commode owned by one leading client. The stage was set, allowing Jack to further identify and reveal the marquetry team, both by name and nationality, who eventually performed all the marquetry work on Chippendale's own commissions that were to follow. In addition, Jack also examines the role of the man who cast all the brass mounts attached to Chippendale's marquetry commissions. With its engaging narrative and scholarly historical links, Jack's book offers revealing insights into the furniture industry of 18th-century London. Jack's passion for the subject shines through on every page, along with his expert knowledge, gained from his unique training in the techniques of Chippendale's marquetry. This book also proves that Jack earlier volume Chippendale's classic Marquetry Revealed was in almost every way accurate in the statements declared in its narrative.
Messages on Edwardian Postcards
The Edwardian era (1901-1910) was known as the Golden Age and a time of new inventions and machinery. It was during this short period that the first cars, aeroplanes and the telephone were introduced into society. In this book, we have nostalgic examples of social history depicted on postcards: gold miners in the Forest of Dean, Rose with her 'rag and bones' horse-drawn cart, a lady chimney sweep pushing her brushes, and various images, including harvesting, rural crafts and transport. This was also the time of the Art Nouveau movement, and other postcards show the delightful work of the artists Alphonse Mucha and Raphael Kirchner. The Suffragette campaign dominated the Edwardian era, and included is a photograph of the Suffragettes marching down Cheltenham High Street with banners advertising a meeting at the town hall. The Edwardian era was indeed a 'Golden Age.'

Wines of Armenia
Wine has always been an integral part of Armenian culture and heritage, even before Christianity and into ancient times. Grapes and wine are embedded into the core of Armenia's national identity. Recent discoveries have shown us that the world's first production of wine began 6,100 years ago in the Areni Cave in Armenia. With such a compelling history, deep traditions and a full heritage exist here in plenty. Yet, the world has limited knowledge about this richness. This book aims to close this knowledge gap and share the beauty and culture with the world. It is the the first and the most comprehensive guide about Armenian wineries and winemaking providing great detail about Armenian grapes, wine regions and wineries. As Mr. Margosian states: "If we don't embrace the Armenian history of wine and winemaking, we can't fully comprehend and evaluate wines in general. There will always be a part missing, and this book aims to fill that gap."
