Community-Based Approaches for Sustainable Conservation of Wewalthalawa Natural Forest

Eliva Press 出版
2025/09/23 出版

The Wewalthalawa natural forest serves as the primary catchment area for the Vee Oya River and a critical habitat for numerous endangered species. Despite its ecological and economic importance, this unique ecosystem faces severe degradation due to human activities such as deforestation, illegal cultivation, and resource extraction. This study aimed to identify the key anthropogenic factors affecting the stability of the Wewalthalawa natural forest and propose sustainable conservation strategies. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including interviews, group discussions, and field observations. Results revealed that 70% of the local community directly depends on the forest for resources like fuel wood, forage, and timber, while 80% engage in indirect consumption, significantly impacting the forest's stability. Economic activities, including the extraction of spices like cardamom and walla patta (Gyrinops walla), contribute to forest degradation, with 85% of the harvested materials used non-economically. Field observations highlighted environmental impacts, including landslides triggered by deforestation and habitat destruction. The study underscores the urgent need for integrated conservation strategies. Recommendations include providing alternative livelihood opportunities, increasing wages for estate workers, allocating lands for agriculture, and implementing stringent regulatory frameworks. Strengthening research on the region's unique biodiversity can further enhance conservation efforts and uncover new species of global significance. This study demonstrates the Wewalthalawa forest's critical role in biodiversity preservation and sustainable resource management. It provides actionable insights for policymakers and conservationists to balance ecological preservation with community development. Immediate action is essential to protect this invaluable natural resource for future generations and maintain its ecological and socio-economic benefits.

Mycorrhization of Peach Seedlings

Eliva Press 出版
2025/09/22 出版

This book aims to demonstrate that the native AMF species of a given region, which are already adapted to its soil and climate conditions, tend to confer a greater potential for response when inoculated into plants to be cultivated in that region. It also seeks to demonstrate how the anatomical and morphological relationships developed between plants during the signaling/establishment of symbiosis promote beneficial effects on plants and the environment, allowing for a reduction in production costs and dependence on inputs from outside the property. The main objective is to assist in the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the formation of the mutualistic complex between roots and AMF. In this context, the work seeks to review the issue of mycorrhization of peach rootstocks as a propagation method that can be used as an alternative to traditional seedling production methods, which have proven to be outdated and inadequate to solve the current problems of the crop, such as the replanting of old cultivation areas.

Recent Advances in Biological Control of Root Diseases of Rubber Trees in China

Chunping,He  著
Eliva Press 出版
2025/09/22 出版

As a tropical crop, the growth cycle and yield of natural rubber are easily affected by factors such as climate change and environment. The rubber planting area in China is located on the northern edge of the tropics. In addition to being frequently affected by natural disasters such as cold waves, droughts, and typhoons, the warm and humid climate is also very conducive to the reproduction and spread of harmful organisms. The rubber planting areas in China suffer losses of over 60000 tons of dry rubber annually due to pest and disease hazards. Therefore, strengthening the prevention and control of diseases and pests in rubber trees, effectively reducing the degree of harm, and increasing natural rubber production are important links and measures to promote the healthy development of the natural rubber industry. The authors of this book, He Chunping, a researcher at the Environment and Plant Protection Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, and Liang Yanqiong, an associate researcher, have long been engaged in monitoring, early warning, and control technology research of rubber tree root rot disease. Through years of investigation and in-depth research on root rot disease in rubber planting areas in China, as well as the collection of their own research achievements in biological control technology for the root disease of rubber tree over the past decade, have compiled this book. This book is divided into five parts, the first part is screening and cultivation of biocontrol bacteria, the second part is antagonistic bacteria inhibit rubber tree diseases, the third part is isolation and identification of antifungal active substances, the fourth part is synergistic between biocontrol bacteria and chemical fungicides, and the fifth part is antifungal mechanism of biocontrol bacteria. This book provides a detailed introduction for the first time on the screening and cultivation of biocontrol bacteria for rubber tree root disease, disease inhibition effects, isolation of active substances, antifungal mechanisms, and synergistic control of microorganisms and chemical agents. It is scientific, practical, instructive, and informative.

Possible solutions to low yield production of groundnut (Arachis hypogea) in Africa

Eliva Press 出版
2025/09/22 出版

One of the most significant oilseed crops cultivated in semi-arid and subtropical regions of the world is groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). The crop's low yield prevents it from meeting market demands. In the tropics, groundnuts are typically cultivated as a solitary crop or interplanted with cereal crops. Africa, comprising Nigeria, Niger, and Sudan, produces 929 kg ha-1, which is extremely low when compared to the Americas (3632 kg ha-1). Asian nations, particularly China and India, have the capacity to produce 2217 kg ha-1. Proper agronomic practices, including weed control techniques, plant spacing, fertilizer application, planting date, days to irrigation interval, etc., were employed for research findings in an attempt to increase the groundnut production yield in the study areas. The study revealed that improved varieties of SAMNUT 24 and SAMNUT 26 outperformed SAMNUT 25 in terms of growth and yield.

Radical Farm

FriesenPress 出版
2025/09/08 出版

As a species, we have perhaps never been so confused about what to eat. The ethical, environmental, and health-related impacts of our diets are hot topics of discussion, with plant-based lifestyles often touted as the best way forward. But what if the opposite is true? What if animal agriculture is not only beneficial but necessary to ensure the health of our soil, ourselves, and our food system?Part memoir, part homesteading guide, Radical Farm argues this is the case. Drawing on a wealth of research and hands-on experience, author and farmer/rancher Abey Rae Scaglione recounts how her and her family make their living and their life raising animals and growing crops on a heritage farm on Salt Spring Island. Along the way, she argues compellingly for the need for a return to local, regenerative farming practices, setting the record straight on common arguments against meat-eating and highlighting the need for animal agriculture because of animals' vital relationship with the soil (and the plant foods grown from it). The best way to support animal welfare, she argues, is not by opting out of animal agriculture altogether, but by supporting farms demonstrating good management.Radical Farm is also a guide to the basics of sustainably raising animals and growing plants. With information on cattle, sheep, chickens, turkeys and gardening, this book also includes instructions on how to use and preserve food. With information on canning, fermenting and cheesemaking, as well as plenty of real food recipes, this book is for anyone wanting to take back control of the food they eat. Informative and thoughtful, it is sure to make a welcome addition to the bookshelves of anyone interested in self-sufficiency, sustainability, and our modern food system.

The Bee-Kind Garden

David,Squire  著
Green Books 出版
2025/08/28 出版

'A charming little book for anyone who wants a gentle introduction to the world of honeybees' Ken Thompson, author of No Nettles Required The lives of bees are interwoven with our own, but how much do you know about them? Bees are a delight to see in the garden on warm summer days, buzzing as they flit from flower to flower. They are also vital for the future of the planet and without their dedicated pollinating skills, many crops would eventually fail. Then there is honey - a near-miraculous elixir that in earlier generations was an integral part of life as a sweetener and food preserver. The Bee-Kind Garden reveals the many facets of the lives of bees, including their hives, flight patterns and defence. It is filled with helpful information on important topics such as which flowers are best for attracting bees to your garden, beekeeping equipment and guidance for extracting honey as well as the art of talking to bees. It also celebrates the charming proverbs, limericks and verse bees have inspired. This beautifully illustrated book is a homage to bees and to ensuring that they continue to live in harmony with humans in bee-friendly gardens.
