Web Hosting Performance Measurement. Approach of a Web Hosting Benchmark in Times of Virtualization
Master's Thesis in the subject Computer Science - General, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, an approach for evaluating the performance of web hosting solutions is developed to facilitate the comparison of offerings from different providers and aid companies in choosing a web hosting service. The focus of the research is on identifying and investigating methodologies for collecting reproducible performance metrics within the constraints of common virtualized web hosting environments, using only PHP and MySQL functions. A comprehensive review of existing literature and research in web development and web hosting provides the theoretical basis for benchmarking web servers and measuring web performance. Industry expert interviews supplement this approach with practical experience and best practices. The analysis of commonly used benchmarks identified in the interviews showed that well-established benchmarks and web server load testing tools were infeasible due to the lack of command line interface access in shared and managed hosting environments. Benchmarks relying solely on PHP and MySQL functions appear promising, but they do not account for all relevant aspects and cannot incorporate external factors. External load testing tools and page speed tools were found to cover aspects not considered by server-side benchmarks, such as caching mechanisms and networking. The research also highlights the need to evaluate website loading speed and back-end administrative interface performance separately, as they are both relevant to customers but are affected differently by caching mechanisms. The integration of these data sources is recommended for a comprehensive and meaningful analysis. The moral economy of mobile phones implies a field of shifting relations among consumers, companies and state actors, all of whom have their own ideas about what is good, fair and just. Improving Risk Assessment from the Perspective of Multi-Criteria Decision-Making
Failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) is one of the most powerful reliability analysis techniques for identifying and preventing potential risks across various fields. Current FMEA methods, while effective, still present several shortcomings. First, the crisp numbers cannot effectively elicit experts' fuzzy evaluations. Second, the weight of risk factors (i.e., occurrence, severity and detection) are assumed to be equal, which cannot reflect their different importance. Third, the traditional calculation method for risk priority is coarse and lack practical implications. There may exist the situation that two failure modes have the same risk priority number but with different risk levels. To improve the performance of FMEA, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods have been employed to support risk evaluation and prioritization in recent years. This book proposes a novel FMEA method by exploring several MCDM techniques. Benefiting from these techniques, the traditional FMEA method can be improved from the above mentioned aspects. First, the ELICIT linguistic model is employed to generate group risk assessments under uncertainty, which can better model experts' uncertain expressions. Then, grey relation analysis (GRA) is incorporated into the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method to objectively determine the weight of risk factors. Afterward, the traditional outranking method is generalized into the ELICIT environment to prioritize the failure modes. Finally, a case study of FMEA for electro-mechanical actuators is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Process Based Unification for Multi-model Software Process Improvement
Many different quality approaches are available in the software industry. Some of the approaches, such as ISO 9001 are not software specific, i.e. they define general requirements for an organization and they can be used at any company. Others, such as Automotive SPICE have been derived from a software-specific approach and can be used for improving particular (in this case automotive) processes. Some are created to improve development processes (e.g. CMMI for Development), others focus on services (e.g. CMMI for Services), and again others are related to particular processes such as software testing (e.g. TMMi) or resource management (e.g. People CMM). A number of differences among quality approaches exist and there can be various situations in which the usage of multiple approaches is required, e.g. to strengthen a particular process with multiple quality approaches or to reach certification of compliance to a number of standards. First of all, it has to be decided which approaches have the potential for the organization. In many cases, one approach does not contain enough information for process implementation. Consequently, the organization may need to use several approaches and the decision has to be made on how the chosen approaches can be used simultaneously. This area is called Multi-model Software Process Improvement (MSPI). The simultaneous usage of multiple quality approaches is called the multi-model problem. In this dissertation we propose a solution for the multi-model problem which we call the Process Based Unification (PBU) framework. The PBU framework consists of the PBU concept, a PBU process and the PBU result. We call PBU concept the mapping of quality approaches to a unified process.The PBU concept is operationalized by a PBU process. The PBU result includes the resulting unified process and the mapping of quality approaches to the unified process. Accordingly, we addressed the following research question: Does the PBU framework provide a solution of sufficient quality for current problems of simultaneous usage of multiple quality approaches? In order to recognize a solution of sufficient quality we identified criteria for multi-model solutions based on current problems and initiatives. This is called MSPI criteria. In order to determine if the mapping of quality approaches to a process is possible we analyzed elements of quality approaches, elements of processes and the mapping of quality approach elements to process elements. The findings of the analysis lead us to design a multi-model solution, the PBU framework. In order to show the feasibility of the results, we performed a case study reflecting how the PBU framework can be used in practice for developing a unified (peer review) process which conforms to three different quality approaches. Finally, we assessed the PBU framework against MSPI criteria. In May 1917, William and Elizebeth Friedman were asked by the U.S. Army to begin training officers in cryptanalysis and to decrypt intercepted German diplomatic and military communications. In June 1917, Herbert Yardley convinced the new head of the Army's Military Intelligence Division to create a code and cipher section for the Army with himself as its head. These two seminal events were the beginning of modern American cryptology, the growth of which culminated 35 years later with the creation of the National Security Agency. The digital twin can be deployed in almost every industry and is able to represent any object, being, process or organisation. The resulting benefits are versatile and can encompass a higher transparency and efficiency, cost reduction, or the enabling of completely new functions such as the virtual commissioning. Digital twins do even contribute to a sustainable industrial production as they enable a corresponding reduction of the primary energy emissions of up to eight percent. Due to this substantial added value, digital twins pertain to the top ten strategic technology trends and are expected to reach a market size of over 48 billion USD by 2026. The existence of digital twins is strongly dependent on its underlying data, for which reason the data storage is of fundamental importance for the operation of this technology. In the past, the digital twin concept mostly relied upon a traditional storage infrastructure in form of databases or clouds. However, digital twins and its data storage face major challenges, e.g., through a more and more connected world and therefore an increasing number of potential participants and data volume, or as a consequence of growing data security-related risks. Generalized Normalizing Flows Via Markov Chains
Normalizing flows, diffusion normalizing flows and variational autoencoders are powerful generative models. This Element provides a unified framework to handle these approaches via Markov chains. The authors consider stochastic normalizing flows as a pair of Markov chains fulfilling some properties, and show how many state-of-the-art models for data generation fit into this framework. Indeed numerical simulations show that including stochastic layers improves the expressivity of the network and allows for generating multimodal distributions from unimodal ones. The Markov chains point of view enables the coupling of both deterministic layers as invertible neural networks and stochastic layers as Metropolis-Hasting layers, Langevin layers, variational autoencoders and diffusion normalizing flows in a mathematically sound way. The authors' framework establishes a useful mathematical tool to combine the various approaches.
