Tools That Shaped Our Early Nation
This book was an idea that my mother gave me. She said "Why don't you do a book on the old-fashioned tools and old-fashioned ways from the past, like a century ago? That was a little over three years ago. Just recently I decided to go ahead and finish working on this informative composite of what our ancestors used way back in their days of growing up in our country. I still have the plow and corn shucker that came from my mother's house. Growing up in our family was very enlightening because we would always hear about what it was like when our parents grew up and some of the funny stories. I hope that all parents and grandparents will share this with their children and grandchildren.

Oriental Rugs
A must-have reference to the highly confusing rug terminology used across the globe--from Morocco to Turkey, Persia and the Caucasus region to Central Asia, India and China! This monumental reference work--coveted by collectors and scholars alike--remains to fill an important gap in the available literature. Lavishly illustrated with over 1000 photographs and drawings, it offers clear and precise definitions for the rug and textile terms used across a broad swath of the globe--from Morocco to Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus region, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China. It covers priceless museum-quality rugs as well as modern centers of production, and draws on classical scholarship as well as current terms used by producers and traders today. It focuses on the rich hand-knotting and hand-weaving traditions of the Near East and Central Asia, and also includes some Scandinavian and Native American weavings. Rug terms are confusing; the same rug is often called by a baffling array of different names. Some of these refer to a specific geographic or ethnic origin, while others refer to a particular function, method of production or material. This book makes all these terms accessible and understandable, and aids researchers and collectors by precisely identifying each region and ethnic group and explaining the designs, motifs and materials typically used there. It highlights rugs of particular significance and explains technical terms in use by local producers and traders.

Jacques Devaulx. Nautical Works
Five hundred years after the historic French seaport of Le Havre was established, TASCHEN presents a facsimile reproduction of Les premi癡res oeuvres de Jacques Devaulx, pilote en la marine, first published by Le Havre-born "Naval Pilot to the King" Jacques Devaulx in 1583. This extraordinary illuminated manuscript, dedicated to the Duke of Joyeuse, collates nautical, astronomical, and cartographic ideas as well as Devaulx's own extensive notes, observations, and records as a seafarer, hydrographer, cosmographer, and cartographer. An encyclopedic reference for sailors, as well as a magnificent maritime showpiece for his royal employers, the elaborately annotated and decorated folios are a repertoire of naval and cosmographic tools and techniques, including astrolabes, nautical charts of the Atlantic Ocean, tabular statements of diurnal tides, astrological charts, and measurements for solar altitude. They also gather Devaulx's volvelles, wheel charts made of rotating parts that are today considered an early example of the paper analog computer. Together, the folios encapsulate the state of knowledge at a time when sailors pushed the limits of sea exploration and offer a glimpse into the practical daily requirements of Renaissance seafaring. This edition of Devaulx's stunning document, produced in collaboration with the Biblioth癡que nationale de France, reproduces each of the 31 folios in all their brilliant art and science, including the original colorful illuminations, in particular the volvelles. The volume features essays by Jean-Yves Sarazin and Gerhard Holzer, as well as commentaries from a team of experts coordinated by ?lisabeth H矇bert and V矇ronique Hauguel-Thill, contextualizing Devaulx's work with fascinating insights into 16th-century seafaring and exploration.
Precious
A renowned jewelry expert recounts her career working with nature's most extraordinary treasures--gemstones--and traces these rare jewels from ancient Egyptian records through the high-stakes auctions of today. "Engaging and illuminating, Precious is a master class in the history of gems."--Francesca Cartier Brickell, author of The Cartiers Helen Molesworth has been captivated by precious stones since early childhood but she struggled to join the gemstone industry, having no connections to the few family-run companies that have dominated the field for centuries. She persevered, and more than two decades later, Molesworth is now an international authority hired to appraise the extraordinary jewelry of such clients as the British royal family. Precious is packed with inside stories about fabulous jewels associated with generations of celebrities, from Cleopatra (emerald) to Catherine, Princess of Wales (sapphire); from Marilyn Monroe (pearl) to Beyonc矇 (garnet); from Jackie O (pearl) to Lady Gaga (diamond); and from Marie Antoinette (pearl) to Elizabeth Taylor (pearl, ruby, and emerald)! As Molesworth tells it, the history of gemstones is the history of humanity. And so she journeys the world, navigating African diamond mines, Colombian emerald mines, and the sapphire-rich rivers of Sri Lanka to study gems at their source. She has selected ten of nature's most dazzling gems, tracing their discovery to when these cut-and-polished masterpieces first adorned empresses and kings. From the stories of a priceless emerald watch hidden under floorboards for centuries to the common quartz fashioned into world-famous royal jewels, and diamonds selling for multi-millions, Precious is not just a chronicle of archeology and geology, high society and high finance, it's the story of our timeless ambition to make--and wear--something beautiful.

Apacheria Gold
Apacheria is an antiquated term referring to the lands inhabited-and often ruled-by the Apache in the 19th Century. It spanned portions of Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Within Apacheria once existed a golden triangle extending from Silver City and Grants in New Mexico to Alpine, Arizona. Somewhere in this nebulous triangle existed the Lost Adams Diggings, an enchanted canyon that "cried tears of gold." As such, any gold strike in the region was often attributed to the lost diggings. And, to the chagrin of the Apache, gold-hungry prospectors ravaged their lands in search of the precious ore. In the pages ahead are tales of Apache warriors who killed miners with golden bullets, a phantom mountain haunted by a hairy giant, lakes of gold frequented by the Navajo, a Masonic Apache brotherhood guarding their "Golden Mountain," plus the secret treasure caches of the great Apache warriors Geronimo, Juh, and Mangas Coloradas among many others.
Gold Swindle
"Ever since the time the Treasury demanded and secured all gold privately held by individuals or banks, and Congress made private possession of the precious metal a crime (except in the form of newly mined or placer gold), the American people have regarded this buried treasure as a secure protection behind the paper tokens called dollars. How could any part of this great treasure be lost, when by law the Government of the United States is pledged to preserve it, and every possible kind of protection is placed around it? It would be unthinkable, you will say, to have such doubts about the gold we were forced to give over to our Government to have and to hold. Nevertheless the gold, most of which is still held physically within this country, is no longer ours legally. Only a fraction of it belongs to our Government. Irrespective of physical removal, it has been lost to us."
