The Poverty of Green Philosophy
Humanity has a problem: human-caused global warming. In The Poverty of Green Philosophy, two progressive intellectuals with a profound knowledge of science, technology, and capitalism give us a fresh and iconoclastic take on the energy dilemma confronting our species. Many leading climate scientists like James Hansen, aware of the limitations of solar and wind, have concluded that nuclear power is the best--possibly the only--hope for solving the climate change problem. Environmentalists have traditionally opposed nuclear energy, but are now swinging around to acceptance, as the real science becomes better known.Sacks and Meyerson rigorously demonstrate that the only practical solution to the environmental energy problem is the greatly expanded use of nuclear power. Their argument combines a devastating exposure of the wishful thinking and scientific ignorance that lies at the heart of any reliance on "renewables," a sober examination of the real risks and true merits of nuclear energy, and an exposure of the capitalist system as an obstacle to human betterment.

Prediction of Warning Level in Aircraft Accidents
This work focuses on the evaluation of risk and safety in the civil aviation industry. The aim of the work is to study the performance of different classification algorithms on accident reports of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) accident/incident data system database. The work analyses the number of accident data records for all categories of aviation between the years of 1950 to 2012. The classification algorithms such as DT, KNN, SVM, NN and NB are used to predict the warning level of the component as the class attribute. The rules are proven in terms of their accuracy, and these results are seen to be very meaningful. This study also proves that the NB classifiers will perform better than other classifiers.

BIM and Construction Health and Safety
This book aims to conceptualise the implementation of building information modelling (BIM) in the workplace health and safety (WHS) management of construction projects to reduce occupational accidents. The safety performance of the construction industry has always been a concern across the globe, and this devastating reputation has drawn the concern of many nations. The potential functions of BIM can drastically alter the WHS practices of the construction industry. BIM facilitates WHS information exchange and management and supports better collaboration and project planning through virtual visualisation of the construction WHS management process. Despite an increasing interest in BIM, a successful mechanism for employing BIM in construction WHS management is absent. Therefore, this book aims to fill this dearth by presenting a model for the integration of such innovative interventions with the current industry practices in a practical manner through the proper identification of effective areas and evaluation of their impacts on the key criteria of construction projects and organisations. This approach will foster the implementation of BIM in the current state of WHS management in the industry and can potentially reduce occupational accidents on construction sites. This book is essential reading for researchers and professionals interested in how BIM technology can improve health and safety on construction projects. It is intended for engineers, project managers, construction managers, safety officers and safety managers.

Structures under Shock and Impact XVII
The contents of this volume reflect the increasing need to protect civilian infrastructure and industrial facilities against unintentional loads arising from accidental impact and explosion events as well as terrorist attacks. While advances have been made in recent years, many challenges remain, such as to develop more effective and efficient blast and impact mitigation approaches than those currently available. The primary focus remains the survivability of physical facilities and the protection of people, as well as reducing economic losses and impact on the environment, with emphasis on innovative protective technologies to support the needs of an economically growing, modern society. The application of such technologies ranges from the safe transportation of people and dangerous materials to defences against natural hazards.Large scale testing is economically prohibitive and results from small scale laboratory testing are prone to scaling uncertainties. Improving the knowledge on how structures behave under a variety of load actions is therefore essential; some of these actions interact making their definition even more complex and difficult. Consequently, more use of advanced numerical simulations for load and structural response calculations is common practice in industry and research. Such calculations can directly be used in design and risk assessments, but also contribute to the development of simplified design tools and design codes. Numerical or exact modelling techniques need to be complemented with experimental validation, which is vital for the modelling approach to be acceptable. The included papers, presented at the 17th International Conference on Structures under Shock and Impact, highlight new research ideas and results to promote a better understanding of a range of critical issues among those mentioned above.
