ENC Essentials
By the end of 2024, electronic navigational charts (ENC) are projected to be the only official NOAA charts, and all traditional paper charts will have been discontinued and NOAA is on schedule to remove the rest as announced. These charts are being replaced by new (reschemed) versions of electronic navigational charts (ENC) that have been in use for over 15 years in ocean shipping, but have not been used much by recreational and other commercial mariners.As of October, 2023, over 60% of paper charts have been permanently removed, and hundreds of new ENC have replaced them.ENC contain much more information than paper charts do, they are easier to keep up to date, and they add notable safety features to navigation-each chart is a dynamic prescription for drawing the chart that knows where all hazards lie, and therefore our electronic chart system (ECS) in use can warn us of their approach.But ENC look different and are structured differently than paper charts. Italian Assault Craft, 1940-1945
In stark contrast to the modest performance of its large surface fleet in World War II, the Italian Navy's smallest units achieved its most spectacular successes. It made a specialty of unconventional methods of attack--explosive motorboats, human torpedoes, and miniature submarines--that were employed with ingenuity and daring to surprise, discomfort and baffle the enemy. In December 1941, the whole balance of the naval war in the Mediterranean was altered by six divers riding three of the SLC craft they called maiale ('pigs') who penetrated Alexandria harbor to cripple the battleships Valiant and Queen Elizabeth, surely one of the most impressive ratios of results to resources in naval history. This book is the first complete history of these craft, both the details of the technology and the history of their deployment. Beginning in the Great War with the extraordinary 'jumping' boats designed to scale harbor boom defenses, the story takes in the inter-war development of both lightweight surface craft and underwater systems from small submarines to 'Gamma' assault divers. By way of comparison, equivalent developments in other navies are analyzed, including the British 'chariots' which were little more than copies of the Italian SLCs. Every operation by these craft is described, cataloguing the forces involved and the results, from high-profile successes like the sinking of the cruiser York by explosive motorboat to lesser-known incidents - the use of such craft by the Israelis as late as 1948 for example. Many were carried out by the famous Decima MAS, a unit as legendary in Italy as the SAS in Britain, and this book provides a comprehensive chronicle of their activities. By the eve of World War II, the firm had assumed the familiar Delta Air Lines name and boasted forward-thinking management, a modern fleet of aircraft, and increased revenue from passenger ticket sales. Now headquartered in Atlanta, Delta counts itself among the oldest and largest airlines in the world, with nearly 90,000 employees and more than 5,400 flights per day. Delta's expansion and survival are anomalies in an industry historically dominated by government and special interests. Hoogerwerf's masterful history of Delta's beginnings underscores the company's contribution to agriculture, southern industrialization, and the development of commercial aviation in the United States.
