In addition to a comprehensive coverage of core concepts and foundational Bioethics and Biosafety and its importance, features that draw learners into the discipline in meaningful ways. This book provides a fundamental concept of Bioethics and Biosafety with a scope that is manageable for instructors and students alike with this; it is my pleasure to write a brief foreword to this wonderful book on the text book of Bioethics and Biosafety.
The Bear at the Bird Feeder
In this guide, Randi Minetor calls on naturalists, biologists, and state wildlife authorities to distill the best practices for creating a safe environment for humans and animals alike, and provides accounts of actual run-ins with wildlife as cautionary tales.
Ratty Restored
Ratty was in peril. By the early twenty-first century this beloved character from Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willows" had suffered a catastrophic 95% decline in its UK population. Once a common sight along many of our waterways the water vole was endangered because of the increasing intensity of urban development, modern farming and forestry, and the predatory American mink. This book tells the story of the UK's largest water vole re-introduction programme which began in 2014 in Northumberland's Kielder Forest. The author was a lead volunteer working with Northumberland Wildlife Trust throughout the ten years of the project. He tells the story through the eyes of the volunteer, with plenty of factual information about the water vole, the mink and the forest. But the main core of the story is the process of collecting native voles, breeding sufficient numbers and then releasing them back into the wild. All told with plenty of anecdotes and perspectives on the benefits of volunteering for the good of the individual, the wildlife and the organisation. Mel Rockett worked in education for 45 years as a teacher, school leader, adviser and consultant before transitioning into a new life as a wildlife volunteer. Whilst he wrote several text books for the teaching of geography and a handbook for teachers on the subject thinking skills - "Thinking for Learning" (NEP) - this is his first venture into writing about the world outside.

Insect Anatomy
Get a close-up look at the world of insects with a delightfully illustrated guide to the fascinating insects, bugs, arachnids, and other creatures that populate our planet by the billions. Millions of species of insects fly, crawl, dig, swarm, and eat on every continent. Our very existence depends on them; without pollinators, we would have no food, and without decomposers, the world would be covered in decaying plant and animal material. With her signature style, Julia Rothman delves into this incredible world, uncovering amazing facts about bees, beetles, butterflies, and so much more.
Animal Blues - Wildlife Poems
Animal Blues is a heartfelt poetry collection that captures the soulful voices of nature and the urgent plight of wildlife in the UK. Inspired by blues, soul, and protest music, author James speaks directly to his grandsons and future generations, expressing both the struggles of endangered animals and the hope for conservation. With echoes of Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, and Joni Mitchell, these poems offer a rhythmic tribute to animals and rivers, blending self-deprecating humour with powerful reflections on nature's beauty and resilience. Animal Blues is a poetic journey for those who feel the call of the wild and seek a brighter future for the natural world
The Skill of Traditional 'Spoor' Tracking 1980-1989
Following animals, reading their spoor (ground tracks), they leave behind and observing other bush disturbances left in their wake are commonly referred to in the art of tracking. Working alongside competent trackers has provided me with real-time observational knowledge of animal behaviour occurring, following what the animal was doing at the time of its passing, fully interpreted while in the process of being followed. Working with a genuinely seasoned tracker is exhilarating, informative and extremely productive, boosting management operation efficiency considerably, comparable to any modern follow-up IT contrivance developed. I'm not referring to the many self-acclaimed trackers that abound, but rather the very few dedicated, experienced individuals who have accumulated many hundreds of hours tracking all their lives, who routinely follow their quarry even over solid surfaces such as bare sheetrock, who never fail to locate their quarry, quickly unravelling deliberate antitracking measures undertaken by poachers in and out of a river, for example, seldom deterred by deliberate avoidance antitracking antics.
Strategies for the Capture and Translocation of Wildlife in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, has led the world with its innovative approaches to wildlife management, no less valid for game capture. From the advent of Operation Noah on Lake Kariba, attempting to rescue animals from the rising waters, the art and science of game capture emerged from humble beginnings. There was scant knowledge available worldwide wide and capture success fraught with significant mortalities. Through trial and error, strategies, equipment, and the potential for chemical restraint emerged, providing technology to move thousands of animals, reducing mortality significantly below 2%, efficiently.
The Owl Handbook
Charismatic, intriguing, and misunderstood: The Owl Handbook provides a beautifully photographed, thoughtfully researched, and accessible guide to these complex, captivating creatures. Spot an owl that's long been watching your every move and darker aspects of its reputation may spring to mind: harbinger of doom, guides through the spirit world, merciless bird of prey. Mythology and superstitions have projected our fear of the unknown onto these mostly night-dwelling creatures. But these wondrous birds are so much more than shadows or silent glides through the night. In The Owl Handbook, lifelong birding enthusiast John Shewey leads us through an exploration of owls' cultural impact as seen in folklore and mythology, provides in-depth investigations of 19 owls of North America and a survey of 200 owls across the globe, and gives advice on how to respectfully observe and protect these enigmatic birds, brought to life by hundreds of full-color photographs.
The effect of fire on the forest
Soil is a limited and non-renewable natural resource that performs multiple ecosystem or environmental services, including the regulation of biogeochemical cycles, carbon fixation, and water storage and filtration. A multitude of organisms live in it: microorganisms, numerous animal phyla and microflora species, making it the most biodiverse natural ecosystem in any region. Soil mesofauna, which include arthropods between 0.2 and 2 mm in size, such as mites and springtails, are particularly abundant. They are also sensitive to natural disturbances or those caused by human activities, which makes them bioindicators of soil quality and fertility. It is essential to investigate the disturbances that can affect these edaphic communities in order to understand the dynamics and state of forest ecosystems. This work aims to contribute to the study of the effect of fires on the forest floor, using as a bioindicator the alterations in the populations of springtails, the most relevant group of microarthropods in the edaphic environment.
Bob the Robin
The story of an incredible friendship between one man and a wild robin, and a beautiful celebration of Britain's favorite bird "When a robin appears, a loved one is near" In 2019, Tony Putman was working as a gardener in Edenbridge, Kent, when he noticed a bold robin sitting on a branch of an old plum tree. The robin glanced in his direction as he approached, but he didn't move, so Tony grabbed his camera and took a photo. This would be the first of hundreds of photos that Tony would take of Bob the robin - and the start of an extraordinary friendship that would last for years. As Tony shared his pictures on his social media account, Putman and Robin, he witnessed an outpouring the love - not just for Bob, but for robins everywhere, who populate our gardens with song and movement even on the direst winter days. In this book, Tony shares his touching journey with Bob, and tells the story of our unwavering affection for these magnificent creatures. This is an informative book about the life of a robin, as well as a beautiful love letter to these spirited and lively birds - who offer us a connection with nature, a moment of contact and a great source of comfort and joy.
Tortoise Husbandry and Welfare
Keeping captive tortoises healthy and well is a significant challenge. Because they are ectotherms, these reptiles are totally dependent upon external sources to maintain body temperature and therefore metabolic function. Their physical environment is vital for them to remain healthy, and as owners, we have to provide sufficient choice in the environment for them to be able to experience as near optimum conditions as we can. Covering all aspects of tortoise husbandry and welfare, this book advises on: - Suitable temperature ranges, light sources, humidity, substrate, space, and seasonal changes according to individual tortoise species;- Specific dietary requirements, and opportunities for expression of natural behaviours including reproduction.- Variety of environments, ranging across indoor and outdoor accommodation options, to achieve optimum conditions for tortoises in captivity. Written by a leading clinical animal behaviourist, this book is an important read for anyone involved in tortoise welfare, from students and zoo rescue staff, to pet owners and the veterinarians advising them.

Elephants and Their Fossil Relatives
The ultimate illustrated guide to elephants and their prehistoric relatives Today, only three species of elephants survive--the African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana), the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). However, these modern giants represent just a fraction of the vast and diverse order Proboscidea, which includes not only living elephants but also their many extinct relatives. Over the past 60 million years, proboscideans have evolved and adapted across five continents, giving rise to an astonishing variety of forms, from the massive, woolly-coated mammoths of the Ice Age to the diminutive, island-dwelling dwarf elephants. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of proboscidean biology and evolutionary history, shedding light on the remarkable diversity of these extraordinary mammals. It delves into the anatomical characteristics of every known species, from the towering steppe mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii) and the shovel-tusked Amebelodon to the semi-aquatic Moeritherium and the enigmatic Deinotherium. Readers will discover how these creatures developed an array of specialized adaptations, including variations in tusk shape and function, highly flexible trunks suited for different feeding strategies, and unique dental structures that allowed them to process a wide range of vegetation. Accompanied by stunning illustrations by Shu-yu Hsu, Elephants and Their Fossil Relatives brings these ancient giants back to life, offering a visually captivating and scientifically rigorous journey through their evolutionary past. Apes on the Edge
A moving story of survival and an eye-opening introduction to an extraordinary community of chimps and people. Fongoli chimpanzees are unique for many reasons. Their female hunters are the only apes that regularly hunt with tools, seeking out tiny bush babies with wooden spears. Unlike most other chimps, these apes fear neither water nor fire, using shallow pools to cool off in the Senegalese heat. Up to 90 percent of their home range burns annually--the result of human hunting or clearing for gold mining--and Fongoli chimpanzees have learned to predict the movement of such fires and to avoid them. The study of Fongoli chimps is also unique. While most primate research occurs in isolated reserves, Fongoli chimpanzees live alongside humans, and as primatologist and anthropologist Jill Pruetz reports, this shared habitat creates both challenges and opportunities. The issues faced by Fongoli chimpanzees--particularly food scarcity and environmental degradation--are also issues faced by their human neighbors. This connection is one reason Pruetz, who has studied Fongoli apes for over two decades, created the nonprofit Neighbor Ape in 2008 to provide for the welfare of the humans who share their landscape with apes. It is also why Pruetz decided to write this book, the first to offer readers a view of these chimps' lives and to explain the specific conservation efforts needed to help them. Incorporating stories from Pruetz's time in the field, including the compelling rescue of a young chimp from poachers, Apes on the Edge opens a fascinating window into primate research, conservation, and the inner workings of a very special population of our closest nonhuman relatives.

The Age of Deer
A masterful hybrid of nature writing and cultural studies that investigates our connection with deer--from mythology to biology, from forests to cities, from coexistence to control and extermination--and invites readers to contemplate the paradoxes of how humans interact with and shape the natural world Deer have been an important part of the world that humans occupy for millennia. They're one of the only large animals that can thrive in our presence. In the 21st century, our relationship is full of contradictions: We hunt and protect them, we cull them from suburbs while making them an icon of wilderness, we see them both as victims and as pests. But there is no doubt that we have a connection to deer: in mythology and story, in ecosystems biological and digital, in cities and in forests. Delving into the historical roots of these tangled attitudes and how they play out in the present, Erika Howsare observes scientists capture and collar fawns, hunters show off their trophies, a museum interpreter teaching American history while tanning a deer hide, an animal-control officer collecting the carcasses of deer killed by sharpshooters, and a woman bottle-raising orphaned fawns in her backyard. As she reports these stories, Howsare's eye is always on the bigger picture: Why do we look at deer in the ways we do, and what do these animals reveal about human involvement in the natural world? For readers of H is for Hawk and Fox & I, The Age of Deer offers a unique and intimate perspective on a very human relationship.
The ABCs of California's Native Bees
A Los Angeles Times Best Science Book of 2025Journey through the world of California native bees, one letter at a time."Krystle Hickman's travels across wild landscapes reveal rare and elusive pollinators, each one meticulously photographed and arranged in a brilliant A-to-Z tribute." --Olivia Messinger Carril, coauthor of The Bees in Your BackyardNational Geographic Explorer Krystle Hickman has spent a decade capturing exquisitely detailed photographs of native bees and making exciting discoveries about their behavior in the field. In her debut book of natural history, she offers an intimate look at the daily habits of rare and overlooked native bees in California: those cloaked in green or black or red, that live alone in the ground or sleep inside flowers, that invade nests and pillage resources like infinitesimal conquerors, or that, unlike more generalist honeybees, are devoted exclusively to the pollen of a single type of flower. A committed conservationist and community scientist who knows all too well how precarious the wellbeing of these insects is, Hickman shares her adventures in local native plant gardens and throughout the far reaches of California to bring the beauty of such diverse ecosystems into wondrous bee's-eye view. Meant for all curious readers, this collection of bee stories--one for each letter of the alphabet, matching the first letter of a bee's scientific name--will leave you both wowed and compelled to help save these fascinating beings and the lands they call home.

Didactic overview of sheep domestication
To highlight the importance of the process of teaching scientific disciplines in the system of learning and acquisition of knowledge, I began by studying, from a didactic point of view, a few subjects such as the epistemology of zootechnics and the domestication of animals. The aim is to be able to transmit scholarly knowledge to a skill through knowledge to be taught and knowledge taught. Hence the importance of clear, appropriate didactic transposition. Indeed, Helmer (1992) has proposed the following definition: "domestication is the control of an animal population by isolation of the herd with loss of panmixy, suppression of natural selection and application of artificial selection based on particular traits, either behavioral or structural. Living animals become the property of the human group and are entirely dependent on man".
The Arrogant Ape
A New York Times's Notable Book of 2025 An impassioned celebration of humility before the living world that leads us to a new understanding of other species--and ourselves Darwin considered humans one part of the web of life, not the apex of a natural hierarchy. Yet today many maintain that we are the most intelligent, virtuous, successful species that ever lived. This flawed thinking enables us to exploit the earth towards our own exclusive ends, throwing us into a perilous planetary imbalance. But is this view and way of life inevitable? The Arrogant Ape shows that human exceptionalism is an ideology that relies more on human culture than our biology, more on delusion and faith than on evidence. Harvard primatologist Christine Webb has spent years researching the rich social, emotional, and cognitive lives of our closest living relatives. She exposes the ways that many scientific studies are biased against other species and reveals underappreciated complexities of nonhuman life--from the language of songbirds and prairie dogs, to the cultures of chimpanzees and reef fishes, to the acumen of plants and fungi. With compelling stories and fresh research she gives us a paradigm-shifting way of looking at other organisms on their own terms, one that is revolutionizing our perception both of them and of ourselves. Critiques of human exceptionalism tend to focus on our moral obligation towards other species. They overlook what humanity also stands to gain by dismantling its illusions of uniqueness and superiority. This shift in perspective fills us with a sense of awe and satisfies one of our oldest and deepest desires to belong to the larger whole we inhabit. What's at stake is a better, sustainable way of life with the potential to heal and rejuvenate our shared planet.

Organic Feed Additives for Livestock
Feed additives (natural or synthetic) are formulations added to livestock rations to improve growth rates, reproductive and productive traits, feed efficiency, ruminal fermentation profiles, methane mitigation, digestion and absorption of nutrients, immunity, and overall health of the animal. Organic Feed Additives for Livestock will focus on the beneficial effects of organic feed additives and on food animals, including ruminants, poultry, fish, and more. It will also explore how these feed additives can benefit food animal production, reproduction, and health. Each chapter will cover the significance of an organic feed supplement, especially as an alternative to synthetic growth promoters, with topics including medicinal plants, cold pressed and essential oils, natural antioxidants, emulsifiers, acidifiers and organic acids, fibrolytic enzymes, organic minerals, probiotics, macro- and microalgae, organic nanoparticles, yeast and its derivatives, and bee pollen.Contributed by a range of livestock and aquaculture specialists from around the world, this book takes a holistic approach to explore how organic additives offer an efficient strategy to improve livestock productivity and health. This reference is an excellent resource for researchers and graduate students interested in animal agriculture, as well as veterinarians, animal nutritionists and breeders, and other livestock specialists. It will allow experts to stay up to date on organic options for livestock and serve as a starting point in generating new research ideas.
A Field Guide to the Butterflies of Romania
Through its geographical position, varied topography, particular climate and complex cultural history, Romania has managed to sustain enormously rich biodiversity. Traditional practices, which have survived longer than in most other parts of Europe, have allowed the preservation of large areas of natural habitat, little altered by human activity. All this is reflected in the breadth of lepidoptera encountered in the country - from the dazzling Freyer's Purple Emperor to the elusive Moorland Clouded Yellow, from the almost bird-like Great Banded Grayling to the diminutive Osiris Blue. This book considers all the species (and subspecies) of butterflies known to occur in Romania. This identification guide to the butterflies of Romania is set out in a format easy to understand not only by specialists but also for the more general naturalist or butterfly enthusiast. An expansive introduction covers the various life stages (ovum, larva, pupa and imago), biology and ecology, as well as protection and conservation, and butterfly research. The next section identifies the 14 most important habitat types frequented by butterflies in Romania. For each of the more than 200 species covered, information on taxonomy, identification, habitat, biology, conservation and distribution is presented. Each is illustrated with photographs from nature, primarily adult males and females, but also numerous images of the developmental stages. There follows a complete set of plates of prepared butterflies, displaying dorsal and ventral positions (upper and undersides) for both males and females. Finally, the male genital armature of several species are illustrated, primarily those difficult or impossible to identify using visual determination. The result is an attractive, practical and portable guide that not only helps identify the butterfly species of Romania, but also encourages the reader to more fully appreciate and protect them.
Elephants in the Hourglass
A moving and adventure-filled tale of one woman's quest for the truth about endangered Asian elephants and their evolving relationship with humans. Delving deep into an intricate web of unlikely heroes, power struggles, and living legends, Elephants in the Hourglass takes readers on an extraordinary journey of discovery. In her non-fiction debut, Kim Frank blends personal narrative, vivid descriptions, and meticulous research as she illuminates the ways we seek to survive on our rapidly changing planet. Like Jane Goodall or Dian Fossey before her, Kim is a female explorer who found her life completely changed as she was drawn deeper and deeper into the plight of the remarkable Asian elephant. For Kim, once she learned about the intense, multi-faceted, but little-known conflict between humans and elephants in North India, she was unable to rest until she had learned more and told this story to the outside world. This was a place and topic totally unknown to her. Up until that point, Kim was an ordinary mom and emerging writer. After a fraught divorce, she felt a need to recapture her own voice and expand her world, and so she set out to the Himalaya with the goal of telling a story worthy of National Geographic. What Kim experienced would change her life. It is far from a black and white story where the good guys and bad guys are immediately obvious. Not in this world of displaced habitats, exploding population growth, migration, and climate change. Filled with unforgettable characters and encounters with one of the most sensitive, intelligent, and awe-inspiring creatures on the planet, Elephants in the Hourglass will inspire readers to pursue their goals and be a force for change in unexpected places.
The Genius Bat
An awe-inspiring tour of bat world by the world's leading expert With nearly 1500 species, bats account for more than twenty percent of mammalian species. Safari to the Island of Trinidad
Islands have always been considered magical places, appearing on the horizon when sailors had already given up hope of survival. They have been emblems of the natural exoticism that characterizes the figurations of earthly paradises. They are places isolated by the sea, subject to it, in total harmony with nature. The sea, which is the cradle of life, has given the islands their best clothes and they are like outcrops of the spirit of the oceans. It is enough to reach them for man to feel in his whole body the energy they transmit. And among the islands, those of the tropics are like the first class of the ship of life, because they are also light and color. This is how I felt on my expedition to Trinidad Island, the largest island in the archipelago of Trinidad & Tobago. It was an excursion to the jungle of this island located at the southern end of the Antilles arch, at the southeastern limit of the Caribbean Sea, in front of the Orinoco River delta and north of Venezuela. It is a unique paradise of the Orinoco fauna, where you can find spiders, snakes, macaws, macaws, heels, hummingbirds, dances, ocelots, deer, jaguars, caimans, sloths, manatees, among others.

The Dinosaurs and Their Mysterious Demise
Explores the captivating history of dinosaurs, their reign, extinction, and presents a new theory on how certain species survived their cataclysmic end.The dinosaurs are a source of endless fascination, and each new generation is inspired and enchanted by images of these wondrous and awe-inspiring creatures that dominated the Earth eons of time ago. The smallest was the size of a chicken; the largest on record, the titanosaur Argentinosaurus huinculensis, weighed about 95 tons--fifteen times as much as an African bull elephant (today's largest terrestrial creature).Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for no less than 181 million years: about 600 times longer than Homo sapiens have existed on the planet (Homo sapiens is defined as the primate species to which modern humans belong: the first modern humans having evolved in Africa about 300,000 years ago).Today, the consensus is that the dinosaurs became extinct when a meteorite impacted with the Earth 66 million years ago, covering it with a thick layer of soot and throwing up enormous quantities of dust which caused the sky to darken, and photosynthesis on which all terrestrial animals ultimately depend for their survival to cease. The unanswered question, however, is how did mammals, reptiles, and birds (which are the only species of dinosaur to survive) escape this holocaust? An entirely new theory is put forward for the first time to explain this mysterious and intriguing phenomenon.
