Bulgaria Full Circle
The Bulgarian affair began in 2005, leaving the UK and moving into a village called Skalitsa some 37 kilometres from the City of Yambol. A smallholding was managed there and life was wholly immersed into a traditional village culture - a missing part of life's jigsaw had seemingly been found. This was not to be ... The only plan open to a 'sustainable' life in Bulgaria was to move back to the UK for essential funding. This was all due to the initial haste and impatience of trying to live the good life without income. It was doomed to fail as minimal income is a must to fulfil any life goal. Living and working in the UK brought about issues; the system, the people, and not least family. It also explains how alien it felt as a returning expatriate and how Galia now sees the UK now without rose-tinted glasses. Regardless of the number of hurdles put in our way, the plan forged ahead and a return to life in Yambol was made in 2017. A contrasting lifestyle and distinctly different adventures were found in an urban environment. Personal insights into residing in an old communist-era-built apartment block are laid out, which clearly highlights the divides. If there is something you really want, it can be achieved with determination, energy and willpower that drives you forward, never giving up. Galia was a pivotal figure in the plan and the book clearly shows that we wouldn't have reached our goal without her. The title, 'Bulgaria Full Circle' won't make sense until the last chapter has been read.

Albania
This new, fully revised seventh edition of Bradt's Albania remains the most authoritative standalone guide to what is still a relatively little known part of Europe. Coverage is comprehensive, starting in the capital, Tirana, then moving through central, northern and southern Albania to provide all the information needed for a successful trip. Included are knowledgeable and rigorously researched historical and archaeological background, detailed notes on popular and less well-known hiking routes and other outdoor activities, and specialist contributions on wildlife, military history and other topics. An unparalleled wealth of practical advice for the independent traveller is also offered. Albania has something to offer almost everyone. Many come for the spectacular, unspoilt mountain scenery and the hiking and cycling opportunities. Others are interested in the country's heritage, such as the Ottoman cities of Gjirokastra and Berati (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the many outstanding archaeological sites, and the Byzantine religious art in the medieval churches and in museums in Tirana, Kor癟a and Berati. Beaches such as Dh禱rmiu and Jala in the south are popular with young backpackers, while in high season the resorts are full of Albanian-speaking Kosovars and Macedonians. Ornithologists have long been attracted to Albania, even during the Communist period when the country was all but closed to most foreign visitors, thanks to its many different habitats and the fact it lies on several migration routes. For city slickers, lively Tirana offers shopping malls, cycle paths, museums, art galleries and historic buildings, yet in the countryside, especially in the mountains, villagers still live much as their grandparents did, tending their goats and sheep, spinning wool and making their own cheese and yogurt. Many villagers have opened up their homes as guest houses, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture first-hand. All of this - and more - is covered in Bradt's Albania, the ideal companion for a perfect trip.

My Viljandi
This book is a surreal account of some years spent in this small town. I arrived by train one evening, wondering why I had even returned. My marriage was over and my main companions were a notebook and pen. Then things started to happen. I fell in love with a Designer, was bewitched by Miss Cloud, comforted by a Lioness, and captivated by a Tigress. In Viljandi, I met divas, chefs, soothsayers, diplomats, poets, musicians, generals, bartenders, TV stars, and even boatmen. There were harvest parties, folk festivals, caf矇 and theater scenes, bonfires and yoga lessons. And coffee! Lots of coffee! But the main thing I learned during these years was this: you cannot write without love.
Blue Skies
Ukraine is gritty, it's undiscovered, it's misunderstood, and it's a hidden gem in Eastern Europe. It has its difficulties due to war, ununified identity, and complex history. Yet, it captures a traveler in its hospitality, culture, and sense of curiosity. Blue Skies is a collection of short stories that illuminates each of these elements, woven through a coming-of-age passage of a young American in Ukraine. It is not a travel guidebook that groups Ukraine with other countries in Eastern Europe, nor is it a detailed examination of Ukraine's history, language, or latest news. It is the reflections of a traveler's explorations and discoveries in cities across Ukraine, from the western city of Lviv to the eastern city of Kramatorsk. Through her own personal grief and loss, author Kat Rose explores the obstacles that travelers often face on the road: balancing work and travel, maintaining existing relationships while building new ones, and merging old beliefs with new discoveries. Blue Skies takes readers on the adventurous ride of what it's like to travel, live, and teach in Ukraine through the lens of openness towards strangers, perseverance through obstacles, and hope in the darkness.
I Am a Brave Bridge
Once upon a time an American girl moved to a little town in Slovakia. And she fell in love with the country, and with a boy. And then another boy. And then about a dozen boys fell in love with her. Many linguistic and romantic antics ensued, and a happy ending unlike any she could have foreseen. This is a story for everyone-the armchair traveler and the real one, the lover of love stories and the connoisseur of culture clash-but above all, it's a story for anyone who is always homesick for somewhere else.
Blue Guide Mediterranean Turkey
A guide to the early history and archaeological sites of Turkey's Mediterranean coast, covering the ancient provinces of Lycia, Pamphylia, Cilicia and part of the Pisidia Heritage Trail. Included are Cnidus, site of Praxiteles' famous nude statue of Aphrodite; Myra and Xanthus and the rock tombs of Lycia; the city of Antalya; the ruins of Perge and Side; Alanya with its impressive walls; the aite of Selinus (where Trajan died); Silifke (where Frederick Barbarossa drowned); Tarsus (where St Paul was born) and the bay of Iskenderun, where Alexander the Great defeated Darius III of Persia at the Battle of Issus. The guide ends at the Syrian border with the city of Antakya, ancient Antioch, near which St Simeon Stylites and other early Christian ascetics lived their lives on top of tall pillars.

A Traveller's History of Croatia
George Bernard Shaw wrote that on the last day of Creation, "God desired to crown His work," and so fashioned the Croatian coastline "out of tears, stars, and breath." Anyone who has glimpsed that long, mountainous, island-studded coast would surely agree that its beauty is little short of divine. Croatia, quite simply, is blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet and in recent years has become a favorite tourist destination. A Traveller's History of Croatia offers tourists and travellers an inside look at the complex roots of Croatian history and the many influences they will see on its towns, ports and islands. The country has been a melting-pot of Mediterranean, Central European and Italian cultures. After a look at how its geography and geology have shaped the nation, a fascinating story unfolds explaining its past: why there are so many Greek and Roman archaeological remains, the coming of Christianity, the sad tale of how the early blooming of the Croatian state in the 9th century was thwarted by its subsequent partition and absorption into the Venetian, Habsburg and Ottoman Empires and the tortuous struggle for sovereignty in the nineteenth century. The twentieth century brought new solutions in the founding of Yugoslavia, problems with Croatian nationalism and the horrors of invasion in World War II. Under Tito a new stability came to the region until the battles of the 1990s, which were finally resolved with the international recognition of an independent state in 1992. One definite conclusion can be drawn about Croatia in the early twenty-first century: this is the best time in all of Croatian history. The country is after all independent, democratic, with a stable economy, and it has established itself as one of the world's most coveted tourist destinations.
