Are We There Yet
The poems in Jacob Chapman's Are We There Yet with verve explore the paradoxical world we live in. Familiar landscapes made brilliantly unfamiliar. Unfamiliar people made meaningfully familiar. To be with these poems is to open oneself up to the great depths of feeling and thinking that a substantive engagement with paradox can reveal. The poems in Are We There Yet point to something vital and expansive about the strangeness we live in - "So thanks for the triangles. / I didn't know what to do with them/ at first, but now I do." These poems are patient and playful. They are perceptive and poignant. Read these poems and then read them again. -Emily Pettit, author of Goat in the Snow and Blue Flame

A HISTORY OF AVIATION IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR The St. John's Airport near the town of Torbay, originally Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Station Torbay, was built as a military aerodrome in 1941. As the Second World War escalated, concerns were raised about the safety and protection of Newfoundland, and how those concerns impacted North America. As the United States were building bases on the colony, Canada determined the need for an RCAF station near the capital. U-boat activity around Newfoundland highlighted the hazards of crossing the Atlantic and pushed the need for a Canadian airbase. St. John's Airport near the town of Torbay, which later came to be called RCAF Station Torbay, was built as a military aerodrome in 1941. At this time Newfoundland and Labrador was not a part of Canada but was administered by a Commission of Government under the chairmanship of the Governor of Newfoundland, Admiral Sir Humphrey Walwyn, who was appointed by the Government of Great Britain. With the outbreak of war in 1939, Canada was immediately concerned with the defence of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Way of Peace
Spiritual meditation is the pathway to Divinity. It is the mystic ladder which reaches from earth to heaven, from error to Truth, from pain to peace. Every saint has climbed it; every sinner must sooner or later come to it, and every weary pilgrim that turns his back upon self and the world, and sets his face resolutely toward the Father's Home, must plant his feet upon its golden rounds. Without its aid you cannot grow into the divine state, the divine likeness, the divine peace, and the fadeless glories and unpolluting joys of Truth will remain hidden from you. Meditation is the intense dwelling, in thought, upon an idea or theme, with the object of thoroughly comprehending it, and whatsoever you constantly meditate upon you will not only come to understand, but will grow more and more into its likeness, for it will become incorporated into your very being, will become, in fact, your very self. If, therefore, you constantly dwell upon that which is selfish and debasing, you will ultimately become selfish and debased; if you ceaselessly think upon that which is pure and unselfish you will surely become pure and unselfish. Tell me what that is upon which you most frequently and intensely think, that to which, in your silent hours, your soul most naturally turns, and I will tell you to what place of pain or peace you are traveling, and whether you are growing into the likeness of the divine or the bestial. There is an unavoidable tendency to become literally the embodiment of that quality upon which one most constantly thinks. Let, therefore, the object of your meditation be above and not below, so that every time you revert to it in thought you will be lifted up; let it be pure and unmixed with any selfish element; so shall your heart become purified and drawn nearer to Truth, and not defiled and dragged more hopelessly into error.

The Art of the Wife and Other Stories
As the turn of the twentieth century announced widespread social and political reform, women across countries, ages, relationships, and classes were reconsidering how their lives were structured. The work of Lucia Bronder is one of the clearest answers to these questions in the American context. Writing under the pseudonym of Lilith Benda-a choice perhaps made because she was still living with her parents and writing was largely considered a profession unsuitable for women-little information is known about her other than that she was a Brooklynite of Polish-Jewish descent from a relatively prosperous family. Yet writing also indicates a familiarity with both New York's literary circles and the political debates swirling around feminism and marriage at the time. Bronder's stories appeared almost exclusively in The Smart Set under the editorship of H. L. Mencken, who was attuned to her self- doubting tendencies. "She seems to me the most cunning newcomer that has bobbed up in a year past," he wrote to poet and critic Louis Untermeyer in April 1916. "Unluckily, she is full of delusions that her stuff is very bad and it is a hard job to make her write at all." Yet her subtly humorous and biting critiques of both marriage and the vapidity of American upper classes made for a perfect addition to the magazine's roster, at times gracing its cover.
