Collins International Lower Secondary Computing
Collins International Lower Secondary Computing series is structured around six themes relating to computing and digital literacy and offers learners a comprehensive and engaging approach to learning, enhanced by real-world applications. Each chapter is organised to develop essential skills, leading learners towards the creation of a final project. The project-based activities nurture creative skills and give learners the opportunity to make decisions and develop projects that matter to them. Stage 9 projects focus on everything from using Python, to creating a video game pitch deck, giving children the tools to build key computing and ICT skills, linking the five strands of theory to the practice of computing, and showing learners how computers work. Each chapter enables students to develop their computing and digital literacy skills through a fun, practical and relatable project. Stage 9 helps learners to create a web page, use Python, create a video game pitch deck, design a network for a global music star and create a piece of repetitive artwork.Learners will build their understanding throughout the stage, using a rich variety of sources with an international focus to support their learning. With regular opportunities for discussion, group work, investigation and design, the Student's Book and Workbook encourage active learning throughout. This includes 'unplugged' learning to explore concepts and foster computational thinking skills. Each chapter concludes with an opportunity for learners to build and showcase their own work, consolidating their learning through self or peer assessment and reflection.Clear explanations, visually engaging activities and 'Key terms' features are designed to support young learners, especially those with English as a second or additional language. The course includes the latest hardware and software information, additionally exploring Artificial Intelligence and AI images and empowers learners to navigate the online world safely by equipping them with crucial digital safety skills.Written by Laura Sach, a female expert, who has a breadth of computing experience across industry, education and research, and her culturally responsive approach provides teachers with an accessible and inclusive learning experience for all ages and inspires greater participation and tech career pathways for all.
Visualization for Artificial Intelligence
This book explores how visualization provides an effective way of improving not only the interpretability but also the generalization capabilities of machine learning models. It shows how visualization can bridge the gap between complex models or algorithms and human understanding while also facilitating data curation and model refinement. Therefore, visualization for artificial intelligence (VIS4AI) has become an emerging area that combines interactive visualization with machine learning techniques to maximize their values. VIS4AI techniques focus on every phase of the machine learning life cycle, from data preprocessing to model development and deployment. These techniques are closely aligned with the well-established data and model pipelines in machine learning. In the data pipeline, they contribute to improving data quality and feature quality, including training data cleaning and feature engineering. In the model pipeline, they support (1) model development by focusing on model understanding, diagnosis, and steering; and (2) model deployment by enabling decision explanation, model performance monitoring, and model maintenance. This book provides a framework of VIS4AI and introduces the associated techniques in the two pipelines. It emphasizes the importance of interactive visualization in AI and presents various visualization techniques for different purposes. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities of VIS4AI and proposes several promising research topics for future work, such as improving training data using complementary modalities, online training diagnosis, fitting the dynamic nature of AI systems, and interactively pre-training and adapting foundation models. Overall, this book aims to serve as a resource for researchers and practitioners interested in both visualization and artificial intelligence.
Human-Centric AI with Common Sense
This book enables readers to understand the challenges and opportunities of developing human-centered AI with commonsense reasoning abilities. Despite apparent accuracy improvements brought by large neural models across task benchmarks, common sense is still lacking. The lack of common sense affects many tasks, including story understanding, decision-making, and question answering. Commonsense knowledge and reasoning have long been considered the "black matter" of AI, raising concerns about the trustworthiness and applicability of AI methods in both autonomous and hybrid applications. This book describes how to design a more robust, collaborative, explainable, and responsible AI through incorporating neuro-symbolic commonsense reasoning. In addition, the book provides examples of how these properties of AI can facilitate a wide range of social-good applications in digital democracy, traffic monitoring, education, and robotics. What makes commonsense reasoning such a unique and impactful challenge? What can we learn from cognitive research when designing and developing AI systems? How can we approach building responsible, robust, collaborative, and explainable AI with common sense? And finally, what is the impact of this work on human-AI teaming? This book provides an accessible introduction and exploration of these topics.

Strategic Software Quality Management
This book introduces strategic management tools and techniques appropriate for use in software quality management. There has been a gap between strategic management and software quality, and the solutions for solving the problems and improving the software quality usually come from the experience of IT experts: the managerial experience. This book helps people interested in software quality to go beyond the IT technical issues and integrate strategic management tools with their technical knowledge to become more prepared for the future, develop long-term plans for solutions and improvements, take more strategic decisions even when compared with the competitors, and finally, reach sustainable continuous improvements. This book, by bridging software quality management and strategic management, can be used by software quality practitioners for effective results. The software development process is usually studied with regards to its functional aspects and the attempts to improve the quality and performance are mainly concentrated on the technical side. The developers, testers, or engineers search for solutions mostly directed toward a local problem specific to a unit, department, or code. What is often missing is grasping the big image of the problem: the managerial aspect. Even if all the technical staff are doing their tasks as they were planned, there is a vital need for identifying the bottlenecks and the points in need of improvements, alterations, and exclusions, together with tracking the progress and coming up with future strategies. This makes the software quality management activities intertwined with the strategic management concepts where strategic management enhances the quality management with its tools and techniques, and, in return, the software quality management provides the strategic management with insights on the technical issues, resulting in symbiosis. The highly competitive nature of the IT world makes it inevitable to take strategic tools and techniques into account and infuse them into the technical practices of software quality management. This book encompasses the following chapters: analyzing the current situation, identifying the improvement areas, determining the strategies, tracking the progress, and achieving a sustainable improvement.

The Means of Prediction
An eye-opening examination of how power--not technology--will define life with AI. AI is inescapable, from its mundane uses online to its increasingly consequential decision-making in courtrooms, job interviews, and wars. The ubiquity of AI is so great that it might produce public resignation--a sense that the technology is our shared fate. As economist Maximilian Kasy shows in The Means of Prediction, artificial intelligence, far from being an unstoppable force, is irrevocably shaped by human decisions--choices made to date by the ownership class that steers its development and deployment. Kasy shows that the technology of AI is ultimately not that complex. It is insidious, however, in its capacity to steer results to its owners' wants and ends. Kasy clearly and accessibly explains the fundamental principles on which AI works, and, in doing so, reveals that the real conflict isn't between humans and machines, but between those who control the machines and the rest of us. The Means of Prediction offers a powerful vision of the future of AI: a future not shaped by technology, but by the technology's owners. Amid a deluge of debates about technical details, new possibilities, and social problems, Kasy cuts to the core issue: Who controls AI's objectives, and how is this control maintained? The answer lies in what he calls "the means of prediction," or the essential resources required for building AI systems: data, computing power, expertise, and energy. As Kasy shows, in a world already defined by inequality, one of humanity's most consequential technologies has been and will be steered by those already in power. Against those stakes, Kasy offers an elegant framework both for understanding AI's capabilities and for designing its public control. He makes a compelling case for democratic control over AI objectives as the answer to mounting concerns about AI's risks and harms. The Means of Prediction is a revelation, both an expert undressing of a technology that has masqueraded as more complicated and a compelling call for public oversight of this transformative technology.
