Sensory analysis and consumer research are relevant tools in innovation andnew product development, from design to commercialization. Ambient Air Quality in the Czech Republic
Ambient air quality in the present-day Czech Republic (CR), one of the two successioncountries of Czechoslovakia post-1993, was perceived as a major problem with severehuman health and environmental consequences, particularly between the 1970s and1990s. Since that time, the ambient air quality in the CR has improved substantially, dueto newly introduced stringent legislation and technical countermeasures. Nevertheless, there are still activities which represent significant emission sources, such as localheating and increased vehicle travel through communities. A����er a substantial decreasein emissions in both the CR and its neighbouring countries, the levels of some ambientair pollutants from the 2000s are still not satisfactory. In this respect, aerosol, groundlevelozone, and benzo[a]pyrene remain major problems, as they do elsewhere inEurope. The book provides a valuable update both on time trends and spatial changes inambient air quality, and highlights the recent activities in both monitoring and modellingof principle ambient air pollutants in the CR.
Cellular and Molecular Strategies in Cyanobacterial Survival
In this Special Issue of Life, we invited researchers from all over the world to share advances in their understanding of ecological, cellular, and molecular mechanisms of cyanobacterial survival. This includes original work and review articles dealing with signaling pathways, strategies of gene and protein regulation, global studies, and new discoveries related to the differentiation of spore-like akinetes, motile hormogonia, and nitrogen-fixing heterocysts.
Land Use Transitions under Rapid Urbanization
Land use transition is the manifestation of land use and land cover change (LUCC) and is also a major research focus of the Global Land Project (GLP), as well as land system science (LSS). Land provides essential resources to society, and its changes have large consequences for the local and global environment and human well-being. The past, current, and projected state and dynamics of land use represent the major focus of land use science, which is influenced by long-term anthropogenic changes. The concept of land use transition highlights the fact that land use change demonstrates a non-linear process and is related to other societal and biophysical disturbances through a series of transitions.Land use transitions can be seen as the primary forces driving the transformation and development of the rural-urban territorial system and bringing about direct socioeconomic and environmental effects on regional sustainability. Land use transitions can be measured by changes in both the dominant morphology (e.g., quantity, structure, and spatial patterns) and the recessive morphology (e.g., quality, property rights, management mode, fixed input, productive ability, and function) of land use.The aim of this book was to detect or examine the processes, patterns, and socioeconomic and environmental effects of land use transitions and the mechanisms of human-land interactions against the context of rapid urbanization and industrialization from a wide range of perspectives, as well as the provision of solutions for sustainable land use based on scientific findings.

Galileo Galilei was a great scientist, and therefore not afraid of causing controversy, even if he had to pay a great price. His public advocacy of the Copernican over the Aristotelian system of the universe flew directly in the face of biblical authority and ecclesiastical tradition. Condemned and placed under house arrest by the Inquisition, Galileo nonetheless devoted his last years to the completion of his Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences, which deals with motion and the resistance of solids.
