The Little Book of Floriography
Revealing a world of secret messages contained within a single petal. Floriography - the language of flowers - is the ancient art of encoding hidden messages in the type, colour and arrangement of plants, allowing individuals to express emotions and sentiments that they may not be able to articulate through words. Featuring 100 of the most popular and available blooms from around the world, this beautifully illustrated gift book gives the botanical name for each plant, a description of its significance and place in folklore, and the story behind its meaning. It also reveals how floral symbolism has been used over the centuries in literature and art, from Hamlet's Ophelia handing out rosemary 'for remembrance' and pansies 'for thoughts', to Oscar Wilde urging his friends to wear green carnations as a subtle code for homosexuality. The idea that flowers have secret meanings would have been well understood by contemporary audiences - and we are seeing a revival of the practice today. From mimosa - which signifies chastity because its leaves close when touched - to the varied messages encoded within different colours of geraniums, Floriography offers a creative way to convey feelings and can add an extra layer of beauty and significance to a gift of flowers. The flowers in Kate Middleton's wedding bouquet signified love, happiness, gallantry and fidelity. If someone sends you a bouquet of hydrangea and lobelia, beware: they stand for heartlessness and malevolence.

French Blooms
This first book by Sandra Sigman, award-winning floral designer and owner of Les Fleurs, presents arranging flowers in the French style--bouquets that are chic and romantic. As Sandra Sigman learned while living in Paris in her twenties, the French consider each floral arrangement a unique work of art filled with passion, movement, texture, and surprise. In French Blooms, Sigman shares the distinct design principles she learned from her favorite Parisian florist, and offers tutorials, with images and instructions for creating French-inspired arrangements for different areas of the home. Projects include a mantle display in Ironstone gravy boats, compote-style dining room arrangements, powder room posies, and beribboned hand-tied bouquets. It details the lives of 16 women who were the wives of well-known plantsmen, 10 members of various royal families and 13 goddesses. For each, there is a short biography including details of why they were chosen to have a plant named after them, followed by information about their plants. The first book, There She Grows, published in 2018 began the story by outlining the lives of 34 'Plants-women', who were either botanists, horticulturalists, plant collectors or botanical artists in their own right.

The Language of Flowers 1550-1680
Offering a new insight into the evolution of the Language of Flowers, Rachel Henry's book contains meanings given to 389 flowers in the 16th and 17th centuries together with additional nuances that were added to the messages by the coloured threads used to tie the bouquets. The heyday of the Language of Flowers was in the 19th century. But, as Rachel Henry's discovery of five long-forgotten books published between 1558 and 1671 shows, it was being used centuries earlier by the French upper classes to send loving, critical and even raunchy messages. As well as the lists of meanings, The Language of Flowers 1550-1680 investigates the predominant Victorian theory about the origin of floral dictionaries, looks at contemporary arguments for and against, and puts forward some new suggestions as to how the Language of Flowers evolved.Additional details are given for individual plants, including current scientific names, descriptions, folklore and history. This is the first book in a series about the Language of Flowers.

Nature on the Doorstep
Nature on the Doorstep reveals the simple pleasures of paying attention to the natural world in one's own backyard over the course of a year. In weekly letters, Angela Douglas shares the joys and curiosities of a decidedly ordinary patch of green in upstate New York cultivated through the art of "strategic neglect"--sometimes taking a hand to manage wildlife, more often letting nature go its own way. From the first flowers of spring to cardinals singing in the winter, Douglas shows us the magic of welcoming unexpected plant and animal life into one's backyard. A paean to the richness we find when we stop to look and let be, Nature on the Doorstep celebrates the role humble backyards play both in conservation efforts and in an expanded appreciation of the living world.

The New Innovative Art Of Preserving Fresh Flowers & Foliage NOW You Can MASTER The TRADE SECRETS To PRESERVE LUMINOUS FLOWERS To Remain Freshly Hydrated & Petal Soft For Years, Rather Than Days
STOP TIME & KEEP YOUR FLOWERS FRESHLY HYDRATED & PETAL SOFT FOR YEARS, RATHER THAN DAYS!What The Book Offers NATURAL EARTH FRIENDLY TRADE SECRETS to Preserve Luminous Flowers that will make your moments last a LIFETIME. If you're a lover of foliage and flowers but are sad to see them sag, this is the book for you. It's always a wonderful feeling to receive a beautiful bouquet, refresh a room with a burst of color or to walk down the aisle with some flowers in your hands. There's nothing more depressing than seeing them fade, cloud the water and after only a few days, curl up and die. This book offers the solution - without any harsh toxic chemicals. Throughout the course of her life, the Author has been a lover of all things floral and foliage based. Her passion was for nature and preserving it in every way possible. It begged the question; how can we make cut flowers last without putting toxic elements back into the world that provided them? It took many years, and many failed attempts, but finally she came up with a simple, Eco-Friendly way to keep her blooms in full eye-popping color, lasting for years and as silky soft as the day they were picked. And now, this formula is available to you, along with the simple, step by step guide to do it yourself. So, save your wallets and your flowers, by picking up this read today. The goal of this book When beginning this journey, the Author intended to save herself, and her flowers, from the endless cycle of pluck, present, and perish. Working with flowers for so long, she was well aware of the old-fashioned ways to set flowers. The problem was that these antiquated methods were awful for the environment, caustic to the skin and even after all that, the flowers became dull and crispy - shedding their glory and pollen across the floor in a never-ending mess. She knew she had to do something, but not giving up her flowers. Once she had perfected it, she finally found a way to preserve her joy, for herself and for her customers. But, like a pretty poesy, she knew that simple pleasures like that had to be shared. Nature should be available for everyone to enjoy. And thus, from a little seed, grew this book, here to give you the gift of perfectly hydrated preserved flowers in any style you want. It isn't a technical book; the ingredients don't cost the earth (in either way) and the instructions are easy to follow; so easy that even a teenager can craft without the overwhelm. This is a book, not just for industry professionals, but for the everyday man and woman who can appreciate the soft hydrated touch of a pretty petal and smile. You don't have to worry about FRESHNESS because it's LOCKED IN right from the moment you preserve your cut flowers. It contains high-quality ingredients, which are Eco-Friendly proprietary technology, "SMART WATER LOVING HYDROPHILIC SOLUTION SOLVENTS", that LOCKS IN MOISTURE, and the active ingredients deeply penetrate through the flowers for best possible results!
Terrain: The Houseplant Book
"An informative and inspiring guide to collecting and growing plants at home." --Gardenista "This book is a must-have!" --Hilton Carter, author of Wild at Home, Wild Interiors, and Wild Creations Secrets of the Houseplant Hunters Terrain's plant experts travel the world in search of the most unusual and interesting houseplants. In this inspiring and practical guide, they share their favorite specimens: exotic and eclectic ferns, like the skeleton fork, a primitive (and unfussy) predecessor to the family; new aroids to feed that monstera obsession; and adventurous trailing plants like dischidia, which is found cascading from tree branches in its native Thailand; plus succulents and cacti, indoor trees, the best low-care plants, and "rule breakers" like bamboo muhly grass that can make an unexpected move indoors. Along the way, Terrain introduces their favorite independent growers--passionate plant lovers who are creating new hybrids and bringing back old-school specimens to the market. And readers learn Terrain's way of styling and overarching philosophy on care: the most important thing we can give our plants is our presence.
Plants of Significance to Bees
The book was written as reference material to aid in the study of the National Diploma in Beekeeping (NDB). This is why the backbone of the book is the NDB plant list. However, for the NDB there is an expectation that the candidate will demonstrate knowledge beyond that of the plant list. So there are additional plant families and individual species included to give the reader a more rounded knowledge of the subject. The book aims to bring knowledge of the plant families and their traits as well as in-depth information about the structure of the pollen of the important plants for honeybees. However, where possible there is reference to non-honey bee species to ensure that knowledge of other pollinators is included and considered. It should also serve as a valuable reference book for anyone studying pollen microscopy. It is the first time that pollen light-microphotographs have been shown with electron photomicrographs in a book of this type. The book will also serve as a suitable guide for the gardener who is planting for bees or more generally for pollinators.
The Magic of Chelsea - A Flower Show Like No Other
This book has come about by the writer, Christine, having visited the Flower Show, Chelsea, in the United Kingdom in 2022. It incorporates over two hundred beautiful photographs and thirteen accompanying poems. There are descriptive write ups to many exhibits. As a Master Florist, judge, and qualified teacher, she has a lot to offer. The reason for Christine's interest, not only in the flower show, but also in the many displays exhibited, comes about from her first short attendance at the show, for her employer during her floristry training in the United Kingdom in the late nineteen sixties. From that moment on, she has had a commitment and connection to the show, floristry and the education needed by people to become a florist. While perusing the colourful pages, and short comments, the book offers hours of enjoyment. Through the poems, the reader will gain an insight into the atmosphere, and the Magic the Flower Show offers to many thousands of people yearly. With so many exhibits on display, from sculpture created through so many mediums: glass, copper, marble and more, and to flower growers extending the boundaries taking the flower industry to ever creative outcomes. Of course, then the floral design exhibits, each with its own message to the many who stopped to look, think, and ponder on the creation set before them. It would be difficult to compare such an experience, as experienced at the world- and first-class annual meeting by the people that love flowers. Because not all people can travel to such an event, it was Christine's idea to take the book and its content to the people of the world, who also love flowers and the joy they bring into so many people's lives.

Wharton's Republic of Texas
Clarence R. Wharton (1873-1941) spent his adult life practicing law in Houston. Legal work made him a prosperous man, which allowed him to indulge in collecting rare volumes of Texas history, and writing works which have become rare. Like this one. His History of the Republic of Texas was published in 1922 and has been almost entirely forgotten. That's a real shame, because Judge Wharton tells the story of the Republic better than anyone. His history reads like a knowledgeable friend talking to you, and that makes it a pleasure. Judge Wharton breaks the history of the Republic of Texas into four parts: The Colonies, The Revolution, The Republic, and Annexation. Each of those sections contains several of his "talks". Like I said, his writing style is clear and easily absorbed. The judge accomplishes the literary miracle of conveying a depth of information with grace and simplicity in these nearly 70 vignettes about early Texas history.
