Advances in Lithium-Ion Battery Safety and Fire
Lithium-ion batteries have become one of the most competitive forms of energy storage media for electric vehicles, energy storage power stations, novel energy storage systems, and so on. The safety issues associated with batteries, including thermal runaway, thermal runaway propagation, aging degradation, fire, and explosion, have caused widespread concern. These issues have not been satisfactorily unveiled and resolved. To this end, this Special Issue presents a collection of innovative research focused on battery safety and fire. It highlights key advances in the fundamental science and key technologies for thermal safety and management with regard to battery-related fires and explosions, including mechanisms, modeling, characteristics, monitoring technologies, and control strategies. Therefore, this Reprint was crafted to update the scientific community on recent advancements and future focus points in battery safety and battery fires, offering valuable insights for improving battery safety and performance.
Solidification and Casting of Metals and Alloys
Recent advances and developments in solidification have enabled the casting production of superalloys, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and copper alloys with unique microstructures. And, recent developments in processing technology have also improved the productivity and reliability of some metal castings. These developments have all stemmed from a steadily improving understanding of the science of solidification metallurgy, as well as an appreciation of the microstructural control using advanced solidification processing. In addition, numerous works have investigated both experimental and analytical/computer modeling aimed at disclosing the fundamental aspects of metallurgical processes, phase formation, and growth within liquid melts, and the software developed was used to clarify the solidification process.Accordingly, this Special Issue entitled "Solidification and Casting of Metals and Alloys" seeks to provide an overview of the latest developments in the various aspects of solidification metallurgy. Specifically, we aim to cover (a) metallurgical control of the composition and microstructure of metals or castings; (b) micro- and macrosegregation mechanisms, as well as the microstructural evolution of solidification microstructures; (c) multi-scale experiments and simulations for solidification using different calculated methods; (d) fundamental aspects such as nucleation, grain growth, and the development of the mushy zone; and (e) thermal and compositional effects on the development/avoidance of casting defects, etc.

Advances in Retinal Image Processing
Visual impairment is a primary global challenge in the present era. Lack of awareness, shortage of resources, and a shortage of trained personnel can lead to several retinal disorders, which, in turn, can lead to blindness or severe visual impairment. The human retina is examined through non-invasive procedures such as fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, and fluorescein angiography. From these retinal images, ophthalmologists visually analyze and identify retinal abnormalities associated with various retinal disorders. Automated retinal image analysis is of utmost importance for diagnosing and grading, as well as for monitoring the progression or regression of the disease after surgical and therapeutic intervention. State-of-the-art devices such as portable OCT and smartphone cameras have simplified the acquisition of retinal images to some extent. However, the ever-increasing blind population and the availability of massive computational resources have spurred the urgent need to develop automated retinal imaging applications. The gamut of cutting-edge technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence and deep learning, could be a gateway to resolving these challenges. Tribology in Vehicles
With the requirement on all forms of transport to become faster, quieter and generally more efficient the contribution that best practice tribology can make is becoming increasingly evident. Although great achievements have been made on the energy efficiency and performance of batteries and electric powertrains there is still much work to do on the design of novel brakes, bearings, transmissions, lubricants and lubrication systems in hybrid or pure electric road vehicles. In addition, the friction and wear problems associated with both road and rail vehicles-for example between the tyre and the pavement or wheel and rail-continue to demand attention from tribologists and vehicle manufactures. Vehicle pollution is closely related to tribology, not only engine emissions but vehicle noise at both low and high frequencies, and braking and tyre particle generation: all of these problems will require innovative solutions involving elements of tribology. While pure electric vehicles no doubt will become mainstream in the future, it is still the case that by 2040 autos equipped with internal combustion engines may well account for a significant proportion of the global annual sales of passenger vehicles so that further work on the efficiencies of IC engines is still relevant.

In many cases, the polymerization process can be efficiently reversed via depolymerization recycling to regain monomers at the original quality level. As such, depolymerization is a key circularity enabler for some classes of polymers, especially when crosslinked or used in composites.
