Smoky the War Dog
Now in paperback In March 1944, deep in the New Guinean jungle, a little Yorkshire Terrier was found hiding in a foxhole. Her presence there was a mystery, but American soldier Bill Wynne became her new owner. He named her Smoky, never dreaming that his little mate would turn out to be quite so extraordinary. When he fell ill with dengue fever, Bill asked to have Smoky by his side and she was soon visiting other soldiers on the ward, bringing happiness to the sick and wounded. This experience inspired Bill to visit injured soldiers with Smoky while on leave in Australia and she is recognised today as the first therapy dog of record. She performed other daring deeds as part of her war effort, including laying wire to take over a Japanese-held airfield, and went on to become a beloved performer on children's television. In Smoky the War Dog, historian and former military dog handler Nigel Allsopp tells the story of Smoky and Bill, long forgotten in Australia, and chronicles his own efforts to see Smoky formally recognised for her war work. He interweaves Smoky's story with remarkable tales of other military dogs, past and present, and the vital roles they play in wartime.

Piglet
In the tradition of the beloved New York Times bestsellers Marley and Me and Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, "a beautiful, inspiring" (Laura Schroff, New York Times bestselling author) memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn't hesitate to say, "yes." Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink "puppy with a purpose" (Good Morning America). The anxious and traumatized Piglet weighed under two pounds upon his welcome into the Shapiro household--which included Melissa's husband Warren and their three college-aged kids, plus six other rescued dogs. After weeks of reassurance, and lots of love, Piglet connected, gained confidence, and his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa soon forged a powerful bond with Piglet, allowing the two to communicate without sound or visual cues. Two months later, when the day arrived to say goodbye to the now dashing, six-pound pink dog with the larger-than-life spirit, Melissa faced a heart-wrenching decision. Could she hand him over to someone willing to give Piglet full-time attention or could she adapt her life to make a permanent place for him? Of course, the answer was simple: love would find a way. Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy and His Family fully illustrates this heartwarming story of one special little puppy who teaches the power of empathy, love, and kindness. "Feeling hopeless? Pick up this book, savor its heartwarming messages, and share it widely. It is that good" (Marc Bekoff, PhD, author of Canine Confidential).
All Dogs are from Missouri
All Dogs Are from Missouri: Basic Obedience, the "Show Me" Way is an expansion from the basic obedience section of Steve's first book, From Sit to Gundog. He wanted to write a book for all the loving canine companion we call the family dog and their wonderful human companions. And guess what? Steve has done just that! Steve shares his knowledge and training expertise throughout his book and addresses, virtually, every key step of dog ownership, basic discipline, and the "how to" of training, which will turn your dog into a well-behaved canine citizen. The book is informative and fun to read and weaves a masterfully descriptive narrative with an attractive collection of corresponding illustrations and photographs. Anyone who loves dogs, and would love to train their next companion, will appreciate the concepts and methods Steve has used on his own dogs and every dog that comes through Dogs of the Feather. Beside every well-trained dog is a very happy human companion. This book will give you the ability to not only train your dog but create a bond that can only flourish with time. Steve has always said that all dogs are from Missouri, the "show me" state. You show them what you want them to do, show them how to do it, make sure they understand it, and once you know they understand it, you reinforce that behavior. If you asked Steve about dog training, he would tell you that, "dog training is not rocket science, it's an art." Be an artist and paint the picture, the "show me way."

The Art of Listening to the Heart
In this memoir collection, retired veterinarian James Kenyon recalls his days in veterinary practice. From heartwarming to heartbreaking and everything in between, Kenyon writes of his care for beloved family pets, livestock, and their human caretakers. His memories illustrate a true devotion and love for veterinary work, as well as a passion for people and local history. Each chapter relates a specific memory of working with a quirky, loyal, and loveable animal, as well as the quirky, loyal, and lovable humans who owned them. The work offers not just insight into the work of a veterinarian, but into human nature and the manner in which people relate to and care for each other, as well as their animals.
The Wild Horse of the West
The story of the mustang and the wild or feral horse, whether of Spanish or American ancestry, is recounted by Walker D. Wyman in this authoritative book, which has been called "the final word on the history of the horse on the western range." Among matters treated are theories as to the origin of the wild horse; its place in the history and economy of the Indian (the coming of the hose "was as important to him as the coming of steam to the white man"); the origin of the western pony and the palomino; and the disappearance of the mustang and the extermination of the western horse from the range.
The Pinto Horse and the Phantom Bull
In 1927 Owen Wister called The Pinto Horse "the best western story about a horse that I have ever read." The pinto roamed the Montana range in the late 1880s, surviving wolves and blizzards and earning the respect of the herd but never blending in, always standing out in vulnerable perfection. After years of trusting to human kindness, he falls into the hands of fools. The Phantom Bull, first published in 1932, is also marked by authenticity and controlled beauty of style. Old Man Ennis, who ranched on the upper Madison in Montana, grudgingly admired the slate-colored Zebu cow, whose wild cunning was passed on to her calf. The calf grows into a monster bull, not personified but endowed with the suggestion of a definite point of view. A phantom glimpsed against the horizon-that is the image he leaves. The Pinto Horse and The Phantom Bull, both illustrated by the western painter Edward Borein (1873-1945), were the only books written by Charles Elliott Perkins (1881-1943). Introducer Jay Fultz, formerly Bison Books editor at the University of Nebraska Press, is the author of In Search of Donna Reed.
Mister, You Got Yourself a Horse
Plains folklorist Roger L. Welsch has edited a lively collection of stories by some master yarnspinners--those old-time traveling horse traders. Told to Federal Writers' Project fieldworkers in the 1930s, these stories cover the span of horse trading: human and equine trickery, orneriness, debility--and generosity.

Breeding, Genetics and Genomics of Ornamental Plants
Ornamental crops account for more than US $42 billion globally. With the exception of few floral species, limited genetic, genomic, and breeding information is publicly available, owing to the fact that the majority of breeding work is performed by the private sector. Public research programs are increasingly participating in ornamental cultivar development and genetic studies. With lower sequencing costs, genomic information of non-model species including ornamental crops is continuously becoming available. Ornamental breeding utilizes a wide array of breeding strategies ranging from traditional crossing and selection methods to the use of next-generation sequencing in genomics and transcriptomics for gene identification and trait development. A continuing search of new species for the ornamentals industry has resulted in the utilization of tools that increase diversity and in the development of alternative methods for obtaining new crops by achieving interspecific and intergeneric crosses. This Special Issue aimed to present papers on new breeding methods, novel cultivars and species entering the ornamental industry, the identification of genes conferring novel traits, technological developments in ornamentals research, and the use of next-generation sequencing to improve ornamental plants.
DELILAH and Others Like Her
Grieving the loss of a pet isn't any different from that of a human, or is it?Millions of people worldwide have owned a pet, currently own a pet, or will own a pet, and the species or kind of animal makes no difference. Pets bring us comfort, along with health benefits. But what happens when a pet is abandoned, abused, dumped, starved, or tied to a tree because the owner didn't want them or couldn't take care of them. It's infuriating and makes us wonder "why" or "how could they do this" to a pet.For these twenty beautiful creatures in this book of love and loss, they found their forever homes where they would be safe, loved, fed, cuddled, and held onto for as long as possible. These pet owners were open and willing to share their pets' lives from the first day to the last day when that beloved pet would cross the Rainbow Bridge.A few of these pets are a couple dogs named Mick and Laddie, a hamster named Ripple, a Nigerian goat named Jef矇, and this author's cat Delilah for whom the book is named, plus many more pets with their photos and lessons learned. This author is truly sorry for your loss for those of you who have had the privilege of having a pet in your life that you loved unconditionally and then watched them pass away. Just as it is with "parenthood," so it is with "pethood." Even though they are no longer with us, they are never forgotten. You are not alone in this journey called the "circle of life." This book shares many stories that provide humor, silly things our pets do, some ways to process grief and help you heal from that loss, one baby step at a time. If you are feeling lost and alone due to the passing of your pet, Pick Up Your Copy and just know that you are not alone. If you are open and willing to share your pet's story, you'll find the author's email address on the back cover of her book.

One of our clients had worked in Jack Russell rescue for years, and I often worked with her fosters, which gave me a well-rounded introduction to the breed. She then decided to transition into breeding. After my client's dog had its first litter, I knew that I wanted to add one to my home. Two years later, I reserved a pup.Being in the veterinary field, I was blessed with a full maternity experience. I got to see the pups in-utero on radiographs and ultrasound. I got to see them a couple of days after they were born, again when they came in for their first exams, and when my puppy was weaned, he spent the night with me in the hospital as I was working on patients. He was born on October 30 and was given the name Goblin, which I promptly changed to Marty McFly, and he has been my constant companion since that night. Having a Jack Russell Terrier is no small feat; it can be very challenging at times, but I have never regretted opening my heart to one, and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you.
