An Introduction To The Harmonic Series And Logarithmic Integrals
This book provides a broad panel of results about the harmonic series and logarithmic integrals, some of which are, as far as I know, new in the mathematical literature. One goal of the book is to introduce the harmonic series in a way that will be approachable by anyone with a good knowledge of calculus-from high school students to researchers. The other goal is to present this book as a good reference resource for such series, as they are not commonly found in the standard textbooks and only very few books address them, apart from articles that are highly specialized and addressed in general to a small audience. The book will equip the reader with plenty of important tools that are necessary to solve (challenging) problems involving the harmonic series, and will also help the reader explore advanced results.
Conceptual Density Functional Theory and Its Application in the Chemical Domain
In this book, new developments based on conceptual density functional theory (CDFT) and its applications in chemistry are discussed. It also includes discussion of some applications in corrosion and conductivity and synthesis studies based on CDFT. The electronic structure principles--such as the electronegativity equalization principle, the hardness equalization principle, the electrophilicity equalization principle, and the nucleophilicity equalization principle, along studies based on these electronic structure principles--are broadly explained. In recent years some novel methodologies have been developed in the field of CDFT. These methodologies have been used to explore mutual relationships between the descriptors of CDFT, namely electronegativity, hardness, etc. The mutual relationship between the electronegativity and the hardness depend on the electronic configuration of the neutral atomic species. The volume attempts to cover almost all such methodology. Conceptual Density Function Theory and Its Application in the Chemical Domain will be an appropriate guide for research students as well as the supervisors in PhD programs. It will also be valuable resource for inorganic chemists, physical chemists, and quantum chemists. The reviews, research articles, short communications, etc., covered by this book will be appreciated by theoreticians as well as experimentalists.
Semitopological Vector Spaces
This new volume shows how it is possible to further develop and essentially extend the theory of operators in infinite-dimensional vector spaces, which plays an important role in mathematics, physics, information theory, and control theory. The book describes new mathematical structures, such as hypernorms, hyperseminorms, hypermetrics, semitopological vector spaces, hypernormed vector spaces, and hyperseminormed vector spaces. It develops mathematical tools for the further development of functional analysis and broadening of its applications. Exploration of semitopological vector spaces, hypernormed vector spaces, hyperseminormed vector spaces, and hypermetric vector spaces is the main topic of this book. A new direction in functional analysis, called quantum functional analysis, has been developed based on polinormed and multinormed vector spaces and linear algebras. At the same time, normed vector spaces and topological vector spaces play an important role in physics and in control theory. To make this book comprehendible for the reader and more suitable for students with some basic knowledge in mathematics, denotations and definitions of the main mathematical concepts and structures used in the book are included in the appendix, making the book useful for enhancing traditional courses of calculus for undergraduates, as well as for separate courses for graduate students. The material of Semitopological Vector Spaces: Hypernorms, Hyperseminorms and Operators is closely related to what is taught at colleges and universities. It is possible to use a definite number of statements from the book as exercises for students because their proofs are not given in the book but left for the reader.
Linear Operators and Their Essential Pseudospectra
Linear Operators and Their Essential Pseudospectra provides a comprehensive study of spectral theory of linear operators defined on Banach spaces. The central items of interest in the volume include various essential spectra, but the author also considers some of the generalizations that have been studied. In recent years, spectral theory has witnessed an explosive development. This volume presents a survey of results concerning various types of essential spectra and pseudospectra in a unified, axiomatic way and also discusses several topics that are new but which relate to the concepts and methods emanating from the book. The main topics include essential spectra, essential pseudospectra, structured essential pseudospectra, and their relative sets. This volume will be very useful for several researchers since it represents not only a collection of previously heterogeneous material but also includes discussions of innovation through several extensions. As the spectral theory of operators is an important part of functional analysis and has numerous applications in many areas of mathematics, the author suggests that some modest prerequisites from functional analysis and operator theory should be in place to be accessible to newcomers and graduate students of mathematics.
Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations
This is a book on optimal control problems (OCPs) for partial differential equations (PDEs) that evolved from a series of courses taught by the authors in the last few years at Politecnico di Milano, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The book covers the whole range spanning from the setup and the rigorous theoretical analysis of OCPs, the derivation of the system of optimality conditions, the proposition of suitable numerical methods, their formulation, their analysis, including their application to a broad set of problems of practical relevance. The first introductory chapter addresses a handful of representative OCPs and presents an overview of the associated mathematical issues. The rest of the book is organized into three parts: part I provides preliminary concepts of OCPs for algebraic and dynamical systems; part II addresses OCPs involving linear PDEs (mostly elliptic and parabolic type) and quadratic cost functions; part III deals with more general classes ofOCPs that stand behind the advanced applications mentioned above.Starting from simple problems that allow a "hands-on" treatment, the reader is progressively led to a general framework suitable to face a broader class of problems. Moreover, the inclusion of many pseudocodes allows the reader to easily implement the algorithms illustrated throughout the text. The three parts of the book are suitable to readers with variable mathematical backgrounds, from advanced undergraduate to Ph.D. levels and beyond. We believe that applied mathematicians, computational scientists, and engineers may find this book useful for a constructive approach toward the solution of OCPs in the context of complex applications.

Domination Games Played on Graphs
This concise monograph present the complete history of the domination game and its variants up to the most recent developments and will stimulate research on closely related topics, establishing a key reference for future developments. The crux of the discussion surrounds new methods and ideas that were developed within the theory, led by the imagination strategy, the Continuation Principle, and the discharging method of Bujt獺s, to prove results about domination game invariants. A toolbox of proof techniques is provided for the reader to obtain results on the domination game and its variants. Powerful proof methods such as the imagination strategy are presented. The Continuation Principle is developed, which provides a much-used monotonicity property of the game domination number. In addition, the reader is exposed to the discharging method of Bujt獺s. The power of this method was shown by improving the known upper bound, in terms of a graph's order, on the (ordinary) domination number of graphs with minimum degree between 5 and 50. The book is intended primarily for students in graph theory as well as established graph theorists and it can be enjoyed by anyone with a modicum of mathematical maturity. The authors include exact results for several families of graphs, present what is known about the domination game played on subgraphs and trees, and provide the reader with the computational complexity aspects of domination games. Versions of the games which involve only the "slow" player yield the Grundy domination numbers, which connect the topic of the book with some concepts from linear algebra such as zero-forcing sets and minimum rank. More than a dozen other related games on graphs and hypergraphs are presented in the book. In all these games there are problems waiting to be solved, so the area is rich for further research. The domination game belongs to the growing family of competitive optimization graph games. The game is played by two competitors who take turns adding a vertex to a set of chosen vertices. They collaboratively produce a special structure in the underlying host graph, namely a dominating set. The two players have complementary goals: one seeks to minimize the size of the chosen set while the other player tries to make it as large as possible. The game is not one that is either won or lost. Instead, if both players employ an optimal strategy that is consistent with their goals, the cardinality of the chosen set is a graphical invariant, called the game domination number of the graph. To demonstrate that this is indeed a graphical invariant, the game tree of a domination game played on a graph is presented for the first time in the literature.
The Fourier Transform
The Fourier transform is a fundamental tool in the physical sciences, with applications in communications theory, electronics, engineering, biophysics and quantum mechanics. In this brief book, the essential mathematics required to understand and apply Fourier analysis is explained. The tutorial style of writing, combined with over 60 diagrams, offers a visually intuitive and rigorous account of Fourier methods. Hands-on experience is provided in the form of simple examples, written in Python and Matlab computer code. Supported by a comprehensive Glossary and an annotated list of Further Readings, this represents an ideal introduction to the Fourier transform.

Pioneering the Octonion Cosmos II God-Space
This volume is Part II of Pioneering the Cosmos. It extends the presentation of features of Octonion Cosmology to make it a complete theory of the Cosmos. The beginning is the million dimension God-Space, from which the other octonion spaces (forming an octet), and their instances (particles), are derived. The spaces are shown to be atomic in the senses that they are all composed of lattices (honeycombs) of a set of symmetries that we call Dimension-32 Atoms. Each atom has a corresponding set of fermions that we call Fermion-32 Atoms. These atoms contain an SU(4) (or an SU(3)U(1)) symmetry. Octonion Cosmology naturally contains SU(4). The initial design of each octonion space had an octonionic space-time. In this book we transform octonionic space-times to real space-times plus a set of symmetries that interrelate the parts of fermion spectrums. We present the new connecting symmetries for a QUeST universe, an UTMOST Megaverse, and the Maxiverse. In the case of a QUeST universe these (broken) symmetries relate "Normal" and Dark fermion sectors. We embody these symmetries in an augmented Unified SuperStandard Theory (UST) that we call NEWUST. (UST was derived using Logic previously.) We show that the conventional form of symmetry breaking via the Higgs Mechanism is not sufficient. We introduce a new form of symmetry "splitting into factors" based on two types of inheritance. Octonion Cosmology supports hierarchies of nested space instances. We consider an example of these hierarchies. It clearly illustrates an analogy between Octonion Cosmology and an Object-Oriented C++ program. The Cosmos may be such a "program." Instances of octonion spaces, such as our universe, are "particles" that expand with time. This book presents a new formula for scale factors that describes expansion from the Big Bang to the present. It is based on a QED-like vacuum polarization that has similar parameters with the author's successful calculation of the Fine Structure Constant α. A view of the photon is presented showing that it is analogous to a frozen universe. Part of the photon "universe" connects to the ElectroWeak interactions; part of the photon universe connects to the Strong interaction and supports a ρ Vector Meson Dominance (VDM) connection.
Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Its Applications
This book consists of nine papers covering a number of basic ideas, concepts, and methods of nonlinear analysis, as well as some current research problems. Thus, the reader is introduced to the fascinating theory around Brouwer's fixed point theorem, to Granas' theory of topological transversality, and to some advanced techniques of critical point theory and fixed point theory. Other topics include discontinuous differential equations, new results of metric fixed point theory, robust tracker design problems for various classes of nonlinear systems, and periodic solutions in computer virus propagation models.
Nonlinear Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems
This Special Edition contains new results on Differential and Integral Equations and Systems, covering higher-order Initial and Boundary Value Problems, fractional differential and integral equations and applications, non-local optimal control, inverse, and higher-order nonlinear boundary value problems, distributional solutions in the form of a finite series of the Dirac delta function and its derivatives, asymptotic properties' oscillatory theory for neutral nonlinear differential equations, the existence of extremal solutions via monotone iterative techniques, predator-prey interaction via fractional-order models, among others. The Discrete Charm of the Machine
The genesis of the digital idea and why it transformed civilization A few short decades ago, we were informed by the smooth signals of analog television and radio; we communicated using our analog telephones; and we even computed with analog computers. Today our world is digital, built with zeros and ones. Why did this revolution occur? The Discrete Charm of the Machine explains, in an engaging and accessible manner, the varied physical and logical reasons behind this radical transformation. The spark of individual genius shines through this story of innovation: the stored program of Jacquard's loom; Charles Babbage's logical branching; Alan Turing's brilliant abstraction of the discrete machine; Harry Nyquist's foundation for digital signal processing; Claude Shannon's breakthrough insights into the meaning of information and bandwidth; and Richard Feynman's prescient proposals for nanotechnology and quantum computing. Ken Steiglitz follows the progression of these ideas in the building of our digital world, from the internet and artificial intelligence to the edge of the unknown. Are questions like the famous traveling salesman problem truly beyond the reach of ordinary digital computers? Can quantum computers transcend these barriers? Does a mysterious magical power reside in the analog mechanisms of the brain? Steiglitz concludes by confronting the moral and aesthetic questions raised by the development of artificial intelligence and autonomous robots. The Discrete Charm of the Machine examines why our information technology, the lifeblood of our civilization, became digital, and challenges us to think about where its future trajectory may lead.

Let Us Do Math- Basic Mathematics - Level Two
This book is a logical continuation of our manuscript "Let Us Do Math: Basic Mathematics Level I". It is mainly dedicated to above average students from high-school and first year university, and their mathematics instructors. This book provides first steps for many Mathematics Contests. It can be also considered as a reference book to practice and go deeply in understanding basic mathematics' concepts. Usually instructors do not have the time to cover a large number of situations, this is why our manuscript provides a smooth, easy to read, and self-contained reference that is rich with exercises. It contains about 314 solved problems.
Entropy and Diversity
The global biodiversity crisis is one of humanity's most urgent problems, but even quantifying biological diversity is a difficult mathematical and conceptual challenge. This book brings new mathematical rigour to the ongoing debate. It was born of research in category theory, is given strength by information theory, and is fed by the ancient field of functional equations. It applies the power of the axiomatic method to a biological problem of pressing concern, but it also presents new theorems that stand up as mathematics in their own right, independently of any application. The question 'what is diversity?' has surprising mathematical depth, and this book covers a wide breadth of mathematics, from functional equations to geometric measure theory, from probability theory to number theory. Despite this range, the mathematical prerequisites are few: the main narrative thread of this book requires no more than an undergraduate course in analysis.
Mathematics - Connection and Beyond
This book contains 11 chapters from various experts all over the world on mathematics education. It provides different perspective of how to establish connection within mathematics and beyond. The ideas are from different authors internationally and is practice-oriented, based on empirical studies conducted by the various authors. This is a good illustration of linking theory with practice.

Series and Products in the Development of Mathematics: Volume 2
This is the second volume of a two-volume work that traces the development of series and products from 1380 to 2000 by presenting and explaining the interconnected concepts and results of hundreds of unsung as well as celebrated mathematicians. Some chapters deal with the work of primarily one mathematician on a pivotal topic, and other chapters chronicle the progress over time of a given topic. This updated second edition of Sources in the Development of Mathematics adds extensive context, detail, and primary source material, with many sections rewritten to more clearly reveal the significance of key developments and arguments. Volume 1, accessible even to advanced undergraduate students, discusses the development of the methods in series and products that do not employ complex analytic methods or sophisticated machinery. Volume 2 examines more recent results, including deBranges' resolution of Bieberbach's conjecture and Nevanlinna's theory of meromorphic functions.

(In-)Stability of Differential Inclusions
Lyapunov methods have been and are still one of the main tools to analyze the stability properties of dynamical systems. In this monograph, Lyapunov results characterizing the stability and stability of the origin of differential inclusions are reviewed. To characterize instability and destabilizability, Lyapunov-like functions, called Chetaev and control Chetaev functions in the monograph, are introduced. Based on their definition and by mirroring existing results on stability, analogue results for instability are derived. Moreover, by looking at the dynamics of a differential inclusion in backward time, similarities and differences between stability of the origin in forward time and instability in backward time, and vice versa, are discussed. Similarly, the invariance of the stability and instability properties of the equilibria of differential equations with respect to scaling are summarized. As a final result, ideas combining control Lyapunov and control Chetaev functions to simultaneously guarantee stability, i.e., convergence, and instability, i.e., avoidance, are outlined. The work is addressed at researchers working in control as well as graduate students in control engineering and applied mathematics.
Transmutation Operators and Applications
Transmutation operators in differential equations and spectral theory can be used to reveal the relations between different problems, and often make it possible to transform difficult problems into easier ones. Accordingly, they represent an important mathematical tool in the theory of inverse and scattering problems, of ordinary and partial differential equations, integral transforms and equations, special functions, harmonic analysis, potential theory, and generalized analytic functions. This volume explores recent advances in the construction and applications of transmutation operators, while also sharing some interesting historical notes on the subject.
Paths
This open access book explores the amazing similarity between paths taken by people and many other things in life, and its impact on the way we live, teach and learn.Offering insights into the new scientific field of paths as part of the science of networks, it entertainingly describes the universal nature of paths in large networked structures. It also shows the amazing similarity in the ways humans and other - even nonliving - things navigate in a complex environment, to allow readers to easily grasp how paths emerge in many walks of life, and how they are navigated.Paths is based on the authors recent research in the area of paths on networks, which points to the possible birth of the new science of "paths" as a natural consequence 'and extension) of the science of "networks."The approach is essentially story-based, supported by scientific findings, interdisciplinary approaches, and at times, even philosophical points of view. It alsoincludes short illustrative anecdotes showing the amazing similarities between real-world paths and discusses their applications in science and everyday life.Paths will appeal to network scientists and to anyone interested in popular science. By helping readers to step away from the "networked" view of many recent popular scientific books and start to think of longer paths instead of individual links, it sheds light on these problems from a genuinely new perspective.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The path is the goal. The essence behind this short sentence is known to many people around the world, expressed through the interpretations of some of the greatest thinkers like Lao-Tze and Gandhi. It means that it is the journey that counts, not the destination. When speaking about such subjective and intangible things, philosophy and religion are some of the only approaches that are addressed. In this book, the authors address this conventional wisdom from the perspective of natural science. They explore a sequence of steps that leads the reader closer to the nature of paths and accompany him on the search for "the path to paths".

Modelling of Wireless Power Transfer
Wireless power transfer allows the transfer of energy from a transmitter to a receiver across an air gap, without any electrical connections. Technically, any device that needs power can become an application for wireless power transmission. The current list of applications is therefore very diverse, from low-power portable electronics and household devices to high-power industrial automation and electric vehicles. With the rise of IoT sensor networks and Industry 4.0, the presence of wireless energy transfer will only increase. In order to improve the current state of the art, models are being developed and tested experimentally. Such models allow simulating, quantifying, predicting, or visualizing certain aspects of the power transfer from transmitter(s) to receiver(s). Moreover, they often result in a better understanding of the fundamentals of the wireless link. This book presents a wonderful collection of peer-reviewed papers that focus on the modelling of wireless power transmission. It covers both inductive and capacitive wireless coupling and includes work on multiple transmitters and/or receivers.

Gravitation II
Values for the integration constants in the relativistic orbit equation are constructed in this book as functions of Schwarzschild radius and the planet maximum and minimum distances from the Sun. An algorithm to calculate the planet orbit according to relativity theory is presented in the book. A computer program that uses the algorithm has been listed in an appendix. Eight different cases have been calculated; the sun or black hole mass has been varied in these cases. The orbit graphs are presented in figures. The perihelion shift is presented as a function of the polar angle coordinate in every suitable calculation case. The text has been clarified with more than 20 graphs describing the form of the planet orbit.

Patterns in Mathematics Classroom Interaction
Classroom interaction has a significant influence on teaching and learning. It is through interaction that we solve problems, build ideas, make connections and develop our understanding. Patterns in Mathematics Classroom Interaction describes, exemplifies and considers the implications of patterns and structures of mathematics classroom interaction. Drawing on a Conversation Analytic approach, the book examines how the structures of interactions between teachers and students influence, enable, and constrain the mathematics that students are experiencing and learning in school. In particular, it considers the handling of difficulties or errors and the consequences on both the mathematics students are learning, and the learning of this mathematics. The various roles of silence and the treatment of knowledge and understanding within everyday classroom interactions also reveal the nature of mathematics as it is taught in different classrooms. Examples of students explaining, reasoning and justifying as they interact are also drawn upon to examine how the structures of classroom interaction support students to develop these discursive practices. The approach taken in Patterns in Mathematics Classroom Interaction enables the identification of not only what structures exist and pervade classroom discourse, but also how these structures influence teaching and learning. It is the understanding of how these structures affect students' experiences in the classroom that permits the use and development of practices that can support students' learning. This reflexive relationship between these structures of interactions and student actions and learning is central to the issues explored in this book, alongside the implications these may have for teachers' practice, and students' learning.

The international workshop on which this proceedings volume is based on brought together leading researchers in the field of elliptic and parabolic equations. Particular emphasis was put on the interaction between well-established scientists and emerging young mathematicians, as well as on exploring new connections between pure and applied mathematics. The volume contains material derived after the workshop taking up the impetus to continue collaboration and to incorporate additional new results and insights.
Calculus Reordered
A look at how calculus has evolved over hundreds of years and why calculus pedagogy needs to change Calculus Reordered tells the remarkable story of how calculus grew over centuries into the subject we know today. David Bressoud explains why calculus is credited to seventeenth-century figures Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz, how it was shaped by Italian philosophers such as Galileo Galilei, and how its current structure sprang from developments in the nineteenth century. Bressoud reveals problems with the standard ordering of its curriculum-limits, differentiation, integration, and series-and he argues that a pedagogy informed by the historical evolution of calculus represents a sounder way for students to learn this fascinating area of mathematics. From calculus's birth in the Hellenistic Eastern Mediterranean, India, and the Islamic Middle East, to its contemporary iteration, Calculus Reordered highlights the ways this essential tool of mathematics came to be.

From Quantum Paraelectric/Ferroelectric Perovskite Oxides to High Temperature Superconducting Copper Oxides -- In Honor of Professor K.A. M羹ller for His Lifework
With this book, we wish to honor the lifework of K. Alex M羹ller and present him with this book on the occasion of his 94th birthday. We are convinced that he will very much enjoy reading it. We would like to thank all contributors to this book, who addressed topics complementary and related to his work. The articles of the book represent the efforts in solid state physics - spanning more than 60 years - which have been groundbreaking in scientific and applied sciences. Many of the current hot topics are derived from this earlier work which has pioneered the way toward new experimental tools and/or refined techniques. From this point of view, the book presents, on one hand, a historical review and, on the other hand, a directory of possible future research.
