Yo' Mama's Disfunktional!
From the celebrated author of Freedom Dreams, a thought-provoking look at how the multicolored urban working class are the solution--not the problem--to the ills of American cities A limited Beacon Classics edition, with a gorgeous spot gloss cover and retro, classic palette In this classic work, acclaimed historian Robin D. G. Kelley undermines false perceptions of Black culture to highlight how grassroots movements hold the key to revolutionizing urban America. Starting with an insightful look at street culture--from the "dozens" to pick-up basketball--Kelley shows how these misunderstandings of Black culture are at the center of the failure of public policy, scholarship and social movements to save our cities. He critiques both conservatives and liberals for ignoring what these cultural forms mean for their practitioners. Blending wit, intellect, and historical detail, he offers groundbreaking analyses of the multicultural roots of Black urban culture and the mistakes of the labor movement in denying the importance of cultural factors. With Kelley's crucial insights as timely now as when they were first published, this repackaged edition of Yo' Mama's Disfunktional! shows how the most heartening progress toward a better future for urban America is revealed in urban grassroots movements.

Pauline Julier
A collection of Pauline Julier's art that expands from the terrestrial to the cosmos to comment on our place in the universe. At the interface of documentary and fiction, the multimedia works collected in Pauline Julier take us on a dizzying journey through space and time. Julier's art travels through the geological ages of planet Earth, through different histories, natural disasters, and the Anthropocene's paradigm shifts and into outer space. Her background in political science and photography is reflected in her work: looking into the past and the future, she investigates topical questions about our unlimited use of natural resources, escapism, and the colonization of space. Conceived and designed as a work of art in its own right, this volume offers a comprehensive insight into Julier's art and thought through a conversation with eminent scholar of science and technology studies Donna Haraway alongside contributions by curator C矇line Eidenbenz, anthropologist, and writer Nastassja Martin, and art historian, curator, and author Chus Mart穩nez.

The World According to Vincent Van Gogh
"I believe that at present we must paint nature's rich and magnificent aspects; we need good cheer and happiness, hope and love." -- Vincent van GoghVincent van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo form what is perhaps the most frank and unique body of artists' correspondence ever written--one that offers a rare insight into Van Gogh's mental turmoil and artistic motivations. His descriptions of everyday concerns are interspersed with highly intense passages, beautiful sentences, and wise words on subjects such as ambition, love, loneliness, and his battle with mental illness. These surprising, melancholy, and sometimes funny comments continue to inspire and console many people today, some 130 years after he wrote them. This selection of Van Gogh's most beautiful quotations unites his exceptional and touching words with reproductions of his much-loved artworks. They convey the same kind of recognition and emotion that he sought to achieve with his art. He was eager to reach other people and to mean something to them--but he could never have suspected that through his immense talent for capturing personal experiences, ideas, and feelings in evocative and appealing language, that he had genuine life lessons to offer us. "There are so many people . . . who imagine that words are nothing. On the contrary, don't you think, it's as interesting and as difficult to say a thing well as to paint a thing. There's the art of lines and colors, but there's the art of words that will last just the same."

Nature Matters
Revitalising conversations around environmentalism and ecopoetics, this new gathering of African, Asian and Caribbean diaspora voices is both urgent and inspirational. There has been a welcome surge of nature writing in recent years. Yet this has raised questions as to whose voices are privileged and heard in a space predominantly occupied by Western European traditions and authors. In Nature Matters, poets Mona Arshi and Karen McCarthy Woolf seek to redress this imbalance. Their genre-enriching anthology presents brand-new commissions alongside formative works from the past fifty years that invite us to reconsider nature poetry from global-majority perspectives. Image-rich and formally diverse, the poems explore fundamental and ecological themes including climate crisis and the Anthropocene; urban nature, solitude and alienation; protest and radical empathy; Indigenous wisdom and alternative histories. "A vigorous and timely hymn to the universality of nature. It's amazing that Nature Matters hasn't existed until now." - Sathnam Sanghera "An exquisitely profound and groundbreaking testament to our natural world by many of the most powerful poetic voices of our times." - Bernardine EvaristoContributors: Victoria Adukwei Bulley, John Agard, Jason Allen-Paisant, Moniza Alvi, Anthony Anaxagorou, Raymond Antrobus, Mona Arshi, Andre Bagoo, Khairani Barokka, Dzifa Benson, Jay Bernard, Sujata Bhatt, Malika Booker, Kamau Brathwaite, Elizabeth-Jane Burnett, Anthony Vahni Capildeo, Mary Jean Chan, Kayo Chingonyi, David Dabydeen, Fred D'Aguiar, Kwame Dawes, Imtiaz Dharker, Tishani Doshi, Nidhi Zak/Aria Eipe, Inua Ellams, Richard Georges, Lorna Goodison, Mina Gorji, Will Harris, Ranjit Hoskote, Sarah Howe, Ian Humphreys, Sharan Hunjan, Ishion Hutchinson, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Anthony Joseph, Bhanu Kapil, Jackie Kay, Mimi Khalvati, Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa, Zaffar Kunial, Hannah Lowe, Karen McCarthy Woolf, Roy McFarlane, Nick Makoha, E. A House to Live with
Examines sixteen residential buildings designed by Dom Hans van der Laan and his students for the first time. Today, Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-91) is something of a cult figure of European post-World War II architecture. The Dutch Benedictine monk and architect dedicated his life to the search for fundamental principles of architecture, and his thoughts on numerical relationships and dimensional systems were highly influential in mid-twentieth-century architectural theory. A House to Live With is the first book to comprehensively explore the residential buildings designed by Van der Laan and some of his students in the Ecclesiastical Architecture course in s-Hertogenbosch, which he directed between 1946 and 1973. Sixteen of them, built between 1966 and 1985, are featured in full detail through photographs and plans newly produced for this book, and analyzed with regard to their compositional and design principles. Essays examine the mathematical relationships of numbers and volumes that are fundamental to van der Laan's designs, alongside a discussion of how he was influenced by ancient Roman architecture. Light is shed also on the interplay of house and garden and house and patio, and the positioning of the one large table in the house, which to van der Laan was of key significance. Thoroughly researched and highly readable, this volume introduces Hans van der Laan's architectural ideas and housing designs in full, thus forming a rich and useful source for contemporary architects.
