Black Man's Kids
Twenty years after their father-known on the streets of Atlanta as Black Man, a once-revered civil rights leader-is sentenced to life in prison, his six children and their mother are still grappling with his absence. But when one of them is arrested for attempting to kill the man who sexually abused her daughter, their already-fractured world explodes into chaos. Once celebrated as a hometown hero, Black Man was condemned for a crime of passion-an act meant to protect his community from drugs and corruption. However, after the trial, the same people he fought for turned their backs on him. His name was erased. His family was left behind to bear the weight of his past-and survive without him. Now, with the media circling and the justice system once again threatening to destroy one of their own, the spotlight returns to the family no one wanted to remember. As buried secrets emerge and old wounds bleed into the present, the family must confront the truth about who their father was-and who they've become in his shadow. Black Man's Kids is a deeply emotional, powerful generational saga about betrayal, survival, redemption, and the enduring fight for truth in the aftermath of a fallen hero.

Soft Emperor
The book examines how Qatar transformed from a small Gulf state into a global player through soft power diplomacy, using media networks, sports initiatives, educational investments, and commercial partnerships instead of military force. The book argues Qatar built a "silent empire" by leveraging unconventional tools like Al Jazeera, hosting the FIFA World Cup, strategic investments, and cultural institutions to achieve international influence far exceeding its geographical size. Through ten comprehensive chapters covering soft power theory, Middle Eastern politics, economic diplomacy, national branding, sports diplomacy, knowledge-based economy, and the Qatar-Saudi crisis, the study reveals how Qatar redefined global politics by proving cultural, economic, and media influence can be more effective than traditional coercive power, positioning Qatar as a "soft emperor" in the modern international system.

The release of a genetically engineered pathogen, Omega Xylophia-9.11.13, wipes out much of the population, leaving survivors with unusual heterochromatic eyes and a range of new abilities. As society rebuilds, those born with extraordinary powers-botanical manipulation, enhanced intellect, and telekinesis-become crucial to its survival. But harsh laws and oppressive regimes force a quarter of the population to become wanderers, known as the "Vagary."In this new, dystopian world, the fight for freedom, survival, and power has only just begun.

The Wild Canary
The wild canary, officially known as the goldfinch, has lived in my heart since early childhood. I have layers and layers of fond memories of these beauties flocking, dipping and diving to feast in our corn fields every autumn. In the summertime, while nesting, they were splendid residents in our meadows where they would perch and serenade us from atop the purple thistles that abounded there. Today, they adorn our bird feeders with their brilliant color in harmony with the cardinals, oriels and wrens. I love them all, but find the wild canary speaks ever so eloquently to the child that exists in us all.
Bourgeois Coldness
'Bourgeois coldness refers to an affective strategy that offers an explanation for how self-preservation works. Bourgeois coldness is one of the most advanced affective and aesthetic forms of preserving the structure of the colonial status quo. It creates an affective shelter in the world, unencroached upon by the immediate consequences of its many catastrophes. It functions like air conditioning - a complex technology which reliably stabilises the climate until those inside consider it natural. Bourgeois spaces - institutional and affective - stay cool and pleasant. But outside it's burning.' - Henrike Kohpeiss Canonical critical theory by Adorno and Horkheimer enters a dialogue with Black studies through Hartman and Moten. 'Foregrounding affect, this timely book provides an inestimable philosophical argument for the centrality of Blackness in critical examinations of capitalism's violence.' -Denise Ferreira da Silva 'Elegant and erudite in equal measure, this book will stand as a landmark diagnosis of the practices of denial in our time.' -Andreas Malm

Truman's Friends
Do you enjoy reading about history, experiencing poetry, or analyzing political commentary? Do you want to relive a great love story? This book may be for you! Great historic photos too! Truman's Friends is the enduring saga about what could be termed the "eternal" love between Mary Paxton an Independence socialite, journalist, and Charlie Ross, a professor, journalist, and eventually Press Secretary to Harry S Truman. While Mary and Charlie did not have a close relationship during High School, love blossomed at the University of Missouri in Columbia. They may have been dating before Mary became a journalism student. Charlie, at 23, was one of the first professors of Journalism in the United States and Mary's mentor. Secretly engaged, they hoped to protect Charlie. When Mary graduated in 1910, as the first female journalism student, she was offered a job as a reporter at the Kansas City Post. It was an exciting time for her. Meanwhile back at MU, Charlie missed Mary and asked her to leave her job. They planned to be married in 1911. Marriage plans failed because of Charlie's family who demanded him to support six sisters and a mother. He could not also support a spouse. This sent Mary into a terrible dungeon. While Mary was experiencing a mental and physical breakdown, Charlie quickly married Florence in 1913, a young coed at MU and became the father of two children. Charlie was on his way to wealth and notoriety. Mary's breakdown lasted for at least two years. Rambling from job to job until 1918, she finally volunteered to become a Canteen girl in France during WWI. While in France, she kept a fascinating diary. Upon the return to the United States in 1919, a war-torn Mary, unexpectedly married Mike, a farmer and they soon had one child. Very early in their marriage, Mike became mentally ill, violent, and unable to cope with life because of an inherited kidney disease. This sent Mary into another black hole where she became very sick. Her father urged her to return to college and obtain a master's degree. In the same year that her father died, she graduated from MU, and Mike passed away. During her years as professor of journalism at Christian College, now Columbia College, she wrote to Charlie and they met occasionally. They expressed their love for each other, but Charlie could not divorce Florence probably because she was Roman Catholic. The divorce would have harmed both of Mary's and Charlie's careers. Mary continued writing and created love sonnets to be given to Charlie at her death. Ironically, Charlie passed away 36 years before Mary, who eventually lived to be 100 years old. During their lives Mary wrote several books, plays, magazine articles and more. Charlie advanced his career with the Saint Louis Post Dispatch and became a national influencer. He had his own syndicated byline, "The Washington Letter." When Harry S Truman took over the White House in 1945, he named Charlie as his first Press Secretary. Mary knew her students well. Later in life she wrote, "I see so many college graduates, who never read a book after they take off their cap and gown. In fact, of all the women I know, and they are people I like and even love, have no intellectual curiosity. Something a college teacher only encounters once every few years." Learning was also one of the things that kept Mary alive so long. "When you quit wanting to learn things, you are dead, and might as well be buried, except there is a law against burying people who are physically alive, but dead mentally. Intellectual curiosity is something rare, and when a teacher finds a student who possesses it, that is a great day." Truman's Friends tells their love story and remembers their famous writings and influence on the United States, the world, and particularly Columbia, Missouri.
Rural Vision
The first book on rural architecture firm Christoph Hesse Architects. Christoph Hesse Architects is based in Berlin and Korbach, a small town in the northwestern part of the German federal state of Hesse. This rural area in the green heart of Germany is the location of most of the projects the firm has realized since its establishment in 2010, though occasionally, they do plant their rural concepts into an urban context. Christoph Hesse Architects and their friends see their designs as open places of culture. On the one hand, they are catalysts for change in thought, intended to change people's perspectives and stimulate self-efficacy in society. On the other hand, they are actual interventions in globally prevailing structures that can be disrupted and changed locally. Thus, the firm distinguishes between projects acting as perspective changes and as system changers. Rural Vision is the first monograph on Christoph Hesse Architects. It also constitutes a manifesto that illustrates how collaborative projects create social, ecological, and economic points of contact and dialogue. Moreover, they promote sustainable change that not only improves lives in rural areas but also redefines change as a source of innovation and social progress. The book offers alternative strategies based on selected projects through photos, visualizations, drawings, and plans, as well as essays and conversations.

The Appian Way
Uncovers scenographer Adolphe Appia's forgotten architectural influence. Adolphe Appia (1862-1928) is a prominent figure in the history of modern theater, best known for his writings on the mise-en-sc癡ne and stage design for the operas of Richard Wagner. Far less is known about the Swiss scenographer's importance in twentieth-century architecture and aesthetics. The Appian Way is the definitive account of Appia's significance in this field. It is centered on his remarkable drawings that are at once austere and atmospheric: framing a series of scenes capturing stairs, landings, platforms, and terraces, all staged before a distant horizon under a luminous sky, the drawings are generally monochrome, but the subtle hues of the paper imbue each with a distinctive, ambient undertone. Appia himself might be thought about in the same way; he was distant yet also enigmatically present in the ensuing drama of modern architecture and stage design. Comprised of four main chapters and a coda, this engaging and accessible book is structured as a dramatic story that traces the contours of Appia's life--his personal circumstances, convictions, aesthetic preferences, desires, and motivations--all aimed at constructing a comprehensive portrayal of his life and his work, within the horizons of his time. Appia's drawings are reproduced here in full color, accompanied by a vast range of archival material, much of which has never been published.

Buildings for People and Plants by WORKac is a thoughtfully curated architectural exploration by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood, the New York-based design firm's co-founders. It also includes a conversation with the two architects, conducted by the Orange County Museum of Art's director Heidi Zuckerman, a critical essay by architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff, and an appendix with detailed information on the featured projects round out this volume. Teruko Yokoi
A study of the abstract paintings of Japanese-Swiss painter Teruko Yokoi. The work of Japanese-Swiss painter Teruko Yokoi (1924-2020) is characterized by unflagging creative energy and constant evolution. In Teruko Yokoi, art historian Kuniko Satonobu Spirig, who is also of Japanese origin, analyzes and explains cultural and biographical relations in Yokoi's art, as well as the influences of abstract expressionism on her painting technique. Raised in the city of Tsushima on the Japanese island of the same name, Yokoi moved to Tokyo in 1949, where she attended the private Joshibi University of Art and Design. In 1954, she moved to the United States, where she completed her education at the San Francisco Art Institute and with painters Hans Hofmann and Julian E. Levi in New York. There she met artists such as Sam Francis, whom she married in 1959, Mark Rothko, and Kenzo Okada. In this environment, she drew new energy and began to develop her own style of abstraction and invent her own idiom. In 1962, she moved to Switzerland, where she lived and worked tirelessly in the city of Bern until her death. Teruko Yokoi takes an in-depth look at her painting methods and her vocabulary of abstraction, which was formulated over the course of a long artistic career.

Tent Living
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a tiny one-room home? To live off-the-grid, without electricity and without plumbing? To live comfortably in the woods, surrounded by wildlife, where you wake up every morning to the sound of song birds? And to do it all on a tight budget, without having to spend weeks and months building an elaborate structure. Tent Living is a chronicle of one man's life in a 12' x 14' canvas wall tent. For three years, David Shilling lived in a tent in the woods of rural Virginia. This book chronicles his entire three-year experience. You'll find practical tips on all aspects of long-term tent living including downsizing, finding land, staying comfortable throughout the seasons, and living without electricity and plumbing. You'll learn how to build a tent platform and fashion a rain fly that keeps you high and dry. How to install a wood stove that keeps you warm in the winter. And how to set up a comfortable "tent bathroom" with a wash basin, water pot, dump sink, drywell and composting toilet. If you've ever thought about living in a tent, then this book is for you. Or maybe you like the idea of setting up a luxury tent as a guest cottage, or as a backyard getaway, or maybe as an art studio. If so, then this book will show you how to do it quickly and cheaply. Tent Living is also a memoir of the author's spiritual journey as he discovers the true meaning of simple living. How he adjusts to the hardships of tent living and eventually finds peace and contentment in the woods. But there are struggles along the way, too. Struggles with neighbors, struggles with county officials, and most importantly, struggles within himself. Living outside the norm can be difficult. But it can also open your eyes to the world around you, and help you find your place in it all.

Chestnut Odyssey
Preface Tells the story of the Gypsy (Dom) people in Iraq centuries ago. They would travel between cities and villages, peacefully, with no political ambitions or demands for social rights. Their limitless freedom was enough for them to practice their rituals and customs of dancing, singing, and music, which brought joy and happiness to the people living near them. In addition, they practiced some handicrafts, such as making daggers and knives, crafting gold teeth, fortune-telling, and tattooing women's faces and other parts of their bodies. The former Saddam Hussein regime deliberately attempted to alter their demographic nature. It sought to gather them into residential complexes spread across Baghdad and several governorates. This changed the nature of their lives, which had been based on travel and roaming, and facilitated repeated attacks against them. The novel's characters each speak from their perspective about the crime of the brutal murder of the young Gypsy woman, Ghusoun, by her ex-husband, Jassim. He was deeply infatuated with her and deserted his military unit during the Iraq-Iran War to marry her. He lived with her in her father's house in one of the Gypsy complexes. However, he left her after the war ended in 1988, bitter and despairing over her refusal to abandon her family's customs of dancing and singing, considering it a betrayal. He harbored resentment towards her, and his opportunity for revenge came after the collapse of systems and the absence of law post-2003, when chaos engulfed the country. He then led the crowds who came out with a fatwa from religious scholars to eradicate the Gypsies, targeting her house and ultimately taking her life. What exacerbated the barbaric attack on the Gypsies was the absence of any supporters for them in that ordeal, unlike other components that faced terrorism, such as the Yazidis, Christians, and Feyli Kurds. The media abandoned its support and assistance, and judicial institutions preferred silence and refrained from defending them. There was not even moral solidarity from public opinion, due to the derogatory view clinging to their being by the conservative tribal and religious society. Nahi Al-AmiriAuthor

Nationalism, National Identity and Conflict in Southeast Europe
Looking into the intricate relationship between nationalism, national identity, and conflict, this book offers a comparative approach to understanding the enduring tensions in Southeast Europe. Alexis Heraclides examines the complex dynamics of five nations - Albanians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Macedonians, and Turks - and four key axis of conflicts: Greece and Turkey, Greece and Macedonia, Bulgaria and Macedonia, and Greece and Albania.Through in-depth analysis, the Heraclides explores how historical narratives and the denial of other's identities fuel protracted rivalry and hinder conflict resolution in the region.
