Thermal Safety of Lithium Ion Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are crucial for supporting the large-scale application of energy storage systems, but their inherent thermal instability has become a significant safety concern, especially in high-density battery configurations used in electric vehicles and energy storage stations. Effective thermal management systems are essential for dissipating heat, maintaining an optimal temperature range, and preventing TR. A deep understanding of heat generation, transfer, and dissipation is critical for efficient thermal management and the development of thermal models for LIBs. In the event of TR, the release of gases and flammable materials can cause fires, requiring safety measures such as heat blocking and timely heat dissipation to prevent or delay TRP. Monitoring and early warning technologies, like gas composition monitoring, play a key role in detecting early signs of TR. Fire suppression technologies have also evolved, focusing on optimizing fire extinguishing agents and developing new materials with more efficient and safer fire suppression solutions. Therefore, this Reprint was crafted to update the scientific community on recent advancements and future trajectories in thermal safety, offering valuable insights for improving battery safety and performance. The Scent of Orchid Species
The odor can represent one of the strategies used by the plant to attract the pollinator insects. SPME (solid phase microextraction) coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry can give a significative help in order to identify the correct composition of the scent. This method does not require chemical treatment of the sample (such as the chemical extraction of labella), and, then, can represent a powerful method to understand the exact composition of the scent, without external contamination. In this book we are collected some of the results we obtained analyzing the scent of orchid species growing in Basilicata (Southern Italy).

Thermo-Mechanical Approach To Evaluate Softening Behavior Of Polystyrene
The project aimed to design and establish a novel measurement technique for the glass transition phenomenon temperature (Tg) of polymeric materials. This has been achieved by examining the ability of carbon dioxide (CO2) at high pressures to soften polymers and consequently monitoring the Tg of various polymers at extreme pressures encountered in high engineering applications. The study was conducted in two parts: first, the mechanical measurement of the process of 'polymer softening' in CO2 at normal conditions, and second, the mechanical measurement of polymer softening in CO2 at severe conditions. In the first study, the softening of polymers as a function of applied CO2 pressure and temperature was measured using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and the designed facility. In initial experiments, the temperature was slowly ramped upwards and the nominal glass transition temperature was recorded corresponding to the temperature at which the central deflection suddenly began to increase. Significant reductions in the bending onset temperatures (typically 50 - 100oC) were observed on applying CO2 for polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyethylene and polystyrene over the range of pressures applied (24 to 120 bar). A model was developed to use onset and full-scale bending temperatures to estimate diffusion coefficients, assuming that full-scale bending corresponds to the centre of the strip being sufficiently plasticized by CO2 to become rubbery. An equation for deflection versus time was derived from a diffusion analysis where it was assumed that the stiffness of the strip was only due to the glassy core region, which gradually reduces in thickness as the CO2 penetrates the strip. The comparison of the experimental data obtained from this work with the literature data was found to be excellent.

Electrochemical Innovations in Pollution Control
This book focused on the environmental pollution control through analysis of hydrogen peroxide and hydrazine through the electrochemical methods. These methods are attractive for biological and environmental analysis because they are cheap, simple, fast, sensitive, and selective. The double character of DAN (a hollow film) and PdNPs improved the electrochemical redox response toward H2O2 via increasing the effective surface area and electron transfer. The PdNPs/p1,5-DAN/CPE has become a promising sensor to determine H2O2 and HZ in real samples, environmental samples, and in enzymeless catalyzed reactions due to its advantages of high sensitivity, reproducibility, good stability and anti-interference ability against many interferents.
