Out of the Shadows
The beautiful Anglo-Italian artist Maria Cosway was one of the most talented and dynamic women active in Regency England, but one whose achievements have been largely overlooked. Born in Florence in 1760, she was acclaimed at an early age as both a painter and a musician. She exhibited forty-one paintings at the Royal Academy summer exhibition between 1781 and 1801, and hosted regular musical soir矇es at the Pall Mall house she shared with her husband, Richard Cosway. They were attended by the political and cultural elite of London. Maria's extraordinary network of connections to the great and the good of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, included friendships with, among others, Thomas Jefferson, the Prince of Wales, Pasquale Paoli, the artist Jacques-Louis David, the opera singer Luigi Marchesi, the Duchess of Devonshire, the actress and writer Mary Robinson, and members of the Bonaparte family. Estranged from her husband by 1801, Maria Cosway largely gave up painting and reinvented herself as a progressive educator, founding schools for young women: first in Lyon, later in Lodi, Italy. In recognition of her achievements at Lodi, the Emperor of Austria made her a baroness.
The Painter and the Museum
J籀zsef Nemes Lamp矇rth (1891-1924) was a key figure in the avantgarde art movements that emerged in the early twentieth century. The fact that no comprehensive exhibition of modern Hungarian art could open today without featuring at least one of his works is a clear indication of the calibre and far-reaching impact of his artistic output. Although he died at the tragically young age of just thirty-three, leaving behind him a regrettably small oeuvre, there can be no doubt as to his significance and his influence on both his contemporaries and later Hungarian art.
The House of Doctor Koolhaas
Investigates the history of the Villa dall'Ava in the playful style of a detective novel. Gumshoe is a new series of architectural books that introduces an original approach to the writing of architectural history. It returns the focus of architectural discourse back onto buildings in a style and form that is fresh and scholarly but also easy and enjoyable to read. It emulates the detective novel--a form of writing beloved by many, but also one that has enjoyed a parallel academic life in disciplines and by writers in fields as diverse as psychoanalysis (Sigmund Freud), film (Sigfried Kracauer), and art history (Carlo Ginzburg)--but, significantly, not yet by architecture. Each volume will investigate a singular building as if it were a mystery waiting to be solved. Written by distinguished French architectural critic and historian Fran癟oise Fromonot, the first case--The House of Doctor Koolhaas--is about the Villa dall'Ava, a private residence in Saint-Cloud, a suburb of Paris. Fromonot brilliantly unpicks, explains, and interprets this very first building completed by Rem Koolhaas, who is universally regarded as the world's most celebrated architect, and his Rotterdam-based firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture. The house is resolutely part of a modern architectural canon, but until now has not been the focus of a dedicated book or analysis.
The wildfire risk management in buildings
Despite increasing investments in wildfire management, the occurrence of larger and more intense wildfires has become more frequent. Consequently, the impact on infrastructure located in high-risk areas has led to dramatic situations, involving the destruction of assets with significant economic and social value and, in extreme cases, the loss of human lives. This work aims to share technical and scientific knowledge on the most effective ways to manage wildfire risk in buildings, specifically dwellings. Three essential components are considered - the building itself, its surroundings, and self-protection capacity. These are examined in relation to current legislation and policies in Portugal. The content will be of primary interest to both technical and non-technical professionals involved in wildland-urban interface fire management, as well as to the general public, especially to citizens with buildings located in fire-prone areas.
Sarah and Jacob
In this work of pure imagination, the author immerses us in a series of captivating chronicles that span from 1680 to 1837, blending history and fiction with remarkable fi nesse. At the heart of these narratives stands Adam Coeuret, a man mysteriously spared from the galleys by Royal Grace in 1672, who becomes the common thread of a plot that probes the justice system of his time and its many ambiguities. Through his fate, the author explores the darker corners of judicial machinery-where sentencing, escapes, and unearned freedoms intertwine. But Adam's destiny, as murky as it is strange, takes an unexpected turn after the Affair of the Poisons, with revelations about his possible future that reshape how his era is perceived. Through a mosaic of chronicles, characters like Sarah, Jacob, Martha, and George cross paths in increasingly complex situations: a disturbed magician, gambling games in 1807, long-held secrets unveiled in Biarritz in 1837. In each era, the thread of injustice is woven-between lies and hidden truths. A journey through centuries where justice, power, and madness intertwine, shedding light on the failures of a system sometimes too eager to shield the guilty. Page after page, the reader is invited to refl ect on the persistence of injustice, from the time of poisons to the present day

Preaching the Christian Life and Faith
In this volume, essays are brought together that map the preaching landscape in the late antique Latin West from the perspective of religious education. In Late Antiquity, sermons were the central institution through which religious education was imparted. Each contribution focuses on one preacher and addresses one of four key questions: What role did the Holy Scriptures play in preaching? How were hagiographic texts interpreted in the sermon? How were Christian ethics taught in sermons? And how did dogma enter the sermon? Reflections on current research into preaching and on the role of Augustine for late antique preachers round off the individual studies. Since preaching is highly dependent on its local and historical contexts, the volume collects a variety of perspectives that offering a nuanced picture of the genre of preaching that has shaped Christian communication from Late Antiquity to the present day.
Knowledge Co-Creation in Climate and Marine Governance
Climate change affects the oceans on various levels - as an eco-system, as a storage for CO2, as a source of life, as a threat to coastal communities. For this reason, the UN sustainability goal 14 focuses on the protection of life at sea. The authors of this volume explore the transformative potential of co-creative processes in environmental and climate law, looking at rights of the sea, and on sea. The innovative approach of co-creation emphasises the integration of diverse forms of knowledge, encompassing scientific, indigenous, and local expertise to foster more inclusive and effective governance strategies for climate change and marine conservation, including sustainable fisheries, human rights protection and climate change adaptation. Based on a co-creation methodology that transcends disciplinary boundaries and enhances participatory approaches, this volume offers perspectives on ocean protection from national, regional and international law.

Wildlife's Second Chance
5 Star Book Review by Pikasho Deka for Readers' Favorite: If you're an animal lover seeking a deeper connection with wildlife and nature, Wildlife's Second Chance is a book you absolutely must have on your shelf. Author F. Stone sheds light on the inspiring efforts of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centers and the people leading those endeavors in Canada and the United States, with this part manual, part wildlife guide that is bound to delight nature aficionados. As injuries and illnesses tend to affect wildlife more in places near human activity, Stone provides keen insights and observations on how people can aid wildlife in these areas through helpful prevention and rehabilitation measures. As someone with rescued pets, I found the stories really encouraging and motivational. It's an enlightening and educational book about wildlife, complemented by breathtaking photographs that capture animals in their natural environment. Highly recommended. Have you ever witnessed a wild animal in distress and wondered how to help it? Wildlife's Second Chance provides information that helps you give the animal a second chance to survive. The important message here is, "Always call a wildlife rescue organization first before handling wildlife." Wildlife's Second Chance will delight readers with true wildlife rescue stories. Photographs show how the veterinarians and technicians managed the rehabilitation of birds, mammals, snakes, turtles, bats, and more. Professional photographs reveal the beauty of wild animals. Wildlife's Second Chance explains why wild animals which live close to human activity are at greater risk for injuries, poisoning, contamination and becoming orphaned. This has given rise for the need of non-profit wildlife rescue organizations. Working under strict regulations, they accept injured wildlife and rehabilitate the lucky ones to become healthy and returned to their wild home. This book salutes the volunteers who assist the non-profit wildlife rescue groups. Their sole reward is knowing they play vital roles giving injured wildlife a second chance to be healthy and free. A purpose of this book is to reveal how we can do a better job of protecting the wild animals living in our cities, towns, farms, sports, and industrial sites. Americans and Canadians value their wildlife and the wild habitats. These are at risk due to climate change and shifting environmental policies. Wildlife's Second Chance provides options on how we can ensure both remain healthy. This book will be enjoyed by the family, outdoor enthusiasts, farmers and many more. Wildlife's Second Chance will be a great addition to your reference library and/or on your coffee table.

Soft Emperor
The book examines how Qatar transformed from a small Gulf state into a global player through soft power diplomacy, using media networks, sports initiatives, educational investments, and commercial partnerships instead of military force. The book argues Qatar built a "silent empire" by leveraging unconventional tools like Al Jazeera, hosting the FIFA World Cup, strategic investments, and cultural institutions to achieve international influence far exceeding its geographical size. Through ten comprehensive chapters covering soft power theory, Middle Eastern politics, economic diplomacy, national branding, sports diplomacy, knowledge-based economy, and the Qatar-Saudi crisis, the study reveals how Qatar redefined global politics by proving cultural, economic, and media influence can be more effective than traditional coercive power, positioning Qatar as a "soft emperor" in the modern international system.

Bourgeois Coldness
'Bourgeois coldness refers to an affective strategy that offers an explanation for how self-preservation works. Bourgeois coldness is one of the most advanced affective and aesthetic forms of preserving the structure of the colonial status quo. It creates an affective shelter in the world, unencroached upon by the immediate consequences of its many catastrophes. It functions like air conditioning - a complex technology which reliably stabilises the climate until those inside consider it natural. Bourgeois spaces - institutional and affective - stay cool and pleasant. But outside it's burning.' - Henrike Kohpeiss Canonical critical theory by Adorno and Horkheimer enters a dialogue with Black studies through Hartman and Moten. 'Foregrounding affect, this timely book provides an inestimable philosophical argument for the centrality of Blackness in critical examinations of capitalism's violence.' -Denise Ferreira da Silva 'Elegant and erudite in equal measure, this book will stand as a landmark diagnosis of the practices of denial in our time.' -Andreas Malm

The Wild Canary
The wild canary, officially known as the goldfinch, has lived in my heart since early childhood. I have layers and layers of fond memories of these beauties flocking, dipping and diving to feast in our corn fields every autumn. In the summertime, while nesting, they were splendid residents in our meadows where they would perch and serenade us from atop the purple thistles that abounded there. Today, they adorn our bird feeders with their brilliant color in harmony with the cardinals, oriels and wrens. I love them all, but find the wild canary speaks ever so eloquently to the child that exists in us all.

Truman's Friends
Do you enjoy reading about history, experiencing poetry, or analyzing political commentary? Do you want to relive a great love story? This book may be for you! Great historic photos too! Truman's Friends is the enduring saga about what could be termed the "eternal" love between Mary Paxton an Independence socialite, journalist, and Charlie Ross, a professor, journalist, and eventually Press Secretary to Harry S Truman. While Mary and Charlie did not have a close relationship during High School, love blossomed at the University of Missouri in Columbia. They may have been dating before Mary became a journalism student. Charlie, at 23, was one of the first professors of Journalism in the United States and Mary's mentor. Secretly engaged, they hoped to protect Charlie. When Mary graduated in 1910, as the first female journalism student, she was offered a job as a reporter at the Kansas City Post. It was an exciting time for her. Meanwhile back at MU, Charlie missed Mary and asked her to leave her job. They planned to be married in 1911. Marriage plans failed because of Charlie's family who demanded him to support six sisters and a mother. He could not also support a spouse. This sent Mary into a terrible dungeon. While Mary was experiencing a mental and physical breakdown, Charlie quickly married Florence in 1913, a young coed at MU and became the father of two children. Charlie was on his way to wealth and notoriety. Mary's breakdown lasted for at least two years. Rambling from job to job until 1918, she finally volunteered to become a Canteen girl in France during WWI. While in France, she kept a fascinating diary. Upon the return to the United States in 1919, a war-torn Mary, unexpectedly married Mike, a farmer and they soon had one child. Very early in their marriage, Mike became mentally ill, violent, and unable to cope with life because of an inherited kidney disease. This sent Mary into another black hole where she became very sick. Her father urged her to return to college and obtain a master's degree. In the same year that her father died, she graduated from MU, and Mike passed away. During her years as professor of journalism at Christian College, now Columbia College, she wrote to Charlie and they met occasionally. They expressed their love for each other, but Charlie could not divorce Florence probably because she was Roman Catholic. The divorce would have harmed both of Mary's and Charlie's careers. Mary continued writing and created love sonnets to be given to Charlie at her death. Ironically, Charlie passed away 36 years before Mary, who eventually lived to be 100 years old. During their lives Mary wrote several books, plays, magazine articles and more. Charlie advanced his career with the Saint Louis Post Dispatch and became a national influencer. He had his own syndicated byline, "The Washington Letter." When Harry S Truman took over the White House in 1945, he named Charlie as his first Press Secretary. Mary knew her students well. Later in life she wrote, "I see so many college graduates, who never read a book after they take off their cap and gown. In fact, of all the women I know, and they are people I like and even love, have no intellectual curiosity. Something a college teacher only encounters once every few years." Learning was also one of the things that kept Mary alive so long. "When you quit wanting to learn things, you are dead, and might as well be buried, except there is a law against burying people who are physically alive, but dead mentally. Intellectual curiosity is something rare, and when a teacher finds a student who possesses it, that is a great day." Truman's Friends tells their love story and remembers their famous writings and influence on the United States, the world, and particularly Columbia, Missouri.
