The Bridge Between Worlds
In a world increasingly preoccupied by borders, bridges celebrate the possibility of connection, allowing the flow of goods, people and ideas. Bridges are among our grandest physical structures with the power of transforming lives and economies, but we also stand (or fall) upon the simple arch of bones in our feet. Text is a bridge between writer and reader, and conversation builds bridges of understanding between minds. Dr Gavin Francis has spent his life fascinated by the power of bridges to improve human connection. In The Bridge Between Worlds he examines bridges both actual and metaphorical, on a journey through more than twenty countries, across four decades of travel. From Rome's Ponte Sant'Angelo to Brooklyn, Victoria Falls to London, Singapore to Siberia, this thought-provoking book reflects on connections between nations and between individuals. Francis demonstrates what the building of bridges has meant to our civilisation, how crossings can enrich our lives, and the price we pay when we tear them down.

Italy: Abruzzo
This new, fourth edition of Bradt's Italy: Abruzzo remains the only standalone English-language guide to this beautiful, increasingly favoured part of Italy. Abruzzo offers the best of undiscovered Italy, from pristine beaches to mountain glaciers, with charming medieval villages clinging to the hillsides in between. This edition has been thoroughly updated to cover all recent developments, explaining in detail its appeal for active tourism, including wildlife-watching, trekking, skiing and horse-riding, plus family holidays.Abruzzo offers one of Italy's most beautiful coastlines, which lie near the country's tallest mountain ranges outside the Alps. Little wonder that Abruzzo is Italy's second most popular skiing centre bar the Alps and that it offers some the country's finest hiking and wildlife-watching opportunities. Moreover, according to the 'I Borghi Pi羅 Belli d'Italia' ('Italy's most beautiful towns') programme, Abruzzo has 25 such locations, second only to Umbria. What makes the Abruzzo region remarkable is that, despite being so close to Rome, it is still about as unique and authentic an Italian experience as you can get in a country so devoured by international tourism. The Abruzzesi feel a sense of relief about this, viewing theirs as the one truly untouched region in Italy - and this despite increasing accessibility from other European countries and its emergence as a leading conference destination. Alongside practical information how to get around, and suggestions for the best places to stay and eat (including both secret urban gems and remote rural idylls), Bradt's Italy: Abruzzo also advises on where to go to enjoy Blue Flag beaches, mountain walks, pristine castles, frescoed churches, World War II commemorative sites, Roman ruins and the chance to spot charismatic animals such as brown bears and grey wolves. There is extensive coverage of Abruzzo's notable cultural and linguistic diversity, and of its cuisine: Abruzzo is home to most of Italy's pasta production. Written with warmth and insight by a native Abruzzese, this fourth edition of Bradt's Italy: Abruzzo contains all the practical and background information, and expert local advice, you need to discover this surprising, enchanting Italian region.

A Little Gaelic Kingdom
"A masterpiece of travel and topographical writing, and an incomparable and enthralling meditation on times past."--John Banville"He knows this world as no one else does, and writes about it with awe and love, but also with measured grace, an artist's eye and a scientist's sensibility."--Colm T籀ib穩nIn its landscape, history, language, and folklore, the Connemara region on Ireland's wild and windswept West Coast is a dramatic and breathtaking place. From its fabled villages, seaside cliffs, bogs, lakes, coral beaches, stark mountains, and ever-meandering country roads lined with stone walls, this rugged kingdom surprises and inspires, and nobody knows this more than artist, cartographer, and celebrated writer Tim Robinson. In A Little Gaelic Kingdom, Robinson brings this enchanting Irish peninsula rapturously to life. Setting off, he embarks on a walking journey, traversing and exploring the natural world, while revealing the history, mystery, language, and people that have indelibly shaped this much-mythologized countryside. From the glacial valley of Maam to the fishing villages and rocky shorelines of the region's archipelago, Robinson carries encyclopedic knowledge, great curiosity, and a deep love of place and its inhabitants with him on this engaging and evocative journey.Beautifully crafted and intimately rendered, A Little Gaelic Kingdom is a timeless and revelatory work of travel and nature writing.

About How an'Auld Yank Learned to Survive in Southwest County Cork Ireland(Remember, you could come to Ireland for a week and stay for a Lifetime, just like I did! That's the magic and allure of Ireland and its people.) This 'Aulder Yank, now sixty-eight years old, has now survived Ireland for over Forty-Three Years. When I moved here permanently in June, 1982, and lived in Navan, County Meath, the country was very, very different than it is now. The first series, A Survivor's Guide Living in Ireland, talks about how I came to live here and what happened to me, my family and the job that I managed to land. That series, which was launched in 2005 and finished in 2021, continues to be relevant. This Brand-New memoir and travel guide picks up in March, 2024. After I write about this astounding journey of living in Eyeries Village, County Cork, I'll also include most, but not all, of A Survivor's Guide to Living in Ireland. Call it a bonus for those who purchase this first book in a new series of A Survivor's Guide by Tom Richards. In this new Memoir and Travel Guide, I have the most recent information on the price of homes and how to get a Visa. Too, this memoir, which is also something of a journal, tells you about the places I've visited and which I recommend. The Magic of the Kerry Coast
This is a sequel to the best-selling The Wind That Round the Fastnet Sweeps. In it John M. Feehan continues his odyssey from Crookhaven up the coast of Kerry to the Skelling Rocks and the Blasket Islands. It follows the same pattern - a little sailing, a little thinking, a little laughing, a little drinking and once again we meet a marvellous collection of those strange and unusual characters who always seem to run across the author's path and which he describes with such understanding and humanity. John M. Feehan was born near Cashel, Co. Tipperary, and was educated at Thurles C.B.S., Colaiste Eanna, Rockwell College and University College, Galway. After a number of years in the army, where he attained the rank of Captain, he founded The Mercier Press and took up publishing as a full-time career. He is the author of Tomorrow To Be Brave, and An Irish Publisher and His World.
Christmas Market Malaga
The Malaga Christmas Market is a completely different experience from the Christmas Markets in the German speaking World. This is not only due to the lovely weather but also to significant cultural differences.Malaga is one of the oldest cities not only in Spain but in the World, inhabited for almost 3000 years. The Christmas Market appears to have started in the late Middle Ages in Germany. The Middle Ages is a long historic period in Europe starting abt 500 AD with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and lasting to abt 1500 AD when the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery took over.It started as the Welcoming of Christ the Child - "Christ Kind" in German - at the beginning of the four Sundays of Advent that ends with Christmas Day, which is the 25 December. The Christmas market is a fair connected with the seasonal period and infused with our religion, which very much organized everybody's lives back then.In Medieval times, rights to hold fairs were often granted by the feudal lords to convents and bishoprics both as income generation for the religious work and as a city development tool. Many towns trace their prosperity to the market rights. The close association between the local cathedral and the Christmas market is still evident although the taxes now go elsewhere.

Andalucian Delight
The wonderful cakes from Andalucia are pure luxury. Many of them were developed in rich towns where the citizens indulged not only in cakes but in all kinds of luxuries.Today these luxurious cakes are available to everyone. From being the creations of a few master bakers for a small elite the recipes are followed in pastelerias all over Andalucia. By all means enjoy them! Remember to exercise! These cakes are very rich, that is why they taste so good! But let us make one thing clear. We find it a detestable practice to use margarine instead of manteca de cerdo (lard) and butter and to add extra sugar to try to cover this up. We understand margarine is cheaper, but the cakes do not taste the same. It is a kind of fraud on the consumer. Be sure to ask for the real thing!Besides cakes, Andalucia has so much to offer the visitor and its own residents. You will enjoy a visit!
