Croatia: Dalmatian Coast
New from Bradt is Croatia: Dalmatian Coast, a travel guidebook that focuses exclusively and in detail on this popular part of Croatia. Co-authored by travel writer Piers Letcher, who wrote six editions of Bradt's guide Croatia, and longstanding Dalmatian resident Jane Foster, Croatia: Dalmatian Coast offers intimate local insights into where best to stay and eat, and what to see and do in this southeast European enclave. With rugged limestone mountains, crystalline turquoise waters and pine-scented islands, Dalmatia has for centuries delighted explorers. Most of today's visitors to Croatia still head here - and with multiple flights from New York in summer, it has never been more accessible from the US. With its balmy Mediterranean climate, this is a land of silvery-green olive groves, hillside vineyards, pebble coves, waterside villages, stone cottages, wooden fishing boats and pink-flowering oleander. Meanwhile, the Dalmatian mainland is home to the well-preserved port cities of Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik (with its UNESCO-listed, pedestrians-only old town), where sturdy fortifications protect exquisite Romanesque and Baroque churches. With this Bradt guide sharing a local's first-hand experience, you'll eat well: think fresh fish, local seasonal fruit and vegetables, and home-produced olive oil, whether consumed in excellent, small, family-run agrotourism eateries, or newly Michelin-starred restaurants. You'll drink great wines too, informed by the knowledge of Dalmatia's wines and wine-tasting. For many visitors, Dalmatia's greatest allure involves exploring its dramatic landscapes and unspoilt nature. Castaway-style islands such as Hvar, with its rustic-chic seafood eateries and candle-lit cocktail bars, are much loved by yachters who sail around the uninhabited islets of Kornati National Park. Then there's windsurfing off Bol on Brač, scuba diving off Vis, and sea-kayaking or paddling around the Korčula archipelago too. On the mainland, rugged mountains and gaping gorges offer yet more challenges for adventure-sports enthusiasts - try hiking the soaring limestone heights of Mt Biokovo, free-climbing in Paklenica National Park or rafting down the Cetina Gorge, in the hinterland behind Omis. Little wonder that land- and water-based adventure sports are treated to a full chapter in Bradt's Croatia: Dalmatian Coast - the perfect companion to your visit.

Spyless in Tirana
Once cut off from the rest of Europe by dictator Enver Hoxha, Albania has long been a source of fascination for Alex Klaushofer. Thirty years after the fall of communism, she spends a spring in Tirana, gaining a privileged insight into the country as it strives to join the modern West.Volunteering at Tirana's first hostel and interviewing a wide range of people, the author talks to a political prisoner about his experiences under the regime and meets the student activists trying to change a system which is still corrupt. She hears about the discrimination suffered by the disabled and sees how a new culture of caring for animals is slowly developing. She learns how, in a state where religion was banned, faith is making a comeback, why trafficking takes place and discovers how profoundly the architecture reflects the changing fortunes of the city.A compelling narrative and piece of informed reportage, Spyless in Tirana provides a rare insight into a colourful, chaotic country that is utterly unlike any other. Please note that as a 'travella' of 35,000 words, the book is about the third of the length of a conventional travelogue.

Poland - Culture Smart!
Don't just see the sights―get to know the people.Culture Smart! guides provide travelers with vital information about the values and attitudes of the people they will meet, and practical advice on how to make the most of their time abroad. Travelers to Poland in particular, a country in transition from its Communist past, need to be open-minded and well-informed. Today's Poland is very much a mix of the old and the new, and the two are not always in harmony. Background knowledge of the land, people, and history is crucial to understanding who the Poles are today: the Polish sense of identity has been forged by history, and the reader is introduced to the main events of Poland's turbulent past. A chapter on values and attitudes provides essential insights into this relationship-based society, and will help visitors understand why things are done the way they are. Further chapters describe important festivals and rites of passage, as well as how Poles go about their daily social and work lives. Valuable advice is also offered on how to get along with them. The Polish people are warm and generous and place great value on personal relationships. Show an interest in their history and an awareness of their culture, and your welcome will be warmer still. Have a more meaningful and successful time abroad through a better understanding of the local culture. Chapters on values, attitudes, customs, and daily life will help you make the most of your visit, while tips on etiquette and communication will help you navigate unfamiliar situations and avoid faux pas.

Montenegro or Bust
Richard Dotson and two chums set out to explore the Adriatic coast of Croatia and Montenegro. It's to be the adventure of a lifetime, originally on bicycles, but plans change. Here's the recipe: Take three former college lecturers, place in a blue Nissan Micra for three hours, allowing them to simmer in their own juices, before putting the contents into a pressurised, air-conditioned vessel for a further two and a half hours at an altitude of approximately 35,000 feet. Empty onto the Adriatic near Dubrovnik and bake at 35 degrees, basting with factor 30 Sun screen for a week. Liberally sprinkle with a bevy of Balkan beauties, restaurants and a couple of breweries, before allowing to ferment and cool in the shade of numerous public houses, but avoiding Irish Bars like the plague.Add information gleaned or omitted from "The Lonely Planet Guide" and local Autobuska Stanica, then simply serve, stand back and watch the fun. A travel adventure with a difference, but if it doesn't tempt the reader to pack a rucksack and map, grab a flight and hurtle over there, then there's something seriously wrong with them.Of course, there's a cheaper, easier option of getting hold of the book and joining them on their travels through Eastern Europe from the comfort of your favourite armchair. What a wonderful world.
