Leeds a history of its tramways
2023 re-issue, fully revised and available for the first time in paperback and Kindle editions. Since the original release in 1991 I have received numerous letters advising on facts that were not available at time of first publishing, I have meticulously checked these and with the opportunity to re publish, have corrected the book to bring it up to date and ensure it is as complete and accurate as possible. Noel Proudlock, Author. 29 October 1891 was a day of major significance both for Leeds and for the development of electricity as a power source for public transport when on that day the first vehicles in Europe to receive current through a roof mounted collector from an overhead supply wire operated from Sheepscar to Oakwood, at that time the entrance to Roundhay Park. Full public service started on 10 November 1891 and was continued successfully until 31 July 1896. This book is published as my personal commemoration of the centenary of that event, a hundred years during which developments have reached a point beyond the wildest imagination of those present on the day. Leeds was a fast growing town with a great civic pride at the time the tramcar began to spread over Great Britain. No civic decisions of that time had a more profound effect on the city than the introduction of horse drawn trams by the Leeds Tramways Company in 1871, the subsequent purchase of the system by the Corporation in 1894 (the year after incorporation as a city) and its electrification from 1897 to 1902. As well as the very important event already referred to Leeds also scored firsts with the Maley combined electro-magnetic and mechanical track brake in 1907 and with trackless trams (trolley buses) in 1911. The city was also very early in the field with motor buses (1906), reserved tracks (1922), roller bearings and air brakes (1926) and modern high speed cars (1933). I have therefore attempted to produce a compact history of the city's street rail transport, not ignoring the growth of the buses which ultimately replaced the trams in 1959, and to relate it to the general history of the city, especially to housing development on which the early electric tram system had a profound effect. A very different picture is to be seen in many European cities where the principles recommended for Leeds in 1944-50 were adopted and very modern rail systems have developed. There is now increasing interest in similar new developments in America and Great Britain and it seems a pity that Leeds missed the opportunity to repeat its great pioneering role of 1897-1906. In piecing together during 1968 that part of the story up to 1940 which I did not witness personally I have examined the Annual Reports of the Tramways and later Transport Committee to the Leeds City Council and various other volumes in the Local History Section of Leeds Public Library and must acknowledge the help of the staff in that section at the time in bringing out and putting away so many heavy volumes. I must also particularly acknowledge the assistance afforded at the same period by Mr. J. R. Blakeborough in allowing me to examine the tramcar records retained by Leeds City Transport as well as the photographs and negatives in their possession. Prints of some of these and also some from the Yorkshire Post and Leeds City Library collections are included and I acknowledge their courtesy in giving permission for their reproduction.

She quickly becomes a favorite of the Emperor and rises through the ranks to become one of the most powerful women in the palace. But this power is not easy to hold continuously. Even after brutal politics, Ko-Lin is still the most powerful woman! But, How? The novel is notable for its vivid descriptions of life in the Forbidden City, the imperial palace in Beijing, and for its portrayal of the intricate and often brutal politics of the Chinese court. Loti and Gautier's writing is characterized by their attention to detail and their ability to evoke a sense of time and place. Today, the novel is still read as a classic of French literature and provides an interesting window into the cultural and political climate of turn-of-the-century France.

Organon of Homoeopathic Medicine
Samuel Hahnemann was a German physician who created and introduced homeopathy, a system of alternative medicine which claims that a substance which causes diseases in some individuals can cure it in others.Writing in the early 19th century, Hahnemann set out the principles of homoeopathic medicine in a total of 297 aphorisms. Each of these discussed the various attributes of healing that underpin homeopathy as a method of curing. The notion of 'miasms' as the origin and cause of all chronic disease, and how such can be alleviated, is elaborated upon by the author.Today, homeopathy has been widely discredited, with its methodology and teachings contrasted with established discoveries in biology and chemistry. Numerous studies of homeopathy's efficacy have shown that the results of treatment are no better than placebo. In the 19th century however, its use was popular with Hahnemann himself contrasting his methods by terming conventional medicine 'allopathic'.This edition combines side-by-side two editions of the Organon; the fifth, translated in late 19th century by R. E. Dudgeon, and the sixth, translated in 1922 by William Boericke. Both translators were practising homeopaths who added their own discoveries and annotations to Hahnemann's principle text.

After-Jena
'After-Jena: A Symphonic Poem' is in four parts and is named after the small university town in Germany that, at the end of the C18th and early C19th, saw the emergence of early Romanticism and Idealism in a revolutionary ethos that included the arts, sciences and politics. A central figure to this was Caroline Bohmer-Schlegel-Schelling, an extraordinary woman, who was also a key figure in the translation of Shakespeare into German. Gathered around her were an astonishing array of talent, including Fichte, Schiller, Goethe, William and Friedrich Schlegel, Novalis, Schelling and Holderlin. In that milieu the notion of non-duality became central in a view of the world as essentially dynamic and emergent, and of the essential oneness of poetry and philosophy as well as of poetry and science, as understood by Goethe and evident in the recasting of his treatise on the 'Metamorphosis of Plants' as a poem. Humans were seen as a part of the natural world not apart from it. This orientation is apparent in the works of Holderlin, and subsequently the works of Heidegger and Paul Celan. Indeed, even Schelling considered writing his philosophical works as poems, inspired as he was by Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. Their view and approach to creativity saw a radical break from the dominant dualistic and absolutist ideology of the day, something which has subsequently been lost. Non-duality was a key notion, and is shared with Taoism in China, Dzogchen in Tibet, as well as being evident among certain of the Pre-Socratic philosopher-poets of Ancient Greece. This poem, 'After-Jena' relates to our cataclysmic times from this perspective - rehearsing key themes of 'home' and 'homelessness', 'refuge' and 'estrangement' or 'alienation'. It ranges across Eastern Europe, Mongolia, Tibet, England in the Medieval period and English Romanticism, among other themes that are developed and varied as the poem unfolds on the destitution of our times and the shrinking hope of salvation that still just about remains alive. It is a poem of enormous scope, depth and ambition. A poem for our age.

Lasting Differences
Students' course grades matter. Research studies show that students' grades are more predictive than test scores of their future academic success, including high school and post-secondary outcomes. Yet nationally and within Chicago Public Schools (CPS), boys' grades are consistently lower than girls' grades. CPS leaders and educators want to meet their goal of "Bs or better" and strong educational outcomes for all students, and they are in conversation about how they're supporting boys.This study aims to provide insights into this difference in boys' and girls' grades in Chicago by looking first at one grade level and one subject area-ninth-grade math (algebra and geometry)-using two school years of data, 2016-17 and 2017-18. Our findings are specific to math students in these years, and also suggest what may (and may not) be driving differences in other grades and subjects.
