Upland
A journey through Britain's uplands, weaving nature, history, and human connection to mountain landscapes.Fascinating and lyrical . . . A beautifully written celebration of a lifelong passion' - Stephen Venables The relationship of people with hills and mountains has been complex, rich and varied - from awe and wonder to fear and loathing, from spiritual longing to peaceful acceptance. As he explores our high places, Ian Crofton conjures up those who have been there before: Neolithic axe-makers, mass trespassers, shepherds, quarrymen, botanists, poets and pioneering cragsmen and women among them. At the same time, he is ever attuned to the present moment - a flash of bright moss in a bog, the swoop of an eagle above a skyline, a winter sun sinking into a sea of cloud. Following an arc from the gentle Downs of southern England to the wild peaks of Scotland's far north, Upland combines personal experiences with a keen curiosity about the history and nature of mountain landscapes, and the people who once worked and wandered among them. The result is a meditation on the enduring yet ever-changing hills, on the transience of human experience, and on the shifts and twists of time itself. "Westminster Abbey and Christmas Sketches" offers a captivating glimpse into two iconic facets of 19th-century British life through the observant eyes of Washington Irving. The first part of the book delves into the rich history and architectural grandeur of Westminster Abbey, guiding the reader through its hallowed halls and recounting the stories of kings, poets, and historical figures memorialized within its walls. Irving's evocative prose brings the abbey to life, revealing its profound significance as a national monument and a repository of England's collective memory. The second part captures the warm spirit of Christmas traditions in England, painting vivid pictures of festive celebrations, family gatherings, and time-honored customs. Irving's charming sketches evoke the convivial atmosphere of the holiday season and showcase the enduring appeal of English traditions. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. New York
Exactly half a century old, this timeless illustrated classic artfully captures the "Mad Men" era of New York City for readers of all ages. The unique essence of New York City is poetically celebrated in Vladimir Fuka's brilliant, colorful illustrations and collages and Zdenek Mahler's playful accompanying narrative. The book takes readers on a charming journey of discovery through the magnificent metropolis's architectural landmarks, cultural hot spots, and neighborhoods, from uptown to downtown, from Wall Street to Coney Island, and the Guggenheim Museum to Yankee Stadium. Interesting historical fun facts about the city and its inhabitants are combined with descriptions of the reality of everyday New York. New York was created in 1964 and first printed in the former Czechoslovakia in 1968, but the entire print run was pulped by the secret police after Fuka escaped to the United States. The book was finally brought to life when Mahler's grandson discovered a surviving copy in his attic. Fifty years later, it remains as fresh as ever and includes updated facts for today. This beautiful, vintage treasure will delight New Yorkers and tourists of all ages.

The Sound The Road Makes
Not only a wayward journey of living life and beating the odds, this book is an inspiring, romantic, and sometimes clever venture through the grittiness of being human. It's about surviving both the wilderness of the great outdoors, and of the soul. Just let the troubled kid grow out of it, the doctors insisted. Their misdiagnosis of a nerve condition trapped Steven inside his introverted world. On the outside, he became strong and fast, but inside, he only grew more inwardly. Confined within the walls of his vivid dreamworld, like a lit fuse, his adolescent years were on fire, leaving a trail of rebellion and breaking the rules from living harder than the loneliness and pain warring inside. His life calmed, but never tamed, once he discovered the hunger of the blank page in his late teens. While writing ignited his imagination to life, it wasn't until in his mid-twenties when a white puppy brought steady companionship into Steven's life. As they began their 14 year journey of roaming the open road, Ghost grew into a beautiful dog, and quite the ham. Despite Steven's awkwardly social demeanor, he crossed paths with wanderers, loners, and those searching for a place in this world...misfits like himself-adding adventure and romance to his own search of finding his place in this world. Along the way Steven stumbled upon God. The rules of religion couldn't hold him either, finding himself instead wrestling with the creator of this universe more so than walking with Him. He could never part with that daredevil spirit, causing the second half of this book to be more thrilling than the first. To write a book felt daunting, because Steven had never written for anyone to read. Ten years soared by, and as the writing of it transformed into the greatest adventure of his life, infused between the lines is a literary magic beyond him which occurs when a book and its writer merge into one. Not only are some of the challenges, and lessons learned the hard way, of creating this book included in his memoir, breathed into his story is what writing this book has burned into Steven's own heart.
