About the Expert Genny Wilson has been making jewelry for about six years and has no plans to stop anytime soon. Originally starting to make a little extra cash at a local festival, she found it so enjoyable she decided to give her creations away as door prizes. "I was immediately hooked." She says,"From the moment that I finished my first piece there was no going back." When asked why she loved it so much the hobbyist replied, "I've always loved making things, I love the idea of taking a bunch of things and making something new out of it. It's much more enjoyable than buying something at the store because you took the time to make it with your own two hands." So, what made her decide to share her jewelry making knowledge? "I've seen a lot of newcomers on the scene, people that for whatever reason have decided to try their hand at making jewelry. A lot of these people are just like I was when I started and have no idea how to tell the difference between a jump ring and a headpin. I wish there had been a detailed guide I could have used as reference back then." HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.

Coaches, Carriages, and Carts
Horse-drawn vehicles are the foundation of modern transportation. These vehicles produced many innovations used today, such as the spring. Other than observing a horse put to a carriage, there are proper ways to identify these vehicles and their unique characteristics. One style of driving, called "four-in-hand", required the training of four-horses and exercising them well in order to pull large, heavy coaches with many passengers or freight. These vehicles, designed for working horses, gave way to many styles of sporting vehicles and pleasure vehicles. And in turn, as it became fashionable for a lady to drive in public, the distinctions among carriages were drawn even further between which carriages were suitable for a lady and which carriages were suitable for a gentleman. Just as there were many types of carriages and types of coaches, there were also various ways to hold the reins, types of a harness, and variety of breeds to choose from for putting to a coach or carriage. Come explore the type, use, design, and industry of coaches and carriages.

The Hunt for History
Nathan Raab, America's preeminent rare documents dealer, delivers a "diverting account of treasure hunting in the fast lane" (The Wall Street Journal) that recounts his years as the Sherlock Holmes of historical artifacts, questing after precious finds and determining their authenticity. A box uncovered in a Maine attic with twenty letters written by Alexander Hamilton; a handheld address to Congress by President George Washington; a long-lost Gold Medal that belonged to an American President; a note that Winston Churchill wrote to his captor when he was a young POW in South Africa; paperwork signed and filled out by Amelia Earhart when she became the first woman to fly the Atlantic; an American flag carried to the moon and back by Neil Armstrong; an unpublished letter written by Albert Einstein, discussing his theory of relativity. Each day, people from all over the world contact Nathan Raab for help understanding what they have, what it might be worth, and how to sell it. The Raab Collection's president, Nathan is a modern-day treasure hunter and one of the world's most prominent dealers of historical artifacts. Most weeks, he travels the country, scours auctions, or fields phone calls and emails from people who think they may have found something of note in a grandparent's attic. In The Hunt for History, "Raab takes us on a wild hunt and deliciously opens up numerous hidden crevices of history" (Jay Winik, author of April 1865)--spotting a letter from British officials that secured the Rosetta Stone; discovering a piece of the first electric cable laid by Edison; restoring a fragmented letter from Andrew Jackson that led to the infamous Trail of Tears; and locating copies of missing audio that had been recorded on Air Force One as the plane brought JFK's body back to Washington. Whether it's the first report of Napoleon's death or an unpublished letter penned by Albert Einstein to a curious soldier, every document and artifact Raab uncovers comes with a spellbinding story--and often offers new insights into a life we thought we knew.
Cigar Box Lithographs
Just as this publication was ready for theprinter, a very rare cigar box was listedon an internet auction site. Recognizingits rarity and extraordinary appeal, a decision was made to bid on it withthe hopes of purchasing it. As author, Iwon. But I also knew that it was too lateto include this Davy Crockett cigar boxalongside the more than 100 other cigarboxes already headlined and profiled inthis particular 200-page volume. Afterwinning the bid a final decision wasmade to illustrate this cigar box on theback cover of this production. In so doing readers have a chance to scrutinize a very rare and a one-of-a-kind cigar box. Of course, any cigar box that lithographically headlines Davy Crockett usually identifies the famous American frontiersman with the Alamo (see this Volume, page 114) and how he and 200 Texans were killed in 1836 by Santa Anna's 1500 strong Mexican forces. A wide-spread interest in Davy Crockett ever since has become the norm. Tennessee Ernie Ford popularized him in 1955 with his hit "The Battle of Davy Crockett". John Wayne immortalized Davy Crockett when he played the famous frontiersman in the 1960 Hollywood blockbuster, The Alamo. The stunning lithographic print on the inside lid of a wooden cigar box made by William Simpson of Massachusetts, circa 1900, now highlights this back cover of this book and demonstrates the ultimate bravery of a young Davy Crockett protecting individuals inundated with a blizzard and petrified of wolves trying to push their way into the pioneer Log Cabin (see this Volume, pages 108- 109) that the legendary frontiersman is valiantly guarding and resolutely defending. This Davy Crocket lithographic print is one of the highlight prints of the book....

Historic Alabama Bells
After seven years of climbing into attics, domes, towers and steeples, Thomas Kaufmann emerges with a story of Alabama bells that encapsulates the history of the state itself. These bells--some dormant, others pealing still--were forged by the Reveres in Boston. They called Alabamians to worship, celebrated weddings and tolled at funerals. They sounded the death knell for countless parishioners during the havoc of the Civil War, watched over the Freedom Riders and shook from the blast of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing. And while their clear tones have rung out in remembrance of so many of the state's solemn and sacred moments, many of these bells have fallen into neglect, their silence serving as its own reminder of the urgent need for preservation.
Behind Enemy Lines
In 2013, well known scholar and leading authority on Second World War evasion and escape tactics Bob Baldwin, author of "Last Hope: The Blood Chit Story" (Schiffer Publishing, 1997), was invited to guest curate an important exhibit of evasion and escape artifacts at the Frazier History Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The exhibit, "Behind Enemy Lines: Evasion and Escape Aids of World War II," showcased hundreds of rare items which are seldom seen and had never previously been displayed together in one place. To accompany the exhibit, a high quality, full colour catalog featuring photographs and descriptions of all of the artifacts on display was produced. The danger faced by soldiers trapped behind enemy lines has been recognized since the beginnings of warfare. Allied aircrew members, special operations personnel, and other soldiers at high risk of being caught behind enemy lines during World War II had a "secret weapon" unlike anything seen before. This weapon came in the form of the secret Evasion and Escape (E&E) organizations established first by the British government, and then by the United States. These organizations provided E&E training for Allied soldiers, organized safe escape routes in occupied countries, communicated with prisoners in enemy prisoner-of-war camps, and provided special E&E aids. It was an extraordinary operation, unique in military history, and inspired the Survival, Evasion, Rescue and Escape (SERE) operations conducted by today's military. The illustrated catalog proved to be extremely popular as a reference source for students, historians and collectors, and, long after the exhibit ended, copies of this book are still highly sought after. It is now offered as a reprinted second edition, featuring a new foreword and introduction by Mr. Baldwin.
