The Metaverse
This book explores whether the Metaverse - understood here as a persistent, immersive, and widely utilized, virtual world - will be the next chapter in the evolution of cyberspace, and what that means for people, business, and society. The Metaverse. Depending on your perspective, it's the future of the Internet, the next generation of video games, or "a deeply uncomfortable, worse version of Zoom." In many ways, the confusion, overpromising, and hype are reminiscent of how the Internet itself was envisioned in earlier epochs. A diverse range of firms are investing in Metaverse tech, causing a digital gold rush. There is plausibly a substantial first-mover advantage to be won, which Forbes has estimated to be north of a $1 trillion revenue opportunity. But there have also been questions raised about the utility of the Metaverse, with many firms, including Disney and Meta itself, pivoting to AI even as others like Apple release new products doubling down on spatial computing. In the trademark question-and-answer style of the What Everyone Needs to Know(R) series, this book provides an understanding of what the Metaverse is, how it is different from virtual and augmented reality, and the emerging Metaverse economy. It looks at media, politics, speech, crime and security, and identity and privacy in the Metaverse. It explores how governance and law operate -- or may operate -- in the Metaverse, the rights of bots, and our Meta future. The stakes are high, and confusion abounds, particularly in the public, making The Metaverse a perfect addition to the What Everyone Needs to Know(R) series.

If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The New Yorker's Best Books of 2025 The Guardian's Best Books of 2025 A 2025 Booklist Editors' Choice Pick The scramble to create superhuman AI has put us on the path to extinction--but it's not too late to change course, as two of the field's earliest researchers explain in this clarion call for humanity. "May prove to be the most important book of our time."--Tim Urban, Wait But Why In 2023, hundreds of AI luminaries signed an open letter warning that artificial intelligence poses a serious risk of human extinction. Since then, the AI race has only intensified. Companies and countries are rushing to build machines that will be smarter than any person. And the world is devastatingly unprepared for what would come next. For decades, two signatories of that letter--Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares--have studied how smarter-than-human intelligences will think, behave, and pursue their objectives. Their research says that sufficiently smart AIs will develop goals of their own that put them in conflict with us--and that if it comes to conflict, an artificial superintelligence would crush us. The contest wouldn't even be close. How could a machine superintelligence wipe out our entire species? Why would it want to? Would it want anything at all? In this urgent book, Yudkowsky and Soares walk through the theory and the evidence, present one possible extinction scenario, and explain what it would take for humanity to survive. The world is racing to build something truly new under the sun. And if anyone builds it, everyone dies. "The best no-nonsense, simple explanation of the AI risk problem I've ever read."--Yishan Wong, Former CEO of Reddit

Inevitable
Modern science has done an extremely good job of getting to the bottom of a number of tough problems in information theory and the study of cognition. It is therefore surprising to see that the concept of artificial intelligence has derailed into speculation about intelligent machines. This book presents a contrasting vision of the future of intelligence. Instead of assuming that artificial general intelligence is on the way, the time has come to reconsider the way we think about AI in light of the facts that emerge from a careful study of the intelligence found in living minds.AI is a mere computer program, but it is special because it can quickly navigate the digital records human beings have been making as we share our culture, our ideas, and our thoughts with one another online and via literature & speech. Minds are the origin of the material that large language models are made out of, but too many researchers have reached the wrong conclusions about the differences between biological intelligence and artificial intelligence. INEVITABLE: Distributed Cognition & Network Superintelligence is written to explore the ways in which people are already using network technologies to organize and share a staggering amount of information with each other.Enter the vision of a future in which people have learned to proactively organize around our shared bodies of knowledge, of collective human intelligence. Language brings us the ability to share our mental processes with other people around the world as we build our social networks and move forward into an ever-more-connected way of life. Providing individuals with ever-increasing access to information has been a developing goal of modern technology for some time now. As distributed systems technologies improve, it will become increasingly important to maintain the shared collective human intelligence.

Artificial Psychology
The success of predictive large language models (PLLMs) like GPT3 and ChatGPT has created both enthusiasts and skeptics of their widespread practical applications, but this book argues that the larger significance of such models is contained in what they suggest about human cognition. To explore this potential, the book develops a thought experiment called the Prediction Room, a reference to John Searle's influential Chinese Room argument, in which a human agent processes language by following a set of opaque written rules without possessing an inherent understanding of the language. The book proposes a new Room model--the Prediction Room with its resident Prediction Agent--generalizing the working of large language models. Working through a wide range of topics in cognitive science, the book challenges the conclusion of Searle's thought experiment, that discredited contemporary artificial intelligences (AI), through the suggestion that the Prediction Room offers a means of exploring how new ideas in AI can provide productive alternatives to traditional understandings of human cognition. In considering the implications of this, the book reviews an array of topics and issues in cognitive science to uncover new ideas and reinforce older ideas about the mental mechanisms involved in both sides. The discussion of these topics in the book serves two purposes. First, it aims to stimulate new thinking about familiar topics like language acquisition or the nature and acquisition of concepts. Second, by contrasting human psychology with the form of artificial psychology these models exhibit, it uncovers how new directions in the development of these systems can be better explored.
