Sterilization of Instruments in Solar Ovens
The sterilization of instruments in rural health clinics in less developed countries is an increasing problem because chemical methods can no longer be recommended and wood fuel is becoming more and more scarce. Thus, it seemed obvious to try to utilize solar energy for sterilization purposes. A solar oven was designed and manufactured using local materials and simple tools. The solar oven was tested by physical, chemical, and microbiological methods. A mathematical model for the sterilization effect was developed and programmed into a microprocessor that was connected to a thermocouple. The microprocessor switches on a green light when the sterilization is completed. After successful testing, the oven was built into the west-facing wall of a rural health clinic and used daily for sterilization.

A familial disorder that causes psychosis is described. Associated with the disorder are distinct patterns of physical symptoms and conditions that may be used to assist diagnosis. The proband carries genetic markers that link the disorder to schizophrenia in Irish high density schizophrenia families. The genetic and metabolic derangements underpinning the disorder are analysed and potentially linked. Evidence is considered which supports a working hypothesis in which haplotype SNPs located at IL3 and/or ACSL6 at 5q31.1 result in or from the failure or partial failure of one or more ERE to activate a pathway leading from P5CS to proline.

Can NHS hospitals do more with less?
The financial challenge facing the UK's health services over the next four years, combined with the relentless rise in the demand for services, means that it is imperative that the NHS delivers more for less. The authors of this report studied UK and international literature on hospital efficiency, and surveyed senior managers and clinicians in six hospital trusts that had been 'turned around' following financial difficulties. They found much research evidence on what measures are associated with higher productivity in hospitals. They gleaned practical lessons from the managers about what successful steps had been taken to improve efficiency in their financially challenged hospitals. An accompanying research summary highlights the report's key findings within the context of the current Government health reforms. The Letter. Irish Journal for Lacanian Psychoanalysis is owned by the School of Psychotherapy at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin. It publishes the cartel work of members of the Irish School for Lacanian Psychoanalysis, founded by Cormac Gallagher in 2007. This new edited collection brings together historians and social scientists to engage with the global history of Universal Basic Income (UBI) and offer historically-rich perspectives on contemporary debates about the future of work.
