Native and Non-Native Perennials for Prince Edward Island
Native and Non-Native Perennials for Prince Edward Island: A Pictorial Library Volume 2: Third EditionThe idea of developing a pictorial library of native and non-native perennials for Prince Edward Island originated over twenty years ago while the author was traveling through South Carolina. Following a visit to an arboretum with educational resources on-site, the author was inspired to develop such an arboretum on Prince Edward Island, in doing so, the author established winter hardiness trials with plant species hybrid and cultivars from worldwide sources and provides tours and educational sessions to the disabled and other interested groups outlining plant identification features, cultural information, impactful native and invasive pests, height, form, timing of flowering. The library will also outline common methods of propagation, invasive plant potential of the plant in question in "Prince Edward Island"'s climatic and environmental conditions."

Mindfulness in the Garden
Mindfulness in the Garden offers simple mindfulness verses (gathas) composed to connect the mind and body and to bring the reader/gardener's awareness to the details of the present moment as they work in the garden. These gathas are signposts leading to nature, to the present, and ultimately to one's self through the love and understanding they evoke. The gathas offered with each gardening activity serves to water the seeds of mindfulness within us, and to soften and prepare the ground for our ability to be present. Mindfulness in the Garden values weeds as important messengers seeking to bring into close communion our spiritual nature with that of the environment. It likens spiritual practice to cultivating a garden and inspires each person to accept themselves and start where they are, weeds and all. Through the practice of mindful gardening, we invite not only the thriving of the natural world but also the flowering and beauty of the pure land of our true self to emerge.Features black and white botanical illustrations throughout. Foreword by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, author of Present Moment, Wonderful MomentNew Afterword by Mick McEvoy, manager of Plum Village Happy Farm in France
Xeriscaping & Sustainability for New England
I guess you could say it all started with an article from college, and all I had was a Xerox copy. I have held on to the same article trying to find the author. Then, after many, many years, I finally have and even found a copy of the book to buy. The author, Carlton B. Lees, and the book New Budget Landscaping, Chapter 1 "in the beginning" started my career with the outdoor world. The author takes gardens, landscapes, and the natural environment and shows us how we can create rooms, living environments, into our own backyards. History shows how we have manipulated our taste or desire. And the planet has a way of paying us back, one way or another. So, as we turn to work with nature and not against her, let's consider how we can achieve satisfaction for ourselves and this wonderful planet we call home.He uses words - use, comfort, pleasure, villa, area, space, outer space, organization, chaos, room, and garden - to describe the garden. We need to understand these words to sculpt, create, and make sense of our environment or make sense of the chaos and turn it into a living area to enjoy by humans and nature.James Rose, a landscape architect, says, "being inside a garden should be like being inside a piece of sculpture."This book will focus on how to achieve this with low water plants to help conserve the planet's supply and still have beauty, function, form, and balance. In 1999 as an undergrad, I wrote an article titled "Xeriscaping for New England," and until now have slowly been trying to put this book together, so here we go.
Postharvest Nanotechnology for Fresh Horticultural Produce
Food scarcity and insecurity is an alarming issue throughout the world. Postharvest loss due to both mechanical damage and microbial spoilage significantly influences the shelf life and hence the availability of agricultural produce. Once initiated, the microbial spoilage can make bulk quantity of a given agricultural product unacceptable for human consumption, and several methods have already been used to try to manage this. Considering the limited success of the available methods, there is increasing interest in exploring nanotechnological methods. These methods are being considered for both the development of various platforms for antimicrobial/barrier packaging applications that minimize the contact of agricultural produce with the external environment, and also for design sensors to ensure food safety and quality. The impact of various nano-systems developed through material engineering on the shelf-life enhancement and storage of fresh horticultural produce will have revolutionary effects on post-harvest management in the coming years. Hence, Postharvest Nanotechnology for Fresh Horticultural Produce has been edited to advance understanding of material development, intelligent selection of nanomaterials to ensure the nontoxic nature, and future perspectives of nanotechnology on postharvest produce. This includes various types of nanoparticles exploited for the postharvest management, their mechanism of action, varied applications and material engineering, along with natural products including essential oils and plant bioactives, modelling of various tailor-made materials to meet the required properties of the packed food, advancements in the nanotechnological applications for the minimally processed food, and the toxicity concerns.Key Features: - Describes advances in nanotechnology for postharvest management- Includes extensive details on the applications of material engineering for post-harvest applications using nanotechnology and future aspects- Provides extensive data on the types of nanomaterials used and the fabrication methods employed for the design of tailor-made products for the post-harvest managementThis book reviews the current scientific advancements and future prospects of the nanotechnological interventions in meeting the quality and quantity standards of the horticultural produce and minimally processed food and will be a valuable reference for beginners, researchers, subject experts, and industrialists.

The Interesting World of Carnivorous Plants & How to Grow Them
Take a journey into the fascinating world of carnivorous plants, and discover how diverse they are, thriving in nearly every part of our planet except Antarctica. This book offers information on their classification and origins, including details about their natural habitat, comprehensive descriptions of the plants, and a wealth of coloured photographs. Most importantly, it also explores the cultivation of these plants, examining all of their specific requirements.Whether you are new to growing carnivorous plants or have been cultivating them for years, I have intentionally included numerous botanical terms throughout this book, all of which are explained in the glossary. Even experienced enthusiasts may find it helpful to consult a few of these entries (unless, of course, you are already botanically qualified). This approach prepares you - especially if you are just starting out and plan to expand your collection - for the time when you decide to become more involved with the carnivorous plant community and its societies. That way, you will already have a solid grasp of these terms and can choose whether you wish to use them yourself.I believe and hope that this book will be most useful, for both those new to cultivating these fascinating plants and for enthusiasts alike.Enjoy!About the AuthorFrom a young age Dirk's passion for plants, cultivating many different types and desire to acquire a deeper understanding of them led to his focus on carnivorous plants, at a time they were not widely known about and not greatly understood. Although he does not hold formal horticultural qualifications, his background in report writing, project work, teaching and years of hands-on experience in growing and photographing carnivorous plants has provided him with the skills and ability to write this book.

Beauty & Abundance
Originally the small plots where rural British workers grew the vegetables, herbs, and flowers they needed, cottage gardens were romanticized and reimagined by nostalgic Victorian gardeners into a bucolic idyll. The style has endured ever since: drifts of colorful perennials mingle with fragrant roses, boisterous self-seeders teeter on the brink of chaos, fruit and vegetables scramble through rustic supports. Small in scale, wildlife friendly, natural, and organic, 'old-fashioned' cottage gardens are perfectly in tune with gardening in the modern day. Featuring some of the most beautiful examples of cottage gardens in the UK today, these incredible spaces will transport you into a distinctly British world of peonies, foxgloves, roses and dahlias, with interviews with the designers and head gardeners featured to provide plenty of inspiration for bringing your own cottage garden to life.
