The Body in Contemporary Art
The Body in Contemporary Art presents a global survey of art made since 2000 that takes the body as its focus. Examining such areas as nature and technology, identity politics, and the grotesque, writer and critic Sally O'Reilly traces the body's movement from a subject to a live medium of art, and highlights how sociopolitical and cultural developments, from contemporary scientific breakthroughs to the Russian--Ukrainian war, have all had a profound influence on representations of the human form. From painting and sculpture to installation, video art, and performance, O'Reilly reveals the myriad ways in which the body has inspired a generation of artists. Featuring the work of both renowned and up--and-coming figures, including Marina Abramovic, Hew Locke, Jenkin van Zyl, Shirin Neshat, Sarah Lucas, and Shawanda Corbett, The Body in Contemporary Art shows how the human form continues to be pivotal to our understanding and expression of our place in the universe.International in scope with color illustrations throughout, this edition has been comprehensively revised, with an updated selection of artists and five new chapters covering topics such as clothing, work and economics, the nude, and illness.
The Martins
A wryly funny story about a struggling Parisian writer who finds the heroine of his next novel right outside his apartment "Foenkinos is at his best in this playful novel" -- Elle "A charming, clever book" -- The Independent Is it true that every life is the stuff of novels? Or are some people just too ordinary? This is the question a struggling Parisian writer asks when he challenges himself to write about the first person he sees when he steps outside his apartment. Secretly hoping to meet the beautiful woman who occasionally smokes on his street, he instead sets eyes on octogenarian Madeleine. She's happy to become the subject of his project, but first she needs to put her shopping away. Is it really true, the writer wonders, that every life is the stuff of novels, or is his story doomed to be hopelessly banal? As he gets to know Madeleine and her family, he'll be privy to their secrets: lost loves, marital problems and workplace worries. And he'll soon realise he is not the impartial bystander he intended to be, but a catalyst for major changes in the lives of his characters. Told with Foenkinos's characteristic irony and self-deprecating humour, yet filled with warmth, The Martins is a compelling tale of the family next door which raises questions about what it means to be 'ordinary', and about the blurred lines between truth and fiction. Light yet profound, it's another deeply charming story by this beloved French author.

The Return of the Grey Partridge
A 2024 Book of the Year pick in The Spectator and The Times Literary Supplement The ground-breaking story of the return of nature to the Arundel Estate The Return of the Grey Partridge tells the extraordinary story of how wildlife is restored to the Arundel Estate in West Sussex. Prompted by the collapse in numbers of one species, the grey partridge of the title, the managers of the estate woke up to the devastating effect modern farming methods were having on wildlife. Following the estate through the seasons of one year, the book shows how the farm of Peppering is gradually renatured: fields are divided up with hedgerows and trees, beetle banks are built across fields, the land is manured rather than fed with artificial fertilisers, and much of it is returned to pasture. Detailed descriptions of nature give a sense of this large estate coming back to life - still very much farmland, but with a rapid increase in wildlife and biodiversity. And the partridges return. Written in collaboration with the Duke of Norfolk, owner of the Arundel Estate, this moving and hopeful account shows how modern farming can work in partnership with nature to restore not only birdlife but to benefit the whole ecosystem.

Sebasti瓊o Salgado
Black-and-white photography from all stages of Salgado's storied career, including images from his internationally acclaimed Workers and Migrations seriesBrazilian documentary photographer Sebasti瓊o Salgado is one of the greatest figures of modern photography, placing human issues and the world's upheavals at the heart of his projects. This monograph presents two distinct stages of his oeuvre, through a selection of over 400 prints held in the collection of the Maison Europ矇enne de la Photographie. First, a journey through the first 25 years of Salgado's career as a photographer and photojournalist, in which he continually confronted the fury and torment of humanity through famed series such as Workers (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world, and Migrations (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure. This chapter is followed by selections from Salgado's Genesis project (2013), an epic eight-year expedition to photograph the mountains, deserts and oceans, and the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society. These recent works are a homage to the beauty and fragility of our planet, still untouched by the madness of mankind, and which it is vital to preserve.Sebasti瓊o Salgado (born 1944) originally trained as an economist. He began his photographic career in 1973, working initially as a photojournalist before turning toward the long-term, socially oriented documentary projects for which he is well known, such as Workers, Migrations and, most recently, Genesis. A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2001, Salgado has also been involved in rainforest conservation and restoration through his organization Insituto Terra.

Horsetrader
During the boom years of the 1980s, the massed oil wealth of the princes of Dubai and Saudi Arabia were pitted against British millionaire Robert Sangster in a battle for control of one of the world's rarest, most precious and most unpredictable commodities: top-pedigree thoroughbred racehorses. From the Jockey Club to Kentucky, from Royal Ascot to Belmont Park, high society and new money celebrated a horsebreeders' bonanza as hundreds of millions of dollars were waged in the ultimate racing gamble. Horsetrader is the thrilling, compulsive story of the rise and spectacular crash of the Sport of Kings.Robert Sangster was the man responsible for the boom. Together with Irishmen Vincent O'Brien, the world's finest trainer, and stallion master John Magnier, Sangster undertook the revolutionary policy of buying 'baby' stallions - the world's most expensive yearlings. And the man who could win at this game, they decided, was the man who bought them all. They sent prices through the roof in bidding wars fought with breathtaking daring. Top stallions became worth three times their weight in gold - the breeding rights to them became a licence to print money. This book traces the gripping story of how Sangster and his little band of Irish horsemen ransacked the world's most prestigious bloodstock auction, the Keeneland Sales in Kentucky. It witnesses too the terrible crash - the bankruptcies and the ruined thoroughbred farms. Written with the full co-operation of Sangster himself, Horsetrader is the inside track on an awesome bid to corner the thoroughbred market.

My Sweet Orange Tree
A WORLDWIDE CLASSIC OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: a moving, life-affirming story of a mischevious boy from Brazil and the power of kindness and imagination. Meet Zez矇 - Brazil's naughtiest and most loveable boy, his talent for mischief matched only by his great kindness. When he grows up he wants to be a poet with a bow-tie, but for now, he entertains himself playing pranks on the residents of his family's poor Rio de Janeiro neighborhood and inventing friends to play with. Zez矇's pranks can be a little too mischievous - at least, so say his parents, who punish him harshly when he misbehaves. His father is out of work and the family unhappiness falls hardest on Zez矇, the second-youngest of seven siblings. That is, until he meets a real friend, and his life begins to change. With the help of Pinkie, the talking orange tree, Manuel, who gives Zez矇 rides in his car, and with his own endless supply of resourcefulness and imagination, Zez矇 will triumph over any adversity. This worldwide classic of children's literature has never been out of print in Brazil since it was first published in 1968. Translated into an astonishing number of languages, it has won the hearts of millions of young readers from Korea to Turkey, Poland to Thailand, and many other countries too, with its inimitable blend of the heart-rending and the whimsical.
Becoming a Composer
'Singer, composer, musician . . . Renaissance Woman of contemporary music.' - Observer I am a composer. A composer of classical music. Quite honestly I am not quite sure how that happened to a girl born in Belize and brought up in Tottenham . . . It is clear that composing found me. It crept up on me and wouldn't let me out of its grasp. Now a leading international composer and a singer-songwriter, Errollyn Wallen is as much at home in jazz and pop as in the classical world. Part memoir, Becoming a Composer offers an intriguing glimpse into the mind and motivation of a composer and covers aspects of Wallen's sometimes troubled childhood, and her experiences of growing up as a black composer in the UK. It includes a collection of observations, diaries following the progress of new works and essays and seeks to shed light on the way a composer sees and hears the world.
