Time-Inconsistent Control Theory with Finance Applications

This book is devoted to problems of stochastic control and stopping that are time inconsistent in the sense that they do not admit a Bellman optimality principle. These problems are cast in a game-theoretic framework, with the focus on subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium strategies. The general theory is illustrated with a number of finance applications.In dynamic choice problems, time inconsistency is the rule rather than the exception. Indeed, as Robert H. Strotz pointed out in his seminal 1955 paper, relaxing the widely used ad hoc assumption of exponential discounting gives rise to time inconsistency. Other famous examples of time inconsistency include mean-variance portfolio choice and prospect theory in a dynamic context. For such models, the very concept of optimality becomes problematic, as the decision maker's preferences change over time in a temporally inconsistent way. In this book, a time-inconsistent problem is viewed as a non-cooperative game between the agent's currentand future selves, with the objective of finding intrapersonal equilibria in the game-theoretic sense. A range of finance applications are provided, including problems with non-exponential discounting, mean-variance objective, time-inconsistent linear quadratic regulator, probability distortion, and market equilibrium with time-inconsistent preferences. Time-Inconsistent Control Theory with Finance Applications offers the first comprehensive treatment of time-inconsistent control and stopping problems, in both continuous and discrete time, and in the context of finance applications. Intended for researchers and graduate students in the fields of finance and economics, it includes a review of the standard time-consistent results, bibliographical notes, as well as detailed examples showcasing time inconsistency problems. For the reader unacquainted with standard arbitrage theory, an appendix provides a toolbox of material needed for the book.

Testing statistical hypotheses using parametric tests

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Mathematics - Statistics, grade: 1,3, language: English, abstract: The pandemic has spread during the last two years dramatically. In Germany alone roughly 25,66 million confirmed cases and 137 348 confirmed Corona deaths were documented. Interestingly the highest number of confirmed cases was around 1,6 million on the 21st March of 2022 while the confirmed death counts were at 1 520 in Germany at the same day. Conversely, this means that the counted deaths are roughly 1 000 times lower than the infection levels, while the highest death count was detected at the 14th of December in 2020 with a value of 6 410 with roughly 170 00 confirmed cases. Meaning that around 27 times less deaths were confirmed in comparison to infection cases. The decrease of Corona deaths may be caused by the introduction of the Corona vaccinations. With the help of the accumulated data during the pandemic, the effect of the vaccination can be tested against the hospitalization values of Corona patients with statistical tests (Robert-Koch Institut, 2022). The test does indirectly adress the issue towards the decreasing Corona deaths with increasing infection cases. The increasing value of confirmed cases clearly shows, that the vaccination does not inhibit the infection, but somehow may have an weakening effect on the course of the disease. The approach mainly focus on different vaccination status and age groups of hospitalized Corona patients in Germany. Not included are factors like the Corona variation and the specific vaccines. Statistical tests to address such questions are parametric tests, which are powerful tools to evaluate data following a normal distribution. Within the assignment, two parametric tests are presented (pearson correlation coefficient and one-way ANOVA), while the one-way ANOVA was chosen to adress the question of interest desribed above. Note Taking Activities in E-Learning Environments

Optimization in Banach Spaces

The book is devoted to the study of constrained minimization problems on closed and convex sets in Banach spaces with a Frechet differentiable objective function. Such problems are well studied in a finite-dimensional space and in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. When the space is Hilbert there are many algorithms for solving optimization problems including the gradient projection algorithm which is one of the most important tools in the optimization theory, nonlinear analysis and their applications. An optimization problem is described by an objective function and a set of feasible points. For the gradient projection algorithm each iteration consists of two steps. The first step is a calculation of a gradient of the objective function while in the second one we calculate a projection on the feasible set. In each of these two steps there is a computational error. In our recent research we show that the gradient projection algorithm generates a good approximate solution, if all the computational errors are bounded from above by a small positive constant. It should be mentioned that the properties of a Hilbert space play an important role. When we consider an optimization problem in a general Banach space the situation becomes more difficult and less understood. On the other hand such problems arise in the approximation theory. The book is of interest for mathematicians working in optimization. It also can be useful in preparation courses for graduate students. The main feature of the book which appeals specifically to this audience is the study of algorithms for convex and nonconvex minimization problems in a general Banach space. The book is of interest for experts in applications of optimization to the approximation theory.In this book the goal is to obtain a good approximate solution of the constrained optimization problem in a general Banach space under the presence of computational errors. It is shown that the algorithm generates a good approximate solution, if the sequence of computational errors is bounded from above by a small constant. The book consists of four chapters. In the first we discuss several algorithms which are studied in the book and prove a convergence result for an unconstrained problem which is a prototype of our results for the constrained problem. In Chapter 2 we analyze convex optimization problems. Nonconvex optimization problems are studied in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4 we study continuous algorithms for minimization problems under the presence of computational errors. The algorithm generates a good approximate solution, if the sequence of computational errors is bounded from above by a small constant. The book consists of four chapters. No statistical training beyond a first course in statistics is required, but some knowledge of, or some interest in, the R programming language is assumed.

This book discusses a link between statistical theory and quantum theory based on the concept of epistemic processes. The latter are processes, such as statistical investigations or quantum mechanical measurements, that can be used to obtain knowledge about something. Various topics in quantum theory are addressed, including the construction of a Hilbert space from reasonable assumptions and an interpretation of quantum states. Separate derivations of the Born formula and the one-dimensional Schr繹dinger equation are given. In concrete terms, a Hilbert space can be constructed under some technical assumptions associated with situations where there are two conceptual variables that can be seen as maximally accessible. Then to every accessible conceptual variable there corresponds an operator on this Hilbert space, and if the variables take a finite number of values, the eigenspaces/eigenvectors of these operators correspond to specific questions in nature together with sharp answers to these questions. This paves a new way to the foundations of quantum theory. Optimal Control Problems Arising in Mathematical Economics

This book is devoted to the study of two large classes of discrete-time optimal control problems arising in mathematical economics. Nonautonomous optimal control problems of the first class are determined by a sequence of objective functions and sequence of constraint maps. They correspond to a general model of economic growth. We are interested in turnpike properties of approximate solutions and in the stability of the turnpike phenomenon under small perturbations of objective functions and constraint maps. The second class of autonomous optimal control problems corresponds to another general class of models of economic dynamics which includes the Robinson-Solow-Srinivasan model as a particular case. In Chap. 1 we discuss turnpike properties for a large class of discrete-time optimal control problems studied in the literature and for the Robinson-Solow-Srinivasan model. In Chap. 2 we introduce the first class of optimal control problems and study its turnpike property. This class of problems is also discussed in Chaps. 3-6. In Chap. 3 we study the stability of the turnpike phenomenon under small perturbations of the objective functions. Analogous results for problems with discounting are considered in Chap. 4. In Chap. 5 we study the stability of the turnpike phenomenon under small perturbations of the objective functions and the constraint maps. Analogous results for problems with discounting are established in Chap. 6. The results of Chaps. 5 and 6 are new. The second class of problems is studied in Chaps. 7-9. In Chap. 7 we study the turnpike properties. The stability of the turnpike phenomenon under small perturbations of the objective functions is established in Chap. 8. In Chap. 9 we establish the stability of the turnpike phenomenon under small perturbations of the objective functions and the constraint maps. The results of Chaps. 8 and 9 are new. In Chap. 10 we study optimal control problems related to a model of knowledge-based endogenous economic growth and show the existence of trajectories of unbounded economic growth and provide estimates for the growth rate.

Pupil Reactions in Response to Human Mental Activity

This book focuses on a development for assessing mental changes using eye pupil reactions, namely extracting emotional change from the response to evaluate the viewer's interest in visual information. The pupil of the eye reacts to both brightness and emotional state, including interest, enjoyment, and mental workload. Because pupillary change is a biological signal, various artifacts influence measurements of eye images. Technical procedures are required to extract mental activities from pupillary changes, and they are summarized here step by step, although some procedures contain earlier techniques such as analog video processing. This study examines the possibility of estimating the viewer's interest and enjoyment of viewing movies by measuring the dynamic pupillary changes, blinking, and subjective interest responses. In evaluation of pupil size, there was a significant difference in pupil size between the higher and the lower shot for the degree of subject interest response in each kind of movies. The first part of the book shows a pupil reaction model for brightness changes to extract mental activities. Pupil reactions were observed for various visual stimuli in brightness changes. With regard to the characteristics of pupillary changes, a model with a three-layer neural network was developed and the performance was evaluated. Characteristics of pupil reactions during model development are summarized here. The second part examines the possibility of estimating the viewer's interest and enjoyment of television programs by measuring dynamic pupillary changes, blinking, and subjective interest responses. The final part describes a development of estimation model of pupil size for blink artifact. The model development was able to estimate pupillary changes and pupil size while the viewer was blinking and was applied to pupillary changes in viewing television programs.

For this reason, the book contains a veiled invitation to the reader to familiarize with the programing language R. In the appendix, there are a few of the most frequently used operations and the text is sprinkled with (less than optimal) R codes. Nowadays one can do on a laptop simulations and computations we could only dream as an undergraduate in the past. This is a book written by a probability outsider. That brings along a bit of freshness together with certain 'naiveties'.

Mathematical Tools for Neuroscience

This book provides a brief but accessible introduction to a set of related, mathematical ideas that have proved useful in understanding the brain and behaviour. If you record the eye movements of a group of people watching a riverside scene then some will look at the river, some will look at the barge by the side of the river, some will look at the people on the bridge, and so on, but if a duck takes off then everybody will look at it. How come the brain is so adept at processing such biological objects? In this book it is shown that brains are especially suited to exploiting the geometric properties of such objects. Central to the geometric approach is the concept of a manifold, which extends the idea of a surface to many dimensions. The manifold can be specified by collections of n-dimensional data points or by the paths of a system through state space. Just as tangent planes can be used to analyse the local linear behaviour of points on a surface, so the extension to tangent spaces can be used to investigate the local linear behaviour of manifolds. The majority of the geometric techniques introduced are all about how to do things with tangent spaces.Examples of the geometric approach to neuroscience include the analysis of colour and spatial vision measurements and the control of eye and arm movements. Additional examples are used to extend the applications of the approach and to show that it leads to new techniques for investigating neural systems. An advantage of following a geometric approach is that it is often possible to illustrate the concepts visually and all the descriptions of the examples are complemented by comprehensively captioned diagrams.The book is intended for a reader with an interest in neuroscience who may have been introduced to calculus in the past but is not aware of the many insights obtained by a geometric approach to the brain. Appendices contain brief reviews of the required background knowledge in neuroscience and calculus.
