Aston Martin: The V8 Legacy
This book charts the origins, design and development of the most iconic British supercar of the 1970s and 1980s - the Aston Martin V8. It traces the car's origins from the introductory model of 1967, the DBS, through the various iterations of the V8 versions, and ends with the final models of the range and the spectacular Vantage Zagato. While the car started life with Aston Martin's ageing six-cylinder engine, it quickly received the engine the car was originally designed for; Aston Martin's mighty quad cam V8. The V8 would would power the car through the 70s and 80s, and with various tweaks and tunes would keep Aston Martin's reputation as a vendor of fast, high-performance coupes alive through some very troubling times. The book covers the whole family of standard production cars produced by Aston Martin, along with various special versions, including the Ogle-designed 'Sotheby Special', the Siva S350 and the 'Bulldog' which recently broke the 200mph barrier. Alongside the specials the book also looks at the racing variants, including the Le Mans Lola of 1967, the spectacular V8 production racer run by Robin Hamilton (nicknamed 'the muncher' thanks to its spectacular performance meaning it would eat is brakes for breakfast) and the Nimrod, which saw Aston Martin return to Le Mans in the 1980s. It also looks at the car in film and on the small screen, with James Bond looming large ('On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and 'The Living Daylights') and with Roger Moore cavorting about Europe with Tony Curtis in the popular TV series 'The Persuaders!' polishing the cars celebrity credentials. With some 70,000 words and 250+ pictures, many never seen before, this book pays homage to the The Aston Martin V8. The V8 was the poster car for the patriotic British teenager of the 1970s and 1980s, providing a glimmer of hope that Britain could produce a world beating performance car that was the match of Italian exotica and American muscle. The Aston Martin V8 was that world beater, a car with superlative looks, amazing performance, unparalleled luxury and tough, reliable underpinnings. This book is a heartfelt tribute to the car that kept Aston Martin's hopes and British automotive dreams alive, a car that is now starting to be recognised for the true British supercar it always has been.

Mercedes-AMG
Take a lap through the complete illustrated history of the powerful Mercedes-AMG, from the Red Pig racer to today's 1063-plus horsepower Mercedes-AMG ONE. For decades Mercedes-Benz was known primarily as a builder of luxury sedans, grand touring coupes, and handsome roadsters. But racers like its 1950s Silver Arrows and the stunning 300SL were reminders that performance lurked in its DNA, never far below the surface. Wanting to set that performance free, two former Mercedes-Benz engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, teamed up in 1967 to focus on building M-B-based racing machines. Mercedes-AMG recounts the unlikely, amazing story of how they remade a stodgy Benz sedan into the all-conquering Red Pig racer and thus launched one of Germany's greatest high-performance car companies: AMG. Considerable success in endurance and touring-class competition led AMG to a second business modifying production Mercedes-Benzes for enthusiast customers. By the 1980s, AMG was designing and building high-performance engine assemblies allowing them to modify M-B engines to previously unknown levels of performance. Thus were born legendary cars like the AMG Hammer. Mercedes was well aware of AMG's success, and in 1990 a formal arrangement was made between the two companies leading to jointly developed performance cars sold and serviced through M-B dealerships. In 2005, M-B purchased AMG outright, leading to the creation of Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance arm of the company. Mercedes-AMG covers the full history of these German powerhouse cars, including: Early racing exploits in the 1960sThe iconic Hammer and Black Series carsToday's exclusive, high-performance Mercedes-AMG models ranging from the 420hp A45 hatchback to the 680hp C63 station wagon to the outrageous 1063hp Mercedes-AMG ONEPrototypes, racing, and special models This beautifully illustrated volume belongs on every Mercedes enthusiast's shelf.

The Cockburn Line
Lionel Noble transports readers to the post-World War II narrow-gauge steam era of the South Australian Railways between Peterborough and Cockburn. With little support on the frontier, workers relied on patience, perseverance, initiative and ingenuity to keep trains running. Lionel's recollections lay bare the harsh, perilous conditions and testing extremes of weather that isolated crews endured. These men forged unbreakable bonds, watched each other's backs and carved out moments of fun amid hardship. What stands out most is the crew's fierce pride and passion. It was their unity-and the demands of the Cockburn Line-that brought out their best.

SAAB Cars 1949 to 2011
More than a dozen years after the last cars rolled off the production lines in Trollh瓣ttan, Saab still commands a keen following among car enthusiasts around the world. During the 60 years of its existence, Saab became renowned for the aerodynamic design, technical innovation and sturdy construction of its cars, which famously appealed to individualists and creative thinkers. This handy full-colour guide covers the complete history of Saab's cars. The story begins with the 'Ursaab' prototype and the original 92, which went into production in 1949 as the company branched out from aircraft manufacture after the war; it continues through to the final second-generation 9-5 models in 2011, launched when the company was struggling to stay afloat.Individual chapters are devoted to each of Saab's models, including the 93 and 96 saloons, which enjoyed much success in rallying, the 95 station wagon and the striking Sonett sports cars. The SaabO caravan and the Formula Junior racing car that Saab built during this period are also presented. These early models were followed by the larger 99 and the much-loved and highly successful 900 range. The book features detailed specifications for each version of these two models, including the first turbocharged variants, with which Saab has become synonymous. In 1985, the 9000 took the marque further upmarket and into partnership with Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. The guide continues into the 1990s and 2000s, when General Motors progressively took control of Saab's automotive division. Its bestsellers during this period were its 9-3 and 9-5 ranges, based on GM platforms. Less well-known, especially in Europe, are its 9-4X and 9-7X all-wheel-drive models, not forgetting the 9-2X, a badge-engineered version of the Subaru Impreza. All these models are also presented. Each chapter provides an introduction to the development and evolution of each model, as well as comprehensive technical information. Production numbers and dates are given, as well as details of limited editions. The book is extensively illustrated in full colour, with many archive photographs from Saab Automobile and the Saab Car Museum showing the cars' interior and exterior design.
British Atlantic Express Tender Locomotives
The British Atlantic locomotive flourished in the first decade of the nineteenth century especially on the relatively level stretches of the East Coast mainline. This book describes the design, construction, history, operation and performance of the Great Northern, Great Central, North Eastern and North British Atlantics and the London Brighton & South Coast engines that were developed from the GN design. More unusual were the Lancashire & Yorkshire 'Highflyers' which were some of the earliest and also included are the most powerful of all, Churchward's Great Western Atlantics (converted to 4-6-0s later) and his three French Compounds. Most had been replaced by 4-6-0 and 4-6-2 designs by the 1920s and were withdrawn before the Second World War, though a few lingered to the post-war period and just reached the era of British Railways, though only the Brighton Atlantics survived longer. The last of all, 32424 Beachy Head, was withdrawn in 1958 and has been recreated for the Heritage industry. The book concludes with a brief look for comparative purposes at some of the most influential Atlantics on the rest of the world's railways.

Railways in Victorian London
Explores how London's railways transformed the city into a global hub, impacting everything from suburbia to crime and culture.London has always been a major transport hub. Indeed, it owes its origins to being the location in ancient times of what was then the lowest bridging point of the River Thames. From the 1830s to 1914 it became the focal point of Britain's railway system. In that time a railway network of extraordinary complexity developed, serving the needs of London's citizens and providing access for huge numbers of visitors of all kinds. Here we consider some of the ways in which the railways contributed to London's transformation into a world city, perhaps THE world city of the Victorian and Edwardian period. With an emphasis on the social impact of the railways, the book examines, among other issues, how they contributed to the growth of suburbia, helped to provide London with vital supplies of food and fuel, the way in which the Underground made it quicker and easier to move about, produced huge, luxurious hotels and spectacular bridges and destroyed some of the capital's worst slums. London has always had an underbelly and the coming of the railways created new opportunities for criminal activity. In fictional crime, Sherlock Holmes made frequent use of the railways. Artists found in railways a source of inspiration for their works. Above all, the railways broke down regionalism and helped to develop and reinforce the domination of London over Britain's political and cultural life.
The Colorful Norfolk Southern
A visual history of Norfolk Southern's evolution from monochrome engines to colorful heritage locomotives and beyond. The Norfolk Southern Railway, formed by the merger of the Norfolk & Western and Southern Railways in 1982, has been known since its inception for the black and white/monochrome livery applied to its locomotives. While both of its predecessors once made use of more colorful hues on their motive power, by the 1970s both roads had turned to black paint, although the Southern also included a horizontal area of off-white in what was termed the "Tuxedo" paint scheme. In 2012, the Norfolk Southern, led by its CEO Charles W. "Wick" Moorman, took to heart the suggestion of a young railroad enthusiast and launched the program that created 20 "Heritage" units, which utilized paint schemes from railroads that had formed the two predecessor roads. Some of these were, indeed, colorful. In subsequent years, this group of locomotives was joined by others that have liveries commemorating a variety of entities, which added to the colorful motive power fleet. In addition, it has also become increasingly common for locomotives from other railroads to operate on the NS and vice versa, adding doses of additional color to what otherwise would be rather somber-looking locomotive servicing facilities.
The Transportation Right of Way
Rethinking Transportation Design, Operation, and RegulationToo often, transportation systems fail the very people they are meant to serve. Although engineers and policymakers design systems based on industry standards, real-world users-drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians-face hazards that are often overlooked. From poorly maintained winter roads to a misalignment in expected versus actual usage due to human factors, these oversights put lives at risk.Forensic transportation engineer Robert Gilchrist evaluates conventional thinking in transportation engineering through a human lens. By discussing the disconnect between industry standards and real-world conditions, he encourages a user-centric approach-one that considers human factors, environmental challenges, and the true cost of system failures. Through case studies, regulation analysis, and expert insights, he challenges current practice and supports an adjustment of baseline thinking to improve safety and decision-making.With decades of experience investigating transportation failures, Gilchrist provides a compelling, accessible guide for engineers, policymakers, lawyers, and system users alike to inspire safer, smarter transportation systems.

Peerless
In the glittering dawn of the American automotive age, three names reigned supreme in luxury: Packard, Pierce-Arrow, and Peerless. While Packard and Pierce-Arrow remain familiar to classic car enthusiasts, Peerless has drifted into the mists of history-a name once synonymous with refinement, technological daring, and bespoke craftsmanship. From its origins as a Cleveland manufacturer of bicycles and brewery equipment to its transformation into a builder of some of the most elegant automobiles ever to grace American roads, Peerless was a marque that lived and breathed the ideals of the Gilded Age and the Roaring Twenties.Peerless: America's Silent Luxury Rival charts the rise, triumph, and eventual fall of this remarkable brand. Drawing on meticulous historical research, it follows the company's pioneering engineering feats, its place among the elite "Three Ps," and its determination to uphold the highest standards of quality in an increasingly mass-produced world. From endurance trials and custom coachwork to the audacious creation of one of America's first V8 engines, Peerless carved its reputation on both innovation and opulence.Yet, the same forces that built Peerless eventually brought it down. The Great Depression decimated the luxury car market, forcing the company into an astonishing pivot-abandoning automobiles altogether to brew beer under the Carling label. Today, only a scattering of Peerless automobiles remain, treasured by collectors and celebrated at the world's finest concours events. This is the story of a name worth remembering, a silent rival whose legacy continues to inspire connoisseurs of craftsmanship and history alike.
Hupmobile
Once a proud emblem of Detroit ingenuity, the Hupmobile was born from Robert Craig Hupp's bold vision in 1908: to build a dependable, stylish, and affordable car for America's growing middle class. For more than three decades, Hupmobile delivered on that promise with models that combined engineering reliability with innovative design, from the humble Model 20 to the streamlined Aerodynamic series. But the company's journey was never just about cars. It was a story of bold decisions, rapid expansion, and hard-fought market share in an industry dominated by giants. Through wartime constraints, the roaring boom of the 1920s, and the crushing blow of the Great Depression, Hupmobile adapted, innovated, and at times, gambled everything-introducing eight-cylinder models, hiring famed designer Raymond Loewy, and even partnering with rival Graham-Paige in a desperate bid for survival.By the early 1940s, however, the Hupmobile name faded from the marketplace, its final chapters intertwined with Preston Tucker's ill-fated dream. Today, the surviving cars stand as rare mechanical testaments to a once-mighty independent, cherished by collectors and celebrated at concours fields worldwide.Hupmobile: Ambition and Attrition is the definitive, fact-based chronicle of the marque's rise, struggles, and legacy-a story that mirrors the fate of many early American automakers and offers enduring lessons in vision, competition, and resilience.
Changing Tracks
How to make a 150-year-old run faster, carry more load and make more money In the year 2000, the Indian Railways - the world's second largest railway network under a single management was nearly bankrupt. Over the next eight years, however, there was a dramatic improvement in its performance. From a cash surplus before dividend of Rs 1,071 crores in 2000, it achieved an estimated Rs 25,000 crores (or around Rs 13,000 crores after accounting for all expenditures, receipts and depreciation) in 2008. Alongside came a dynamic and differential tariff policy, and technical changes that led to an enhanced carrying capacity. How all this was accomplished is the focus of this riveting study of change and innovation in the Indian Railways. Based on an extensive examination of internal documents of the Railways and in-depth interviews with key people involved in the change process, authors V. Nilakant and S. Ramnarayan identify four distinctive features associated with the organization's renewal between 2004 and 2008. The change leveraged the strengths of the organization, instead of being preoccupied with its weaknesses. The aim was to change mindsets about costs, revenues, investment and business models. The momentum of the change process was sustained by fostering positive emotions. Changes were persistently and patiently seen to completion by focusing on results. Confronting several myths about organizational change, the book offers powerful lessons for managers and administrators grappling with the challenges of generating innovation and improving performance radically in a changing world.
