The History of Shanghai American School

Ingram 出版
2024/08/14 出版

My journey at Shanghai American School (SAS) began in a somewhat serendipitous manner during my fourth grade. Upon stepping foot into its halls, I felt as though I had entered a paradise where every student could genuinely relish their educational experience and pursue their passions with unfettered freedom. Unfortunately, my time at SAS was abruptly cut short when my family relocated to Scarsdale, New York, the following year. During my time in the States, I heard through long-distance phone calls and saw through Snapchat stories that my SAS friends were thoroughly enjoying their time in an academic utopia. Fueled by my longing to rejoin the SAS community, I initiated discussions with my parents about the possibility of going back. Remarkably, my parents agreed, granting me the opportunity to pursue my dream. Thus, I became a proud member of the SAS community. The genesis of "The History of Shanghai American School" took root during the summer of my freshman year in 2022. At that time, my fascination with WWII history, particularly the intricacies of its battles and their repercussions, was at its peak. While delving into the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor, a singular question emerged: what was transpiring at SAS, an American-operated institution in Shanghai, during this tumultuous period of history? This single query triggered a cascade of further inquiries: how did SAS weather the storm of WWII; how did it survive during the subsequent conflict between China and the U.S. from 1950 to 1953; how has it managed to grow to its premier state today? These musings, coupled with theimpending 110 years anniversary of SAS in 2022, propelled me to embark on the journey of chronicling its rich history. However, the path to crafting an accurate historical account proved to be longer and more arduous than expected: I faced enormous difficulty in accessing reliable sources. Limited access to primary sources necessitated reliance on secondary accounts, while the inclusion of internet-sourced images required careful consideration of copyright disclaimers, which I have included a multitude of in an appendix at the end of this work.Furthermore, as academic and other extracurricular deadlines loomed, the task of documenting SAS's contemporary era became increasingly sidetracked, prompting critical reflections on the value of this effort. Nearly two years elapsed before I could bring this project to fruition. Despite my best efforts, there remain many unanswered questions and unexplored avenues within SAS's history, which I hope future generations at SAS will endeavor to explore.

With Carl Schuster, in search of folk-art motifs in China

Lulu.com 出版
2024/06/24 出版

Frank Liebenthal (1918 Berlin - 1991 Buenos Aires) was the eldest son of Prof. Walter Liebenthal (1886-1982), a German sinologist, indologist and philosopher who, in 1934, had to leave Germany for exile in Beijing, China because of his Jewish ancestry. Frank attended elementary school in Berlin-Tempelhof and high school at the Karl-Marx-Schule in Berlin-Neuk繹lln. In August 1935, in face of his inability to pursue university studies in Germany due to Nazi-imposed restrictions, and seeing better opportunities in China, he and his aunt Irmgard Oenike travelled by the Trans-Siberian Railway to Beijing. During his last year in Germany, Frank had prepared for the entrance exams to Yenching University in Beijing. Having successfully passed them, he began his studies there in August 1935. In the summer of 1936, the American art historian Dr. Carl Schuster (1904-1969) invited Frank to join him on a study trip to Szechuan (Sichuan) Province. Dr. Schuster was one of the leading scholars in the fields of folklore and symbolism. This trip was the third trip that he undertook to collect old Chinese embroideries. At the time, China was in the midst of a civil war between the Nationalists (KMT) under Chiang Kaishek and the Communists under Mao Tsetung. There were also independent warlords in control of different regions. In addition, the Japanese invasion of China, launched in 1933 in northeastern China, had been gradually expanding into other areas. These aspects of reality were shaping the background throughout this study trip. Frank's travel diary recounts the very interesting and unique experiences he encountered during this 7-week journey into the Chinese hinterlands, between July 11 and August 29, 1936. Following the trip, he typed up his travel notes, carefully pasted in his own photos, and skillfully bounded the 96 pages into a neat little volume. A real treasure! The original photos are small, so we enlarged them and included them in the Appendix for a better appreciation, but you will notice that the quality of the photos is not always optimal.

Other Rivers

Random House 出版
2024/05/31 出版

An intimate and revelatory account of two generations of students in China's heartland, by an author who has observed the country's tumultuous changes over the past quarter century More than two decades after teaching English during the early part of China's economic boom, an experience chronicled in his book River Town, Peter Hessler returned to Sichuan Province to instruct students from the next generation. At the same time, Hessler and his wife enrolled their twin daughters in a local state-run elementary school, where they were the only Westerners. Over the years, Hessler had kept in close contact with many of the people he had taught in the 1990s. By reconnecting with these individuals--members of China's "Reform generation," now in their forties--while teaching current undergrads, Hessler gained a unique perspective on China's incredible transformation. In 1996, when Hessler arrived in China, almost all of the people in his classroom were first-generation college students. They typically came from large rural families, and their parents, subsistence farmers, could offer little guidance as their children entered a brand-new world. By 2019, when Hessler arrived at Sichuan University, he found a very different China, as well as a new kind of student--an only child whose schooling was the object of intense focus from a much more ambitious cohort of parents. At Sichuan University, many young people had a sense of irony about the regime but mostly navigated its restrictions with equanimity, embracing the opportunities of China's rise. But the pressures of extreme competition at scale can be grueling, even for much younger children--including Hessler's own daughters, who gave him an intimate view into the experience at their local school. In Peter Hessler's hands, China's education system is the perfect vehicle for examining the country's past, present, and future, and what we can learn from it, for good and ill. At a time when anti-Chinese rhetoric in America has grown blunt and ugly, Other Rivers is a tremendous, essential gift, a work of enormous empathy that rejects cheap stereotypes and shows us China from the inside out and the bottom up. As both a window onto China and a mirror onto America, Other Rivers is a classic from a master of the form.

The Tricky Bit

2024/01/31 出版

'Dad, Mum, I have something to say, best sit down.'So it unfolded that our son Pedr was planning to cycle around the world, on his own and unsupported, for the next couple of years.Seizing the opportunity for adventure, and supporting our son, I joined him for 'the tricky bit' - cycling through Kyrgyzstan, crossing China's most restrictive area of Xinjiang province, across the Karakoram and Himalayan mountain ranges, through Pakistan, and over the Wagah border to India.Every day and each country brought huge challenges and interesting interactions. There was high-stakes hide-and-seek with the Chinese police; experiencing the challenges of the Uyghur people; meeting the different cultures and reactions of the variety of people in Pakistan; the magically appearing police intervention on the really unsafe parts; and challenges crossing to India.

The Down to the Countryside Campaign and Return to the City Movement

Joshua,Zhang  著
2023/11/14 出版

Using a social movement perspective, this monograph demonstrates the differences between the Return to the City Movement by the Chinese educated youths - the only successful social movement by the Chinese people since the establishment of the communist regime - and the Down to the Countryside Campaign by the Chinese Communist Party. Grounded in data collected via an unprecedented survey research effort involving respondents who lived through these historic events, the monograph explores the emotional impact upon the educated youths of being forced to the countryside, the directions and forms of their resettlement, work, income, mentality, marriage/love, and relationship with local peasants while in the countryside, timelines and methods involved in returning to the city, their final occupations, children's fulfillment, current perceptions of urban life, evaluation of the campaign and their experiences in the countryside. The authors also summarize the lessons learned from the Return to the City Movement, providing references for Chinese social movements in the future.
