Deffarge & Troeller
Examines the lasting impact of the work of journalist and film duo Marie-Claude Deffarge and Gordian Troeller. French-born Marie-Claude Deffarge (1924-84) and Luxembourgian Gordian Troeller (1917-2003) collaborated as freelance journalists from the 1950s until Deffarange's premature death. Initially, they reported mainly from Iran, Yemen, and other countries of the region, but later from all over the world. In the 1960s, the German weekly news magazine Stern commissioned them with major features on foreign countries. At the same time, they began their first joint film projects; from the 1970s onwards, film documentaries became the focus of their work. Deffarge & Troeller were renowned for their well-researched reportages and critical analyses of prevailing power structures. This first comprehensive book on the work of Deffarge & Troeller focuses on their Stern features and film work. It is lavishly illustrated with photos, entire features, and film previews, dummies for books, contact sheets, film stills, and scripts as well as various documents. The supplementing essays explore the duo's entire work and approach and their reception. The volume highlights what makes their journalism an essential contribution to a better understanding of current events around the globe. Deffarge & Troeller investigated and documented the roots of political conflict in Eritrea, Iran, and Yemen; they were critical of capitalism and supportive of feminism: issues of striking topicality that shape world events until today.
Lan--29 Projects
The first book on the innovative Paris-based design firm LAN. Beno簾t Jallon and Umberto Napolitano founded their Paris-based design firm LAN (Local Architecture Network) in 2002 to research architecture at the interface of several disciplines. This broad approach enables them to find new and unconventional solutions in response to social, urban, ecological, and functional challenges. Their designs include a vast range of typologies and functions at various scales. They have realized buildings in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia, and are also pursuing projects in the Middle East and Japan. In addition to their award-winning structures, Jallon and Napolitano have earned wide acclaim as well for their research work and the two previous books originating from it: Paris Haussmann and Napoli Super Modern. LAN--29 Projects is the firm's first monograph, featuring twenty-nine key designs to date through photographs, model photos, drawings, and plans, supplemented by concise texts.
Colonial--Switzerland’s Global Entanglements
A timely investigation into Switzerland's colonial history. Switzerland has been globally connected and entangled with colonies established by seafaring European nations in Africa, the Americas, and Asia since the sixteenth century. colonial--Switzerland's Global Entanglements offers a timely overview of this topical matter, placing a wide range of issues in a historical context and addressing questions of colonial continuities. Contributions by distinguished scholars and experts from various disciplines investigate questions such as the involvement of Swiss companies in the trade with enslaved people and Swiss mercenaries in the service of colonial powers, the colonial legacy of the country's missionary societies, and the research and collection of artifacts by Swiss scientists in former colonies. Light is also shed on the involvement of anthropological institutes at the universities of Zurich and Geneva in scientific racism. Conceived as an illustrated reader, this volume is both an invitation and a stimulus to explore and engage critically with Switzerland's history of global interdependence.
A House to Live with
Examines sixteen residential buildings designed by Dom Hans van der Laan and his students for the first time. Today, Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-91) is something of a cult figure of European post-World War II architecture. The Dutch Benedictine monk and architect dedicated his life to the search for fundamental principles of architecture, and his thoughts on numerical relationships and dimensional systems were highly influential in mid-twentieth-century architectural theory. A House to Live With is the first book to comprehensively explore the residential buildings designed by Van der Laan and some of his students in the Ecclesiastical Architecture course in s-Hertogenbosch, which he directed between 1946 and 1973. Sixteen of them, built between 1966 and 1985, are featured in full detail through photographs and plans newly produced for this book, and analyzed with regard to their compositional and design principles. Essays examine the mathematical relationships of numbers and volumes that are fundamental to van der Laan's designs, alongside a discussion of how he was influenced by ancient Roman architecture. Light is shed also on the interplay of house and garden and house and patio, and the positioning of the one large table in the house, which to van der Laan was of key significance. Thoroughly researched and highly readable, this volume introduces Hans van der Laan's architectural ideas and housing designs in full, thus forming a rich and useful source for contemporary architects.

Pays de R礙ve
A portrait of the art and history behind the beloved Zurich restaurant Kronenhalle. Zurich's Kronenhalle restaurant is a living legend. For decades, the restaurant and adjacent bar have brought together the city's bohemians and the bourgeoisie, and 2024 marks the centenary of the likewise legendary Hulda Zumsteg (1890-1984) taking over as its landlady. Celebrities from the worlds of art, design, literature, and stage were among its regulars, and works by artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Joan Mir籀, and Pablo Picasso are naturally part of its interior. This revised edition of Pays de r礙ve explores the art at the Kronenhalle from various perspectives. Photographs offer atmospheric impressions of the brasserie, dining rooms, and bar, in daylight and at night. Literary texts turn paintings into protagonists. A complete catalog and the story of its emergence and evolution place the collection in a wider context and portray one of Zurich's most traditional restaurants against the backdrop of an extraordinary family and business history. The restaurant's enduring success is grounded in Hulda Zumsteg's leadership and in the friendships that her son Gustav Zumsteg (1915-2005) brought to Zurich. His deep appreciation of art led him to assemble the fine collection that today turns every lunch, dinner, or drink at the Kronenhalle into an encounter with classical modernism in art.
Wall as Horizon
Laurence Rasti's meditation on the lives of detainees at La Promenade penitentiary in Switzerland through photographs. Swiss artist Laurence Rasti has immersed herself with the inmates of a prison in the Swiss Canton of Neuch璽tel. At La Promenade penitentiary in the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds, she encountered lives largely characterized by precarity and exile. In conversation with detainees A., G., L., M., N., N., T., and Z.; curator and art historian Federica Martini; and migration researcher Luca Gnaedeinger, she questions a concept of imprisonment seemingly intended to punish poverty rather than crime. Rasti's artistic research is based on a collaborative approach in which the inmates themselves also take pictures using pinhole cameras and engage in transcribing interviews. The focus of Rasti's photographic investigation is on the people deprived of their freedom. Her book reflects on the correlation of prison, precarity, and migration--topics that, in the case of a prison-like La Promenade, are closely linked and of great social significance.
Markus Raetz--Zeemansbilk
A study of the meaning and materials behind Markus Raetz's famous relief series. Representing vision is a core theme in the art of Markus Raetz (1941-2020). The imitation of a binocular field of vision, which he chose for "Zeemansblik," is as simple as it is convincing. Raetz created more than twenty versions of this relief, made of painted and later a polished zinc sheet, in various dimensions. The Dutch term zeemansblik can be translated as a sailor's view of the sea, yet blik in Dutch also means "sheet metal." Raetz's wordplay refers objectively to the material and at the same time invites an interpretation to view the horizontal fold in the plate as a sea horizon. Light reflections on the curved blank material change with the viewer's moving point of view, suggesting changing weather. A simple, abstract object on the wall thus becomes a seascape without painting, with the longing motif of looking into a blue distance. In this book, art historian Franz M羹ller explores the complexity behind the apparent simplicity of Raetz's "Zeemansblik," highlighting what makes the relief a landmark of Swiss art.

Market and Monastery
In the established historiography of trade in Asia, the emergence of Western trading empires invariably triggered the decline and dispersal of old trading networks. In this transregional ethnographic history of the Manangi, a Buddhist trading community from northern Nepal, Prista Ratanapruck provides counter evidence, elucidating how kinship, social, and religious institutions have facilitated the expansion of Manangi trade across South and Southeast Asia. Expounding on how social and moral values shape capital production, accumulation, and redistribution, Market and Monastery examines the entwining relationship between trade and the Manangi's pursuit of social and spiritual aspirations, ultimately illuminating an intriguing form of capitalism.

John Woodroffe (Napper)
About twenty years ago, I began to learn how DNA has characteristics that connect me to my ancestors. It felt like I had received an eternal gift from my people who lived thousands of years ago. We are, in part, a result of our upbringing, environment, culture, and much more. However, my belief about DNA is that within those threads of deoxyribonucleic acid are also echoes of ancient ancestors' character and a life force that cannot be charted. It spurred me on to know more about my Grandfather John. Grandfather John was a man of mystery. Born in England 1888, he suffered the death of his father when he was 5 and the death of his mother at age 16. He then disappeared from the United Kingdom records. I knew him as my mother's father who had held me close. A quiet man of high moral character, John worked as a Meter Reader for Northwestern Utilities in Edmonton, Alberta, a difficult job for a man who suffered chronic pain. He had been wounded at the WWI battle of Passchendaele. John Woodroffe died when I was 3. I wanted to know more about him. So began my research into a man who became more mysterious as each government record was revealed. My curiosity rose when I read the marriage certificate to his first wife, Agnes Mothersole, and compared it to the certificate of marriage to his second wife (sister of his first wife). The name of his father and mother conflicted with that of the first marriage certificate. And there was no John Woodroffe, born May 1888, in the Ancestry.co.uk census records. My mother and her siblings had no answers to my questions. I had hit a brick wall. I had nearly given up until an unknown cousin, Kevin Woodroffe, arrived in Edmonton from England. He reported that he was the Grandson of Don Woodroffe - my mother's brother. Kevin had begun a family search project. He had known nothing about his Canadian relatives. His enthusiasm for genealogy reignited my quest to resume my battle with the brick wall. Kevin and I continued to work together, he in England and me in Alberta. It took another year to break down the first wall. What I discovered sent my Woodroffe relatives into a tailspin. They are not "Woodroffe's." Our discovery did shed light on what was behind that brick wall. More questions hounded us. However, another wall appeared - silence from John's distant relatives in England. That wall is waiting for another generation to knock it down. Aside from discovering the names of our ancestors going back to the 1500's, we have learned about occupations, illnesses, war medals, and the tenacity of the men and women for the past five hundred years. Kevin and I went a step further in adding interest to this book. Many of John's descendants have written their biography. These stories are the heart and soul of this book. The brave ones shared stories of surviving their troubled youth. Many recount hard work mixed with personal accomplishments and fun. Another near-death story describes working in the far northern arctic for a few years that required survival skills daily and stubborn determination. Each story is from a descendant of John Woodroffe who once stood in Belgium's muddy battlefield, in agony and bleeding, but determined to never give up. I'm so grateful for that hidden message from Grandfather John's DNA. Never bloody give up!

Again I Hear These Waters
The 'Miyah' community of the Northeast Indian state of Assam is formed from the descendants of migrant Bengali-Muslims living in the chars (low-lying islands prone to floods and erosion). Very rarely do we see translations of literature from India's Northeast, a contested region seen as 'off the map' of India proper, or from the hundreds of languages which are not official at either the national or state level. In poetry and song originally written mostly in Assamese or local dialects spoken by the community, over twenty voices are brought together in this anthology to document deeply intimate stories of nature, loss, and yearning, foregrounding these contemporary lives beyond mere victimisation. From folk river-songs as poems to love poetry, the islands and riverbanks of the chars and chaporis of the Brahmaputra River become both background and metaphor in this anthology, never shying away from the prismatic effect of water. Curated by Shalim M. Hussain, a leading figure in the Miyah poetry movement, Again I Hear These Waters is an offering, a gathering.

Gender Perspectives in Indian Context
Today gender studies as an interdisciplinary academic field has gained much momentum in India. Contrary to conventional idea that a person born either as a boy or a girl must conform to his or her sex in his or her growth, dress and behaviour, modern Indian outlook have rather started changing with fast approaching new gender free world crowded with agender, bigender, genderfluid, genderqueer, non-binary and third gender people against conventional gender binary- male and female. Last few years, apart from schemes for women's security and empowerment, had also seen the announcement of many welfare schemes for the health and well-being of third gender people of India and decriminalisation of homosexuality from Indian soil. With same spirit, the present anthology is an endeavour to shed some light on the glaring issues of rape, abuse, discrimination, exploitation and violence arising out of gender essentialism in Indian context. The anthology, with an aim to serving larger sections of humanity, covers twenty one multidisciplinary articles hardly missing any aspect untouched from this field of study in Indian context.

As a whole, the book may serve as storehouse of materials for students, scholars and researchers alike.
Versailles from the Sky
Versailles seen from the sky is dreamlike. First to experience this remarkable sight on September 19, 1783, were three passengers aboard the world's first hot-air balloon flight: a sheep, a duck, and a chicken. These animals rose up into the sky in front of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, making Versailles a pioneering location in the conquest of the air.In the twenty-first century, the advent of drone cameras makes it possible to capture an infinity of new perspectives from the air. Versailles is particularly beautiful when seen from above, and the stunning images in this volume reveal the ingenious geometry of its different spaces, while also offering a panoramic view of the estate in all its immensity. The classical gardens lend themselves well to aerial views: the Grande Perspective, the fountains, the intricate parterres, many of which were plotted out on architectural plans. The wooded groves seem to take on new forms: the Domes, Colonnade, and Obelisk groves resemble watch faces on which the channels that feed the fountains mark out the time; the Chestnut Grove shrouded in snow assumes the shape of a violin; the Grand Canal at sunset becomes a glowing ribbon. Versailles from the Sky is perfect for anyone who loves Versailles. It is also for anyone who would love to take a trip through the four seasons; a journey that a bird's-eye view of Versailles encapsulates beautifully.

Defrosted
DEFROSTED IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN NEW YORKERS THAW OUT IN FLORIDA. DEFROSTED, BECAUSE THE WORLD IS MORE STRESSFUL THAN EVER. SO, KICK BACK AND RELAX WITH WHAT FEELS LIKE LONG-LOST FRIENDS! My name is Paul Rashid. I am a board-certified psychiatrist of Lebanese American descent, born and raised in West Virginia. During my extensive training and ongoing education, I've come to realize the therapeutic benefits of engaging in the arts and creative activities, which can significantly reduce mental stress and improve overall health. Working as a psychiatrist can be emotionally draining, as emotions are contagious. Consequently, I prioritize the maintenance of my mental and physical well-being by incorporating daily exercise, consuming organic whole foods whenever possible, and ensuring I get a full 8 hours of sleep each night. This commitment is essential as I strive to perform at my highest level every day, providing the best care possible to each of my patients. One of the activities that replenishes my internal reserves is writing. Through this passion, I've embarked on the creation of the P2 Comics Universe, a venture that is not only enjoyable but also holds great personal meaning. To promote the therapeutic value of the arts, I've coined a motto, "Anxiety-N-2-Arts."Those who knew me during my childhood would attest to my somewhat quirky and unique nature. I have always had a deep love for television and movies. In my youth, I often imitated Jim Carrey and even adopted the persona of Kramer from Seinfeld during my high school years, earning me that nickname for several years. Then, on a random day in January 2023, I sat down and started writing. It was a parody of Seinfeld, reminiscent of the parodies Mad Magazine has offered for various television shows and movies over the years. My familiarity with these characters allowed me to enter a state of complete creative flow, making it the most enjoyable writing experience I've ever had. Remarkably, within just three days, I had completed the entire script for the first issue. My next challenge was to find the right artist. DEFROSTED required a skilled character artist with a deep understanding of comic books. Fate smiled upon me, as with a single social media post, I connected with five talented artists. One of them, Miguel Galindo, quickly stood out. With over a decade of experience in comics and a knack for cartooning, Miguel's talents perfectly complemented the project. Furthermore, he shared the same love for the original sitcom as I did.Miguel's exceptional talent has even earned him the prestigious Mexican National Journalist Award for Caricatures and Humor. I hope that as you dive into DEFROSTED, you enjoy it as much as Miguel and I did while creating it. Cheers!
The Craft of Place
The first book on Mork-Ulnes Architects and their approach to construction in the varied landscapes of California and Norway. Mork-Ulnes Architects is an international architecture firm with offices in San Francisco and Oslo. Since its founding by Casper Mork-Ulnes in 2005, the firm has built on three continents and worked on projects at a variety of scales, from master plans and mixed-use buildings to ground-up residences and one hundred-square-foot cabins. They approach projects with both Scandinavian practicality and a Californian can-do spirit of innovation, resulting in buildings that are characterized by both playfulness and restraint. Severn Sound
In the summer of 1932, Cincinnati Reds Manager Dan Howley sent his star slugger, Chick Hafey, to recuperate from a nasty bout of influenza and to escape a brutal Midwest heatwave. Hafey and his wife Bernice traveled to Port McNicoll, Ontario, a Great Lakes grain, passenger, and freight shipping hub. The Hafeys stayed at the home of Jim Shaw, an old fishing buddy of Howley's from his days managing the minor league Toronto Maple Leafs. In the two weeks Hafey spent in the small Georgian Bay town, he rediscovered his health, and went on to play in more games over the next two seasons than he did at any other point in his career. Readers' praise of D.M. Fox's first book, On Account of Darkness: the Summer Ontario Baseball Broke the Colour Barrier: "A well-researched piece of literature that uses a reporting technique of newspaper clippings and interviews to recount the story of the 1934 all-Ontario Baseball final series between the Penetanguishene Spencer Foundry Rangers and the Chatham All-Stars in a 2 out-of-3 series of games. A must-read for any baseball fan!" RTAP, Vancouver Island "Doug did an amazing job telling this story. He was thorough and thoughtful in the way he recounted this historic time period. His work is factually based and very well researched. This is a must read for any baseball buff in North America" Brent Cardy, Ontario
Revisioning a Pentecostal Theology of Water Baptism
In this monograph, Ed George constructs a Pentecostal theology of water baptism. He first explores what Pentecostal scholars and prominent Pentecostal leaders have written concerning water baptism, then offers a careful reading of the early Pentecostal periodical materials. George continues with a study of the biblical text, offering a literary/narrative reading of Matthew and Romans.Having examined the Pentecostal perspectives and practices on water baptism and the biblical perspectives from Matthew and Romans, George constructs a Pentecostal theology of water baptism. He addresses in detail those issues that are judged to be especially important to Pentecostals, engaging with key Pentecostal voices, the biblical witness, and non-Pentecostal assessments of the relationship between the Triune God, embodied persons, and mediated learning in an attempt to hear the voice of the Spirit leading forward.George proposes a integrative Pentecostal way of thinking about and practicing water baptism that explains how water baptism 'narrates' us into the Pentecostal story, guiding us into and along the via salutis and is informed by the heart of the Pentecostal tradition. He suggests an understanding of water baptism as a divinely mediated learning rite of incorporation into the eschatological community. Edward D. George, Jr., earned the PhD from Bangor University, Wales.
