Bringing Up Beaver
A lively and charming account of one human's relationship with an orphaned beaver kit. On May 10, 2020, an orphaned beaver kit was found in St. Albans, Vermont and handed over to John Aberth, a licensed volunteer wildlife rehabilitator. Over the next two years, John raised the kit, whom he nicknamed "BK," and prepared him for release back into the wild. During that time, John and BK developed a special and unique bond, which John documented in a daily diary. That diary became the basis for Bringing Up Beaver, a lively and engaging account of one human's relationship with a wild animal. Bringing Up Beaver is more than just a feel-good story about human encounters with nature. Full of fascinating observations about beaver behavior and biology, Bringing Up Beaver also documents the unique challenges and obstacles to be faced and overcome in rehabbing a wild beaver kit. Populating the story are plenty of other wild creatures that John encounters in the course of his journey with BK, including other beavers--one of whom became BK's mate--as well as hawks, owls, mink, and weasels. For anyone who has been charmed by a beaver's "smile" or enjoyed books like Fox and I and Eager, Bringing Up Beaver is a must read that will give us a new perspective on the wildlife and natural world all around us.

Lizards, Insects, and a Dandelion
As I walked along the trail, I looked and listened and felt with each step. That is what I do when out here, forgetting my frustrations, the people, the money, life's unwanted troubles that follow me around.I see a dandelion and stop to take a closer look, from down here, low, near the ground, just in case there is something that can't be seen from up there. Golden strands greet me and I smile.I notice a cluster of seeds off to the left, waiting to be dispersed, anticipating the moment when the wind will take it to a distant place, ending a stage and beginning another. I choose not to blow.Beautiful photography and words to inspire and promote reflection, products of my desire to connect what I find out on trails to the life I live. Join me as we enter the world of flowers and trees, ponds and the waterfalls that create them, leaves and the tiny creatures that wander across their veins, bees, ladybugs, aphids, moths, wasps, flies, beetles, bugs, thorns, lizards, spider webs, and ants. This book is full of nature at its best, and you get a view that only patience and persistence can create.

Book of Texas Moths
How often do we pass by moths under a porch light or fluttering under a streetlamp without giving them a second glance? Yet moths, far more plentiful than butterflies, with their intricate patterns and curious coloration, often emerge as beautiful as butterflies. Book of Texas Moths is based on the original field work of distinguished Texas naturalist, author, and photographer John Tveten (1934-2009), whose work stands as testament to what a person can discover by careful and systemic observation of the natural world. Beginning in 1978 until his death in 2009, Tveten kept meticulous field notes about nearly every bird, butterfly, mammal, reptile, dragonfly, and moth he encountered, using a form designed by his wife, Gloria, who shared his enthusiasm for documenting wildlife. In addition to careful field notes detailing the when, where, and what of moth observations, Tveten's entries were linked to corresponding photographs of the moths in various stages of their life cycles. He planned to shape all of this information into a book to be called "Butterflies of the Night." After his passing, nature writers Gary and Kathy Adams Clark, close friends and proteges of John and Gloria Tveten, set out to transcribe and publish his field notes alongside the corresponding photographs. Remaining faithful to John's original research, this manuscript presents Tveten's careful documentation on the distribution, history, and identification of 100 Texas moth species, while incorporating his descriptive phrases into as many species accounts as possible. It is not intended as a field guide; rather, Book of Texas Moths takes readers into the mind of a disciplined naturalist as he conducted important original research.

How to Be a Living Thing
A luminous collection of essays exploring the lessons we can incorporate from the animal world in order to live more fully as humans A shelter cat teaches us that our damaged parts, too, are worthy of love... a captive orca shows us that inconvenience and difficulties are the blessing of a full life... a gorilla teaches the universal language of grief... a group of oysters who prove that magic and science can and do coexist... In How to Be a Living Thing, Mari Andrew reflects on the ways animals mirror, challenge, and deepen our experiences as living creatures in the world. Through her personal stories and explorations into the inner world of other creatures, Mari illuminates the opportunities and wonders of being a living thing. Highly-sensitive horses, overly-cautious donkeys, and silly social rats are just a few of the animal teachers who offer us glimpses of the glories and shortcomings of humanity. Heartwarming, funny, and insightful, How to Be a Living Thing reminds us that we are perfectly imperfect beings, capable of profound connection with each other and with all other species of the remarkable natural world that surrounds us.

Animal Futurity
Animal Futurity: A Plea for the Immortality of the Brutes, penned by Joseph Hamilton and originally published in 1851, presents a compelling and thought-provoking argument for the spiritual significance of animals. In this intriguing work, Hamilton explores the then-contentious idea that animals, like humans, possess souls and are therefore deserving of consideration within theological and ethical frameworks. Hamilton challenges prevailing anthropocentric views by advocating for the recognition of animals' inherent worth and their potential for an afterlife. Through philosophical reasoning and religious interpretation, he constructs a unique perspective that invites readers to reconsider their understanding of the relationship between humans and animals. This edition offers modern readers a chance to engage with a historical perspective on animal rights and spirituality, raising questions that continue to resonate in contemporary discussions about animal welfare and ethics. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Australian Animal Law
Australian Animal Law: Context and Critique provides comprehensive information about the legal and regulatory framework governing the interaction between humans and animals.By relating specific content areas to the discipline's broader characteristics and themes, researcher Elizabeth Ellis exposes the systemic nature of current problems and the consequent need for significant change. This book also illustrates the role of official animal protection narratives in legitimising the existing system despite the many factual flaws they contain.Ellis covers the major areas of animal law in detail, incorporating accessible contextual material and allowing readers to consolidate their understanding and build upon their knowledge. Key areas include the concept of unnecessary animal suffering, the effective exemption of most animals from the operation of cruelty laws, regulatory conflicts of interest, the hidden nature of animal use and the lack of transparency in animal law.Australian Animal Law is an essential resource, inviting reflection on the way the law helps to construct the relationship between human and non-human animals, including through its silences and omissions.
Fish Immune System - Innate, Acquired and Lymphoid Organs
Fish are the most seasoned vertebrates group with a resistant framework displaying clear similarities with the defence systems of mammals and birds. The immune system is a set of cellular and humoral components that defend the body against foreign substances, such as microbes, toxins, or malevolent cells, reacting to variables, for example, endogenous or exogenous segments that animate this framework. The fish insusceptible framework is isolated into inborn and versatile (memory), and both are partitioned into cell-interceded guard and humoral elements (solvent substances). These two frameworks cooperate to decimate trespassers or to trigger protection measures. The intrinsic framework includes the skin as a physical barrier, while the supplement system, antimicrobial enzymes, interleukins, interferons, and defense cells like granulocytes, monocytes, macrophages, and cytotoxic killer cells are components found in the body before encountering the pathogenic agent, serving as the first line of defense that responds faster than the specific system. The inflammation is also regarded as an innate immune response, driven by intricate interactions of cellular and humoral components.
The control of Red-billed quelea
Quelea are highly gregarious birds, congregating wherever possible, pending food availability and distribution. They are closely related to other species of the Weaver family but are unique in their behavioural pattern, moving considerable distances each year during the breeding season to take advantage of the seasonal timing of passing rain fronts (a pattern unusual for the smaller seed-feeding bird species). Throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, quelea seasonally move great distances of up to 1100 km recorded for one movement. The escalation of their numbers into vast locust-like proportions highlights the downside of macro farming activity that effectively minimises the natural constraints on population numbers at the onset of the rainy season when natural food becomes critically short.

Neuroprotective activity of Quercetin
Fluorosis has become an endemic health problem all over the world. Fluorosis is an important predicament severely affecting the quality of life of millions and ultimately causing several metabolic and degenerative disorders. This book covers the neurodegeneration, neuroregeneration and neuroprotection. Prolonged exposures to sodium fluoride in organisms lead to learning, memory deficits due to decrease in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and neurodegeneration. The primary reasons for these changes were due to oxidative stress and excitotoxicity induced damages in developing brain. It illustrates the neurotoxicity of sodium fluoride and ameliorative role of quercetin. Quercetin, the major flavonoid in the human diet. The main objective of this book is to evaluate the protective role of quercetin against sodium fluoride induced neurodegeneration with the appropriate interrelated oxidative stress markers, neurotransmitters, histological, physical and behavioural parameters corresponding to cerebral cortex and hippocampus of developing brain of rat. In this book, quercetin is highlighted as a potentially effective treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.
EFFICACY OF HERBAL IMMUNOSTIMULANT ON Labeo rohita
The aquatic environment comprises various intricate ecosystems that interact with one another, both living and non-living. These ecosystems' physical and chemical processes can influence biological activity and the effects of exogenous substances, like chemicals, on organisms. The aquaculture industry has experienced tremendous expansion over the past three decades, posing new and difficult technological, social, environmental and resource allocation concerns. In addition to having sufficient nutritional effects, a probiotic diet is considered functional if it has been shown to positively affect one or more specific bodily functions in a way that is related to either a decreased risk of disease or a higher state of health and well-being. Aquaculture uses immunostimulants as a disease-controlling agent. They increased bactericidal activities and improved the function of phagocytic cells. Additionally, they support and enhance fish lysozyme and antibody responses. Lastly, the current study found that the fish treated with probiotics improved in weight and length, protein content, and gut microbiota.
The control of Chacma baboons
Baboons and monkeys have provided a challenge to crops and homesteads, challenging me from my early adolescence when I was required to shoot them to protect my father's maize and cotton crops. From the outset of my ZimParks PAC (Problem Animal Control) career, my frequent task was chasing off and controlling baboon depredation. When I took over PAC Unit 3 (Kyle National Park), ZimParks, I was tasked with undertaking the toxic control of baboons employing the chemical Telodrex(TM), also marketed as Isobenzan or Telodrin, a highly potent organochlorine residual toxicant, suspected to have a five-generation residual effect, a liquid toxicant which we painted directly onto maize cobs and left out in lines for the baboons to feed on. The toxicant application, though effective, was indiscriminate and resulted in severe cramping and convulsions to the baboon, taking time to succumb, resulting in the survivors learning and never returning to bait, even years later, educated through poorly executed operations.
