Fleeting Visits to (some) Scottish Islands and other Places of Interest
Following my Flying Visits to Scotland's Airports and Islands and Grand Tour of (much of) Scotland's Northern Coasts &Central Highlands, the possibly temporary easing of Covid-19 restrictions, after what seemed like an unending lockdown, encouraged me to start again my endeavours to visit those islands and other places of interest in Scotland that I had not previously visited or had given less attention than they deserve. This is not a guidebook! Places of interest visited are selective, not comprehensive. Do not expect recommendations of where to go, how to get there, where to stay and eat, and what to do when you get there. That is the province of D&K, Lonely Planet, Rough Guides etc. As well as an account of my tours, flights and visits, it contains snippets of history, geography, wildlife and, hopefully, amusing or poignant human stories. It also contains snippets of my family history, which drove one of the trips. It is essentially an account of the ramblings, in body and mind, of one individual - me.

High Tea and the Low Down
When American Claire Craig Evans married a charming British man, there was a cost for the snappy banter and countless offers of tea: she had to uproot life as she knew it and relocate to the UK.Who wouldn't want to move to an enchanted island where mysterious women with dewy complexions made jam in thatched cottages with millennia-old lichen attached?Sure, experienced American expats offered nuggets of wisdom ("Bring over a lifetime supply of taco seasoning!") but they weren't even mild comfort as Claire tried to avoid death, jail, and wayward sheep while learning to navigate zebra crossings and drive on the "wrong" side of the road. The allure of a jet-setter lifestyle vanished as fast as Air India sent her Samsonite to Delhi instead of London Heathrow. Would more tea help her figure out how long she'd been wearing the single pair of underwear in her possession? (That was the jetlag talking. They do have underwear in the UK, too.)Appealing to fans of Bill Bryson and Bridget Jones alike, High Tea and the Low Down is a keenly-observed memoir full of laugh-out-loud moments as Claire experiences the reality of English living. If she couldn't even pass a pub quiz, how would she ever pass the infamous Life in the UK test, the high-stakes hurdle required to stay on British soil (and with her husband) indefinitely?
Grand Tour of (much of) Scotland's Northern Coasts & Central Highlands
The arrival of Covid-19 at the turn of 2019-20 put paid to any travel until July 2020. My planned cruise out to St Kilda and some of the Hebridean islands with Noble Caledonia was cancelled as the lockdown began and although, for a while, it looked as if my replacement cruise with Majestic Line in late July might just go ahead, it too was cancelled. By that time, I had made some hotel bookings and a provisional arrangement to fly from Plockton to Skye and so I decided to travel right up the west coast, visiting places I had meant to visit but never before managed. It turned into a tour around (most of) the northern coasts of Scotland and a run back down through the Central highlands.
A Short Description of a Long Journey
John Taylor, the Water Poet, was an early tourist to Wales. As with some of his other works, the journey was paid by subscription: a proposal would have been submitted and, when enough subscribers had contributed advance payments to defray his travel expenses, the author would have undertaken the journey. In the present volume, the author travels to Chester, and thence round the coast of Wales, with a small detour over the Menai Strait to visit Beaumaris. His account is very brief, and one does wish he had described what he saw in greater detail, but what he wrote was exceedingly interesting, and, as he passes through Flint, Holywell, Rhuddlan, Bangor, Harlech, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen, and so on, he gives us a glimpse of what this then inaccessible country was like in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. The terrain was, as might be expected, rugged and difficult, and at times it forced him to not only to alight from his horse, but crawl on all fours. A royalist, his hosts were typically gentlemen, but he was not always treated politely, on one occasion ending up on a muddy field, facing the prospect of a wet and uncomfortable night under the clouds. First published in 1653 to subscribers only, this short relation remained the rarest of his works, and even after republication 1859, this latter edition was limited to just 26 copies. And while modern reprints of the latter exist, the present is the first proper new edition in over 160 years.

North Wales - Intended as a Guide to Future Tourists
In July 1798, a Cambridge student set out on a botanical tour and wrote the first guidebook to North Wales. Wearing spectacles and carrying a rucksack, Yorkshire-born William Bingley made notes, sketched and looked for rare plants. He befriended a Welshman with whom he made the first recorded rock climb in Britain on the north flank of Snowdon. Three years later they climbed the iconic mountain Tryfan. Bingley also helped establish the legend of the faithful hound Gelert. In retracing Bingley's steps through the historic counties of Flint, Denbigh, Caernarvon, Anglesey, Merioneth and Montgomery (as well as the town of Oswestry), the reader will discover a landscape and people of over two hundred years ago. They will clamber with Bingley up waterfalls, ride in a waggon into a candle-lit copper mine, sail on a cutter to Ynys Enlli, suffer the fleas at an inn in Beddgelert, ponder the necessity of taking a pint of rum up Snowdon, or blissfully rest in the shade of Montgomery Castle during harvest. Perhaps also, like Bingley, they will be fired by the Last Bard's curse on Edward I, while gazing across the water at sunset towards the isle of the Druids. This first edition since 1839 includes a newly researched biography, and background on the Picturesque, the Sublime, slate quarries and pickled puffins.

Marco Wong 2023 UK School Tours
Unlike last trip (and book) this time I planned to write about this journey once checked in at the Hong Kong International Airport. I planned to write on the train rides but unfortunately for some reason they were not stable enough for me to even write the postcards. Turns out taking First Class rides helps very little regarding the situation. Anyway, time to recap the school tours and the lovely moments. 26/1/2023 9:04 a.m. London Time Heathrow Airport

A Pedestrian Tour through North Wales in a Series of Letters
In the Summer of 1794, Samuel Taylor Coleridge set out for North Wales with his Cambridge friend, Joseph Hucks. A Pedestrian Tour through North Wales, published the following year, is the latter's account of their travels. It was a turbulent time that had brought into question many old verities: the American colonies had recently broken off from the British Empire, and France was mid-way through its devastating revolution, heads still rolling off the guillotine while that most civilised of nations lived through the Reign of Terror. The two friends, 22 years of age, set out with rucksacks and old clothing, mingling with the peasants, staying at inns, and travelling everywhere on foot, at a time when the vogue of pedestrian tours was just beginning, and when voluntarily walking from place to place was not considered respectable. Their 600-mile journey, quite an achievement in that era, went as far south as Aberystwyth and passed through Devil's Bridge. Follow them on their journey and see them sneer at modern repairs on Beaurmaris Castle, flinch at promiscuous nudity in the beaches of Abergele, cause alarm among children near Conwy, be taken for Frenchmen by the same, break bedroom windows in Tregarron in order to get air, and a great deal more. Hucks the backpacker and poet supplies us with a unique, entertaining, and elegantly written glimpse into 18th-century North Wales.

Natural Wonders of the British Isles
If this title seems a little pretentious, I can only say, in my defence, that it was the title of the second Noble Caledonia cruise to be embarked upon after the partial easing of the Covid-19 lockdown in 2021. Places visited included such diverse locations as the remote archipelago of St Kilda, the Hebrides, Loch Torridon, Rathlin Island, the Giant's Causeway, Anglesey, St David's, Lundy, the Isles of Scilly, and Fowey, all the time accompanied by a team of enthusiastic experts to point out items of interest.
