How Far the Light Reaches

Back Bay 出版
2023/12/28 出版

A fascinating tour of creatures from the surface to the deepest ocean floor: this "miraculous, transcendental book" invites us to envision wilder, grander, and more abundant possibilities for the way we live (Ed Yong, author of An Immense World). A queer, mixed race writer working in a largely white, male field, science and conservation journalist Sabrina Imbler has always been drawn to the mystery of life in the sea, and particularly to creatures living in hostile or remote environments. Each essay in their debut collection profiles one such creature, including: -the mother octopus who starves herself while watching over her eggs, -the Chinese sturgeon whose migration route has been decimated by pollution and dams, -the bizarre, predatory Bobbitt worm (named after Lorena), -the common goldfish that flourishes in the wild, -and more. Imbler discovers that some of the most radical models of family, community, and care can be found in the sea, from gelatinous chains that are both individual organisms and colonies of clones to deep-sea crabs that have no need for the sun, nourished instead by the chemicals and heat throbbing from the core of the Earth. Exploring themes of adaptation, survival, sexuality, and care, and weaving the wonders of marine biology with stories of their own family, relationships, and coming of age, How Far the Light Reaches is a shimmering, otherworldly debut that attunes us to new visions of our world and its miracles. Elusive Phenomena, Unwieldy Things

Springer 出版
2023/12/26 出版

This open access book provides a historical treatment of scientific control in experimentation in the longue dur矇e. The introduction distinguishes four related strands in the history of experimental control: the development of practices to stabilize experimental conditions; the career of the comparative design; the unfolding of methodological discussions about control practices and designs; and the history of the term "control". Each chapter brings these distinctions to bear on specific historical episodes. The focus is on experiments with complex, elusive phenomena such as perception and learning, irregular movements, and unobservable elements. Such experiments bring control issues to the fore because they are difficult to design and stabilize and often controversial. Together, the chapters show that the local context shapes what exactly is controlled, how control can be accomplished, and how controls are justified. They also show that control strategies and methodological ideas often remain stable for a long time and change only gradually. This book, as well as the volume on analysis and synthesis in experimentation by the same editors, contains contributions by an array of experts from multiple disciplines, making it suitable for historians and philosophers of science and students alike.

Capturing Glaciers

Dani,Inkpen  著
University o 出版
2023/12/23 出版

Explores the photography of climate changePhotographs do not simply speak for themselves. Their meanings are built through interpretive frameworks that shift over time. Today, photographs of receding glaciers are one of the most well recognized visualizations of human-caused climate change. These images, captured through repeat photography, have become effective with an unambiguous message: global warming is happening, and it is happening now. But this wasn't always the case. The meaning and evidentiary value of repeat glacier photography has varied over time, reflecting not only evolving scientific norms but also social, cultural, and political influences. In Capturing Glaciers, Dani Inkpen historicizes the use of repeat glacier photographs, examining what they show, what they obscure, and how they influence public understanding of nature and climate change. Though convincing as a form of evidence, these images offer a limited and sometimes misleading representation of glaciers themselves. Furthermore, their use threatens to replicate problematic ideas baked into their history. With clear and compelling writing, Capturing Glaciers ultimately calls for a centering of climate justice and warns of the consequences of reducing the problem of global warming to one of distant wilderness.

How the New World Became Old

Princeton 出版
2023/12/22 出版

How the idea of deep time transformed how Americans see their country and themselves During the nineteenth century, Americans were shocked to learn that the land beneath their feet had once been stalked by terrifying beasts. T. rex and Brontosaurus ruled the continent. North America was home to saber-toothed cats and woolly mammoths, great herds of camels and hippos, and sultry tropical forests now fossilized into massive coal seams. How the New World Became Old tells the extraordinary story of how Americans discovered that the New World was not just old--it was a place rooted in deep time. In this panoramic book, Caroline Winterer traces the history of an idea that today lies at the heart of the nation's identity as a place of primordial natural beauty. Europeans called America the New World, and literal readings of the Bible suggested that Earth was only six thousand years old. Winterer takes readers from glacier-capped peaks in Yosemite to Alabama slave plantations and canal works in upstate New York, describing how naturalists, explorers, engineers, and ordinary Americans unearthed a past they never suspected, a history more ancient than anyone ever could have imagined. Drawing on archival evidence ranging from unpublished field notes and letters to early stratigraphic diagrams, How the New World Became Old reveals how the deep time revolution ushered in profound changes in science, literature, art, and religion, and how Americans came to realize that the New World might in fact be the oldest world of all.

"We are buried beneath mountains of fast-accumulating data. In such circumstances, this book, rather than adding to the data load, aims to offer real understanding." --James LovelockHuman beings are extraordinary creatures. Intelligent, agile, and curious, we have adapted and invented our way to becoming the most important species on the planet. So great is the extent of our influence, that many speak of a new geological era, the Anthropocene, an age defined by human-induced change to the blue and green globe we call home. Our lofty status comes with responsibility as much as possibility: How should we approach our present and future? What knowledge should we carry with us? Conceived by James Lovelock (1919-2022), inventor of the Gaia theory, this illustrated essay collection brings together an all-star lineup of thinkers and scientists to offer essential understanding about who we are, how we live, and where we might be going.Much as the Gaia theory considers our Earth as an integrated whole of living systems, The Earth and I encourages holistic understanding. Across 12 chapters, we take in both the intricate details and immense structures of our species and our planet, from our ever-expanding universe to our minuscule but mighty cells. Are Human Soul Energies Recycled by the Fungi?

Herb M,Cohen  著
Ingram 出版
2023/12/17 出版

The Fungi who recycle all living organisms so that nutrients can be used in nature to continue the evolution of life on earth, includes energies generated by human beings during events of higher consciousness. This theoretical higher consciousness is what is traditionally associated with actions of the Soul of each person. Fungi recycling indicates the unrealized, intimate relationships that exist throughout all spheres of nature. Just as the theoretical Soul points in the direction of connection with more subtle spheres of existence, the process of recycling in Nature is powerful evidence that the spiritual concept of a Soul, and a human Soul, also has a very concrete aspect. Whether you believe in a God or not, Nature is totally committed to the inter-relationship between all life forms. Therefore, all actions, especially those of humans, have a much broader effect on all levels of existence than we may know or imagine about. And so the idea of a Soul, that evaluates what we do, in relation to evolution, gives meaning to life, beyond our individual desires and concerns. Ours is a time of much depression, always being reminded nothing seems to matter, but realizing that Nature may have many far reaching aims, some perhaps beyond our knowledge, or understanding, can act as a stimulus to appreciate life. This is what the book is about.

The Probabilistic Revolution, Volume 1

Mit Press 出版
2023/12/16 出版

Probability ideas are the success story common to the growth of the modern natural and social sciences. Chance, indeterminism, and statistical inference have radically and globally transformed the sciences in a "probabilistic revolution." This monumental work traces the rise, the transformation, and the diffusion of probabilistic and statistical thinking in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is less concerned with specific technical discoveries than with locating the probability revolution historically within a larger framework of ideas. There is no comparable study that treats the rise of probability and statistics in such scope and depth. The contributors - scientists, historians and philosophers from eight countries - make it possible for readers trained in many disciplines to see why the probabilistic revolution has been so complete and so successful, and how the rejection of uniform causality by quantum physics, the stochastic nature of evolutionary biology, the indeterminisms of human psychology, and the random processes of many economic activities are all manifestations of an underlying unifying concept.Volume 1 opens with provocative essays on scientific revolutions in general and the probabilistic revolution in particular by Thomas S. Kuhn, I. Bernard Cohen, and Ian Hacking. Other authors discuss the evolution of philosophical ideas about probability and their articulation and elaboration in the mathematics of the nineteenth century and describe the first applications of techniques of statistical inference during that century: Topics include the uses and abuses of official statistics by the bureaucrats of France, England, and Prussia; the use - or neglect - of statistics by nascent sociologists, demographers, and insurance actuaries; and the emergence of statistical methodologies in fields ranging from social reform to agricultural production. The emphasis in volume 2 is on the more recent scientific advances of the probabilistic approach in various natural and social sciences, from "random walks" in the stock market to random drift in natural selection, and from indeterminate events at the atomic level to unpredictable actions at the human level.

Different Beasts

Ingram 出版
2023/12/15 出版

Different Beasts studies conceptions of human and animal identity as articulated in the ancient Chinese text known as the Zhuangzi and in the works of the seventeenth-century European philosopher Benedict de Spinoza. By examining how, in these very different philosophies, notions of humanness and animality intersect with ideas about human unity and solidarity, social order, and social difference categories (such as gender, descent, and ability), Different Beasts opens new paths for understanding Spinoza and the Zhuangzi while also developing methodological insights into the practice of cross-cultural comparative philosophy. Different Beasts critically engages with a long tradition of reading Spinoza together with Asian "wisdom literatures" and especially with canonical Chinese texts. Interpretations of these works, which are outside the mainstream philosophical canon (defined from a certain Euro-American perspective), often see them as premised on a harmonious view of the world, free of tensions between humans and the nonhuman world. Different Beasts adds to the literature of animality and to the practice of turning one's attention toward "non-canonical" philosophical texts to seek new understandings. However, it argues that the transformative potential of studying these texts does not lie in their allegedly harmonious view of the world but in the variety of ways they exhibit humans' uniqueness, foolishness, or superiority, which can help us further understand our own often contradictory investments in the human-animal binary.

Staying Together

Ingram 出版
2023/12/15 出版

Staying Together: Natureculture in a Changing World is about staying together, living together, and the dynamics and poetics of togetherness. It demonstrates, through a strong investment in nature studies, nonhuman studies, and nature culture and cohabitative readings, a commitment to interconnectedness. The contributors speak of co-habitation, a kind of co-presence that happens for the good of all and has been happening before we realized its prevalence. They argue co-beingness is deeply founded in difference, differentiation, and dispersion. They explore and investigate this fraught and profound "weness" at a variety of levels, and look at forms of biocentrism and bioegalitarianism where there are opportunities for the affirmation of difference as much as declaration of complexities in co-specicism, co-occurrence, and co-being. The book answers the following questions: How can the complexity of sustainability and survivality lead us to re-planetize the planet? Are we unworlding an Earth where the meaning and ethos "being together" demand reinvention and rearticulation?

Madness and Enterprise

Nima,Bassiri  著
University 出版
2023/12/15 出版

Uncovers a powerful relationship between pathology and money: beginning in the nineteenth century, the severity of mental illness was measured against a patient's economic productivity. Madness and Enterprise reveals the economic norms embedded within psychiatric thinking about mental illness in the North Atlantic world. Over the course of the nineteenth century, various forms of madness were subjected to a style of psychiatric reasoning that was preoccupied with money. Psychiatrists across Western Europe and the United States attributed financial and even moral value to an array of pathological conditions, such that some mental disorders were seen as financial assets and others as economic liabilities. By turning to economic conduct and asking whether potential patients appeared capable of managing their financial affairs or even generating wealth, psychiatrists could often bypass diagnostic uncertainties about a person's mental state. Through an exploration of the intertwined histories of psychiatry and economic thought, Nima Bassiri shows how this relationship transformed the very idea of value in the modern North Atlantic, as the most common forms of social valuation--moral value, medical value, and economic value--were rendered equivalent and interchangeable. If what was good and what was healthy were increasingly conflated with what was remunerative (and vice versa), then a conceptual space opened through which madness itself could be converted into an economic form and subsequently redeemed--and even revered.

"One of the most daring of contemporary writers in the genre." -Norton Anthology of Nature Writing "[Hay's] books about Cape Cod belong in the company of Thoreau, Donald Culross Peattie, Henry Beston, and Rachel Carson." -Robert Taylor, The Boston Globe "Hay's new book, published in his 83rd year, is autumnal in spirit and in substance. . . . The essence of this enterprise is a kind of prayer, eloquent and deeply felt." -Richard Todd, Civilization "[Hay] is, to my mind, without question this country's greatest living nature writer. . . . He writes out of such a profoundly poetic impulse that he cannot help but produce prose of a high literary order." -Robert Finch, The Cape Codder "Hay loses himself in details, describing the minute play of light through grasses, the reflection of a water bug on the rocks of a stream bottom, the fungi on fallen trees that begin to glow with an eerie luminescence. . . . [He] is not only the observer of what most of us don't see, but of what we may never get a chance to see." -David Cline, Hartford Advocate "In the Company of Light shares with considerable humility the well-honed insights of a man rich in the wisdom of age and observation of nature." -Nancy Grape, Maine Sunday Telegram John Hay is author of The Great Beach (winner of the John Burroughs Prize), The Run, and A Beginner's Faith in Things Unseen, among many other books. The Last of Its Kind

Princeton 出版
2023/12/09 出版

Shortlisted for the Royal Society Trivedi Science Book PrizeHow an iconic bird's final days exposed the reality of human-caused extinction The great auk is one of the most tragic and documented examples of extinction. A flightless bird that bred primarily on the remote islands of the North Atlantic, the last of its kind were killed in Iceland in 1844. G穩sli P獺lsson draws on firsthand accounts from the Icelanders who hunted the last great auks to bring to life a bygone age of Victorian scientific exploration while offering vital insights into the extinction of species. P獺lsson vividly recounts how British ornithologists John Wolley and Alfred Newton set out for Iceland to collect specimens only to discover that the great auks were already gone. At the time, the Victorian world viewed extinction as an impossibility or trivialized it as a natural phenomenon. P獺lsson chronicles how Wolley and Newton documented the fate of the last birds through interviews with the men who killed them, and how the naturalists' Icelandic journey opened their eyes to the disappearance of species as a subject of scientific concern--and as something that could be caused by humans. Blending a richly evocative narrative with rare, unpublished material as well as insights from ornithology, anthropology, and P獺lsson's own North Atlantic travels, The Last of Its Kind reveals how the saga of the great auk opens a window onto the human causes of mass extinction.

Essays on Art and Science

Ingram 出版
2023/12/08 出版

When we view a work of art, we often experience an emotional response, but the causes of our reactions are complex. Our knowledge of why we respond to art as we do is rooted in science--in psychology and biology. Eric R. Kandel traces the origins of this understanding to early twentieth-century Vienna, which gave rise to the concept of the "beholder's share," the realization that art is incomplete without the perceptual and emotional involvement of the viewer--that is, without our responses to it. But what causes our response? Our brain is a creativity machine that brings to bear on any image--including a painting--certain innate, universal processes related to sensory perception as well as higher-order processes related to our personal experiences, memories, and emotions. Understanding how these unconscious processes in the brain interact to create the beholder's share is one of the great challenges currently confronting brain science. The essays on art and science in this book vary widely in subject matter, including the angst-ridden portraits of Soutine, conflicting views of women's sexuality, Cubism's challenge to our innate visual processes, and why we react differently to abstract versus figurative art. But each essay focuses on the interaction of art and science. Woven throughout are the many notable scientists, art historians, artists, and others, both Jewish and non-Jewish, who contributed to our understanding of how we experience art.

Post Green

Ingram 出版
2023/12/08 出版

The idea in Post Green: Literature, Culture, and the Environment is not to create another binary like East/West, but rather a call for a shift in the order of perception. The contributors signal a movement from the conventional understanding of green thinking--acknowledging human-centered limitations of the green approaches and recognising the immense possibilities and holistic perspectives that a symbiotic human-nature perspective offers. This book proposes to move beyond the monoculture of the mind toward a celebration of diversity and plurality. While the movement from red to green was a politics of difference, as essays in this book emphasize, the shift toward post green is based on an all-inclusive and holistic vision that contains within itself both difference and multiplicity, something that is quintessential for the stability of our ecosystem. Such affirmative bio-politics toward an alternative symbiosis challenges intellectual theorising, without minimizing the need for radical questioning. It urges the need to do away with disciplinary boundaries drawing hopes for a new spiritual geography of the mind to surface.

Cognitive Carpentry

Mit Press 出版
2023/12/07 出版

A sequel to Pollock's How to Build a Person, this volume builds upon that theoretical groundwork for the implementation of rationality through artificial intelligence. Pollock argues that progress in AI has stalled because of its creators' reliance upon unformulated intuitions about rationality. Instead, he bases the OSCAR architecture upon an explicit philosophical theory of rationality, encompassing principles of practical cognition, epistemic cognition, and defeasible reasoning. In his groundbreaking new book, John Pollock establishes an outpost at the crossroads where artificial intelligence meets philosophy. Specifically, he proposes a general theory of rationality and then describes its implementation in OSCAR, an architecture for an autonomous rational agent he claims is the first AI system capable of performing reasoning that philosophers would regard as epistemically sophisticated.A sequel to Pollock's How to Build a Person, this volume builds upon that theoretical groundwork for the implementation of rationality through artificial intelligence. One of the results is the world's first automated defeasible reasoner capable of reasoning in a rich, logical environment.Underlying Pollock's thesis is a conviction that the tenets of artifical intelligence and those of philosophy can be complementary and mutually beneficial. And, while members of both camps have in recent years grown skeptical of the very possibility of "symbol processing" AI, Cognitive Carpentry establishes that such an approach to AI can be successful.A Bradford Book
