Sophie Germain
This biography of the mathematician, Sophie Germain, paints a rich portrait of a brilliant and complex woman, the mathematics she developed, her associations with Gauss, Legendre, and other leading researchers, and the tumultuous times in which she lived. Sophie Germain stood right between Gauss and Legendre, and both publicly recognized her scientific efforts. Unlike her female predecessors and contemporaries, Sophie Germain was an impressive mathematician and made lasting contributions to both number theory and the theories of plate vibrations and elasticity. She was able to walk with ease across the bridge between the fields of pure mathematics and engineering physics. Though isolated and snubbed by her peers, Sophie Germain was the first woman to win the prize of mathematics from the French Academy of Sciences. She is the only woman who contributed to the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. In this unique biography, Dora Musielak has done the impossible―she has chronicled Sophie Germain's brilliance through her life and work in mathematics, in a way that is simultaneously informative, comprehensive, and accurate.

The Unknown as an Engine for Science
This book explores the limits of our knowledge. The author shows how uncertainty and indefiniteness not only define the borders confining our understanding, but how they feed into the process of discovery and help to push back these borders. Starting with physics the author collects examples from economics, neurophysiology, history, ecology and philosophy. The first part shows how information helps to reduce indefiniteness. Understanding rests on our ability to find the right context, in which we localize a problem as a point in a network of connections. New elements must be combined with the old parts of the existing complex knowledge system, in order to profit maximally from the information. An attempt is made to quantify the value of information by its ability to reduce indefiniteness. The second part explains how to handle indefiniteness with methods from fuzzy logic, decision theory, hermeneutics and semiotics. It is not sufficient that the new element appears in an experiment, one also has to find a theoretical reason for its existence. Indefiniteness becomes an engine of science, which gives rise to new ideas.

Partial Differential Equations in Ecology
Partial differential equations (PDEs) have been used in theoretical ecology research for more than eighty years. Nowadays, along with a variety of different mathematical techniques, they remain as an efficient, widely used modelling framework; as a matter of fact, the range of PDE applications has even become broader. This volume presents a collection of case studies where applications range from bacterial systems to population dynamics of human riots.
Mathematics
Is 1+1 always 2? Well some would say yes and others would ask, "what else could it be?" The answer lies within the understanding of productive struggle. For those educators that lead their students in the direction to the answer they want them to achieve, 1 + 1 will always give you the value of 2. However, if you are the type of educator that believes your students can see beyond the obvious and can discover for themselves that the answer is not always starring them in the face, then you are the type of educator that knows the art of perseverance. It will take some problem solving, foundational skills, getting to know more than just their names, and most importantly, a shift in thinking. Then, you will find that 1 + 1 just may give you so much more than 2. The "struggle is real" when it comes to getting students to see the benefit of working hard. Discover how to concentrate more on the process and the prize will be worth the work!

Graph Theory
Graph Theory: An Introduction to Proofs, Algorithms, and ApplicationsGraph theory is the study of interactions, conflicts, and connections. The relationship between collections of discrete objects can inform us about the overall network in which they reside, and graph theory can provide an avenue for analysis. This text, for the first undergraduate course, will explore major topics in graph theory from both a theoretical and applied viewpoint. Topics will progress from understanding basic terminology, to addressing computational questions, and finally ending with broad theoretical results. Examples and exercises will guide the reader through this progression, with particular care in strengthening proof techniques and written mathematical explanations. Current applications and exploratory exercises are provided to further the reader's mathematical reasoning and understanding of the relevance of graph theory to the modern world.FeaturesThe first chapter introduces graph terminology, mathematical modeling using graphs, and a review of proof techniques featured throughout the book The second chapter investigates three major route problems: eulerian circuits, hamiltonian cycles, and shortest paths. The third chapter focuses entirely on trees - terminology, applications, and theory. Four additional chapters focus around a major graph concept: connectivity, matching, coloring, and planarity. Each chapter brings in a modern application or approach. Hints and Solutions to selected exercises provided at the back of the book. AuthorKarin R. Saoub is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. She earned her PhD in mathematics from Arizona State University and BA from Wellesley College. Her research focuses on graph coloring and on-line algorithms applied to tolerance graphs. She is also the author of A Tour Through Graph Theory, published by CRC Press.
Learning from Nature. Using Genetic Algorithms for Inventory Optimisation
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Mathematics - Applied Mathematics, grade: 1,00, University of Augsburg (Quantitative Methods), language: English, abstract: A battery of approaches has been applied by researchers and practitioners in the field of inventory optimisation to find optimal inventory policies that can drive the success of businesses of various industries. One such approach is based on the use of genetic algorithms, a multi-purpose subclass of evolutionary algorithms that imitate the prin- ciples of evolution to solve combinatorial problems. In this thesis, we extensively explore the theoretical background of inventory optimisation as well as genetic algorithms before we develop a four-stage serial supply chain model and implement a genetic algorithm for base-stock level optimisation.

Oscar Zariski
Oscar Zariski, one of the most eminent mathematicians of our time, climaxed a distinguished career by receiving the National Medal of Science. He has enriched mathematics, particularly in algebraic geometry and modern algebra, by numerous and fundamental papers. This volume is the first of four in which these papers are available in collected form.By introducing ideas from abstract algebra into algebraic geometry, Zariski undertook to rewrite its foundations completely, taking an approach that made no use whatsoever of topological or convergent power series methods and that made no appeal to vague geometric intuition. The most important characteristic of this approach toward algebraic geometry, and in particular toward the problem of resolution of singularities, is that it uses the available power of modern algebra as fully as possible not only as a source of techniques in each step of solving a specific problem but also in reformulating the problem at a fundamental level. Professor Hironaka writes, "By this type of fundamental approach (not to mention specific techniques he invented to overcome specific difficulties in the problem), he made it much easier for other mathematicians in later works to follow the tracks and make further progress."The present work contains 10 papers on foundations and 9 on the resolution of singularities that were first published between 1937 and 1967. In them, new methods are introduced that enabled Zariski to study algebraic geometry over arbitrary fields of coefficients. This broader outlook made it possible to solve certain classical problems using ideal theory and the theory of valuations that had long been regarded as too difficult to be handled.Among the basic problems whose solution is found in these papers are the local uniformization of all algebraic varieties, the reduction of singularities of 2- and 3-dimensional varieties, the introduction of the concept of normal variety which is now universally used, and the proof of "Zariski's Main Theorem.""Oscar Zariski: Collected Papers" is part of the series Mathematicians of Our Time, edited by Gian-Carlo Rota.
Oscar Zariski
This is the second of four volumes that will eventually present the full corpus of Zariski's mathematical contributions. Like the first volume (subtitled Foundations of Algebraic Geometry and Resolution of Singularities and edited by H. Hironaka and D. Mumford), it is divided into two parts, each devoted to a large but circumscribed area of research activity. The first part, containing eight papers introduced by Artin, deals with the theory of formal holomorphic functions on algebraic varieties over fields of any characteristic. The primary concern, in Zariski's words, is "analytic properties of an algebraic variety V, either in the neighborhood of a point (strictly local theory) or - and this is the deeper aspect of the theory - in the neighborhood of an algebraic subvariety of V (semiglobal theory)."Mumford surveys the ten papers reprinted in the second part. These deal with linear systems and the Riemann-Roch theorem and its applications, again in arbitrary characteristic. The applications are primarily to algebraic surfaces and include minimal models and characterization of rational or ruled surfaces.

Introduction to Real Analysis
This classic textbook has been used successfully by instructors and students for nearly three decades. This timely new edition offers minimal yet notable changes while retaining all the elements, presentation, and accessible exposition of previous editions. A list of updates is found in the Preface to this edition. This text is based on the author's experience in teaching graduate courses and the minimal requirements for successful graduate study. The text is understandable to the typical student enrolled in the course, taking into consideration the variations in abilities, background, and motivation. Chapters one through six have been written to be accessible to the average student, w hile at the same time challenging the more talented student through the exercises.Chapters seven through ten assume the students have achieved some level of expertise in the subject. In these chapters, the theorems, examples, and exercises require greater sophistication and mathematical maturity for full understanding. In addition to the standard topics the text includes topics that are not always included in comparable texts. Chapter 6 contains a section on the Riemann-Stieltjes integral and a proof of Lebesgue's t heorem providing necessary and sufficient conditions for Riemann integrability. Chapter 7 also includes a section on square summable sequences and a brief introduction to normed linear spaces. C hapter 8 contains a proof of the Weierstrass approximation theorem using the method of aapproximate identities. The inclusion of Fourier series in the text allows the student to gain some exposure to this important subject. The final chapter includes a detailed treatment of Lebesgue measure and the Lebesgue integral, using inner and outer measure. The exercises at the end of each section reinforce the concepts. Notes provide historical comments or discuss additional topics.
Abstract Parabolic Evolution Equations and Lojasiewicz-Simon Inequality I
The classical Lojasiewicz gradient inequality (1963) was extended by Simon (1983) to the infinite-dimensional setting, now called the Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality. This book presents a unified method to show asymptotic convergence of solutions to a stationary solution for abstract parabolic evolution equations of the gradient form by utilizing this Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality. In order to apply the abstract results to a wider class of concrete nonlinear parabolic equations, the usual Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality is extended, which is published here for the first time. In the second version, these abstract results are applied to reaction-diffusion equations with discontinuous coefficients, reaction-diffusion systems, and epitaxial growth equations. The results are also applied to the famous chemotaxis model, i.e., the Keller-Segel equations even for higher-dimensional ones.

Mathematiklernen Mit Digitalen Medien an Der Hochschule
Was sind erfolgreiche Gestaltungskonzepte f羹r digitale Instruktionsformate?
Technology-Assisted Guided Discovery to Support Learning
Technology is becoming more and more integrated in mathematics teaching and the use of technology is explicitly demanded by the curricula. Technology can be for example integrated while conceptualizing parameters of quadratic functions. In this thesis three technical visualizations (classic function plotter, drag mode, and sliders) for the manipulation of parameters of quadratic functions shall be compared with an access without the possibility of technical visualization. For this purpose, a Guided Discovery environment was developed, which was conducted in an intervention study with 14 classes of grade 9 (N=383). Different strengths and weaknesses of the individual visualizations in favor of the dynamic visualizations by drag mode and slider are shown. Also, different potentials and constraints of the use of technology are visible, for example the students use the technology to test their own hypotheses that were generated through the use of technology. The author Lisa G繹bel completed her dissertation as a research assistant under Prof. Dr. B瓣rbel Barzel in the Mathematics Education department at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her interests include functional thinking and the use of technology in mathematics teaching.
Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory
This definitive synthesis of mathematician Gregory Margulis's research brings together leading experts to cover the breadth and diversity of disciplines Margulis's work touches upon. This edited collection highlights the foundations and evolution of research by widely influential Fields Medalist Gregory Margulis. Margulis is unusual in the degree to which his solutions to particular problems have opened new vistas of mathematics; his ideas were central, for example, to developments that led to the recent Fields Medals of Elon Lindenstrauss and Maryam Mirzhakhani. Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory introduces these areas, their development, their use in current research, and the connections between them. Divided into four broad sections--"Arithmeticity, Superrigidity, Normal Subgroups"; "Discrete Subgroups"; "Expanders, Representations, Spectral Theory"; and "Homogeneous Dynamics"--the chapters have all been written by the foremost experts on each topic with a view to making them accessible both to graduate students and to experts in other parts of mathematics. This was no simple feat: Margulis's work stands out in part because of its depth, but also because it brings together ideas from different areas of mathematics. Few can be experts in all of these fields, and this diversity of ideas can make it challenging to enter Margulis's area of research. Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory provides one remedy to that challenge.
Invitation to Linear Programming and Game Theory
Written in a conversational tone, this classroom-tested text introduces the fundamentals of linear programming and game theory, showing readers how to apply serious mathematics to practical real-life questions by modelling linear optimization problems and strategic games. The treatment of linear programming includes two distinct graphical methods. The game theory chapters include a novel proof of the minimax theorem for 2x2 zero-sum games. In addition to zero-sum games, the text presents variable-sum games, ordinal games, and n-player games as the natural result of relaxing or modifying the assumptions of zero-sum games. All concepts and techniques are derived from motivating examples, building in complexity, which encourages students to think creatively and leads them to understand how the mathematics is applied. With no prerequisite besides high school algebra, the text will be useful to motivated high school students and undergraduates studying business, economics, mathematics, and the social sciences.
Assessing Complexity in Physiological Systems through Biomedical Signals Analysis
Complexity is a ubiquitous phenomenon in physiology that allows living systems to adapt to external perturbations. Fractal structures, self-organization, nonlinearity, interactions at different scales, and interconnections among systems through anatomical and functional networks, may originate complexity. Biomedical signals from physiological systems may carry information about the system complexity useful to identify physiological states, monitor health, and predict pathological events. Therefore, complexity analysis of biomedical signals is a rapidly evolving field aimed at extracting information on the physiological systems. This book consists of 16 contributions from authors with a strong scientific background in biomedical signals analysis. It includes reviews on the state-of-the-art of complexity studies in specific medical applications, new methods to improve complexity quantifiers, and novel complexity analyses in physiological or clinical scenarios. It presents a wide spectrum of methods investigating the entropic properties, multifractal structure, self-organized criticality, and information dynamics of biomedical signals touching upon three physiological areas: the cardiovascular system, the central nervous system, the heart-brain interactions. The book is aimed at experienced researchers in signal analysis and presents the latest trends in the complexity methods in physiology and medicine with the hope of inspiring future works advancing this fascinating area of research.

The conference's focus and the contents of the papers reflect Luigi's various research interests in the course of his long and extremely prolific career at Torino University.
Modulation Spaces
This monograph serves as a much-needed, self-contained reference on the topic of modulation spaces. By gathering together state-of-the-art developments and previously unexplored applications, readers will be motivated to make effective use of this topic in future research. Because modulation spaces have historically only received a cursory treatment, this book will fill a gap in time-frequency analysis literature, and offer readers a convenient and timely resource.Foundational concepts and definitions in functional, harmonic, and real analysis are reviewed in the first chapter, which is then followed by introducing modulation spaces. The focus then expands to the many valuable applications of modulation spaces, such as linear and multilinear pseudodifferential operators, and dispersive partial differential equations. Because it is almost entirely self-contained, these insights will be accessible to a wide audience of interested readers.Modulation Spaces will bean ideal reference for researchers in time-frequency analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations. It will also appeal to graduate students and seasoned researchers who seek an introduction to the time-frequency analysis of nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations.

Nevanlinna Theory and Its Relation to Diophantine Approximation
This book describes the theories and developments in Nevanlinna theory and Diophantine approximation. Although these two subjects belong to the different areas: one in complex analysis and one in number theory, it has been discovered that a number of striking similarities exist between these two subjects. A growing understanding of these connections has led to significant advances in both fields. Outstanding conjectures from decades ago are being solved.Over the past 20 years since the first edition appeared, there have been many new and significant developments. The new edition greatly expands the materials. In addition, three new chapters were added. In particular, the theory of algebraic curves, as well as the algebraic hyperbolicity, which provided the motivation for the Nevanlinna theory.
Bayesian and High-Dimensional Global Optimization
Accessible to a variety of readers, this book is of interest to specialists, graduate students and researchers in mathematics, optimization, computer science, operations research, management science, engineering and other applied areas interested in solving optimization problems. Basic principles, potential and boundaries of applicability of stochastic global optimization techniques are examined in this book. A variety of issues that face specialists in global optimization are explored, such as multidimensional spaces which are frequently ignored by researchers. The importance of precise interpretation of the mathematical results in assessments of optimization methods is demonstrated through examples of convergence in probability of random search. Methodological issues concerning construction and applicability of stochastic global optimization methods are discussed, including the one-step optimal average improvement method based on a statistical model of the objective function. A significant portion of this book is devoted to an analysis of high-dimensional global optimization problems and the so-called 'curse of dimensionality'. An examination of the three different classes of high-dimensional optimization problems, the geometry of high-dimensional balls and cubes, very slow convergence of global random search algorithms in large-dimensional problems, and poor uniformity of the uniformly distributed sequences of points are included in this book.
Risks and Choices
Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. -T. S. Eliot We all take risks. Individually, we may decide to marry or just leave the house. Such decisions are often made subjectively without any quantitative analysis. Communities take risks when they decide not to build protection against flooding. Nations take risks when they invest in other countries or go to war. The human race take risk with its acceptance of the balance of nuclear power or global warming as a policy for peace. The acceptance of risk by individuals is often very different from the acceptance of the same type of risk by groups. This book discusses different aspects of risk together with some choices and presents examples to enlighten the reader. The author has written books on topics such as earthquakes hazard assessment and risk analysis.

Science of Learning Mathematical Proofs, The: An Introductory Course
College students struggle with the switch from thinking of mathematics as a calculation based subject to a problem solving based subject. This book describes how the introduction to proofs course can be taught in a way that gently introduces students to this new way of thinking. This introduction utilizes recent research in neuroscience regarding how the brain learns best. Rather than jumping right into proofs, students are first taught how to change their mindset about learning, how to persevere through difficult problems, how to work successfully in a group, and how to reflect on their learning. With these tools in place, students then learn logic and problem solving as a further foundation.Next various proof techniques such as direct proofs, proof by contraposition, proof by contradiction, and mathematical induction are introduced. These proof techniques are introduced using the context of number theory. The last chapter uses Calculus as a way for students to apply the proof techniques they have learned.
