Join a Housing Co-op What Could Go Wrong?
Join A Housing Co-op! What Could Go Wrong? What do you do when your affordable dream home becomes a nightmare-and no one will help? When Mark O'Meara moved into a BC housing co-op, he expected community, fairness, and shared responsibility. What he got instead was a front-row seat to institutional dysfunction, weaponized governance, and psychological warfare disguised as "community living." For over a decade, he endured harassment, negligence, and escalating retaliation-all while trying to uphold the very principles the co-op claimed to value: transparency, fairness, and member participation. This gripping true story exposes the dark underbelly of a system meant to protect residents but often shields abusers in power. With a teacher's clarity and a survivor's insight, O'Meara documents a Kafkaesque descent into gaslighting, health crises, and failed oversight-culminating in a devastating betrayal by the very institutions designed to intervene. But this isn't just a tale of trauma-it's a call for reform, a testimony of resilience, and a must-read for anyone navigating co-operative housing, community conflict, or the silent toll of institutional betrayal.Raw. Courageous. Eye-opening. Join A Housing Co-op! What Could Go Wrong? is a warning, a cry for help - and a story that needs to be heard.

The Self-Fed Farm and Garden
"Essential rules from a champion of organic growing."--New York TimesNamed to the Civil Eats "2025 Food and Farming Holiday Book Gift Guide" "A radical yet timeless understanding of what organic farming is truly about. . . . Only Eliot could bring such clarity and wisdom to the conversation. . . . A must-read for anyone who believes that food can be a force for change. . . . A new classic for the ages."--Jean-Martin Fortier, author of The Market Gardener; founder, Market Gardener Institute In The Self-Fed Farm and Garden, renowned organic grower and best-selling author Eliot Coleman presents the organic method as the self-sustaining system it was meant to be, rooted in soil health care. With clarity and confidence born from years of experience, he shows readers how they can shift to a model that continually recharges the soil with organic matter, thus allowing the soil food web to provide all the nutrients that crops need for healthy growth and excellent yields. Filled with the same groundbreaking spirit of his now-classic The Winter Harvest Handbook--which introduced market gardeners to the simple, low-cost techniques by which they could harvest commercial vegetables all winter long--Coleman now shares his equally simple and dependable low-cost system for creating and maintaining guaranteed pure organic soil fertility that will carry your crop yields to perfection. The self-fed approach combines classic techniques practiced by the pioneers of organic farming, including: - Growing green manure crops year-round and shallowly tilling them into the soil - Growing leguminous plants to add nitrogen - Devising effective crop rotation systems for disease and weed control Implementing a self-fed system, Coleman explains, saves money and energy, avoids the hassles of acquiring outside organic matter (which can also introduce undesirable incidental pollutants into the soil), and covers everything that needs to be done to maintain soil fertility. Using classic techniques like green manures as a living soil improvement system ultimately allows you alone--not the farm and garden products industry--to be the master of your destiny. "This book steps back from the frantic energy of the marketplace to take a second look at what we mean when we say 'organic, ' why we need it, and how to do it right." --Dave Chapman, codirector, Real Organic Project

Bunker
For his second book with Hartmann Books, Vincenzo Pagliuca continues his visual-documentary research on the archetypal images of dwelling, that began with his 'm籀nos' series. This time he explores the bunkers of the Vallo Alpino, a network of fortifications designed by the fascist regime in the late 1930s to protect Italy's northern border, which remained under military control until 1993. Pagliuca focuses on the structures still scattered throughout South Tyrol, where the construction of about 300 bunkers was completed with an unprecedented use of resources. The monolithic architectures thus emerge from oblivion. His images spark the viewers' interest in distinctive camouflage methods and the relationships the buildings have developed over the decades with their natural and social surroundings. The bunkers represent a difficult legacy, recalling a dramatic historical period in Central Europe, marked by nationalist ideology and the inability to resolve conflicts through peaceful means -- an era we thought had long since passed... Pagliuca's photographic practice, through a serial approach, focuses on the landscape and human intervention on the land, with a particular interest in the theme of the house and dwelling. His work has been exhibited and published internationally. Bunker is his third book. Born in 1980, he lives and works in Brescia.

The Martins
A wryly funny story about a struggling Parisian writer who finds the heroine of his next novel right outside his apartment "Foenkinos is at his best in this playful novel" -- Elle "A charming, clever book" -- The Independent Is it true that every life is the stuff of novels? Or are some people just too ordinary? This is the question a struggling Parisian writer asks when he challenges himself to write about the first person he sees when he steps outside his apartment. Secretly hoping to meet the beautiful woman who occasionally smokes on his street, he instead sets eyes on octogenarian Madeleine. She's happy to become the subject of his project, but first she needs to put her shopping away. Is it really true, the writer wonders, that every life is the stuff of novels, or is his story doomed to be hopelessly banal? As he gets to know Madeleine and her family, he'll be privy to their secrets: lost loves, marital problems and workplace worries. And he'll soon realise he is not the impartial bystander he intended to be, but a catalyst for major changes in the lives of his characters. Told with Foenkinos's characteristic irony and self-deprecating humour, yet filled with warmth, The Martins is a compelling tale of the family next door which raises questions about what it means to be 'ordinary', and about the blurred lines between truth and fiction. Light yet profound, it's another deeply charming story by this beloved French author.

A History of the World in Twelve Shipwrecks
From renowned underwater archaeologist David Gibbins comes an exciting and rich narrative of human history told through the archaeological discoveries of twelve shipwrecks across time. The Viking warship of King Cnut the Great. Henry VIII's the Mary Rose. Captain John Franklin's doomed HMS Terror. The SS Gairsoppa, destroyed by a Nazi U-boat in the Atlantic during World War II.Since we first set sail on the open sea, ships and their wrecks have been an inevitable part of human history. Archaeologists have made spectacular discoveries excavating these sunken ships, their protective underwater cocoon keeping evidence of past civilizations preserved. Now, for the first time, world renowned maritime archeologist David Gibbins ties together the stories of some of the most significant shipwrecks in time to form a single overarching narrative of world history. A History of the World in 12 Shipwrecks is not just the story of those ships, the people who sailed on them, and the cargo and treasure they carried, but also the story of the spread of people, religion, and ideas around the world; it is a story of colonialism, migration, and the indominable human spirit that continues today. From the glittering Bronze Age, to the world of Caesar's Rome, through the era of the Vikings, to the exploration of the Arctic, Gibbins uses shipwrecks to tell all. Drawing on decades of experience excavating shipwrecks around the world, Gibbins reveals the riches beneath the waves and shows us how the treasures found there can be a porthole to the past that tell a new story about the world and its underwater secrets.

The Return of the Grey Partridge
A 2024 Book of the Year pick in The Spectator and The Times Literary Supplement The ground-breaking story of the return of nature to the Arundel Estate The Return of the Grey Partridge tells the extraordinary story of how wildlife is restored to the Arundel Estate in West Sussex. Prompted by the collapse in numbers of one species, the grey partridge of the title, the managers of the estate woke up to the devastating effect modern farming methods were having on wildlife. Following the estate through the seasons of one year, the book shows how the farm of Peppering is gradually renatured: fields are divided up with hedgerows and trees, beetle banks are built across fields, the land is manured rather than fed with artificial fertilisers, and much of it is returned to pasture. Detailed descriptions of nature give a sense of this large estate coming back to life - still very much farmland, but with a rapid increase in wildlife and biodiversity. And the partridges return. Written in collaboration with the Duke of Norfolk, owner of the Arundel Estate, this moving and hopeful account shows how modern farming can work in partnership with nature to restore not only birdlife but to benefit the whole ecosystem.

The Essentials: The Art of Interior Design
From the bestselling authors of Travel Home and Sense of Place, a comprehensive masterclass on interior design filled with practical tips, advice from some of the most respected names in the field, and inspirational examples Interior designer Caitlin Flemming always gets asked how "the rules" of professional design can be applied to any home--how to pick a paint color and get better lighting, how to mix patterns, where to hang art and curtains, how to get the right scale and placement of furniture and rugs . . . the list of common questions goes on. While there's no one way to design a space, there is a teachable art to creating a harmonious home. So Flemming and her coauthor Julie Goebel came up with the idea for this book--a design bible that divulges the wisdom vouchsafed only to the pros. In The Essentials, Flemming and Goebel consolidate everything it takes to create a beautiful and comfortable home, mining all the knowledge they've amassed from decades designing and styling homes and antiquing and traveling the world. They also ask their colleagues, some of the most talented designers in the world, to contribute advice as well. Organized in three parts, the first section of the book discusses the tacit knowledge that seasoned designers have and how to translate it without being a trained professional. The second, and meatiest, section of the book meticulously lays out the technical essentials for thoughtful home design, covering subjects such as lighting, hardware, textiles, window treatments, furniture, and more. And finally, the third section shows how all the individual elements and details combine to make a room, illustrated through tours of the inspiring homes of nine designers. It takes hard work and years of practice to develop and train an eye for design. This book shortcuts the process by sharing easily teachable techniques and breaking down the factors behind the many decisions that go into beautiful home design The Essentials is an indispensable reference for every design enthusiast.

Lunar planting is easy, accessible, and fun. Simply follow this chart and adjust your gardening activities accordingly.
