'After-Jena: A Symphonic Poem' is in four parts and is named after the small university town in Germany that, at the end of the C18th and early C19th, saw the emergence of early Romanticism and Idealism in a revolutionary ethos that included the arts, sciences and politics. A central figure to this was Caroline Bohmer-Schlegel-Schelling, an extraordinary woman, who was also a key figure in the translation of Shakespeare into German. Gathered around her were an astonishing array of talent, including Fichte, Schiller, Goethe, William and Friedrich Schlegel, Novalis, Schelling and Holderlin. In that milieu the notion of non-duality became central in a view of the world as essentially dynamic and emergent, and of the essential oneness of poetry and philosophy as well as of poetry and science, as understood by Goethe and evident in the recasting of his treatise on the 'Metamorphosis of Plants' as a poem. Humans were seen as a part of the natural world not apart from it. This orientation is apparent in the works of Holderlin, and subsequently the works of Heidegger and Paul Celan. Indeed, even Schelling considered writing his philosophical works as poems, inspired as he was by Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. Their view and approach to creativity saw a radical break from the dominant dualistic and absolutist ideology of the day, something which has subsequently been lost. Non-duality was a key notion, and is shared with Taoism in China, Dzogchen in Tibet, as well as being evident among certain of the Pre-Socratic philosopher-poets of Ancient Greece. This poem, 'After-Jena' relates to our cataclysmic times from this perspective - rehearsing key themes of 'home' and 'homelessness', 'refuge' and 'estrangement' or 'alienation'. It ranges across Eastern Europe, Mongolia, Tibet, England in the Medieval period and English Romanticism, among other themes that are developed and varied as the poem unfolds on the destitution of our times and the shrinking hope of salvation that still just about remains alive. It is a poem of enormous scope, depth and ambition. A poem for our age.

Students' course grades matter. Research studies show that students' grades are more predictive than test scores of their future academic success, including high school and post-secondary outcomes. Yet nationally and within Chicago Public Schools (CPS), boys' grades are consistently lower than girls' grades. CPS leaders and educators want to meet their goal of "Bs or better" and strong educational outcomes for all students, and they are in conversation about how they're supporting boys.This study aims to provide insights into this difference in boys' and girls' grades in Chicago by looking first at one grade level and one subject area-ninth-grade math (algebra and geometry)-using two school years of data, 2016-17 and 2017-18. Our findings are specific to math students in these years, and also suggest what may (and may not) be driving differences in other grades and subjects.

Climate change is a serious threat to socioeconomic development all around the world. There is enough evidence that the earth's climate is changing with global warming of 1.5簞C rises in temperature according to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report which also describes vulnerability as "The degree to which a system is susceptible to, or unable to cope with the adverse effects of climate change". Thus climate change is adversely affecting both social aspects and the livelihood of all communities. As this risk may increase it is necessary to develop innovative approaches to effectively cope with climate-related risks. Assessing vulnerability is important as it provides information on the measures tobe taken to adapt to climate change. Hence, a vulnerability assessment is the first step in adaptation planning. The main objective of this study is to carry out a current climate Districtlevel vulnerability assessment for the State of Andhra Pradesh based on a set of common indicators. These indicators mainly comprise of Socio-economic& livelihood, Biophysical, Institutional & Infrastructure. Using a Vulnerability Index, derived for each District in Andhra Pradesh, the study identifies and categorises the most vulnerable District in the State and the major drivers of their vulnerability. Thus this vulnerability assessment with a common methodological framework helps in prioritising investment for climate adaptation.

This study aims to assess the potential role of insurance in alleviating climate change risks in India. Protecting Guardians of Forest
Forest dwellers who have roamed the indian subcontinent for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years have a larger story to be narrated. In India, consolidation of forest laws started during the British period with the inception of the Indian Forest Department in 1864 and scientific management of forests was introduced for planned and systematic management of the forests. Commercial interests of the then British Government motivated it to declare more and more lands as reserved forests, without ascertaining the rights of the tribals and other forest dwellers. Even after independence in 1947, during the process of amalgamation of princely states, the activity of consolidation of government forests continued. However, no effective steps were taken to simultaneously settle the rights of tribals and other forest dwellers. The absence of records of rights that never existed for these people became the main constraint in resolving this issue. As a result, the rural people, especially tribals and forest dwellers who have been living in the forest since time immemorial, have come to be erroneously looked upon as encroachers of forest lands. Climate change consists of the most important global environmental problem in our era while tourism industry is the main industry in the island of Crete, Greece contributing at around 50% in the regional income. International tourism is growing fast increasing the tourism-related carbon emissions. Climate change and tourism are interconnected and interrelated. Climate change has undesired and harmful impacts on the tourism industry in Crete threatening the local fragile and sensitive ecosystems while the Cretan tourism industry contributes to climate change. The aim of the current book is the study of their nexus and interdependencies. The direct and indirect impacts of climate change on the local tourism industry are investigated as well as their contribution to climate change. The mitigation of all sectors of tourism industry to climate change as well as its adaptation to the new climate conditions are examined and assessed. The de-carbonization in various sectors of the tourism industry in the island is studied highlighting the difficulties of achieving carbon neutrality in each of them. The impacts of Covid-19 as well as the over tourism in the island are also examined. The possibility of creating net-zero carbon emissions accommodation facilities are mentioned. The book highlights the necessity for a sustainable and low-carbon transformation of the local tourism. Stagecoaches, Waggons, Roadside Inns and Highwaymen
Stagecoach travel in Kent was at its heyday during the second half of the 1700s and for much of the 1800s, with multiple horse-drawn coaches and carriages travelling back and forth along the London to Dover road and to and from other Kent towns, stopping to change horses or for refreshments at one or more roadside coaching inns. There were also overnight Royal Mail guarded coaches carrying letters, packets and parcels to and from Kent towns and posting inns to London. Further horse-drawn vehicles, including all kinds of two- and four-wheeled waggons, carts, and vans were daily employed in moving agricultural and other goods around the county. Later came Hackney carriages and hansom cabs in the towns, and even a few years of single and double-decker horse-drawn buses and trams. Horse-drawn travel meant there was a good trade for the many stagecoach, postal and waggon inns, for all the tradesmen making and repairing the vehicles, their wheels and harnesses, as well as ostlers and blacksmiths. It also provided the opportunity for rich pickings for the many highwaymen and footpads that frequented the Kent roads The widespread use of horse-drawn vehicles started to decline in usage from the late 1800s and early 1900s following the quite rapid spread of the railway network throughout Kent, together with the early days of the combustion engine and the introduction of motorised transport, as well as the use of electric trams. This story of horse-drawn transport in Kent, covering some 200 or so years, sets out what it was really like to both travel and transport goods and post on Kent's roads in centuries past. It wasn't always the most joyful of experiences and could often be quite hazardous, but it does make for interesting reading.
